No Respect For Shaq
June 3rd, 2020“My wife, she keeps me in line, no matter how many guys are ahead of me. That’s the story of my life: no respect.” — Rodney Dangerfield.
The late comedian Rodney Dangerfield made a killing on the schtick centered around his common theme, “I get no respect.”
In fact, in the closing credits to his classic movie “Back to School,” the music was Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.”
Joe is sure Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett can relate. One would think a guy that was a hair away from 20 sacks would have been an All-Pro player. Nope.
And in prickly Pete Prisco’s top-100 players list, Prisco dings Barrett for his past in ranking him only No. 82.
He’s a tough player to grade since he had his breakout season in 2019. He led the league in sacks with 19.5, which is more than the 14 he had in his previous five seasons.
Of course, Barrett could shatter this image of himself being a one-year wonder or a relative no-name if he has, say, 12 or 15 sacks again this year, at least one sack on every night game the Bucs play this year.
And gets a sack in a playoff game.
Joe senses only then, will Shaq get respect.
“My wife is such a bad cook, I walked into the kitchen one day and saw a cockroach hung itself with dental floss.” — Rodney Dangerfield.

Well, when you have a combined “start” experience of 17 games over 5 seasons and mostly played part-time behind Von Miller, people are going to question it.
Frankly, it’s rare that even “one year wonders” tally that many sacks. If it was so easy, everybody would be racking up 19 sacks!
Doubters gonna doubt!

Just lost all respect for Pete Prisco..the sack KING last year?….I don’t care if it was his first year doing it….that should get any player higher on any list…smh
June 3rd, 2020 at 1:16 pm
My opinion about this is its more deserving to other players who has been doing it for years and just maybe didn’t need a JJP guy to elevate him like Chandler Jones who is worlds better than Shaq
Then he has a very good front 7. Is he a product of that? Yes he is

Shaq will TEACH THE HATERS
20 sacks
BEAST MODE DEFENSE THIS YEAR!!!!
June 3rd, 2020 at 1:41 pm
Considering that I get winded playing ping pong poorly, I’m in no position to ‘judge’ an elite athlete’s drive.
That being said, I’ve got a gut feeling that Shaq is the type of player that feels the need to prove his elitism on every play. For someone like this, getting paid is just a side note. That is not to say that he wouldn’t be insulted by a lowball contract. IMHO it would not be a good idea to insult this man.
June 3rd, 2020 at 1:49 pm
If this defense can shut down the run again….SHAQ will get plenty of opportunities to succeed as a pass rusher…just like he did last year, it’s up to the defense to control that line of scrimmage and be dominate against the run!!!
June 3rd, 2020 at 1:50 pm
Well…he did get some respect………the franchise tag affords him $16 mill…….that is a 400% increase from his 2019 salary of $4mill……….
He needs to repeat double digit sacks…..then he’ll get total respect.

The Saints are self collapsing over Twitter!

Lamarcus, although I agree that those rankings should be reserved for players who have consistently done it, JPP was only in about half the season so that doesn’t help your point of him needing JPP to reach 10 sacks in 8 games. After rewatching him last year the man is damn good, consistently bending that edge of using an array of moves to get to that QB FAST. I don’t think it’s repeatable but I think he’s gunna get up to atleast 10 sacks for the next few years, putting him right in line with those cats. But I agree with you, he’s gotta show up again and again for the recognition to be deserved.

Often players with high sack totals play on winning teams who tend to have the leads late in games as the opposition is passing a lot trying to win the game. This was not the case for the Bucs who often did not hold the lead late in games. Imagine Shaq’s total had the Bucs won 10 plus games and our D would have been on the field trying to protect a lead instead of our offense on the field trying to score a game tying td!

Went to a Rodney Dangerfield show in 1980 or 1981 in New York. His open act was the GoGo’s which I did not know at the time. They sang 3 songs.
Oh man, I was an ugly kid, I was the poster child for birth control…. Rodney
I also had an acne problem. One day I fell asleep and when I woke up a blind man was reading my face… Rodney

“I came from a mean neighborhood. Real mean. Kids used to tape worms to the sidewalk just to watch robins get hernias.”

