Explains QB’ing for Bruce Arians.
Recently, former Bucco Bruce Arians quarterback Carson Palmer had a few things to say about Arians’ offense and how it wears on quarterbacks and receivers.
Appearing on “The Blitz” co-hosted by Bruce Murray and Brady Quinn, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Palmer talked quite a bit about how difficult Arians’ offense is to grasp. And he noted it’s almost as hard for receivers as it is for a quarterback.
You can see a clip below. Here’s the thing: It appears the Bucs are done with Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. So we are to expect a guy like Teddy Bridegwater to come in here, a guy who hasn’t been a full-time starter since 2015, and pick up Arians’ offense in a snap?
(The Tom Brady rumor just seems too wild for Joe to swallow quite yet.)
Aren’t we resetting the clock for a quarterback to learn a new offense? Joe’s not saying it cannot be done. But geez, it sure appears quarterback isn’t exactly a plug-and-play position.

‘Aren’t we resetting the clock for a quarterback to learn a new offense?’
I think what Arians is saying is that JW hasn’t learned it yet so the clock hasn’t even started on a QB learning it.. Arians said December did not go like he had hoped… He gave JW a season to evaluate him and he kept his word…JW is replaceable and Arians doesn’t seem to comfortable continuing to start JW or why not just resign him… JW is not Arians’ guy!

Are we talking about the offense that takes 8 weeks minimum to learn? That’s what BA said last year. Sooo, is our defense going to show up the first 8 weeks this year? If we are serious about a playoff run then we don’t have 8 weeks to waste.
Regardless of the QB, we will not win without a better RB and an upgraded Oline, at least at RT (maybe RG). If our run game is more potent and our defense has plays more like they did in the latter half then a few QBs could come in here and win.

JW YR-2 in BA offense could be record setting, and lead Bucs to playoffs and SB.
Not happening!
Yet – in typical Bucs fashion, Bucs will release JW, and sign a NEW QB.
A new QB who has to LEARN BA’s long-field ‘risk it” offense.

The word on Bridgewater is that he picks up a new offense very quickly.
And Brady has one of the best football minds ever, so you know he would Pick it up quickly.
And I’m sure that Rivers, who is also a very bright guy with lots of experience would also grasp it quickly.
I guess Winston was just a very slow learner since Arians said that he was making mistakes in December that his past QB’s didnt.

Someone said opposing team scored more than 100 points off Jameis turnovers… if that’s true, you can replace some of those 5,100 yards and 33 TDs by NOT giving so many points to the other guys, particularly all those pick-6s when the defense doesn’t even get a chance to salvage the play.

what about josh freeman as our back up qb…
he could be a decent back up, and should still have a strong downfield arm…
if his head was right, he could maybe even be the starter…

Addition to my post.
NET – Brady/Rivers/Bridgewater as new Bucs QB…
Quicker release; to receivers in shorter routes. Possibly more YACS….significant YACs not probable given excellent Defenses.
Prediction – higher rate of punts, due to lack of gaining required yards for third down plays, to extend drives. (Winston was excellent in this category)
Big HITS to QB, when OL collapses. Winston held up for 16 games – knee issue, broken thumb, best receivers out. With BIG body blows from pro-bowl Defenses
Good luck to Brady, Bridgewater, or Rivers. Bucs —Require a REAL RB who can block-pass a rusher. JW never had this luxury. JW had “XFL” player blocking on 3rd down.
Best to our next QB.

All Jameis had to do in five seasons is not be the reason why we lost so many games. Jameis put the team in too many bad situations and had to play balls to the wall to make up for it. Two steps forward three steps back

At least 10 picks on the WRs and if Jameis Eliminates those stupid first drive interceptions which was like 7 that puts Jaboo at 32 TDS and 13 INT that’s pretty decent for first year with BA next year will be massive for Jameis I’d love to pair him with cam Akers !

Tom, please get ready for a new offense you are going to love – the BA “Risk it -Biscuit” offense. Throw the ball long! Chunk plays! Your stats will be crazy with your accuracy to our superb WR’s.
Tom – You will have amazing options for wide-open ME13 or Godwin. You will kill it!
Crazy thought – DEFENSES might cover ME13 & Godwin, as your first-pass options. Could present more challenging options in offense scheme. Hmm. JW had this challenge, too.
Tom – keep “soft knees” at all times, dude. Meaning you are going to get HIT HARD, big time, when these long developing play-calls, break down.
Go down quickly, Tom – unless you can scramble to find an open receiver to keep the play-call alive. (JW was pretty good at scrambling and finding open receivers)
Tom, you will never throw INT’s like JW, in this same offense. No way – 30 INTs.
But Tom – You will absorb BIG HITS given the play calls that take long to develop.
You will take the SACKs and absorb the pounding, vs INTs. JW took 106 hits in 2019 —(and threw 30 INT’s and taking sacks)
No way will you have 106 QB hits, with your quicker release. Or 30 INTs
Maybe 60-80 HITS with this offense? 10+ INTsn
Tom – How many Upper body or Lower body hits are you willing to take, that are impactful?
At 43, the offense on any team, is yours. WHAT IS your ask to Bruce to adapt?

