A former NFL MVP weighs in
There’s the ongoing national chatter about Tom Brady’s influence on Buccaneers personnel, and now it seems Brady will transition to the coaching ranks out of necessity.
Former NFL MVP and quarterback Rich Gannon works for CBS Sports and was chatting this week on their radio airwaves about Brady and the Bucs.
Gannon was asked a simple question: “What QB has the most pressure on him this season?” Gannon said that’s Brady, the new captain of a team Gannon considers overhyped.
“He came from a situation where there was so much structure and discipline and accountability. You know, [he and New England] had been in the system forever. He’d been with one coach for 20 years. The system never changed. Think about it; when Charlie Weis left to go to Notre Dame, they promoted Josh McDaniels. When Josh left to go to Denver, they promoted Bill O’Brien. When Bill O’Brien left to go to Penn State, they brought back Josh. So that’s just not change at all. Now he’s going to go somewhere, learn a new system, and not only that, but new players.
“It’s not going to be the way it was in New England. He’s going to do more coaching than he ever did before to get it the way he wants it. That could be a challenge for a guy like Brady. And on top of that, anything less than winning a division or going to the playoffs or going deep in the playoffs is going to be considered kind of disappointing year for the Buccaneers.
“I still think Tom can get it done. I still think he’s a talented, talented player. Doesn’t have the mobility or anything, but he’s so smart, he so cagey, and he can still be very accurate when the protection’s good around him.
“But I just think there’s been so much talk about the Buccaneers. It’s almost like what happened last year with the Cleveland Browns. … I’m like wait a minute; they haven’t won a playoff game in years. What have they done?”
Gannon’s point is fair, but Joe’s enjoying the hype and hell, if you can’t add Brady and Rob Gronkowski to this Bucs team and expect it to make the playoffs in a season that will have seven playoff teams per conference, then Joe thinks you’re a very jaded fan.

We all know that playoffs is the bar for me and anything else is a win and anything less is a bust, it’s been 13 years since we’ve been playoffs and most of the nfl football fans called us perennial losers and it’s a losing culture that has like 5 players that have made the playoffs out of 53 man roster. It’s playoffs or bust for me

I think that’s part of why he came here. He knows he’s the greatest of all time but he wants to show he can elevate a mediocre team to success.

Get in the dance is all I ask. I’m not one of the crazies that think this team is suddenly a Super Bowl team. All I want is to get in the playoffs and give us a chance. Hell, try not to get eliminated from contention by the middle of October and I’ll consider it a mild success.
All Brady has to do is get the ball out of his hands and let the fellas do the rest. Getting Gronk to go along with what we have at the other receiver positions should turn our division on it’s head. With a smart QB, I really don’t see how the offense can be stopped, even idmf the just dink and dunk it down the field. If teams want to sit in a zone we’ll march right down the field. If the want to try and play man, we’ll have match-up’s galore to burn them with, and, and this year we should be able to run to the right side.
Good luck NFC South, you’re going to need it.

Having Brady, with his experience and his football mind is like having a coach on the field.
I would rather have a QB that’s a coach on the field than have a QB that NEEDS a coach on the field
Don’t know how all of this is going to work out for the Bucs, but it should be interesting, entertaining and fun to watch.

No way we don’t make the playoffs. Between adding TB and Gronk AND an extra playoff spot, heck, Jameis could get us in (only to throw 6 picks in the one and only playoff game).

Perhaps. But he totally loses me as does anybody else who brings up the Cleveland Browns as an example of over-hyping. We are NOTHING like the Browns…from a ROOKIE coach who had no control over a team loaded with head cases depending on a QB who hasn’t even reached JW levels.

Brown expectations were built on too many players who have yet to actually achieve anything.
A better example of dashed expectations would be the 2003 Bucs. They were the defending SB Champs and had plenty of talent. Expectations of THAT Buc team were not built on pie in the sky.
Despite high expectations, several last-minute losses led to locker room tension and front-office struggles. The Buccaneers finished 7–9, and missed the playoffs.
This year’s team is getting expectations based on past achievement much like our 2003 team…the OPPOSITE of the Brownies. Let’s hope we finish better than 2003.

Yeah, but the difference between us and the Browns is that we got Brady, a 6 time SB champ. The Browns got Mayfield, which I have never liked as a QB in the NFL. He talks way too much and doesn’t back it up. I guess Hue Jackson was right in not wanting to play him because he wasn’t ready.
Even is Brady is just a game manager, it’s still an upgrade of what we had. We were 7-9 last season and realistically could’ve easily been 9-7, Winston. Think about that. Winston had 30 picks and 7 fumbles and we could’ve easily been 9-7. I forecast with Brady we will 11-5 and challenging the Saints for the Division.

I dont see the comparison between the 2019 Browns and the 2020 Bucs, besides being media darlings.
Browns went into 2019 with a HC that has never been a HC before. Pretty sure they had an entire new coaching staff. There were reasons to doubt the Browns 2019 team, but people were blinded by OBJ and expecting Baker to be a top 5 QB.
Bucs have a proven HC. A proven coaching staff. And a team that played well most of 2019, but just shot themselves in the foot too often. And all they did was add a QB who will cut their league-leading turnovers in half, a future HOF TE, and upgraded tgeir OL.
The ONLY, and I mean ONLY, reason to not be excited about the Bucs in 2020 is if you think the turnaround the secondary had last year was a fluke by playing backup QBs down the stretch. We experienced that in 2017 so it is possible.

