Throwing The Longball
March 3rd, 2020Is Teddy Bridgwater, whow the Bucs are reportedly panting over to wear red and pewter (presumably) to lead the Bucs to the Super Bowl at the Den of Depression, the right man to replace Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston?
Maybe.
It would take an adjustment for Bridgewater, not known for long passing, and perhaps also from Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.
Joe will recount a conversation he heard last month on the best damn football show on radio, “Movin the Chains,” co-hosted by former Bucs scout and NFL personnel man Pat Kirwan and former Bucs quarterback Jim Miller.
The topic was the Bucs and Bridgewater.
Background: Miller, earlier last season a Jameis supporter, totally turned on Jameis after his two final games, where Jameis was awful. Miller has stopped just short of suggesting Jameis threw his final pick-six of the season on purpose. Miller said that was “lazy” like a pass on the third day of training camp.
As a result, Miller was outraged and said if he were Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, he would want nothing to do with Jameis.
Kirwan is sort of on the fence with Jameis, though leaning heavily like Simone Biles on a balance beam to letting Jameis walk if he were Arians. Kirwan would keep Jameis if he agreed to play for a rock-bottom salary and no guarantees of starting.
A called asked about Bridgewater and the Bucs, and Kirwan was lukewarm. Like others, Kirwan doesn’t believe Bridgewater is a fit in Arians’ throw-deep offense.
“How old is Bruce?” Kirwan asked, though fully aware of Arians’ age. Miller noted Arians is 67 and Kirwan replied, “How many coaches who are 67 are willing to change their offense?” Miller guessed none, to which Kirwan said, “That would be my guess.”
Without going into a deep film study of Bridgewater, it’s hard to tell if he can actually throw deep consistently well.
For both Jameis and Bridgewater, Joe looked up air yards, or average yards downfield of a target per attempt. Joe only had easy access to the last two years but in both, Jameis’ average yards per target was damn near double that of Bridgewater.
Bridgewater’s average yards per target the past two seasons is an incredibly consistent 6.1 yards in 2018 and 6.2 yards in 2019 (Drew Brees, for example, averaged 7.1 and 6.4).
Like Bridgewater, Jameis’ average yards per target is incredibly consistent, despite playing for two different coaches and two different coordinators in two different offenses. Jameis averaged 10.8 yards in 2018 and 10.4 yards in 2019.
So can Bridgewater throw deep(er)? Can Arians convert to a dink-and-dunk offense? Maybe we will find out this fall.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:07 am
you guys and your long ball JW stats.
it’s because crabman can’t read the D at the line of scrimmage and resorts to waiting, waiting until he can throw to one of two guys. he has an arm, but a lot of those stats are mere hail mary’s thrown to ME.
let’s stop with the jw is a longball expert. it’s because he sucks
anybody but the ATM
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:18 am
stats spin galore for the pro WinSTUNNED Joe…He f’n sucks! End of story [stories]!
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:19 am
Don’t know what’s dumber the rumors of Bridgewater etc or the fans actually believe there is betters options in Tampa than Jameis. It’s Tom if he would come to Tampa I’m from Boston and it would insane if he left NE.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:19 am
No one knows what the plan is until March 16th.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:19 am
Dump Down Teddy I am glad I didn’t renew my tickets, 4K plus to watch dink and dunk football ho thanks! I would rather get strapped to a board and have someone pour ants down my pants!
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:22 am
All 32 NFL QB’s can throw a football 50-60 yards, half can do it very accurately! Teddy is very accurate and is known for great decision making, hence he won’t have to wait 10 secs(Jamies sacks himself standing too long in pocket) to find a receiver downfield lol most likely he’ll see O.J. or Godwin open on the intermediate routes! Just keep us in winning situations and trust the defense!
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:24 am
Fragile Teddy wont last 5 plays behind that special Olympian oline… replacing a durable qb for a fragile bum with a history of missing seasons is just the kind of move desperate teams make to ensure failure….
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:34 am
Where did you find that 108 and 10.4 average per play for Winston? I see 7.1 and 7.7 over those years.
A lot of Jameis yardage stats are heavily affected by the true consistency of the team, Chris Godwin. His yards after catch was phenomenal.
I think the fast progression read of Bridgewater is more of an advantage than Jameis supposed long ball strength. The Bucs had way too many three and outs last season, though it was better than previous years.
That is not how you win games. Ball and clock control are better with a consistent renewal of downs. Jameis is worthless with that. His entire game is about forcing a big play.
I would much prefer being able to rely on a team that is capable of consistently marching down the field, with fireworks to keep the opposing defense honest. I think Bridgewater would do that better.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:38 am
Remember when the #1 criticism of Jameis Christ was he was badly inaccurate on the long ball?
How often have the Herculean efforts of arguably the best WR in the game today, and a top-10 WR, bailed out an inaccurate throw?
Has anyone accused Brees of not being able to throw the ball deep, based on one stat?
……..
One concern I have with ATM is team chemistry. We saw the D gel last season into a potential top-tier unit. How will that cohesion stay strong if ATM starts throwing picks and pick-6’s again, as he’s done his entire career?
How many core Buc players truly trust Winston to perform as he has NEVER performed in his entire career: few picks, few fumbles, and few dumb-ass plays?
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:38 am
Leon,
Remember when Roger Clemons left the Red Sox for the Blue Jays?
Anything is possible in sports free agency.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:40 am
Coach has Mr Pick-6 throw deep because those interceptions are less likely to be returned for touchdowns. I’ll take Bridgewater and W’s over Mr Pick-6 who can’t complete a 6 yard pass without it being a pick-6. In BA I trust. Whoever he chooses, I will root for his success.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:42 am
@Craig: excellent points.
An inconsistent running game the QB has to produce one with quick reads and shorter passes to move the sticks.
The Bucs were exciting because Winston would throw 20 yards on 3rd and 3. But those passes are not the high % needed to move the chains consistently. And with teams knowing Winston likes the longer ball, that leaves a lot of room underneath.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:42 am
Who is the best QB this team has EVER had? I will wait….
Ask Mike Evan’s who helped him get 6 straight 1,000 yard seasons.
Ask Chris Godwin who threw him to 1,000 yards his first season as a starter.
But any QB could have done that huh?
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:46 am
Jameis #1…your screen name says it all. You wear FSU/Winston blinders.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:48 am
