Warren Sapp Talks Brady Move, Jameis Booting & More

March 18th, 2020

Legendary No. 99, as always, had a lot to say about the Buccaneers electrifying the sports world and Bucs fans from Bradenton Beach to Mulberry with the signing of Tom Brady.

Warren Sapp appeared on The Rich Eisen Show and Joe has the highlights:

*Sellouts, loads of them Sapp says, are coming to the Den of Depression. He’s fired up because he knows how hungry and passionate Bucs fans are to turn around the franchise.

*Sapp is still great and loves the football move by the Bucs.

*Letting Jameis Winston hit free agency was a bold move by the Bucs front office, Sapp said, because guys who throw for 5,000 yards are special and Sapp was adamant that the Bucs scored enough points last season to have better than a 7-9 record.

*Trade for Redskins disgruntled left tackle Trent Williams now. Sapp says the Bucs need to fix the O-line for Brady

*Sapp took a shot at Ndamukong Suh, saying he shouldn’t have more touchdowns (last year) than sacks. Joe applauded. Suh, if he returns, needs to beat 1-on-1’s and get to the QB more. Somebody’s got to make up for the lost Nassib sacks and the likelihood that Shaq Barrett won’t duplicate his 19 1/2-sack performance.

*Tom Brady “loves the screen game,” so the Bucs better find the right running back for that, said Sapp, who likes the idea of the Bucs finding a capable running draft rather than in free agency.

*Chris Godwin better give up his No. 12 jersey on his own and immediately, Sapp explained. “You pass the jersey to Tom Brady without any discussion.” Sapp likes No. 88.

*Antonio Brown? Sapp doesn’t think the Bucs should write off the thought.

*Sapp also referenced some sort of Twitter fight with him and Dan Sileo, though he offered no detail.

Most of us who watched Suh last year appreciated him. Maybe Warren and Joe did not.

Suh plays a ridiculously high amount of snaps. Who do you want to replace him with?

We had the number 1 run defense with him on the team. That makes the other team one dimensional. How many times in the 2nd half of the year did we see the other team unsuccessful running the ball on short yardage. We controlled that line.

Of course, he is not a sack guy like Warren Sapp. However, did Suh fit this defensive front like a glove last year in Todd Bowles scheme? Yes he did.

Why mess with what worked? Do you think every free agent is just going to fit a system just because he statistically had more sacks last year?

In my opinion, Suh was not the number one guy we needed to get this off season. The number 1 guy was Barrett, the number 2 guy was JPP, the number 3 guy was a quarterback.

The next guy in line in my opinion that we should secure is Ndamukong Suh.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

OMG do y’all see how handsome Tom looks in to see Bucs color. I can’t even wait for his Bucs cameo.

OMG he should totally like do a fashion charity show in Tampa!!

Did you guys see Joe’s pic a few articles back? Tom handsome as ever but in Saints colors. Yuck. But I’ll admitt Tom still looked good. Tom always looks good. Tooooo-oooo-ooooom.

Oh I just can’t wait to see all of Joe’s Tom picks and all the new ones Joe will bring us. What a dream come true!!!!

Could be Suh’s money is waiting for the FA OT picture to develop, if one could be snagged then Suh might not have a seat as the Bucs draft a DL in the 1st round. I’d love Kinlaw lining up with VV

  9. 813bucboi Says:

    joe

was SUH asked to shoot the gap and get sacks in this defense or was he asked to take on blockers and stuff the run?…..

a player has to play within the defense….SUH and VV job is to clog up the middle and let the LBs eat…..

    cant be undisciplined like GMC…..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  10. SOEbuc Says:

Wow. Sapp not sounding like a huge idiot is a rarity. PACKED HOUSE AT RAY JAY!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. catcard202 Says:

Warren Sapp’s a HOF BUC as a player & the “Michael Jordan, NBA Owner/GM” of football commentary…His takes are heart felt & rowdy, but rarely on point w/ reality.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

Did you guys know Tom Brady was drafted as a catcher by the Montreal Expos? It’s true I read about it on the internet last night when I couldn’t sleep(unlike Tom who goes to bed every night promptly at 8:30).

Just wanted to share what I am learning for any fellow fan who developed an instant mancrush on Tom. Tom to all of y’all. But to us he’s Tooooo-oooo-ooooom.

  13. Bucsdelight Says:

Getting Trent would be pretty cool. But that’s going to be a lot of money.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

Bust out some awesome new jerseys at his press conference. Bucs franchise dollars would explode in one hour.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

Bringing in a big money RT now is the best and smartest move. Tom might be telling them that’s something he wants. Young OL can be risky and BA said he doesn’t like drafting OL high. Would give us much more flexibility in the early rounds.

