Joe often calls ESPN “BSPN” because the network churns out a healthy share of BS on various fronts, but certainly not all the time.
One thing BSPN does well is compile statistical data. They’ve got all kind of professional stat gremlins (not the PFF kind) assembling spreadsheets to track everything.
Yesterday, a six-year producer known for Twittering data shared this Jameis Winston dark cloud. It’s so dark it even would be difficult for the most ardent Jameis supporter to write off as gibberish.
Jameis Winston 2019 interceptions:
25 with clean pocket (most in NFL)
23 within 1 possession (most)
22 targeting WRs (most)
19 when trailing (most)
17 vs zone defenses (most)
13 vs man defenses (most)
13 vs blitz (most)
11 on 3rd down (most)

Obviously, the “clean pocket” number is eye-popping. How is “clean pocket” defined? Joe’s not sure. Heck, Joe’s not sure of anything any longer after Bucco Bruce Arians told the nation last week that he has as solid running game in place.

Sources close to the team said that the frequency of Winston’s interceptions became a running joke between certain members of the coaching staff and they would occasionally try to guess when those interceptions would occur.

OUCH! Those are some really damming stats. I personally keep waffling between bringing him back next year and starting over at the qb position. He can’t be that bad in year 2 in the system, right? But from watching the games, its obvious he stares down recievers, and is too indecisive at times. The receivers are open and he doesn’t throw on time resulting in a pick. Or he locks on to ME or Godwin and its an easy read for the defender.

After all of those damning numbers, let’s get into semantics and try to define “clean pocket”. Good lord, the dude was a laughing stock and we’re trying to decide how clean a pocket needs to be in order to be defined as “clean”.
In Winston’s defense, he threw 30 interceptions, so there isnt much of a chance that he doesnt lead the league in every statistical category related to interceptions. The seven pick-6’s though is really impressive. That and the first posession interceptions almost weekly….okay, maybe bi-weekly. If you cant be known for being great, you might as well be known for the opposite of great.
In a day and age where QB’s are protected almost to the detriment of the game, and defensive backs are barely allowed to touch receivers, this guy managed to throw more interceptions with a “clean pocket”, (however you define that doesn’t matter) than any other QB did for total interceptions on the year.
He threw 25 interceptions with a “clean pocket”, and also managed to take 47 sacks. He can’t find the easy completions, he never has been able to. This isn’t a Bruce Arians offensive scheme issue, this is a Jameis Winston issue. He’s had to make “spectacular” plays on occasion because he’s slow with progressions and can’t get to his easy reads before the rush gets to him.
Basically after five years in the NFL, he’s no better at the QB position today than he was on day one. The first pass of his career was a pick-6, and the last play of his fifth year was a pick-6. It’s almost poetic.

Yes, there was bad. We know that. The numbers show that (interceptions in 2019, fumbles).
There was also good. We should know that. The numbers show that (TD’s, passing yards in 2019).
I don’t write this looking for an argument, the people that say turnovers usually lose you football games are correct. To say that Jameis can’t cut down on turnovers in his second year in BA’s offense is conjecture, IMHO.

He’s Ryan Fitzpatrick…..he’ll start somewhere at some point, might find his way to a playoff season or two, but the body of work will be somewhere between 7-9 and 9-7.

Actually gotbbucs, Jameis really only REGRESSED in 2 stats between his 1st year (2015) and his 5th year (2019) … GIVEAWAYS & SACKS. But those are both drive killers. And yes, they’re WHOPPERS.
o 2015: 312-for-535 (58.3%) for 4,042 yards & 22 TDs. Yards/catch 13.2 & yards/game of 252.6. Rushed 54 times for 213 yards & 6 TDs. Took 27 sacks (sack rate 4.8%). Had 15 INTs (2.8%) & 6 fumbles.
o 2019: 380-for-626 (60.7%) for 5,109 yards & 33 TDs. Yards/catch 13.4 & yards/game of 319.3. Rushed 59 times for 250 yards & 1 TD. Took 47 sacks (sack rate 7.0%). Had 30 INTs (4.8%) and 12 fumbles.
The biggest difference between those 2 years? A different offensive scheme. Parts of it Jameis adjusted very well to (the deep throws?). Other parts ate him alive at times apparently (different progressions & different decision-making requirements?). The biggest question that remains IMO is ‘Can Jameis adjust & improve going forward?’ That’s obviously for BA to answer, but I think he can. Big element of risk there, and it’s certainly not worth $30 mil. But it may well be worth $20-$25 mil IF we sign a quality backup to help mitigate that risk. I’d hate to see a replay of 2019’s 30 INTs.