Bridgewater wins games.
JW wins less than 50% of games.
WHile I understand he isn’t the sole cause expecting JW to change is lunacy. Keep him and get the same results. Break Joe’s heart and free the man to torture another fan base. He can’t win here.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:50 am
Well Eric did you have season tickets before Jameis? Glennon and McCown? I don’t think you had season tix to begin with.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:53 am
Winston wasn’t a good deep ball thrower before this year. Quit acting like he’s been anything other than mediocre at that before Arians’ staff got here.
Can Bridgewater go through progressions, read a defense, and complete short passes that move the chains? If he can do that then he’s a better option than Winston.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:56 am
Jameis was drafted to the sorriest team in the league.
Dumbest fan base ever.
Multiple head coaches and offensive coordinators.
Swiss cheese for a defense “You like that”.
XFL caliber RBs
Expensive but overrated offensive line.
ZERO kicking help.
and a weak GM who loves to pick against the grain….
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:58 am
Can Bridgewater go through progressions, read a defense, and complete short passes that move the chains? If he can do that then he’s a better option than Winston.
^^^Absolutely he can, but ME13 isn’t a fakin possession receiver and neither is Godwin. BA doesn’t coach west coast. So you’ll have an ok defense reader at QB that can’t scare defenses, you’ll have under utilized WR’s (one of them a future Hall of Famer) and a coach that can’t implement his full offense.
Yeah let’s go with Bridgewater LMAO
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:59 am
America’s Turnover Machine will be shown the door in free agency. Accountability for poor decision making is a must. Blaming everyone but the ATM is irresponsible and you will receive reality in two short weeks.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:59 am
Again, this is from a reporter(Peter King) that has a history of telling substantial lies in his reporting. At one time he wrote a story saying Ray Rice’s wife(Janay Rice) said she told Rodger Goodell the video of Ray Rice hitting her was a one time occurrence. None of what Peter King wrote was true, but he ran with the story anyway, because he makes things up.
Here is another lie from Peter King:
Source NY Post:
King cited sources as saying “either 11 or 12” of the Patriots’ footballs during their 45-7 AFC Championship win over the Colts in 2015 were at least two pounds under the league’s prescribed pressure level. King was proven incorrect four months later, when the Wells Report, which determined it was “more probable than not” New England had purposefully altered the footballs against league rules, stated that just one of the 22 measurements taken on the 11 Patriots footballs showed two PSI under the permissible limit.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:00 am
gotbbucs….Kotter also had a top 5 offense with Jamie’s as QB. This didn’t start with Arians.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:01 am
Diggler,
It’s all about playoffs. Individual production means jack: see Jameis and his turnovers. They nullify all the good bc he literally turned it over more than he scored TDs last year.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:02 am
sign brady…
if not, sign kappernick for 6 mil and lets roll…
either way, we’re the media darlings of the league
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:02 am
How many playoffs has Jameis made? Why can’t he stop
Turning it over?
What team would sign him as a starter?
Asking for a friend. 😀
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:03 am
Jameis is staying…this is media mind tricks to not tip hand at off season moves…
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:05 am
This is like being waterboarded ….
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:06 am
Only reason Bridgewater’s played well against bucs this past season is they had 2 year old film. Teddy choked in playoffs not a dominate scoring machine. If teddy is the guy we can lose hope if we ever get down in games. Jameis does enough to keep me entertained. Just rack up more w’s and this convo is irrelevant.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:08 am
dont remember teddy ever having studs at WR like ME13 and CG12…..
you can only execute the offense you’re playing in…..lol….
the offense that teddy played in wasnt a “deep ball” offense….lol…
the funny thing is, joe and others act as if JW has been hitting the “deep ball” since 2015….lol….JW just started connecting with the deep ball in 2019!!!!!…lol…
BTW: was brad johnson good at throwing, “the deep ball”?…and did grudens offense ask BJ to throw the “deep ball”?
GO BUCS!!!!!
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:11 am
Teddy had weapons…and he also had adrian peterson and Alvin Kamara. We had peyton barber and ronald jones lol…debate over.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:13 am
Brad johnson had a running game tho and mcardell and jurevicious and keyshawn was a stable of 1″s and 2’s…debate over. And brad johnson was a check down Charlie. Lol
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:15 am
Remember Doug martin ripping the eagles azz up…easiest victory for jameis..get him a run game and we can elevate.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:15 am
When you ask a 22 year old Heisman winning QB to put a team on his back and win without a defense or kicker or running backs, in a passing offense, picks are gonna happen. No risk it No biscut right? Exactly…Jameis is fearless in the pocket and will risk it all…defense just now getting BETTER after 5 years of nothing that resembled help.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:20 am
When you ask the #2 overall pick to be a game changer? That is the reason he was drafted #1 overall to be the man. Not have excuses after excuses he was picked to go out and lead his team to the playoffs…jameis just isnt that good as a starting qb; time for dalton or bridgewater or the next chapter in bucs life
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:21 am
Teddy will do great in BA’s offense. The receivers won’t be under utilized. He doesn’t throw the long ball a ton but he hasn’t had to. He was a winner in Minnesota and he was perfect last season filling in for NO.
Bruce wouldn’t be interested if Teddy couldn’t do what he needed him to. At Louisville, he kept getting better. His last season he threw for 70% completion rate 31TDs and 4 Int’s. I think this would be a great move.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:23 am
Did NDog change his call sign??
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:24 am
Name 1 QB who took a team the playoffs by himself ???
Wanna know why you can’t? Because it’s a TEAM sport dummy. Asked him to be the man??? He did as the best statistical QB this sorry ass franchise EVER had. Period
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:24 am
Tired of 5 years of losing games? Get another QB!
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:25 am
The saints are such a good team that you could have put in most backups and the odds are they would of won.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:25 am
In 5 games last year 68% completion, 1384 yards, 9 TDs and 2 Int’s.
For a season that would have been 4428 yards 29 TD’s and 6 Int’s. I can live with those numbers!!