  16. Mister Positive Pete Says:

88 was Jimmie Giles and he’s in the Ring of Honor, isn’t that number retired therefore?

  17. Bucsdelight Says:

@Positive Pete, there are only three numbers retired to my knowledge and a quick Google search. Derrick Brooks (No. 55), Lee Roy Selmon (No. 63) and Warren Sapp (No. 99).

  18. The Coroner Says:

Would love for Bucs to figure out how to pay Trent Williams.
Warren “The eye in the sky don’t lie” Sapp knows football. However, he should join AB in a 12-step group like SLAA or SA.

  19. Jean Lafitte Says:

Joe’s bee crapping on Suh since he got here. Hey Joe, McCoy sucked!

  20. geno711 Says:

I always try to follow the salary cap and really, it appears with the JPP, Barrett, and Brady signings we will have 58 on the Roster (I think the top 53 count against the cap), That being said with the minimum going up, the Bucs will now after those three signings just have about 16.5 million left in cap space.

With 7.3 million of that for rookies, then it appears likely that 9.2 million is left for other players.

Seems no way that we can get Suh back in my opinion at this point.

We have only 1 tackle on the team. We need to probably get two vets prior to the draft. One at 4 million, one at 1 million. What does that leave for Suh?

  21. gotbbucs Says:

I find it very difficult to listen to a Warren Sapp interview. Dude is all over the map.

  22. lambchop Says:

    @MisterPositive Pete,

Not retired. Tanner Hudson wears #88 already. CG should switch to #17 or #15 (2 flipped). Would look sharp.

  23. ATrain Says:

Did Joe say we shouldn’t let GMC leave the Bucs would regret it

Yet the Panthers sent him packing and now he is playing for 6 million about half what he was asking the Bucs for

I will say I was right (GMC average player )

Now about Jameis He is SOOO GREAT that NO ONE IS TAKING HIM
The Bears TOOK Foles instead of WINSTON HAHAH

    FOLES DID YA HEAR ME

WE NEED TO KEEP a play NO ONE ELSE WANTS

Shows you what a TOOL some of you ate

  24. lambchop Says:

Beau Allen is a Patriot. That sucks for him. Bad time to be leaving Tampa unless he got paid.

  25. Big_Buc$ Says:

I’d pass on the Trent Williams trade and go younger. We still don’t know all the information surrounding his Head. I still say draft best DT at 14 that can play the 3 and 5 tech. I think the DT out of South Carolina will be perfect and he can give Suh a rest on passing downs and keep him fresh. Also I think you can still find a solid RT in the draft in the 2nd round if they don’t sign a FA. But I will say once again fix the trenches, the RB, Safety, and all of Special teams and we will be a playoff team. You don’t address those issues we wasting Brady’s time.

  26. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Patriots sought revenge for taking Brady by signing DT Beau Allen to a $8M 2 year deal.

  27. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Gen0711 says, “….. the Bucs will now after those three signings just have about 16.5 million left in cap space.”

From my research, the Bucs had $60M after tagging Barrett and signing JPP. After the signing of Brady, Bucs should have close to $30M, more than enough to give Suh $7-$10M a year.

  28. TampaTown Says:

    Bucsdelight:
You are correct sir. Though I think 47 & 20 should also be retired as Lynch and Barber enter the HOF and to keep the Mt Rushmore of Tampa Bay together forever.

  29. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Sapp…one of best all time with absolutely the worst physique. 🙂 Hard to believe just how athletic he was. He’s always hard on DTs…probably rightfully jealous Suh has made north of 100 million during his career with a top off coming. He made a lot of good points…Trent Brown is intriguing I must admit…although likely not financially feasible.

  30. TOM Says:

I do believe that the Bucs have about 29Mil left. Suh 7 mil. max.

  31. Bucsfan77 Says:

    #40 needs to be retired

  32. Adam Lakers Carolla Says:

Arse hats dissing a 1st ballot GOLD jacket wearing Buc for life? Respect what he did for the Bucs and the TB area. Sorry you cleat chasers didn’t get your precious autographs from the GOAT! His opinion right or wrong should be respected because he has a brilliant foosball mind. Peasants!
    And as always…GO BUCS!

  33. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs have Scotty Miller as their #3 WR right now…

If you don’t think the Bucs need help at WR, you’re a dope.

As for trading for Trent Williams, I don’t see how that works. I guess you move Smith to RT, and yes, that would be a very good line, but wow is that a lot of money to put into your line. 4 guys making over $10m each.