What I find funny is that every possible negative stat about Jameis goes national yet any positive stat seems to get hidden deep in the depths. Take a look at 3 down conversion %, red zone, scramble yardage. But I know those don’t fit the narrative of him being HORRIBLE so of course ESPN simply ignores them. Is it clear by now that the media clearly has a hatered for this player?
I mean for example I could sit here all day and say Shaq was number 2 in the entire league in off sides penalities and ignore his positive traits and he wouldn’t quite look the same would he? Or how about the lack of sacks by Suh just looking at those and he looks like trash if I just ignore his dominance against the run. Or look at Mike Evans horrible YAC and ignore all the great catches he makes. I could go on and on but you get the point. Every player has both positives and negatives yet with Jameis the focus is always on the negatives, ask yourself why.
See this is what is simply wrong, people constantly dig up and talk about things Jameis does wrong but NEVER point what he does right. How can people not see that? It is so clear how they treat players different based upon what they want.

AGAIN…can a JW lover or hater or in betweener like me answer the fundamental question.
IF we accept all that is in the public domain about JW…he is very smart…Stanford recruit…high football IQ according to many who should know…cannon arm..should have played baseball..works as hard as any player on the team…again according to many credible sources…is a popular teammate…has a heart the size of a lion and the cojones to go with it..
SO…IF you accept all this as true and I do…what is the explanation. This issue has extended now through two different organizations..FSU and the Bucs…through more than a dozen coaches if you count QB coaches and coordinators….there is only ONE COMMON DENOMINATOR…through it all JW made bad decisions and turned the ball over at RECORD SETTING levels.
ONE thing has been consistent through ALL of this. Stop looking for the freaking excuses!!! He has earned his ATM nickname. What part of this are we not getting?
Yeah he may stop choking in 2020 and become a great player. He DOES have all the tools!!!! I do not honestly know if choking is terminal or if guys can cure that condition.

Penalties are like “stubbing your toe”.
Turnover are like “cutting your foot off”.
A team doesn’t lose possession and though less likely, can overcome a penalty. However, a turnover leaves you up ish creek without a paddle.
Do you think penalties are worse than turnovers? What about Jameis’ false start percentage as pointed out by mike Tennenbaum.
Also, Shaq obtained the most sacks in the league, while playing for the number one rush defense. Look at the RBs we held in check this year and think about how Shaq got his while not giving up the booty.
Jameis’ stats are fool’s gold bc of the price of which they come to accrue.
Shaq is a monster and you must realize that the NFL sack leader on the best rush defense is ballin his arse off.

I’d posted the same data yesterday and offered comments. This is indeed startling info. It is not just the clean pocket stat that is eye-popping. Consider (and I will again say) in addition to the above, Maybe he has trouble with zones? Man? No, he has trouble reading the field PERIOD. And he leads the league in throwing them on 3rd down (he’s a drive killer) and in the 4th quarter…he’s a game killer. The first overall pick at five years in with the best receiver corps in the NFL should be going down the field and winning games on the final drive. He’s not doing that nearly enough.
Being the MOST in any category is alarming. Being MOST in all of them is shamefully embarassing and is a flashing red danger light to stay away from paying this guy to run your team.

Every line item tells of at least one deficiency in the Jameis game.
The clean pocket problem means that he holds the ball too long.
The one possession problem says that he can’t stick with a plan. The first series is scripted and he is off script.
The WR problem means he is forcing the ball
The 19 when trailing talks about the holes he digs for the team
All of the rest of them are permutations of his inability to read the defense.
How can you fix all of that? It looks to be an impossible task when you look at this past season. Jameis finally got some accuracy in the longer ball. To pay for that his short game fell apart. He couldn’t throw an accurate out route at all.