March 3rd, 2020 at 9:29 am
Deep ball or not, Teddy Bridgewater is a better and smarter QB than Jay-Miss. The fact that the Bucs haven’t secured Jay-Miss to a long term deal already proves that he’s a bust. If he wasn’t a bust he would have been extended last year.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:29 am
Tom Brady was drafted to the Patriots
Much like Kobe was drafted to the Lakers…WINNERS!
Winston was drafted to the Yucks
Much like Allen Iverson was drafted to the 76ers…LOSERS
How many championships would Kobe have had playing for the 76ers???
The same amount Allen Iverson has…NONE
It’s a team sport, not one man can win alone…
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:30 am
We had the 7th highest paid offense in the league last year. The offense has been built to make the QB look good. Ronald Jones is coming along. Touch up the offensive line and I think we will be good to go.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:31 am
Winstunned defenders are delusional they think this team is the 0-16 browns but Jameis Winston is such a generational QB he personally wills this team to every minuscule win it gets.

All i know is that Teddy throws an accurate tight spiral.

you just made my point…..BJ didnt have to have 5k throwing yards and 30 TDs….he had a run game, 2 stud WRs and a defense….
mr check down charlie won a SB…..and it wasnt because he was “mr. excitement” or threw for 5k yards…..it was because he played within the offense, took what the defense gave him and didnt turn the ball over 30+ times….

