Bill Cowher Talks Tom Brady In Tampa

Once upon a time Bucco Bruce Arians worked with Hall of Fame head coach Bill Cowher in Kansas City and then worked for him in Pittsburgh.
Cowher spent years coaching against new Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, and he sees looming challenges and an exciting marriage for The Goat and Tampa Bay.
Like most NFL people, Cowher believes the inevitable pandemic-shortened offseason will be a killer to new coaching staffs and quarterbacks with new teams, though he thinks Brady will get through it successfully.
“This is unconventional right now. No one’s ever been through this before,” Cowher said. “And so to bring a new player in, to have him learn your system, and I know Tom’s been around; it’s just a matter of terminology and I think he’ll pick it up [quickly]. But I think when you look at the greater scheme of things, for a lot of these new coaches, you have to honestly consider keeping the terminology from a year ago. You just don’t know what your terms of practice are going to be and what the terms are regards to how much time you have to develop a team, to put a system in before all of a sudden you have to start playing games.”
Cowher sees Arians keeping a close eye on the punishment Brady takes at 43 years old.
“I think B.A. will make sure that he monitors the amount of hits that he takes,” Cowher said of Brady. “And he’ll make sure he incorporate some of the things that Tom is comfortable with. But boy, I’ll tell you, Tom for the first time has some outside weapons in [Godwin] and Evans. I mean, he’s got some weapons he hasn’t had in the last few years.”
Ahh, the hit count on Brady. It will be critical as the Bucs hope to play 19 or 20 games, versus the typical 16.
It may be the biggest reason the Bucs draft a right tackle early and acquire a quality pass catcher out of the backfield. Without a reliable outlet, Brady will take more punishment than he’s used to.
And since the Bucs ignored running back in free agency, they’ve backed themselves up against a wall.

Goodell says…..NFL will play games…..that likely means they will set policies on practice in motion……all will be good……(perhaps not so much for fans at games……that may be limited…..pre-testing….
Before Brady, we could have had distancing at Ray Jay……naturally with the sparse home team crowds.

Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, and Alex Smith on one leg are all way better at quarterback than Danny Boy. Danny Boy already got his first coach fired and now his GM Dave Gettleman is on the hot seat in New York. If the Giants stink again next season Gettleman is getting the boot and Danny Boy will be toast as a new regime won’t want to tie their fate to a mediocre quarterback who is, at most, the 4th best QB in the NFC East.
Pretty sad to see a desperate Giants fan who his pounding his keyboard ranting on this Buccaneers site. Want to know why Saints fans and Falcons fans don’t come here posting/trolling about how their QB is all that? It’s because they don’t need to since they know Drew Brees and Matt Ryan are actually good at being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Danny Boy’s going to be on thin ice when Gettleman gets canned by John Mara/Steve Tisch.

There are still 3 or 4 running backs in free agency. My guess if there not satisfied with who they get in the draft they will give one a call. By that time you should get one at a rock bottom price. Its a bucs life.

Always liked Cowher. I wanted him as the Bucs coach ever since he retired. I always hoped he’d un-retire, but it didn’t happen. Fiery guy, like Gruden.

guys looking at the tape of brady forever, he doesnt take big hits. even with collapsing pockets, he just goes down. you never really get a big lick on the guy. winston was different. he would take the punishment. that is a key reason why he has been able to continue playing so long. he is also very good at moving in and out of the pocket. the pandemic sucks but the defense is intact at least.

I agree the D is still intact and that will be an advantage. Generally the D’s start out ahead of the O’s anyway and if there’s no preseason and limited prep time our D might do the opposite of last year…feasting early on while Brady and the O get up to speed.
Another positive…Brady is incredibly shrewd on and off the field. If the Bucs are still behind the 8ball on offense they will simplify and barring all else Brady knows how to throw it away. It’s not an ego thing for him…it’s all about WINNING!
And Chris agree completely that after 20 years Brady has learned how to protect himself. Of course the JW lovers will point out that THEIR guy had cojones and hung in the pocket and never gave up on a play. Yep gotta give JW that…but was that a winning formula?

Itz not going to surprise me when I read about a story in October how Brady rented a private field or airplane hanger and held private workouts with the bucs players and even an offensive coaches. So what the NFL has locked all facilities doesnt mean these guys cant get together and I’m confident Brady will find a way. Winners always find away

This is where the running game becomes a big contributor. A 50/50 split, play action, and killing clock will all contribute to TB’s longevity.
