“Tom Brady Effect” Overblown?
May 25th, 2020Are some people taking the Tom Brady workouts with his teammates a little too far?
Yes, Joe is fully aware that the park-violating, home-invading Bucs quarterback has a strong reputation for being a crazed workaholic. Folks outside the Tampa Bay area, specifically those sitting behind mics and keyboards for a living in Boston, are looking at the poor Bucs fans and almost lecturing the littles that Brady will shape up the team with his hard work and drive and determination.
Joe doesn’t discount any of that whatsoever.
And former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms spoke recently on Pro Football Talk, aired weekday mornings on NBC Sports Network, to explain to Bucs fans that when the paparazzi caught Brady and teammates working out last week, it means Brady is whipping the Bucs into shape and that a new sheriff is in town.
“The thing that jumps out more than any of this is, here is the Tom Brady Effect,” Simms said. “We are seeing it right away. You see any other teams or quarterbacks having practice right now?
“No one else is showing me, not like that. I mean, Tom Brady is wearing his shoulder pads and has his helmet on.”
That’s true.
But there are two or three things working here.
First, it’s not like Brady’s predecessor didn’t work out with teammates in the offseason. Also, Bucs players were often seen working out at the Skyway Sports Complex along the Veterans Expressway. So Joe doesn’t get all the hosannas over players working out on their own in May.
Second, Bucs teammates are stoked that Brady is the quarterback and they were chomping at the bit to meet him, help him learn the offense and catch balls from him.
Third, you may have missed it, but The Sickness wiped out OTAs and minicamp. These guys are pros and know they need time together. Brady’s arrival tells them they have a real shot at a playoff berth and the quicker they get on the same page with the six-time Super Bowl-winner, the better.
Maybe it’s just Joe, or maybe it’s because most guys and girls earning a check from national outlets live in the northeast bubble and pay zero attention to teams outside it except the Cowboys — until toe meets leather as Gene Deckerhoff likes to say. Joe just thinks Brady and his workouts with teammates are blown way out of proportion.
(Coincidence that the only other team where video/photos of a workout outside team headquarters went viral was — wait for it — the Cowboys?)
It is a good sign and a good move to work out with teammates? Of course it is! But it’s not like it hasn’t happened nearly every year.

It is wrong to think the Brady alone is why the Patriots are a well coached well disciplined team!!!!!!!!!! The bucs are a sloppy coach team, with the most penalized team in the NFL!!!!!!!!! This season will expose the bad gm, and average coaches from the Bucs!!!!!!!! If Brady can drag ole stale biscuit to a wildcard playoff game, it should be the greatest feat in Brady’s career!!!!!!!!!!! And that includes those 6 superbowls!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the “no excuse” season of all “no excuse” seasons!!!!!!!!!!!!
go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 25th, 2020 at 12:22 pm
He needs to get in tune with receivers if anything as he will be using them a ton. A few RBs there would probably be a good idea.
May 25th, 2020 at 12:58 pm
For the 1st 2 games Brady will rely on Gronkowski who he has years of experience throwing to. After the 1st 2 games he surely will begin to find chemistry with more than one other receiver.

The workouts are not a surprising story, not a new story, not an old story, not a overblown story, not much of a story…..but just a story.
May 25th, 2020 at 1:31 pm
@Tampabaybucfan
Yes, but you should know, that the sheep love having tall-tales read to them over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the “no excuse” season of all “no excuse” seasons!!!!!!!!!!!!
go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes this is overblown …Mr 5,000 did it on the regular….but the TEAM was not good enough …now that the team has come along we STOP building and settled for a box of chocolates!!!
May 25th, 2020 at 2:19 pm
He’s going to hit the open man whoever it is including checkdowns, and if the OL doesn’t hold up the checkdowns will happen a lot.
May 25th, 2020 at 2:25 pm
Sure…El Sucko Fake-A-Leasto thinks the Bucs are poorly coached, yet thinks Mike Smith was a great defensive coordinator. You really couldn’t have less credibility, Fake-A-Sheepo.
May 25th, 2020 at 2:46 pm
Yeah Joe it’s overblown. Like you said these workouts happen all the time.
I think the biggest difference is confidence. When we actually get in a real game there’s gotta be a lot of confidence knowing whose leading this team. If a Tom Brady talks to his defense and tells them get me the ball back and I’ll win us this game they are going to believe it. I don’t know much about playing sports on a professional level but in general I do know confidence is huge. It does make a real difference is your approach and performance. Tom Brady will change that and give this team confidence no doubt in my mind……..Now we just need him to live up to his end of the bargain.
GO BUCS!!!

