So What About Matt Gay?

Joe gets this a lot, so Joe decided to do a bit of research.
Whenever someone brings up all the picks by Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, those who want to bring him back for 2020 (and beyond?) often blame Bucs rookie kicker Matt Gay for choking away games and preventing the Bucs from having at least a .500 record.
Gay was one of five NFL kickers who attempted at least 30 field goals last year and made 77 percent or less of their attempts. Gay had the 77 percent. Of those five kickers, only San Francisco’s Robbie Gould (74 percent) was on a playoff team.
We all know Gay choked badly against the Giants in a game the Bucs should have won in a laugher if they had any decent running backs or simply if Bucco Bruce Arians had kept his foot on the gas. Still, that doesn’t let Gay off the hook there.
In an overtime loss to Seattle, Gay missed a 50-yard attempt at the end of the first half. The Bucs led at halftime 21-13 so Joe cannot hang Gay for that loss.
Against Houston where Jameis was largely horrendous, the Bucs lost 23-20 in a game where the only Bucs’ score in the second half was a Gay 41-yard field goal. Gay did miss one field goal, a blocked 54-yard attempt midway through the first quarter. Hard to pin Gay for that loss.
In the final game of the season, Gay was truly awful. Gay missed kicks of 49, 44 and 34 yards in a game that was lost in overtime when Jameis threw a pick-six. If Gay just makes one of those field goals the game likely doesn’t see overtime.
And had the Bucs beat the Dixie Chicks that December afternoon, you wouldn’t hear half the bellyaching about Jameis that is going on now.
Did Gay have a bad season? Yes! Did he prevent the Bucs from a winning record? To be fair, no. But Gay did keep the Bucs from an 8-8 record. And in the wake of that awful kicking a guy like Jameis not only may lose his job, but also tens of millions of dollars.
This seemingly never-ending nightmare of Bucs kickers has gone past the point of being a dark comedy.

That last falcons game was not some Jameis HOF moment game; I am guessing people forget the great grabs perriman made to allow jameis to throw TDs that game. So to say Jameis thre 30 ints and maybe 12 were not his fault there were also 12-15 throws that should have been picked last season and definitely that heave, jameis threw up for anyone but somehow perriman came down with it.

Couldn’t agree more. They win that game against Atlanta in regulation (Gay makes the kicks), then no 30th intercepttion and not nearly all of the hysterics.
People will say it’s his complete resume they look at with Jameis, but I maintain that the way the Atlanta game ended might be what ends Jameis’ career with the Bucs.

The last game killed him. Gay had a 85% field goal rate up to that point. He made a long of 58 and was one of the best kickers over 50 yards. Gay will be fine.

It was Gay’s rookie year so he should get a pass. He will be better in 2020. The Winston lovers like to divert blame from Winston to Gay on losses, and he was horrible in the Atlanta game. However, like the rest of the 2019 rookies, they showed promise and we are all confident in them for 2020. Winston’s rookie season was understandable because he was a rookie and we all thought he would be great. But year after year and coach after coach has shown the Winston will simply be what he has been for 5 years, a losing QB with potential enough to make a coach think that he can “fix” him. Hopefully, the Bucs realize that another team needs to try and fix the un-fixable.

Lost us 2 games but fans have such low kicking standards around here that they think he’s good because anything looks good next to Aguayo and Nick Folk.
Connor Barth and Patt Murray are the only kickers in recent memory who haven’t had mental breakdowns on the field. But Licht dumped them.

Sure…..he cost us a couple of close games…….but you can always blame the obvious…..missed kicks, fumbles…..interceptions….a terrible penalty at the wrong time…
But…it’s truly the overall play throughout the game that wins or loses games…..defense not holding…..offense becoming impotent for the entire second half….playcalling……gameplans….
And…..we continue to have this narrative from Joe in the Giants game that we should have thrown or run the ball at the end of the game……BS……we went for a chip shot FG to win…..like every coach in the NFL would call….it’s done all the time….setting up for the FG deliberately………Gay just missed….

