It’s been quite awhile since Tom Brady looked up to a division champion.
The AFC East was New England’s personal whipping boy during Brady’s 20-year run in Foxborough, but the Bucs enter the 2020 season trying to end a dominant stretch atop the NFC South by the Saints.
New Orleans has reeled off three consecutive division titles and Drew Brees returns for what could be his final opportunity to add a second Super Bowl win to his Hall of Fame resume. Tampa Bay has a lot of ground to make up on New Orleans, which won the division by six games last year while sweeping the Bucs.
Saints coach Sean Payton rules over a regular-season powerhouse, but the Saints have suffered some devastating playoff setbacks in recent years and now he faces the daunting prospect of preparing for Brady this fall.
“It was a great sign by Tampa and this division has gotten a lot stronger,” Payton says. “It’s also what he brings to the rest of the team. One of the great strengths a player like Tom has is those others around him get better. I’m sure that we’ll see an entirely different type of Tampa Bay team because of his presence.”
While expectations have soared in Tampa, the Saints haven’t exactly been sitting on their helmets. A Top 10 defense added veteran safety Malcolm Jenkins, who returns for his second stint in the Big Easy, while Michael Thomas has a new partner on the flanks in veteran Emmanuel Sanders.
Oddsmakers’ projected win total for the Saints is 10.5, while Tampa Bay’s projection is 9 wins. Brady’s presence has lowered Tampa Bay’s odds to win the Super Bowl from 60-1 to 14-1 and most of the toughest matchups are at home.
That’s a blessing and a curse.

While the Saints went 6-2 at the Superdome last year, Tampa Bay stumbled to a 2-5 mark at Raymond James Stadium (+1 loss in England), continuing a chronic issue that frustrates Buc Nation. Part of the problem was Jameis Winston’s penchant for throwing interceptions at home. The Saints don’t throw interceptions, period.

While attempting 574 passes last season, Drew Brees and Teddy Bridgewater combined to throw only six picks. Winston threw six picks in his final two games as a Buccaneer.
Brady is known for being careful with the football and Saints Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Jordan can’t wait to change that narrative.
“The fact that he’ll be in my division gives me more chances to hit him, hopefully,” Jordan says. “You talk about somebody who’s been known as one of the greatest of all time for all six Super Bowls that he’s won, he’s a winner. And for that to be in my conference, I’m not excited about it.
“At the same time, I sort of am. I would love to welcome him to the NFC South — which we’ve had the last three years. But we know the talent that he has. He has Mike Evans, he has Chris Godwin, he has O.J. Howard. They’ve got Bruce Arians now and now you’ve got Tom Brady, so it’s just exciting for them to be in our conference.”

When his initial season on the Tampa sidelines ended at 7-9, Arians talked about the wide confidence gap between the Bucs and Saints. It wasn’t always that way. When the league re-aligned in 2002, the Bucs won three NFC South titles in the ensuing six years.
But since 2008, a division crown has eluded this franchise. Since that point, the Saints lead the way with five division championships, followed by the Panthers (4) and the Falcons (3).
The NFC South is a different neighborhood for Tom Brady, Ira explains.
Brady won’t be playing the Bills, Jets and Dolphins twice apiece this fall. Instead, at the age of 43, he’ll be facing down the gauntlet of Brees, Matt Ryan and Bridgewater.
That’s not a daunting task for Tom Brady, that’s an exciting challenge.
In his 18 full NFL seasons, Brady has failed to win his division only once, finishing 9-7 during Tampa Bay’s 2002 championship season.
Win your division and you’re guaranteed a playoff berth, including at least one home date in January. The battered Bucs are tired of looking up at the Saints, who have won 12 of the past 16 matchups.
It’s time for Tommy Boy to rule this division like he ruled the AFC East, lo these many years.

I really hate this team sometimes. I LOVE THIS TEAM AND THE DRAFT yet with everything that has happened since the end of the season just makes me dislike Licht, Arains and anyone who’s not a player. It makes it hard to route for this team because it means those two would succeed. I just have zero faith in their “plan” to basically sign an old a$$ QB and hope he saves their butts. I like a team that is built from the ground up and watching it develop overtime to something great. This just feels dirty and it is not the same and I truly hope at some point I feel different cause this not caring about MY team really sucks. Normally I would be in full draft mode picking out players see who fits and who doesn’t the work, but this year whatever cause it’s all about one guy who doesn’t even give two craps about Tampa. Heck he’s still writing letters to his old fans on the regular
I know I am going to get made fun of and called names but I don’t care. And yes it is some about Jameis but it is more than that, it is the feeling like they really don’t care about the fans that have been here since the beginning and they are all about themselves. Heck even Brady is trade marking “Tampa Brady” and “Tompa Bay” how is that about the team?
Brady, Arains and Licht are 100% about themselves and couldn’t give two sh!ts about the fans at all. I am a huge fan and you all know that but these guys are hard to route for. I REALLY hope at some point this feeling goes away but dang this is not the team I fell in love with so long ago and sometimes you can’t help but feel how you feel.