Demar Dotson, 10 penalties
Jameis Winston, 6 penalties
Vernon Hargreaves, 3 penalties
Carl Nassib, 3 penalties
Earl Watford, 3 penalties
That’s 25 penalties for guys not being brought back. That’s a good start to fixing the problems with penalties.

Joe in Michigan…….You need to join the sheep. We are a happy flock now. We don’t follow El anymore. He led us into despair when we all decided to give the coaching staff a pass. When he directed us to give them a second pass we had to turn away. He promised us green grass and led us to a swamp. He is now the Sheppard without a herd.
We sheep do not read his scrambled writing anymore unless just for a laugh. We now refer to him as the crazy on the internet.

Man, I’d love to own am Exclamation Point franchise. I’d make a small fortune off the Realist. I’m sure the regulars to this site are all too familiar with his/her style, but it really jumps out to the casual visitor. He/she also seems to have a real infatuation with sheep. I should probably just be ignoring it, right?
May 25th, 2020 at 3:13 pm
Until toe meets leather, it do not matter. ” Go Bucs”
May 25th, 2020 at 3:14 pm
Jimmy Jack, stfu and speak just for yourself. Who is this “we” that you always speak for? You are too stupid to complete a sentence. Not a fan of realist but…you are no more truthful than he.
May 25th, 2020 at 3:40 pm
El Buco Realisto …oh no more sheep (spreading like rabbits) at PFF. They rated the Bucs receiving corp as number 1 and the Chiefs number 2. Those stupid PFF sheep.
May 25th, 2020 at 4:23 pm
No, it is not overblown. The practice brings him down to ground level for his receivers and such.
The team will still walk up to the line with their heads on straighter. The legend will also be partly theirs.
Better and more efficient quarterbacking will reduce the amount of penalties. No more letting the play clock run down after a time out, no trying to call two timeouts in a row, and no more holding the ball while waiting for the #1 receiver to clear.
All of those things will be automatic. If a QB holds the ball too long there will always be a penalty.
This will no longer be a heart attack offense, it will be methodical.
May 25th, 2020 at 4:38 pm
Brady’s predecessor was a big zero when it came to actually gettting something done. That’s why he’s settled into his back-up QB role and should do quite well in it. It’s a shame the Bucs waited so long to move on. I knew when the Uber disgrace struck he was done being the face of this team, and Brady will instantly revive years of lost hope. Brady is not overblown. He is not what he was five years ago, but he is ton bettern than any QB the Bucs have EVER had. To get the most out of it though, the Bucs to make sure they draft his replacement next year. May be hard to do as the hope is the Bucs pick LAST. But then again, Brady himself was a low round pick..and now he’s the GOAT.
May 25th, 2020 at 5:39 pm
This article makes it an overblown story, Joe.
May 25th, 2020 at 6:20 pm
The Bucs stories are blown out of proportion because there’s no NBA playoffs, no NHL playoffs and no baseball
May 25th, 2020 at 6:23 pm
@SOEbuc
But no where near as overblown as ole stale biscuit reputation!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember all the tough talk and then a flop of a losing 7-9 season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the “no excuse” season of all “no excuse” seasons!!!!!!!!!!!!
go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 25th, 2020 at 6:31 pm
Are they really wearing full pads at this thing?
If so, that’s a first, and I love it. With the reduction of padded practices teams can hold as stated by the new CBA, them doing it on their own is amazing!
May 25th, 2020 at 6:32 pm
Brady’s replacement in 2 years?
Could be a rookie next year, but don’t count out :
Cam Newton
Aaron Rodgers
Dak Prescott