If he lost the Giant and Falcon last game how did he not prevent the Bucs from having a losing season? I agree completely that had he made one of three in that final game there’d be a hell of a lot less belly aching about Jameis. I’d also add that the defense also gave up a long TD drive at the end of regulation when they seemed more interested in celebrating Shaw’s sack record than stopping the TD.
All that said I think Gay will be a good kicker in this league, hopefully with the Bucs. That shouldn’t prevent the Bucs from going into camp with a little competition.

Winston had a chance to chance to save Matt Gay’s missed kicks debacle versus ATL. Something the team captain, veteran, first overall pick could have and should have done. Instead, Winston threw the poor rookie under the bus by throwing yet another pick six. Shameis!

Unreasonable Joe, you write as if one were to throw away the final two games that no one would call into question his decision making and his ability to play consistently. Even if you throw away the final two games he *STILL* would lead the NFL in turnovers. The fact that he hasn’t been extended already shows that he’s a first round bust.

I don’t know why this is hard to understand for some people. He’s being evaluated by how he performed his job. Even if you take away the last two games how he has performed and improved at his job over the past five years is being evaluated. Even without those last two games his decision making and performance was still suspect over his career including this season.

To say had Gay made one kick we wouldn’t hear half the Winston bellyaching going on now is the dumbest thing ever written on this site. The INTs were a problem with Winston while Gay was in high school. And they are a problem five years later.
This is why so many losers like Jameis get off the hook…how about expecting a little accountability for a change, Joe. Instead, you continue to prop Winston up for things he is not.
Gay has his own problems, but to even suggest he has anything to do with Winston’s BS going on for years shows how dumb this Joe is. And Joe thinks that somehow others would have glossed over Winston’s serious issues…OMG that is stupid.

Ok so the games should play out the exact same way just change the kicker making his kicks but everything else remains the same? Lol the other team doesnt change up their strategy at all to compensate being down more points? Uh ok no that doesn’t sound stupid or unrealistic at all.

Why is it Joe can accurately and concisely break down all of Gay’s kicks as well as their impact on the various games but he cannot break down all of Winston’s picks, fumbles, and stupid penalties, as well as their impact on the games?
The local fish wrap did just that and credited Winston with 6 losses.

Maybe Gay should be the QB, and Jameis should be the kicker? After seeing Berto have a terrible rookie season, and he was a 2nd round pick, Licht was foolish enough to start another rookie kicker in an all important year. Licht’s the one to blame for repeating the same mistake. Licht loved Gays big leg, but what good is kicking it 60 yards if you can’t hit 33 yard extra points? Just like Winston’s big arm if he keeps throwing it to the other team? Both Jameis, and Gay haven’t lived up to their draft status. Let’s point the spotlight on the guy who picked them, Licht. It’s not their fault one’s a turnover machine, the other misses kicks. It’s Licht’s fault for picking them in the first place.

Only a couple of kickers are consistently good at over 50 yards field goals. Gay has the leg but didn’t have the accuracy last season.
He will be better because he will have a year with the NFL’s narrower goal posts and has now played through a sixteen game season.
Last season he helped the Bucs lose two games, both could have been won with a decent QB. The hardest thing about who lost is the Gay was a rookie and Jameis was in his fifth year. If you want it in black and white, Gay directly contributed to two losses, Jameis directly contributed to six losses.
That is the bottom line.

You guys do realize if he made the kicks in the NYG, Seattle, and Atlanta games Tampa would be sitting at 10-6 right? Regardless if Winston threw 30 Ints nobody would be talking about it because Tampa would have been in the wildcard race. I’m sorry he gets no pass for me and to say he is a rookie is not an excuse. He has only one job and thats to kick. Much as the fans blame Jameis look at the NYG games. Lead the offense down the field and what happens? BA gets cocky and takes his foot off the gas with 1 timeout left. I would have took ran a play or two. Its been a lot of games the Kicker has cost many losses in since Jameis has been in Tampa. Lets not forget he missed damn near every kick the 1st time playing in Atlanta. 0-3 in PATs and 1 block.