HERE’S A QUESTION FOR BUCS FANS…
Many Jameis-lovers on this site like Mr. Ndog, think Jameis’ 5,000+ yards and 30+ TDs tell the story that Jameis Winston is one of the best QBs in the NFL and the Bucs would be dumb to not resign him to a long-term contract.
Compared to Jameis Winston’s stats last season, how about a different QB that would put up these stats…
4,926 Passing Yards
34 TD Passes
24 INTs
66.7% Completion Rate
100.3 Avg. QB Rating
Would you say that QB is better or worse or very similar to Winston’s 2019 Season?
The INTs are definitely lower, the completion % is higher, and the QB rating is higher.
Logic would dictate that’s a BETTER QB and a BETTER SEASON than the one Winston had in 2019.

These are Fitzpatrick’s pro-rated stats over the entire 2018 season if he had started all games; extrapolating his 7.5 games he did play in, and take his stats (good and bad) and projecting them out to an entire season.
And this was without Chris Godwin starting across from Mike Evans for better consistency.
So PLEASE all your Jameis lovers… go on and tell us how Jameis is the only QB that can put up big numbers on this Offense.
That is 100% MYTH.
There are many QBs that can come in and from Day One put up big numbers like Jameis with this same Offense, and most likely do so with fewer INTs and fumbles and produce more WINS.

Speaking of “choking”. I’m old school. I hate to use this term. I was embarrassed for JW when BA explicitly and PUBLICLY made sure we had NO competition for JW on the 2019 Bucs because ??? trying to help JW’s battered confidence after ’18?
Again the old school guys I cheered for growing up would not have enjoyed that at all…they would have WANTED the competition because they were COMPETITORS!!! They would have resented even the thought of a job being “handed” to them much less stated so publicly.
So if we bring JW back just know what we’re hoping for…not that he has enough talent…he clearly does…that he’s smart enough…he is…that he’s motivated, tough, hard working enough…he is all those things already. He cannot improve.

This is the element that concerned me MOST about last season. There are still so many people that talk about his “poor decision-making”, and yet for the most part, the “stupid decision – trying to make something out of nothing” picks have gone down to a degree.
The picks now are either just bad throws, or YES (as you say) field reading errors.
How do you suddenly fix that?
I have always been a Jameis fan, but we have to be honest here. This is a concern for me too.

A lot of what you said made absolute sense. I did disagree with this comment. I thought he threw a TON of great out routes this year, and does every year. It accounts for a lot of his overall production. — He definitely threw a couple of bad ones near the end of the year though, that resulted in pick 6’s.

Yep, those are stats are KNARLY ugly. But if we end season 9-7/10-6, different focus. So in addition to JW TO’s, let’s share some blame.
Start w BA. Giants game, JW gets us down the field at end of game. What does our coach do? Try to put ball in end zone? Use one of our stud RBs? (oops, skip that one). Nope. He backs us up 5 yards for our rookie kicker. Doink – yep, JW stats killed us here. TN game – BA throws another stupid challenge flag for pass interference, just to make a point. Can’t challenge a fumble later. And vs Seattle, on the road, yeah JW sucked. Oops, Offense shines. Our D never got on the plane.
Lot of blame for the crappy season, and the guy who touches the ball every play, is going to get too much credit when winning, and too much blame when losing. Bring on the next guy. Let’s see what he can do. At least 10 INTs in this offensive biscuit scheme. It will be interesting next year.

The answer to why he does this with all his innate talents boils down down to one word: SLOW. He just processes slower… he’s smart enough and talented enough to get to the 100% correct “answer” but too slowly to actually execute that answer. He knows this about himself and has coping mechanisms that include locking on to a target but doing so makes him predictable.
This directly leads to more picks, more sacks… and also more scrambles and more jump ball throws. The only solution is to ask less of him but he makes that hard by asking for too much money… and his flaws may be such that even if you put him in an otherwise perfect situation (Tennessee/Tannehill or SF/Garrapolo) there’s no guarantee he wouldn’t do more harm than good with turnovers during those few times you asked him to make a play.

No you cant blame the line for winston trying to extend every busted play of a game instead of throwing away or just running when it’s not there. To say the run game is at fault when dropping back to pass the ball Is just stupid.
It’s pointless to blame coaching hindsight because there is no perfect game plan so it’s up to players to adjust the play or be better than the other guys.
No one is calling out coaches for bad playcalling like Seattle players did on the last play of the superbowl against the Patriots. That’s a bad play call so stop with the excuses.
Even if we were 9-7 and pulled out a couple wins ba would be smart to try for better than all Winston head scratching turnovers. Even when stats like this shine a light on the obvious Winston nuthuggers still come out and try to blame everyone else for his pathetic decision making skills

Ndog…answer to your qeustions: Because of Winston. Had Winston taken his team to the end zone more often the field goals would not be required. Had Winston done more to put this team on his shoulders as the first overall pick and take them down the field to the end zone, and no rely on a low round rookie kicker to win for him, those games would have been won.