You fantasy stat lovers crack me up. Who’s gonna throw for 5k yds and 33 TD’s are missing a significant point. You don’t need all those yards to win games! Hardly ever does a fantasy stat lead up to a SB win.
There are loads of QB’s who can sling it over 4K and throw 20-25 TD’s. If you’re down points due to turnovers, you need to rack up yards to catch up.
Duh!

To the Joes and half the posters in here turnovers don’t matter. The incredibly simple stat of if you win the turnover battle you win roughly 80% of games you play is 100% ignored.

Sport … With a decent running game & defense, those passing stats (4000 yards & 20-25 TDs) could work just fine (depending upon play-calling?), PROVIDING of course that giveaways are ‘manageable’. Problem is that the 2019 Bucs lacked those other ‘niceties’ at various points in the season. When combined with excessive giveaways, it was a prescription for mediocrity … as in 7-9.
The Bucs were one of the most UNBALANCED teams in the NFL last season, as in far too heavily pass-dependent. Jameis dropped back for the most passing attempts in the NFL (626 passes thrown PLUS 47 sacks which were also passing attempts = 673 passing attempts). But wait, there’s more. The Bucs also rushed 409 times, of which Jameis attempted 59 rushes BTW (many of which resulted from ADDITIONAL broken pass plays). That means that the Bucs rushed for 37.8% of the total plays attempted (1082) while Jameis was in there. That’s a terribly low percentage.
And IF you subtract Jameis rushing attempts (59) from our total (409), those remaining 350 rushes amounted to less than one-third (32.3%) of our total offensive plays. IOW, our non-Jameis rushing attack REALLY SUCKED (it produced a grand total of 1271 rushing yards on 350 attempts). Put another way, this offense lived and died on the arm & legs of Jameis Winston. THAT’S a prescription for a 7-9 record apparently.
Fixing it MAY be easier than all of us are imaging: RUN MORE and RUN MORE EFFECTIVELY, in addition to IMPROVE THE SHORT PASSING GAME. IMO that’d require better run-blocking, better runners & better play-calling. It doesn’t require changing the attack philosophy, but rather ‘tweaking’ it so as to use the run and the short pass more effectively to keep the opposing defense off-balance and to set up the deeper passes better.
A better BALANCE of say 57% passing attempts versus 43% runs (a simple increase of 5% over what we did in 2019) would lead to 467 rushes (58 more) & 615 passing attempts (58 fewer). Improve the runners to at least 4.0 YPC (3.7 YPC as we got in 2019 is unacceptable) and Bucs would achieve 1,868 rushing yards on the season … nearly 350 more rushing yards than we got last season. That should put us in the middle of the pack on rushing (actually #14 from 2019, a 10 spot jump from our #24 ranking last season). Combined with a potent passing attack, that’s more than adequate for a successful season.
And all we need to do to accomplish that is find a new starting RT, find a new starting RB, and convince BA & BL that LESS truly can be MORE. As in ‘LESS PASSING can definitely lead to MORE WINS’.

Palmer, a 37-year old gunslinger, in his first year under Arians threw a career high number of picks – 24 I believe. Then, after that first year, he settled down and was on the top QBs in football.
If you don’t think Winston follows that same path — well, you’re an idiot.
BUT, I’ll give one but, if you can get the best QB in the history of the game, a guy who will sellout RayJay for every game, a guy that should make you a legit SB contender, then you do it. But even if the Bucs got something done – and I doubt they will – you know that Winston then goes to NE and plays a SB in RayJay next year while all the Winston haters hopefully do the honorable thing and drive into a bridge embankment doing about 100mph.
But not to worry, when is the last time the Bucs actually got something done? I still put the likelihood of Brady coming here at 0.0%. He will resign with the Pats most likely, or someone else, and the Bucs will be set here flying in Andy Dalton and Mike Glennon for tryouts.

The really sad part is Jameis wants to be a Buc…
Why? I couldn’t tell you, half of the fanbase is clueless (if the shoe fits)…
When you have to score at least 30 points every week with no threat of a running game, and your banged up QB is asked to throw the football almost 700 times in an offense he just learn behind and offensive line that’s average at best..picks will be thrown…

What Carson is also saying in that interview is that the QB has to recognize defenses and be able to change plays accordingly. Now, we know that Jameis has a real problem with staring down WRs. On the surface, does this sound like an offense suited to a QB who makes questionable decisions to start with?
Are the Bucs willing to gamble that he grasps the offense in year 2?
They better hedge their bet, regardless of who’s under center.