So ME13 and Godwin would be 1,000 yard receivers no matter who throws them the ball right? LMAO
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:35 am
ANYBODY but JayMiss.
ANYBODY
Peace, out
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:35 am
Like I said in an earlier post…CAPTAIN CHECKDOWN!!!! NO NO NO NO to Bridgewater in Tampa, He just doesn’t fit in BA’s offense and it would mean a offense ranked in the 20’s, 14 -17 points a game and a losing record when the Super Bowl is in Tampa and we want to be the 1st team to play the super bowl in our own stadium.
I think the Glazers Boys are all in for this year wanting the super bowl and Teddy just wouldn’t be able to accomplish that. I say all in on the GOAT Brady and if he goes someplace else then Jameis.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:36 am
They would have been with Fitzpatrick throwing the ball in 2018…..

“So Tom Brady would get to the playoffs with no RBs no Kicker and a defense that allows 30 point per game right? LMAO”
#1. I believe that they will upgrade the RB position this offseason
#2. Brady had 4 different kickers last year in New England and still made the playoffs. Not only that but Gay was connecting at about a 80+% click until the last game in which he missed 3.
#3. Our defense was ranked about 31st for the 1st 8 games last year and I agree allowing 30+ point a game but over the final 8 games got better and better rising to 15th in the league at the end of the season.
With a top 15 defense, Evans, Godwin, an improved RB position and a 3rd wildcard position with Brady would lead to a playoff position and once in the tournament anything can happen.

—————————————-
I don’t believe he could have in 2019. But when you consider the Defense is trending upwards, and we could very well address the running game in the draft/free agency, and bring in another kicker for competition, in 2020 he easily could with this team. I’m not saying he will end up here, I don’t think he will, but if we address the weaknesses of the team this off season, there is no doubt the GOAT could take this team to the playoffs.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:49 am
Brady wasn’t even BRADY last season. You can see the age in his play. The Patriots were being carried by there defense in 2019.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:50 am
Alvin Kamara 2019
171 rushes 797 yds 4.7 ave
81 rec 533 yds. 6.6 yds/rec
6 td’s 4 fumbles
Ronald Jones 2019
172 rushes. 724 yds. 4.2 ave
31 rec 309 yds. 10.0 yds/rec
6 td’s 3 fumbles
Ronald Jones, if anything , was under utilized last year, probably because of pass rush pickup issues.
Bucs need upgrade on OLine and RB, but Jones can play
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:51 am
If the weaknesses of the the team are addressed, we can also win with Jameis…who statistically outplayed Brady in 2019
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:52 am
@Jameis #1 Fan
If you are a Jameis fan and want him back I agree with you in that I think Jameis can win here and should be back.
But if BA wants to go another direction the only one out there I would exchange for Jameis is the GOAT. Rivers, Captain Checkdown Teddy, Dalton, Foles and Carr just are not upgrades over Jameis.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:52 am
I lived in Massachusetts in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000. I can tell you that Tom Brady was not drafted to a winner. The Patriots drafted Brady in 2000 and they were not a good team. The Pats started the 2001 season on a bad note and then Bledsoe, the guy with the “big arm” and experience, got injured. The rest is history. Even back then, Brady wasn’t the Tom Brady we know today. He was an average game manager in 2001.

======================
They sure did, and the irony is that in the half of the season as the defense got better, JW got worse. He threw 18 of his 30 picks in the final 8 games. There is a video on YT that breaks down all his picks this season and tabulates blame. Of those 18, he was directly to blame for 13 of them, that’s unacceptable. It’s the “Jameis Winston Conundrum” by “SetTheEdge”. It’s an excellent video done by a guy who knows what he’s talking about.
The claim from his fans is that he doesn’t have a good defense/running game/etc, but when those elements played better, he started playing worse. They may have went 5-3 during that window, not because JW played lights out, but because the rest of the team mostly played better in spite of him.