I can understand why some JW fans may think he’s being picked on more than his team mates regarding penalties and turnovers…
The one thing to keep in mind is the position JW holds at QB. This position will garner the majority of criticism and accolades because of the responsibility it requires.
Along with the responsibility comes the associated pay for the services rendered from the highest profile on a football team.
Good or bad the QB is the leader of the team on the field and shoulders the majority of blame when the team loses.
With losses the QB will be under the microscope by both fans and media alike. Yes, the media and fans alike can be harsh at times but if they are given the ammunition such as glaring stats for turnovers from the leader of your team that would make it easier to do so.
Many fans on this site are not JW haters but bucs fans looking for the biggest reason why their team is doing so bad. First check will always be the most consistent one rearing it’s ugly head.
If a couple of stats are favorable and the majority are not that is what we have in front of us now.

Several JBFers have noted how frustrating the Pick-6s are. And yes, I agree … 7 Pick-6 in ONE year is not a good show. No way, no how. But Jameis doesn’t rank anyplace near the top of the list in that category after 5 years (he has 11 Pick-6s in that period). Some folks might be surprised at some of the names at the top of the Pick-6 list:
1 – Brett Favre – 31 (20 years)
2 – Dan Marino – 29 (17 years)
3 – Joe Namath – 28 (13 years)
4 – Drew Brees – 27 (19 years)
5 – Peyton Manning – 27 (18 years)
6 – Philip Rivers – 24 (16 years)
7 – Carson Palmer – 23 (14 years)
In his first 4 years, Jameis ‘only’ had 4 Pick-6, and so in a 20-year career he might’ve not even ranked in the Top-10. But then ballooned last year with an incredible 7 Pick-6s. And because of that bizarre year, he’s now averaging a tad over 2 Pick-6 per year. So did Joe Willie Namath. Peyton Manning averaged 1.5 Pick-6 per year, and so did Brett Favre & Philip Rivers. Drew Brees comes close to that, while Dan Marino & Carson Palmer averaged over 1.5 Pick-6 per year.
I seems like those who throw the ball a LOT end up with more Pick-6s than others. Wow, what a revelation. Jameis led the NFL last year not just in INTs, but also in Passing Attempts (626). Add in his sacks, and he dropped back for 673 total passing attempts.
So let me see if I’ve got this right. You take a QB who’s known for throwing INTs and you put him in the situation where he has to throw a LOT MORE passes. And in that situation he has no significant running game, and oh ya, make sure that his TEs are primarily used as blockers. After the way the Buccaneers treated Jameis, I am not a fan of the Buccaneers. The Bucs will always be what they have always been. A losing team without fans outside of Tampa. He was accused of rape and they still drafted him #1 overall and made him set for life financially.
He did some stupid and sexual assaulted and Uber driver and they kept him on the team when many organizations would have cut him due to his past.
Year in and year out he has led the league in turnovers yet only benched ONCE in his career so far because Fitzpatrick was playing so well. Other than that, Jameis has been given more 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chances than arguably anyone.
Even when he played like trash and lost games, the Bucs continue to believe in him and let him start.
So how in the world have the Buccaneers treated Winston badly? They treated him more than fair.
Oh… they are treating him badly NOW because they may not want to bring him back?
That’s not treating someone badly, that’s FOOTBALL. For all the big numbers Jameis puts up he’s a LIABILITY. He gives the opposing team great starting field position, game in and game out. He’s DIRECTLY responsible for many losses. Not solely responsible for all losing, of course, but he has heavily contributed for sure.

He also had the most attempts in every one of those scenarios. His season was bad but not that bad. You can spin it however you want but two things are for sure. Unlike a lot of other QB’s he has the heart of a lion and his ceiling is so much higher than any other quarterback that could currently replace him.

Who cares if you are first if your INT % isn’t that high (it is with Winston though). Bottom line, that metric of “most” in those categories is pretty meaningless if your team is throwing it more than anybody.