Winston threw for 5,100 yard and 30 plus TD’s yes he did have 30 int’s with a running back under 1,000 yards. He had 3 different coaches 3 different systems and like Palmer said BA system is hard and he thinks Winston will be really good in his 2nd season. Sign him

Most of the comments here seem to be ignoring Palmer’s actual comments in the video.
And for Palmer to see things in that context, it’s hard to believe Arians wouldn’t also see things that way, to some extent. Can’t help but wonder, or to think more and more that this is all a risky game to beat down Jameis’ market value, and hope he will sign a lower cost contract with incentives to stay.
Aside from Brady, it’s hard to see any other options with as much upside as ‘less than $27M Jameis’

Bucs Fans: The key to a Superbowl is to sign any name at QB who doesn’t throw interceptions. Interceptions are the devil and even if you throw 14 TDs per year and score 10 points a game, it’s ok as long as you don’t throw interceptions.

I love it when fans start blaming the O line because that is the only excuse left. With a quick 10 second search I found PFF that has the Bucs line graded out at number 7 and states “they were GREAT at pass blocking especially the interior lineman” imagine that! There were so many plays where Winston could stand in the pocket sipping a martini without spilling a drop I lost count. Then you have the wrong route running crew blaming two superstar receivers catching balls that most others in the league couldn’t even get their hands on making Winston look good. These fans must have also forgotten about the dozen or so dropped interceptions so yes the 30 INT’s are not only correct they are all on him.

Rod… if you think Jameis is the next Favre, Manning, or will follow the same trajectory of either of these guys…Or will follow the same trajectory as Palmer when it comes to application of Bruce’s system, you haven’t been watching much QB play. Each progresses in their same way… they have different physical, mental, and psychological makeups. We certainly hope so, if he is back. But as was said earlier…he is still making bone head throws that he shouldn’t be making this deep in his career or in this system. So there is nothing definitive about it.

One thing Carson did point out which I thought was important was the importance of being able to study the film of yourself playing in BAs offense…
No 2 QBs are the sames…Studying other QBs that played in BAs offense is on thing but studying your own reactions in certain scenarios is something completely different…
I do believe there is a method to the madness with BA…Maybe the way Jameis was handled this year under BA Co. is part of the process…Simply a method of testing your limitations within the offense…Collect all of the data, analyze it, then use it to get better…

DR – amazing post, as usual. One of the components JW would need to improve (not sure its in his DNA), is throwing a catchable ball to his outlet if the big one isn’t there with touch and catchability. It’s not his strong suit. Could it be fixed in yr 2 of the scheme? Maybe.
Another reason for abandoning the run (outside of scheme) is those pesky turnovers. One resulting in killing the run game is not likely, multiple turnovers, more likely the run game gets abandoned.
Honestly, I think JW likes it that way. He wants the ball and he wants the glory.
Not sure he has the make up (yet) to allow his teammates to do their job.
The gunslinger gene is strong with JW, for some too strong.

One, it is not BA’s offense. It is BL translating that offense. All it means is that the first receiver in the progression is the deep ball. There are secondary and tertiary receivers out there, if you can go through those progression reads.
Jameis didn’t do that. He forced the ball and did it inaccurately. Wrong shoulder, short, too high, name it and he missed by that much.
Two, the whole team will play better if they know what their QB will do that week.
Three, the offense is as important as the defense at keeping the opposing offense off the field. Jameis can’t do ball control. He can’t eat clock to keep the other team off the field.
Just about any QB could do those things better. Bridgewater might be the best offensive general we can come up with. They won’t need the 5,000 yards an 33 TDs to get past 7-9.
We need games where everyone involved doesn’t feel like they just threw up, we need a couple of happy endings. Jameis isn’t going to give us that.

A few thoughts…first…if you give MANY NFL level talent QB’s a carte blanche to throw 30 ints and just keep saying…it’s ok…just keep firing it…5,000 yards is easily doable.
Dak Prescott threw for 4,901…he’s just 100 yards shy of 5,000 with 1/3…did you read that…1/3 the number of interceptions. If he can do it…it CAN be done.
BTW Prescott got his in 30 fewer attempts and Prescott has a career record of 40-24 the opposite of JW’s 28-42. What is Dak worth?
As far as Brady…IMHO that’s a no brainer because it’s soooo much larger than just football or our record in 2020.
As for Bridgewater…he might be the guy…he’s a winner…22-12 versus 28-42.
He mastered Payton’s offense 5-0 quickly. His reaction time and agility blow JW away and he can get the ball out because of decisive reading of the field and defensive reactions.

Who would/will (even have the capability to) actually be a better QB in this offense next season, Jameis (in Year 2) or any other QB (in Year 1)… ?
Man, it seems like keeping James for at least 1 more year as a bridge QB (if not more) and bringing in or drafting another QB to compete (and learn the system) seems like a pretty good idea now to me…
I’m still all-in on Bridgewater, though. Get him if you can, Licht!
But I’d take Jameis in Year 2 over Brady or Rivers (in Year 1 of the offense) tbh or any other Free Agent QB… But draft a QB early in that scenario, please….