Difference is…. Jameis got the offense in the top 5
That’s something that McCoy Hargreaves and Vea have never done..YET

The last 1/2 of the season Jameis was playing with a knee injury, broken thumb on his passing hand and 1/2 blind because he is nearsighted. I am also nearsighted and I can’t see how he was able to play as well as he did, I’m sure he sees the field and its pretty much blurred to him but with lasik surgery this offseason the field will open up for him and his accuracy will improve greatly

This game is all about momentum and every interception Winston threw was like getting kicked in the balls. How many of those can you take or want to take. Every pick six is like getting castrated. I hope it’s game over for Winston in Tampa, I can’t watch him anymore. Maybe a change of scenery is best for all. Wherever Winston lands I hope he does well.
March 3rd, 2020 at 10:10 am

Let’s not use the vision issue as a crutch of the last half season. He’s had that problem since before he ever even entered the league. If his vision really was bad enough that it caused him to be less accurate, whats the excuse for him waiting till now to have LASIK? Sure, the recommended age is 25, but it’s not a law. The only law is that if you are under 18, you have to have parental sign-off. My sister-in-law performs 100’s of LASIK operations a year and has dozens of people under 25 go through it.
I’ll give ya the injuries, but playing as long as he did with less than perfect vision is inexcusable. Players are routinely required to undergo physicals, if he was “half blind”, he would have never been allowed to play.

@Jameis #1 Fan
You honestly don’t think Evans and Godwin are 1000 yard receivers without Winston?
Evans was a 1k yard receiver with Josh McCown throwing to him. Godwin caught every wobbly pass Winston threw to him last year.
I can understand and appreciate fans that want Winston if they come to the table with true stats and thought out arguments. Calling yourself “Jameis #1 Fan” pretty much takes all credibility away from you and let’s everyone else know that you’re a troll.
Anyway, carry on with your nonsensical one line weak arguments. Not one of you guys can explain why the majority of Winston’s interceptions were on underneath and short sideline routes and had nothing to do with an “aggresive/downfield” scheme. Winston was throwing picks on first read options in the short game, teach me how that is anything other than just a basic non understanding of coverages and spacing.
I look forward to your one or two sentence retort with zero evidence and will likely end with an insult, or you can just leave it alone and accept the obvious, Winston is a dime a dozen buffoon who has never had to earn his position on a team and therefore has no appreciation for repercussions when he does something wrong.

Bridgewater > Winston
March 3rd, 2020 at 11:00 am
Against the Bucs this past season, Bridgewater averaged 10.6 yards per attempt. Just sayin’
March 3rd, 2020 at 11:05 am
Dink and dunk sounds pretty good to me. With the receivers we have and a very big and fast Howard. A lot of quick slants and timing throws tho those guys seems like it would move the chains pretty consistently. Who could stop mike Evans on a slant besides jameis and a horribly placed football on the first drive of game 4 different times.

You’re right, those ints are inexcusable but he threw them because he was in year one of the system. just like manning and palmer did. They learned and they improved. Not to mention all the other REASONS you guys consider excuses.
I just don’t understand everyone’s logic that we want to get bridgewater when we would essentially have to implement a new scheme and give him a year to learn it along with everyone else. Brady will throw ints in this system in year one too. Rivers is going to the Colts most likely. Every other qb is going to struggle in year one of bruce’s system. So we better be prepared for that if jameis leaves. Jameis in year 2 > everyone else in year one. I would bet a lot on that.
I could see a qb come in here and ball out in year two and then everyone would be like “see it was jameis, blank did so well”. After the defense and run game improves. Or have winning season because of the supporting cast and average stats but still hype up the new guy. SIGH
I sincerely think this team will be successful next season regardless of who is at qb but jameis is just the best option. I still be he’ll be back and there are going to be a lot of temper tantrums until the Ws come and then people will mutter under their breath but it will be all good cuz we’re winning.
March 3rd, 2020 at 11:09 am
Teddy was never asked to throw the ball downfield; different coaches, different schemes.
I find it laughable that people are more worried about “dink and dunk” offenses than actually WINNING football games!

Now that is funny, since up until last year people tried to use those stats against him. Suddenly, stats don’t count.