Wow, if we got rid of every guy that didn’t live up to expectations early on, we would’ve cut Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber, John Lynch, etc. The kid was a rookie, and had some bright moments, and has a strong leg. He did cost us some games, no doubt.

Ah Jameis, the sacrificial lamb, he must perish so Matt Gay can live.
This is the side no one talks about when it comes to Winston, his selflessness to throw that pick 6 at the start of OT. He heard the fans chanting nasty things at Matt Gay and saw him on the verge of tears, so what did he do you ask? He walked up to the rookie, put his arm around him and said “they’ll forget about your kick in no time”. Ten minutes later we are chasing Jameis with pitchforks and Matt Gay gets a second chance.
All praise Jameis the Selfless!

Winston threw picks yes but at the beginning of the season our defense of backs were horrible. Toward the middle the defense stepped it up and our running game remained the same. We had lineman and both pro bowl receivers was hurt. Our kicker toward the middle of the season started missing easy kicks after Winston took the offense down the field to win the game. Sign Winston

The 77% FG conversion rate from Licht’s 2019 5th Rd Pick K – that had pre-existing confidence/depression issues …Is barely better than the 71% conversion rate thrown up by Roberto Aguayo – The same K this FO though was worth trading away 3rd & 4th Rd picks to move up into the 2nd Rd for in 2016.
Granted – Gay’s leg is stronger…But if 77% on FG’s wasn’t alarming enough – he also carried a XP conversion rate of less than 90%…I mean, Aguayo missed 7 FG’s & 2 XP’s in 2016…And got cut before the 2017 season.
Gay missed 8 FG’s & 5 XP’s in 2019….???
I find this mind boggling…These types get Drafted & a clutch SEC proven K like Austin MacGinnis still cannot get a NFL cup of coffee, when he’s could be signed off the street for base coin.
(Though, thanks to the XFL…and his 100% FG & XP conversion rate for the Dallas Renegades – Maybe he gets a shot in 2020.)

I’m sure its been said on here before, but some of the people complaining about Winston’s pick 6 against the Falcons, also complained about Winston’s TD to Godwin against the Saints. The season ended, nobody got hurt in a meanless overtime, and we get a little bit better draft pick.

With a couple of games left in the season, I remember thinking to myself… “FINALLY… we have a Kicker that we can rely on for the next 10 years.”
That Falcons game shook my faith a bit.
The guy has a cannon for a leg and we know he can regularly hit them from 55 yards. But his performance in the clutch has got me VERY concerned.

Easily one of the most absurd posts by one of the Joes I’ve read here.
FIRST…no ONE player wins or loses an NFL game but some have a major hand in the outcome.
Usually a couple of points of judgement…did a play end a game and even an entire season and perhaps JW’s career in Tampa. Rightly or wrongly far more importance is attached to the final or critical play.
Next point of judgement are the stats…is a guy consistently bad…JW…uh in terms of turnovers is five years not enough?
Gay was NOT consistently bad…his “bad” was that he was inconsistent. He clearly had the leg and skill set. This year we will find out if he has the experience to not choke again in ANY games.
However by the JW standard does this mean Gay gets another four years? He did kick the longest FG in Heinz Field history at 55 and he added a 58 yarder in the regular season. IE Like “Blameless” Gay has some flashy stats to go with his misses. Do we not want to give him four more years like JW to see if he can connect on enough 50+ yarders to offset his misses?

Gay missed a couple kicks in another game too and fortunately got do-overs because of penalties but his bad performance has nothing to do with the 30 INT’s. Those missed kicks may have had an impact on the win-loss record but don’t excuse the 6 pick 6’s and 30 INT’s. If we’re being honest they both need to have competition or be replaced.

Even winston knows that when you throw a pick 6 on the last game of the season you cant blame the loss on plays earlier in the game. Winston KNOWS he cant say that loss was on matt gay.
Regardless of the missed kicks we had the ball in our possession with a chance to win the game period end of debate. The very moment you throw a pick 6 in overtime the loss is your fault. Is anyone blaming rojo for fumbles in a lose? Perriman for dropped touchdown pass? No you shouldn’t because it’s always about the next play you cant dwell on false starts and missed kicks or defense giving up an easy score not when you have the ball with a chance to make a play yourself

The Kid has a strong leg, something you cannot teach. It is all mental as he has more problems with the shorter range than the longer one. Hopefully with his rookie season behind him, he’ll have a breakout year.