Lol, good point Tampabaybucsfan! He got the only respect that matters; the team gauranteed him top dollar at his position. These lists are trash. I saw one the other day about top 100 players in 2000’s and didn’t even include Ladanian Tomilson, who was easily a top 5 player and is a sure HOFer. Gimme a break!

Joe,
Never heard the hernia/worms joke….. hilarious!
June 3rd, 2020 at 2:42 pm
cool, so lets see him get 16 as a floor this year and then he’ll not only get mad respect, he’ll get his own brinks truck!

🙂

I agree Bucsfanman. If you look at his sack averages for the amount of snaps he played in Denver and then extrapolate those numbers with the kind of playing time he got in Tampa he would have been averaging anywhere between 10-12 sacks per season. 19.5 sacks is certainly an outlier but it’s not as if he’s going to have six sacks this year. In a full season I expect no less than 10 sacks.
June 3rd, 2020 at 4:15 pm
Do it again – if he does, he’ll shoot up the rankings.
I’ve seen Wayne Haddix dominate for a year, then disappear from the face of the earth (other than being the MVP of Temco Super Bowl). That’s why the Bucs are using the franchise tag.
But if he can do it again, give him a long-term deal making him the highest paid defensive player ever. Also, as fans, be happy if he can get 10-12 sacks a season, if he can, that is a super valuable player and not a bust. He’s only a bust if he gets you 10-12 sacks a year and you’re paying him 20-sack money.

tbbucs3 – I hate to see what Brees said – he’s making me like him, and I don’t want to like him. But as for a meltdown, without seeing what you’re referring to, I’m going to assume that overrated drama queen Michael Thomas is having a meltdown – if so, I love that.
June 3rd, 2020 at 4:32 pm
LOL BREES
It’s not like that was going to go over poorly with your teammates or anything.
Also while I do get that Shaq could be a one year wonder his play this year was just way too dominate in all aspects for it to be a total fluke. I don’t think he will be as dominant but still really good.
June 3rd, 2020 at 4:36 pm
Uncanny. I was literally in the midst of listening to a podcast with Bob Saget on it talking about his Relationship ship with Rodney Dangerfield. He actually has Rodney’s ganja box and piece pipe from back in the day!
June 3rd, 2020 at 4:45 pm
If the three young CB’s continue to grow their cover skills which are already pretty impressive…if D White and Winfield put the fear of picks and collisions in opposing QB’s heads…if the back end covers just a couple of beats longer our D line will get theirs.

“I’m going to assume that overrated drama queen Michael Thomas is having a meltdown”
You would be correct, dude is a locker room CANCER.
June 3rd, 2020 at 5:29 pm
It doesn’t matter. This year changes everything. Even the refs will finally call things our way.
June 3rd, 2020 at 6:38 pm
Not surprised do.it again then people will believe
June 3rd, 2020 at 7:03 pm
>He led the league in sacks with 19.5, which is more than the 14 he had in his previous five seasons.<
.
.
This is way misleading, and points to minimal research done by a person who gets paid to write this crap.
If you work out his time in Denver by sacks per defensive play, the stats are much closer to what he did last year.
June 3rd, 2020 at 8:18 pm
Dangerfield was hilarious. When I was a kid we would have called him a “sick mama”.
Last year we were overlooked (maybe as deserved), this year we we will be overpraised.
Some of our guys will finally get the praise they are due as well.
June 3rd, 2020 at 8:45 pm
Being snubbed for the pro bowl was BS. If he was on any of the major market teams he would’ve been in easily.
Hi hope they sign him to a four-year deal to lessen that $16 million per year tag. Spread it out 12-13 mill year.
Normally I would say prove it one more year but with all the national recognition coming this way, if he gets 12 sacks or more this year his price tag might end up being outrageous. Sign him now.
Besides, with the linebacking corps healthy, and VEA Getting better and better, and a fully healthy JPP… I fully expect him to get 12+
June 3rd, 2020 at 10:04 pm
Double digits should do it.
June 4th, 2020 at 11:51 pm
Well if things go right this season Shaq should get less opportunities if the offense doesn’t give the ball away every third series. Because our defense was on the field after all those turnovers he got a lot more chances per game.