An obvious benefit of a more conservative dink/dunk offense is clock control. Arians said he likes to get off the field in as few plays as quick as possible, which is a flawed terrible way of looking at the game. The clock and turnovers are 2 of the biggest reasons a team wins. Being so aggressive only results giving the opponent more time on offense AND it further exhausts our defensive players which leads to more injuries. I’d take dink & dunk ANY DAY of the week over a super aggressive playstyle.

teddy Bridgewater 6 years NFL Stat
44 games, 65.2% comp, 7652 yds, 38 TD, 25 Int, 10 Fumbles lost = 35 Turnover
J Winston 5 years NFL Stat
72 games, 61.3% comp, 19737 yds, 121 TD, 88 int, 31 fumbles lost = 119 turnover

BA once got fired from the Steelers for getting his QB Big Ben hit too much and calling plays that required Big Ben to hold the ball longer. That folks was about 14 years ago and my point is a long ball vertical offense requires QB to hold the longer the most.
BA at age what 67-68 is going to change HIS offense?
No he won’t!

“Fragile Teddy wont last…”
This!
I hate to agree with our resident troll, but one knock on Bridgewater is that he is too fragile to be a starter full time. Vikings gave up on him because he was never available due to injury. That only gets worse as he ages.
And the one time he did last a full season (1 time in 5 years), he had 8 fumbles, 3,231 yards and only 14 touchdowns.
He sucks, people.

I find it laughable you think we could win with the defense, ol, kicker, and run game we’ve had the majority of the past 5 years with a dink and dunk offense.
If we weren’t a heavy passing offense last season, we would have been 3-13.

March 3rd, 2020 at 11:30 am
It’s laughable how people think only Winston can throw the ball in this offense, yet Arians is more than willing to have Gabbert as the backup. I don’t think Gabbert is known for his amazing arm. There’s more to this offense than 60 yard passes. It’s stupid to think otherwise.
March 3rd, 2020 at 11:38 am
Buccernutter- How would we know? “Dink and dunk” won us a Super Bowl with an “offensive-minded” coach.
I’m not saying it’s the answer. Nobody knows! It’s just funny that people are willing to give away their season tickets in lieu of even entertaining the thought of a different offense.
And, I’ll add this: If you watched the games in the latter part of the season, you could see the defensive improvement. Couple that with an OL that protected a 5,000 yard passer and an “improved” (not great!) kicker, why couldn’t it work?
In order for the Bucs to be competitive, they MUST run the ball more. This means LESS Jameis and less passing.
March 3rd, 2020 at 11:39 am
Oh please no!
Bridgewater has no arm.
Only game he threw more than 1 touchdown was when playing against our terrible defense in the beginning of the season.
You guys want a QB who only throws 16 TDs the whole season? JFC

He had adrian peterson/mat asiata/kyle rudolpj/mike Wallace/Stephen Diggs and laquon treadwell…that’s not a slump line up…historically always had better defensive teams than Jameis

@Jameis #1 fan . I just want to let you know that Kobe Bryant was drafted by the hornets and traded for Vlade Divac.
March 3rd, 2020 at 11:47 am
@Matthew Fifer
Jameis waited until now because there is risk with the lasik procedure. I have a Uncle who had it done and it didn’t turn out well as he had double vision on one side for the rest of his life. As a pro athlete I don’t blame him for taking the doctors advice and waiting until he’s 26.
While I agree he has had this issue since college are you saying his eyes today are the same as they were in college or even in 2017?? I know and I sure you know that our eyes just as our bodies, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. are constantly changing you may be 20-90 in 2018 but your eyes could change to 20-120 in 2019. I’m not saying this happened but it is possible and we also have to remember that in the last 2 games Jameis played with a bum knee, broken thumb, no Evans, Godwin or Scotty Miller. While Perriman and Watson played well the timing was not the same as it was with Evans & Godwin.

dink and dunk won us a superbowl with a top 5 defense of all time HAHA come on man. I actually stated that before, it could work. I the team succeeding with a new qb that is average but ol, run game, and defense improves in year 2 and everyone blaming jameis, which would be ridiculous. Jameis was 6-2 with improvement in that area. I think most qbs will succeed with the improvement of the overall team but I, and many other people, share the opinion that jameis is the best option for the job. Like i said year 2 jameis is better than year 1 of anyone. We’ll see, I cheer for the bucs but I think it will be a mistake letting him go.

March 3rd, 2020 at 11:58 am
Buccernutter- If the Bucs cannot find a suitable replacement, I am all for retaining Jameis short-term. The issue that I have primarily is that can we really trust Jameis in those pressure situations. This is a stand-alone argument. In OT with the ball in his hands, can he take us to victory? Not taking defense, run-game, or kicking into consideration. Is he THAT guy?
So far, I would say no. But, I would not want to “settle” for lesser talent either. We KNOW what we have in Jameis.