Gay gets one more season, IMO. We decided Neil O’Donoghue wasn’t good enough, and he proceeded to kick for St Louis for a decade. We decided Matt Bryant wasn’t good enough, and HE proceeded to kick for Atlanta for a decade

So a rookie kicker who missed 3 FGs in a game (not good BTW) might be responsible for Jameis losing his job and tons of money? Hmmm, Jameis’ 2 INTs & RoJo’s fumble lost that led to a Falcons’ FG apparently don’t count?
Had Jameis not thrown that last Pick-6 and had we gone on to win that Atlanta game, Jameis STILL would’ve finished the season with 29 INTs (including 6 Pick-6s). Somehow I don’t think that last Pick-6 put this whole issue of Jameis returning over-the-top. Just a guess though. Now on the other hand, Jameis’ insistence that ‘He be ballin’ and his demand for $30 mil plus MIGHT just have put this whole thing over the top. I think the approrpiate word is ‘delusional’.

I love Matt’s leg strength, but cmon man, what a choker. I knew from the first clutch miss against the Giants, he was not the guy.
We have to find a clutch kicker. Percentages are important but when in the game and the circumstances around each kick is what separates good from bad kickers.
Gay is not clutch, this is evident. Find us a kicker who doesn’t miss at the end of halves and games please

We still have no clue how good these DBs are because it’s only a limited sample size and they were absolutely toasted in 1st half.
Carlton Davis has played a lot and has been solid, not great but solid.
Jamal Dean will be a solid system zone CB like Mike Jenkins in his prime but is unlikely to be a lockdown Superstar.
SMB is unknown as he has played very few snaps.
It’s all still unknown but they were bad for half the season.

Gay will be fine – the Bucs should, and will, stick with him. But the guy lost 2 games for the Bucs completely by himself. The Bucs, at worst, should have been 9-7, and if you count the Titans game the refs stole, they’re 10-6. That’s with a defense that didn’t show-up for half the year and losing two pro-bowl WRs down the strech.
The team is really close to being an elite team – which is why I’m picking them for 11-5 next year if Winston returns (and again, I’m not a homer when it comes to pick, I haven’t picked anything more than 9-7 since 2004). I think Winston continues to get points, should be top 3-5 yet again, and cut downs on turnovers. Meanwhile I think Gay finally makes a game winning kick for the first time in his life (he’s never made a game winner at any level, ever). Also the defense then builds on how they ended last year and everyone is excited to finally have winning football.
Well not everyone, the triggered anti-Winston morons will be throwing a fit wanting the team to lose because they’d rather the Bucs fail than have Winston at QB. They’re literally that deranged.

Totally unfair Joe…if Jameis is Mr. Excitement because you never know when he will throw a TD or pick 6 and rip our hearts out, why isn’t Matt Gay Mr. Excitement2, or Mr. Gay Excitement. He will make a 50 plus kick then rip your heart out with a missed game winning kick.
I know he isn’t the lowest percentage in the league, and though Jameis may be the league leader, that doens’t exclude him from the moniker.
Both guys are equally capable of blowing games, big time. Just because Gay is a rookie, doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve the same treatment of a player that has perfected the art over five years.

Tampa Bay Demon:No doubt, and Jameis is the FIRST ONE to have a guy’s back for something like that. He is good with his teammates that way, and it is another element that I am really going to miss (if the time has come.)
Sometimes you don’t know what you had until it’s gone (and you have worse). I’d like for Jameis to have another year, another year in BA’s offense (the 5 years comments are BS, IMHO, he didn’t have terrible interception totals in the first 4 years).

I hear ya man.
Another thing people will miss is a QB who never throws it short of the sticks on 3rd down, and is able to regularly convert 3rd and 15’s. — You just don’t get that from every QB. — We have had many around here who didn’t do ANY of that.
Granted, we can’t excuse the number of picks. We all get that.
But yes, you are right, there are many positives to his game that we have taken for granted.

