Alex Van Pelt Lobbying To Mentor Freeman

February 1st, 2010

It’s February, and the Bucs are still fishing for the right guy to mentor Josh Freeman for the 2010 season.

Now career Buffalo Bills backup turned quarterbacks coach turned offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt is the latest in the hot seat before Raheem The Dream and Mark Dominik, so reports Rick Stroud, of the St. Pete Times.

After the Jeff Jagodzinski debacle, Joe wonders just how ruthlessly Van Pelt is being grilled by the Bucs’ braintrust for the open quarterbacks coach gig.

Dominik: Mr. Van Pelt, what evidence can you show that proves you’ve called plays in the NFL or anywhere?

Van Pelt: Uh, I’m just here for the quarterbacks coaching job.

Dominik: Can you prove you know how to coach a quarterback? You see, we once hired an offensive coordinator who was slower than Byron Leftwich …

Joe prefers a guy like Van Pelt, who has playing experience that he can impart to Freeman.

Also, if the Bucs are truly going to keep Josh Johnson as a “career backup,” as Raheem The Dream dubbed him last fall, Van Pelt knows the career backup role very well.

Update: 4:29 p.m. The well-sourced John Clayton, aka The Professor, of BSPN, is reporting the Bucs have inked Van Pelt to a contract.

I’m glad the Bucs are at least giving the appearance they are trying to hire a qualified QB coach. I believe Freeman’s overall development will depend on this hire, so they better get it right.

He was a QB coach in 08 when Trent Edwards was pretty decent. When he was the OC this year Buffalo’s offense really stunk it up in the air but their rushing attack was decent and they did have all those O-line injuries. I’m not sold on this guy.

Im not sure what that has to do with anything or what it even is supposed to mean but im pretty sure Rex Ryan said that, not Raheem

The debacle in London showed the world that was watching that Morris is not calling the shots. Whoever was on the other end of that land line that day was calling the shots. That to me would be a story. Who called and told Coach Figurehead to put Freeman in?

    of course he was…..
he has a family and bills due….