To be honest all great players in this league gets an over powered version of themselves on madden. Jameis and bridgewater both have standard players on ultimate team they suck unfortunately. I’m just here to state my opinion. But I’m not going to throw a bunch of stats at you to make a point. At 27 Jameis can st8 up ball with the best of them as proven when he beat the Rams ass 55 – 40 and putting up 4 TDs 1interception….you can act like you didn’t see that if you want…but the was “The Rams” …..my boy can ball. The offense is a first year offense for Winston and it’s nick name is no risk it no biscuit…Period. Jameis is a worrior, play hurt do his best. He will risk it all to win. Also takes responsibility for everything he has to get better at. If you think an old statue of a QB like Rivers can out Ball Jameis on game day? You out ur mind….Brady wasn’t “Brady” last year and neither was Rivers…yall hang on to names…I’m just gone take Jameis at 27 years old before I take Brady at 42….if you dont like it???

I’m from Miami, and I love Teddy. Watched him play his entire high school career. He played for the rival team, and gave my alma mater hell. I liked JW at FSU, and I’m a Canes fan. But when it comes to the Bucs, I choose JW anyday.
The guy played for 3 head coaches in 5 seasons, and this was his first with BA. But he’s ready to throw JW away. If I were Winston, I’d say F the Bucs, and prove himself elsewhere, just like Tannehill did in Tennessee.
All these football experts commenting, but NOBODY has the answer to who the best option is to replace JW, and guarantee a playoff appearance.

March 3rd, 2020 at 4:48 pm
Teddy is a safe passer and that’s fine; however you have to tailor the offense and team to fit Teddy’s skillset. The Bucs won their lone super bowl with a game manager, but that team had a great defense and damn good run game. We don’t know if the defense is good-great or just had a hot streak(That was the case in 2016). The other issue is the run game is inept. They are also devoid of a pass catching threat out the backfield. Kamara isn’t a bell cow back, but being a threat out of the backfield makes a QB life easier.
Keep in mind Evan’s and Godwin aren’t guys who separate like AB or Odell. Evans and Godwin are 50/50 receivers who make contested catches. They work with a QB who is willing to throw those passes. That’s one reason Dez Bryant had a better connection with Romo than Dak. Romo would throw those passes, but Dak wouldn’t. While I’m up, Tampa isn’t the only team with two good receivers. IMO is isn’t about Teddy’s lack of arm strength. It is the scheme. 5 and 7 step drop s and long developing plays where the QB will take punishment. Arians will not change his scheme to fit the QB. IMO Teddy is already being setup for failure if that’s the case. I’m interested in how this turns out.
March 3rd, 2020 at 5:27 pm
Everyine on here is blaming windton for not taki gor making the short plays to eat up the clock when he isnt the one calling the plays.
Lertwich anyone? This reminds me.of.whem some.of you thought Mike Smith was a good DC and had nothing to do with the horrid defense every week