I’m glad SC Bucs Fan admitted that this team is mediocre. Brady will learn that a player can’t instill discipline into an entire team like a coach can.
And before someone says BA is some hard-ass disciplinarian, they might want to go check and see who led the league in penalties last year. You think Brady is going to jump into DB drills to get Carlton Davis to stop holding? HA.

I find it ridiculous that the Bucs hype now is being compared to the Browns hype last year. Although there is hype in both instances, it stops at that. A Baker Mayfield Qb, many including a non professional like me predicted a huge fail there because Baker had not accomplished anything and his attitude projected an unwarranted cockiness. Tb12, on the other hand…please, there is not enough room here to list what he has done. It’s like comparing Michael Jordan coming to your team hype compared to adding a few good players to a team led by Josh Rosen. Just stop with this comparison, it makes the author appear to be uneducated.

The comparison is closer than you think!!!!! The 2018 had won 4 of the last 6 games, and the defense had supposedly turned to the corner, ( sound familiar) But then, last year, they “realized” the browns defense had just played some bad teams with back up QB’s ( sound even more familiar”)!!!!!!!!!!

Comparing Brady to MJ?? Well first of all, a single player can have an effect on a NBA much moreso than an NFL team.
Also, I’m a Wizards fan…. Let me tell you about all the winning we did with washed up Mike….. (there was not much)

Barring injury issues, we will be a playoff team withour much doubt. I agree that the Bucs and Browns are much different situations.
TB12 and the offense is going to be unstoppable and the defense will continue to get better. I especially love Winfield Jr. being inserted on the back end.
So yeah, I believe the hype is valid and fun. Any Bucs fan that can’t enjoy the attention and hype sadly miss out on a lot of fun.

Good point StPete about us being “NOTHING like the Browns”. The 2019 Browns had talent; no question. BUT … they also had the ROOKIE coach you mentioned, they had some leadership issues beyond that, and their talent level wasn’t all that uniform (too many weaknesses).
The 2020 Bucs are being over-hyped IMO, but for much different reasons. Our coaching staff is very experienced and ‘well-seasoned’. We’ve got a good mix of veterans & younger players, so leadership shouldn’t be nearly as big an issue. And Bucs’ management has done a very commendable job in building a TEAM that’s fairly solid in all position groups, at least in the starting positions.
But 2 things could come back to bite us in the proverbial arse. One is our DEPTH. No team has perfect depth, but we’ve got several position groups (DLine, OLine, QB) that don’t look to have satisfactory DEPTH, at least for my liking. The other concern is schedule. Bucs 2020 schedule is a bear, and every game will be a dogfight. Personally think that New Orleans & Atlanta have a leg up on us in terms of winning the division, but that doesn’t mean we can’t win it. Have a hunch it’ll just be a tougher row for us to hoe, that’s all.

Brady is the Goat for a reason. Gannon said it could be a challenge. Well challenge accepted. Brady lives for the stuff, He wants to prove he can win with out Belichick. He’s gonna have the crew ready to Play.
A few plays here, A few plays there, Last season would look a lot different. Brady’s gonna make those plays!
The D’s gonna take the next step & improve from last year . Got most of the roster back, Added some nice additions in the draft.
I like the hype! I can buy into the Hype because who we have as a QB & Staff. BA turned around this organization & adding Brady & Gronk is what we needed to win more games. Can’t wait for this season. It’s gonna be fun to watch.

I’ve heard the super bowl hype from a number of media outlets and personalities but have yet to hear the same hype from anyone I know personally, I think the biggest sense of excitement from fans I’ve heard is the possibility of seeing the Bucs play without beating themselves and forcing other teams to beat them whilst not making all the mistakes. I wouldn’t call them(the fans) “jaded”, just cautiously optimistic.

I think people are undervaluing the supporting cast. Even if Tom has lost a step, ME13 hasn’t. Godwin hasn’t. Brate hasn’t.
The defense could be even better. The best run d in the league with some non-rookie CBs WITHOUT short fields (due to INTs), WITHOUT spotting the opponent 42 points through pick 6s, and what’s not to like?
It’s as if people are suddenly thinking we’ll stay the same or get worse. I’m not sure how they’re getting there. Plus there’s another playoff team added this year.
Add that up and I’m not sure how you DONT see us as a playoff team.

You cant stop BUCS or TB12 haters. Underestimating the GOAT is risky. Brady always reminded himself he was a 199 draftee and has played that way every since to prove everyone wrong about him. He will be prepared once the season starts. I would not say BUCS will go to SB, but making playoff, I bet my house on that. If only I can get someone to bet on BUCS making payoff…easy money to make.

I love the additions. I’m very excited about this year and seeing what we can do. My only concern is Brady’s age and him staying healthy. Even if he’s lost some zip on the ball I don’t care, if he’s slower than before I don’t care. Can he stay healthy? If he stays healthy we’ve got a chance to do big things. No one that’s a Bucs fan wants to see Blaine Gabbert starting any regular season game.

Agree if TB12 is healthy and BUCS get into the playoff, that is sudden death, anything can happen. And this season only 1 team gets the bye, not 2 rested team awaiting.

RE: Bucs/Browns comparison
The Browns were more like the Bucs every offseason leading up to Hard Knocks. Totally unproven, had a few good games, won free agency. But totally unproven.
Adding a hall of fame QB and his hall of fame tight end isn’t the same as betting on Baker and Odell.