NDOG, I hope no one calls you names. I totally understand your perspective, and you could be right at the end of the day. Clearly, the Bucs organization still has no long term strategic plan, and they are grasping at straws, as usual. But, we have tremendous talent on both sides of the ball, an experienced, successful coaching staff, and the GOAT at QB. So let’s enjoy the ride and hope for the best.

The one thing that I am more confident in this season, even with a 43 yo QB is that we will be in every game this season to the end and have a legit chance to win in the end. I didn’t have that same confidence last season.

The fans can turn on any sports channel and there all talking about Tom and the Bucs. All national websites have 2-3 bucs stories everyday. I would say it is a great time to be a bucs fan. They got rid of a QBs who in 5 years had 4 losing seasons and one 9-7. They bring in the best to do it. What I am missing here. All I see and hear is excitement of all bucs fans everywhere. Seems like there doing a great job for the fans to me fans of the bucs and not just Winston fans that is.

Yes Jeffbuc everything is great IN THE OFF-SEASON. He is 43 freaking years old, has played for only the greatest coach of all time with great defenses, great kickers and a HOF Oline coach. How does any of that translate to us? Newsflash it doesn’t and this was done too save their own a$$ cause they didn’t fix pretty much anything last year outside of getting Shaq. Arains didn’t improve the penalities, didn’t improve the kicking, didn’t improve the secondary until week 10 and never improved the running game. So what exactly did he do well and guess what no one is talking about it cause they covered all that up by throwing the QB under the bus and bringing in the biggest name in football even though the GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME didn’t want him anymore!

I remember being in San Diego with my best friend watching the clock go to zero and my beloved Bucs winning it all. What a feeling, it was overwhelming relief and a historic night. It’s hard to believe it’s been 17 years and no playoffs wins. I want that feeling again. Tampa fans deserve to feel that again. Heck there is a whole generation of fans that have never seen our team ina playoff game. I’ll take Brady for one or two years and have a shot again. Excited!

Ndog – you really should speak to someone. Jameis Winston was just a player for the Bucs, just like Kwon. Both good players, but this is a business – and it’s all about winning.
You have very strong feelings about the loss of Jameis, and honestly at first I thought you were just trolling – but now it appears that you are sincerely upset. I am sorry to read your pain.
Keep in mind though that there are many Bucs fans who were turned off by Jameis and turned away from the team because of his off the field (and some on the field) antics. Those fans are coming back because Jameis is no longer on the team, and we have brought in a celebrity who also happens to be the GOAT. It is not just about yards and turnovers, it is about winning and reputation. Take a step back and look at how the Bucs are being viewed now nationally/globally compared to a month ago. It matters.
Nobody knows how this season will go, but I, for one, am excited and am going to enjoy the ride. I think it is time for you to let go of your pain and start to look at the positives related to our Bucs. That’s all. Good luck man.

Good article Ira. It will be nice to not cringe every time my quarterback goes back to throw. Vinny, Josh, and Winston all had the makings of being great quarterbacks, but all ended up being lousy as hell as Buccaneers. At least we weren’t the team that picked Trubisky over Mahomes and Watson. That would be a b!tch to live with.

On that very SB team NONE of our WR’s were Bucs..one McCardell even won an SB with the Redskins first.
The RB who rushed for 124 yards in the SB was an AZ Cardinal like Simeon.
Quarles our MLB started as a Dolphin and then went CFL..is he a Buc?
And of course there was the QB of that team…the Minnesota Vikings Brad Johnson.
That’s a lot of important ingredients in our ONLY SB including the QB!!! who were not drafted by the Bucs.
If Brady makes that list I’ll be very happy indeed.