Finally… the sellouts. I can’t wait for that. That 97-02 era was so insane and fun – just a completely packed stadium, loud, rocking, the games had so much energy. Then Gruden destroyed the team because he was mad people said he won a SB with Dungy’s team (which he did). Gruden didn’t win anything with Gruden’s team – still hasn’t.

  34. Joe Says:

If you don’t think the Bucs need help at WR, you’re a dope.

So keep Perriman. He hasn’t signed with anyone.

  35. TampaTown Says:

    Great point Joe

  36. ncbucsfan Says:

    1. Trade for Trent Williams and give him $15M/yr. Move Donovan to the right side. We should still have about $14-15 Mil of cap space at that point. Tackles solidified.

    2. If necessary, cut Ryan Jensen. Adds $10 Million in cap space without any dead money. We’d have about $24M in cap space. Target his replacement in mid-rounds (Biadsz, Wisc… Ruiz, Mich…Hennessy, Temple….Cushenberry, LSU). O- Line solidifed

    3. Go after a pass-rusher in the 1st!! (Epenesa or Gross-Matos preferably to replace Nassibs role/production, though we have Anthony Nelson). 49ers just traded Buckner so they will be a pick ahead of us probably targeting Javon Kinlaw for the Dline. Therefore…..

    4. Bring back Suh!!! We need him and we lost Dline depth (Beau Allen). Plenty of run-stuffers at Dline in the draft so we can add depth here in the 4th-5th rds.

    5. Kyle Dugger in the 2nd at safety is my personal preference. Big, fast, can hit, and has instincts with ball skills. With this pick we’d solidify almost every position except RB. Do we throw money at Melvin Gordon in free agency? I’d like to. Or will Zach Moss or Cam Akers be there in the 3rd rd? Gordon is the safest way to me.

  37. CPN Says:

Wonder how much Brady will affect Licht’s GM choices, and draft choices…

I disagree with Sapp about getting AB. That dude is a headcase and is gone from football. Someone needs to seriously help him.

The right running back is crucial though. If the Bucs can’t improve at the run game, then this team is back to square 1.

  38. Bucsfan951 Says:

    Ncbucsfan:

I do believe the Bucs have 48 million in cap space but the majority of that will be eaten up by Brady’s 30 million dollar contract. That leaves around 18 million left. About 8 or so million needs to be saved for the draft. That leaves around 10 million left.

See where I’m going with this?

And I’m not sure if I would want a rookie snapping to Brady.

    Just my opinion tho.

  39. Jameis Almighty! Says:

So the Bucs go out and sign Brady just to prove a point that it wasn’t Jameis’ fault. Meanwhile Jameis sets more NFL records and the joebucs message board for someone to blame. That mans name is Jason Licht. Kicker drafting a Licht…

  40. D1 Says:

    Bucsfan,

Definitely don’t want a rookie at center. Brady prefers the middle of the line to be solid. He’s a pocket passer and that’s a necessity for anyone who is one.

RT is the spot where adding a player is essential. LT, would be great but it doesn’t appear likely.

    ———

Well he’s not on the team right now. I’m fine with keeping him if his price isn’t through the rough, but Brady really does like those small quick guys – so you know what that means. A trade, for Humphries.

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

ATrain- You were right about GMC but my dietitian says that I can only eat crow once a year!
    Trent Williams is intriguing.
Could Brady turn Scotty Miller into the next Wes Welker? He’s made a lot of unknowns into household names. Just a thought. Would rather have Perriman there.

  44. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

i think Godwin should wear 11….. 11+12+13 the magic combo

  45. GhostofSchiano Says:

Just read a report that a number of free agents are making calls requesting to play in Tampa. No names but I think this is like the lebron affect on the NBA. This team has a lot of talent now you have a well respected vet to lead them. Can’t wait for this season to begin

  46. BAfan Says:

Let Perriman go and pick up Grimes late in the draft. He is as fast as Perriman,
but is 6’5” and has better hands and can definitely stretch the field. He has been trained by and played for Ohio State and the Florida Gators. He will go late because the Gators spread the ball around and Grimes only got 700 some yards a year. If FL had not had so many great receivers, Grimes would have easily over a thousand yards both of his years there. For the back get Boston College’s Big Back in the fourth round who will remind you of Alstott. He can get those short yardage first downs and touchdowns (the latter with Vea as the blocker); he can catch passes out of the backfield, can protect Brady when the blitz comes, can wear down defenses, and preserve leads late in games! Alstott was important in winning our only Super Bowl and we need an Alstott clone to help win it again.