Kirk Cousins
Matt Barkley
Alot can happen between now and 2022
May 25th, 2020 at 6:36 pm
El Buco Realisto Says:
“The bucs are a sloppy coach team, with the most penalized team in the NFL!”
First, that is a lie.
Second, refs have targeted the Bucs with bad calls for two decades. The Bucs are disciplined. The refs just don’t call equally during games.
All of us have seen it…teams getting no-calls on penalties and the Bucs getting bad calls. Heck, it even cost us a trip to get he Superbowl a time or two in the NFC Championship game.
May 25th, 2020 at 6:38 pm
@alanbucsfan
It would be a better use of time making a list of new Head Coaches and new GM’s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the “no excuse” season of all “no excuse” seasons!!!!!!!!!!!!
go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 25th, 2020 at 6:38 pm
Alanbucsfan,
Dak will have a contract with the Cowgirls by the end of this season.
Matt Barkley is a low quality backup.
May 25th, 2020 at 7:25 pm
BBonzai-
Let’s see what Barkley can do with some receivers
Don’t underestimate Dak and his agent – they will force Cowboys to choose between Dak and another of their high paid starters and alot depends on how Dalton pans out.
May 25th, 2020 at 8:21 pm
It is a excellent story of a great coming to this lowly franchise and putting in the work to change a losing culture instead of relying on other factors or excuses.
Joe, his predecessor has no comp and they’re not in the same class. In this case, you are wrong in that it is a story that exact context.
The previous QB has nothing to do with what the GOAT is and or will do.
May 25th, 2020 at 8:26 pm
As long as the Bucs keep getting better and developing their young guys they will be just fine in the big picture.
May 25th, 2020 at 8:34 pm
@Realist, go play in traffic and STFU!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 25th, 2020 at 9:20 pm
Little Beaux Peep:
You don’t seem happy with anything here. I suspect the Saints have a message board!!!!!!!!
May 25th, 2020 at 9:49 pm
I made an account just say what I’m sure alot of people already said but why hate on Tom Brady? And still call that turncoat Winston “America’s Quaterback”? Seems backwards to me… It could be a lame joke but that’s not how you welcome the GOAT to Tampa Bay. I’ve been reading this blog for over 10 years and I’m probably done at this point. Joe bucs is usually late on the news anyway.
May 25th, 2020 at 10:38 pm
nothing worse than the josh feeman, jameis winston and bruce gradkowski effect.
May 25th, 2020 at 10:46 pm
Just because the other 31 teams are not making headlines with their practice habits, does not mean that the other 31 teams are not practicing.
All Bucs fans should know this very well.
May 25th, 2020 at 10:51 pm
Robert James- now those are great comps! Well done sir. 😉

Tompa Brady HISTORY of winning SB’s — is the reason for respect from current Bucs and the workouts. Gimme a break that Tompa workouts are “new” – JW was/is crazy about prep. See past history with JW and his receivers. Not like we are talking about Tompa preceding Freeman.
The “Sickness” has eliminated “normal”. Tompa has to learn tendencies of his new teammates, and that understanding comes from reps and Tompa will make that happen. My bigger concern is Tompa’s 43yr old scrambling ability. I “like” our O-Line and confident O-line will perform much better in 2020. However…Tompa may have to “go rogue” to stay upright in BA offense, as the season progresses. To me, that is “THE WILDCARD”. BA will adjust his O for Tompa. Still – BA history is unkind to his first year QB’s for big hits. And that is my concern, for the statue immobile QB – that is 43yr old Brady.

El Buco Realisto
Yeah “no excuses” is for sheep. Lol. No name’s but came down to that last play of the season to put us 7-9. That put the lock on a new QB.