@NDOG I am bummed that Bucs did not give JW another year for following reasons:
1) JW will not get a second year in the BA offense, which is usually the LEAP year in learning a complex long-field BA offense (per Carson Palmer).
2) Bucs might FINALLY draft O-line in Round 1 to protect the QB. JW, with all his faults, scrambled significantly and without acknowledgement that he extended plays from 3rd down to 1st downs.
3) Bucs might FINALLY draft a real RB threat, who can also catch passes as check down. Watching OGODIMAWFUL Dare O trot onto field on 3rd down plays – I shrugged. D’s knew a pass was coming to someone, and pinned their ears back….as Dare was zero running threat.
4) NFC division is weaker than ever, prime for winning in 2020.
5) Mostly that Bucs decision is short-term win strategy by signing Brady. And JW success in 2020 could have resulted in a long-term strategy for sustained winning (assuming JW success in 2020).
Reality is that Brady is our 43 yrd old short-term QB. BA is excited. JL will draft to protect Brady, which is great.
The INT’s will go down significantly which will boost morale for our Defense. It will be interesting to see how long our drives last if the Oline protects Brady same as JW. Argument is valid that Brady will make quicker reads/decisions to offset the rush, some of which will result in throw-aways leading to punts, but a longer field for the D to defend.
The wild card for Bucs success in 2020, all factors being mostly equal, is difference in QB scrambling ability.
If Brady does not have time to throw away, he will absorb hits like never before in his career. On other hand, to avoid hits/injury, Brady throw-aways could rise. Brady cannot extend plays via scrambling away from charging defenders. So maybe more punts, but no Turnovers. And one could argue that our D will cause more Turnovers this year with a longer overall field to play in.
I want Bucs to win; Brady pedigree brings amazing excitement to the players, and will elevate their efforts and belief that they can win any game. 2020 can be vindication for BA that JW was the problem all along…..or.

Good breakdown Redzone- I believe that the stuff also has the 2020 lack of offseason preparations due to CV-19.
I guess I’m in the minority who feels more like Ndog than the rest of JBF posters. It all does seem a bit dirty and short sighted. If Jameis had thrown anywhere near 30 interceptions his first 4 seasons I’d understand.
In statistics, an outlier is an observation point that is distant from other observations. An outlier may be due to variability in the measurement or it may indicate experimental error; the latter are sometimes excluded from the data set. Jameis should have got another year in BAs system.

I think that everyone is really missing the point with Jamies. I love him to death, but the issue really was his decision making wasn’t getting better it was getting worse. Sapp had I think the biggest point that everyone seems to be missing and the real reason he isn’t getting a second shot with BA.
He would be told with the white board here is the play we look up the field then down. Those are the options. He would do it in the meeting room, then on the practice field, but when it came to the game he would panic and look down twice and throw the pick. He wasn’t trusting his training. They thought he was getting better and would reverse the picks then December happened and BA saw he was trusting their coaching less and less. That is not showing the growth that he would reverse this next year. It is similar to what happened with Shawn King. They thought he was growing, but his problem was not practicing hard enough, so he became the kid who didn’t practice well but played well.
As a coach you can’t trust that going into a game. Sometimes they need a wake up call to make them change their ways. This might be just what Jameis needs, COVID has been harder on him than this normally would have because he would have been able to find a team by now.
But you can clearly see that his PR team does not get it right now. They are showing him working out at a gym when you shouldn’t be. (Not that he shouldn’t be working out, but seriously don’t show videos of it to the public.) What does that say about his mindset as well. It really isn’t sinking in.
Also this is a once in a lifetime chance to play the Superbowl in your own stadium. You go all in if you can do it. That is what the Bucs are doing. All in for Ray Jay Superbowl.

when you say they Judged Jameis by his December games you mean the last two game when he was playing without his top two WRs a broken throwing thumb and injured (MCL) knee. He did play 5 games in December. Had a winning record 3-2 had back to back 450+ yard games with a 2/1 TD/Int ratio during those games. Not making excuses but you would think all of December and he and the teams injuries would be taken into consideration.

I’m going to change directions here. Once again, Cam Jordan is looking forward to playing the Bucs and is vocal about it. Why? Because he can, and no one has shut him up on the field.
I sincerely hope that if Donovan Smith has ANY pride and if protecting TB can light a fire under him, on the first possession of the first game against the Saints, he “throat punches” Cam Jordan (figuratively or literally) and lets him know he’s in for 60 minutes of hell. It astounds me the DS76 actually is ok with all of this.

Stan. Yep….JW should have gotten another year. My last sentence in earlier post > “BA ca be vindicated in 2020 or”…. the Or ..is that it will become painfully obvious that JW covered up a lot of offensive issues that only a few QB’s can do, with scrambling and absorbing major body blows. 43 yr Brady is not one of those QBs. Still not confident our D can hold opposing offenses to under 25-28 ppg. And not sure Brady is going to put up enough points per game to win more than 8 games running for his life and throwing out of bounds. JW never threw his guys under the bus….
BA spent majority of season blabbing excuses for JWs Ints when he should have just said nothing. It was blatantly obvious BA was going in a different QB direction when he suddenly started publicly shaming JW. Inconsistent….hmm. Disingenuous…
At what point next season does BA turn on Brady? BA set the stage for high expectations bringing in a rental QB as the missing piece and pushed all his chips to middle of table. He will blame someone and his big bet was Brady.
JW will look back and see being let go as blessing in disguise. See Andrew Luck injury reports after years under Bruce; Luck is a superior athlete to JW in every way. JW will get signed eventually, and have a long career, and will be better for this experience.
2020 going to be an interesting year.