At least Teddy is accurate. But there will be another surprise vet available, especially if the idiots in TN make a play for Brady.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:01 pm
BA always seemed to be able to put together high scoring offenses of the years. Why it took so long for him to get a HC gig was because his offense exposed QB’s to hits with slow developing plays. Even got fired by the Steelers for not adjusting his offense so Big Ben would not get hit so much, and Andrew Luck took such a beating he retired at an age considered to still be young. So go ahead keep dreaming Teddy is going to the answer to running Winston out of town he will not last a season in this offense.
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:18 pm
tmaxcon Says:
Fragile Teddy wont last 5 plays behind that special Olympian oline… replacing a durable qb for a fragile bum with a history of missing seasons is just the kind of move desperate teams make to ensure failure….
ROFL, dude that was mean as all hell, but I’m crying from laughter. There is a special place (hint, it’s hot) waiting for you when you leave this world and I’ll be joining you since I laughed like an idiot at this remark. 😜
March 3rd, 2020 at 8:23 pm
Let’s see how accurate Teddy would be w/ an OL that allowed 47sacks & 109 additional hits over 670+ drop back attempts.
If anyone has taken the time to review all 30 of JW3’s 2019 picks…You would understand that 5 were tips/deflections off WR/RB hands – 6 were from WR-RB’s slipping/falling/quit on routes…and another 5 were when he was getting blasted in the pocket. That’s 16 of 30.
Now, he legit got sucked by multiple MLB’s over the middle & had another handful of CB’s sucker him & undercut WR’s on wide side outs..(which has to be cleaned up)… But that doesn’t mean he needs to walk in FA or isn’t capable of playing “Winning FB” in TB.
1 play a game, is all JW3 needs to fix….Just 1 play a game.
10 INT improvement = Bucs are in the Play-offs & JW3 regains fan support!
15 INT improvement = Bucs are serious SB contenders & flip the script on a decade of depression. JW3 will be a Pro-Bowler / All-Pro candidate.
That’s why BA said “he knows he can win with Jameis”…But, it’s a Business decision at this point.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:05 pm
@Newbuc
This area and Florida’s football knowledge is only rivaled by Texas and California.
Dabo and Saban covet Florida’s 5 star recruits. Those recruits from football juggernauts like Armwood from Tampa or the Deadnaughts from Lakeland learned football here.
I don’t ever remember Saban, Dabo, or Urban saying anything other than praise about the state of Florida’s Youth Football and Youth Coaches.
But maybe you know more about football than the greatest college football coach in Saban with 6 titles out of 9 championship games he’s coached in.
Or you are more knowledgeable than Urban’s 3 titles and Dabo’s two.
I mean Urban did Coach those stupid Gators to 2 National Titles.
March 3rd, 2020 at 9:11 pm
Resign the Defensive line, add a safety, RB and a real kicker then draft OT, OG and QB. Franchise tag Winston and call it a day. Don’t waste cap space or time on Teddy, Rivers, Carr or Brady. The door is closing on this team.
March 3rd, 2020 at 10:02 pm
If you want to compare Jameis to Teddy go to Week 5 Bucs-Saints on Game Pass.
JW had 4 potential INTs called back by penalties (one was a Bucs delay of game) and drops by Saints DBs… and 1 fumble recovered by OL. In one of JW’s cleanest games on the stat sheet he could have easily suffered another 5 TOs to add to his impressive season totals. Erratic at times, he hooked up with Godwin for 125 yards and 2 TDs when the Saints played prevent defense and fought through 6 sacks while running for his life once Saints started blitzing.
Teddy meanwhile had 1 INT off a bad throw behind his receiver that was deflected while otherwise racking up 314 yards and 4 TDs. Anyone thinking he can’t throw a deep ball should reconsider as he and Thomas combined for 182 yards on just 11 catches. He’ll be just fine in BA’s offense… and he looks a heck of a lot more mobile when avoiding the pass rush. Granted, RoJo is not Kamara but… count me in on Teddy.

Bridgwater.
LOL!
Anyone talking up Bridgewater is truly a dummy. If the Bucs wanted a dink and dunk game manger who was afraid to throw it downfield, they could just resign Mike Glennon on the cheap.
You have to be an idiot to want Bridgewater here and you clearly only watched him play that early season God-awful Bucs defense – because outside of that game, he was just a backup game manager level QB. If the Bucs had their 2002 defense, then sure, you can win with that, but the Bucs don’t have that 2002 defense.
March 4th, 2020 at 12:12 am
Looking at the air yard stats again…
Bridgewater was dead last in intended air yards, he was 2nd to last in completed air yards. Bridgewater also had .1 second (which is a lot) more time to throw compared to Winston, despite Bridgewater doing nothing but throwing underneath balls, while Winston was waiting for long plays to develop. This means Bridgewater had some top notch blocking. It also means that even with top notch blocking and having time for plays to develop, he was still dumping it off short.
Looking at the stats he’s actually worse than Derrick Carr when it comes to being afraid to throw the ball – and that’s saying something. Carr is a guy who threw the ball out of bounds on 4th and goal to end a game – he threw it out of bounds on purpose. Again, on 4th and goal, last play of the game. That is a cowardly QB, the only player I’ve seen do something similar was Mike Glennon who threw it out of bounds to end a game because he was so scared of being yelled at for turning it over and getting an INT on his stat sheet.
Bridgewater is not a legit option for this offense, it would make zero sense. Even preinjury he was not an arm guy – and if you’re going to run a deep ball offense, and throw it deep more than anyone in the game, you need a guy who is willing and able to throw the ball. Not a guy who will dump it off to a RB for 6 yards on 3rd and 13.
Also, speaking of intended air yards, Winston, by far, lead the league in intended air yards at 6,486 yards – the next was Dak at 5,539. That is a HUGE lead. Now Bridgewater only played the limited games, but prorated he’d have thrown for 3,400 yards. Again, showing that Bridgewater doesn’t throw anything but short balls.