Honestly, I don’t think Jameis can currently play well enough against good teams to win more than one or two games in a row without imploding.
But I could be wrong…and if we wanted to try a 20 mil. tops experiment to see if he can grow out of his proclivity to throw game castrating picks, I’m fine with that.
But it doesn’t sound like that is the plan for either party.

Just so it’s clear to everyone AGAIN.. Jameis never claimed he’d be ballin’ in reference to himself or his year. He was ask about coming back next year and the team being able to resign all the free agents. His answer was that he thought they’d all be back and they’d be ballin’. He wasn’t bragging about his play in 2019.

When your franchise QB has 1 TD and 5 INT’s when we were behind by 7. It highlights a more serious problem than just the kicker missing kicks at the end of the game. The job of the franchise QB is to lead the team to game winning TD’s
not field goal attempts. Its hard to win in the NFL when you have 10 INT’s in the 1 st Quarter and 10 INT’s in 4 th quarter..

And by the way Joe, Jameis has to make the 3rd and 5 completion at the 12 minute mark of the fourth quarter at the Giants 30 yard line. This is a classic example of an INT at the worst possible time that was thrown right at the safety.

Coming out as a rookie starting kicker with a brand new coaching squad can make you nervous your first year. Second year he will step his game up from more practice and coaching. And he’s got a boot. Hope this happens or It’ll be another addition to the kicker grave.

Daily Reminder: Bruce Arians took a delay of game penalty to back up the kicker so Matt Gay would have an easier time kicking a FG around the 30 yard line.

Is not an NFL WR core and I dont even know if thats good in the XFL and you absolutely need your kicker to make those kicks given these circumstances. It really is amazing when even had a chance to win those WK 16 +17 games.

If Gay doesn’t shank his 1st XP & get 2nd XP blocked (low kick) against the NYG…Does Daniel Jones get his 1st career win??? No, Bucs win 33-32.
Does that absolve JW3 for his INT’s & Pick6’s through out the year…No, but it was the difference between 9-7 & 7-9, even w/ JW3 being the sole 30/30 club QB.

I’m curious , if gay made the extra point vs the Giants that’s a tied game. If the other wasn’t blocked , do you think it’s not going to change the Giants decision to go for 1? What if the Giants went for 2 and we’re successful, then it’s not the same discussion as you claim .
Same with Atlanta. You really believe that everything stays the same except for one play? I’m going with yes because that’s how you are arguing it.
But ultimately, it’s ridiculous to play the what if game . It is just as easy to use another play that didn’t happen and claim if it did, we’d have won. Seriously,

D1… I was bored & like being an instigator at times. 🙂
I get playing the woulda/shoulda/coulda leads to an argument over the infinite set of potential outcomes from changing 1-2 plays a game….However, there is no denying that Gay played a part in both the NYG & ALT loses…Even w/ JW3 mistakes, the Bucs may have came out on top – if he converts 2 XP against NYG & a chip shot FG against ALT.
No one is huffing over missing a 58yd kick before half – but if the expectation for a QB1 is to take full blame for loses – when even with his mistakes he played well enough for the team to escape w/ a W if a K makes his kicks…Then K’s need to be held to a base line standard that XP’s & FG 46yds & in, should be damn near automatic conversions.
77% on FG & 89% on XP…. That’s hard stats to look at, for a K.
Aguayo got tanked for 71% FG & 94% XP (7 missed FG & 2 missed XP’s in 2016)…Gay in 2019 = 8 missed FG’s & 5 missed XP’s, to go along w/ #’s stated above.
Meaning, he’s not much of an upgrade over a guy the FO drafted in the 2nd round, only to cut before yr2…After dumping a 3rd&4th round pick to trade back into the 2nd rd – because FO was afraid the NE Belicheats were going to take Aguayo there… (WHO DOES THAT???)
Fact remains that in 2019..Gay was the #32 best NFL K @ XP conversion % & #31 @ FG conversion %.
