An assistant shares a story
Buccaneers quarterback coach Clyde Christensen was in a sharing mood yesterday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Joe enjoyed time with Christensen and posted a nugget earlier this morning, and Joe will have more later.
Christensen is a bit of a folk hero in Indianapolis after 14 seasons (2002-2015) coaching the Colts in various capacities with Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, and Bucco Bruce Arians for a stretch of time.
Asked about reuniting with Arians following three seasons with the Dolphins (some believe he had a huge hand in turning around Ryan Tannehill’s career), Christensen said he is having a blast.
Interestingly, he relayed a story of how Arians wants his foot on the Bucs’ gas pedal.
“He is fun to coach with. He’s aggressive,” Christensen said of Arians. “There are some funny stories. We’re at Jacksonville and, you know, we’re struggling with interceptions. We’re up 25-0, which didn’t happen a bunch this year. … We got like 90 yards to go in 35 seconds [in the first half]. I’m like, ‘Oh, good. Let’s just sit on this thing. We had a great first half.’ (Imitating Arians) ‘Hey, we gotta get another one right here. I’m gonna coach. Hey, that’s not how we do it around here.’
“Anything wrong with just going in [to the locker room], our quarterback’s feeling good. We’re having a good first half. Next thing you know we’re throwing it up for grabs and we’re throwing a Hail Mary from the 30 yard line. No one could get to the end zone from there and [we were] just asking them to pick one. So we have our moments, but he is really fun to work with.”
Fun story there, but it sure is noteworthy to hear Christensen say the Bucs were struggling with interceptions. For the record, Jameis Winston did not throw a pick in that 28-11 victory against Jacksonville.
Also for the record, the Bucs got the ball at their 34 yard line with 24 seconds remaining in that first half and a 25-0 lead. No knee was taken and Jameis threw a 22-yard completion to O.J. Howard on first down. The next four plays were passes, including three deep shots, one of which ended the half.
Hearing this from Christensen makes Joe wonder whether the few times the Bucs went turtle with their offense late in games was really a Byron Leftwich call and not Arians’.

We really need to stop the excuses, it is what it is and we are getting someone new under centre, not wasting another year blaming everything and everyone for the avalanche of interceptions and fumbles !

Please ask Clyde why, as QB Coach, he failed to cut back interceptions.

You can take some risks if your defense is strong enough to compensate for their failures……deep passes pose less risks…..
I agree with the aggressive approach but it seems to be applied on an inconsistent basis……we had several terrible second half meltdowns last year.

Taking risk… who knew a simple out on the 1st play of games was risky? I guess any throw is risky when you stare at the reciever for 5 minutes before throwing.

Even in an offense that didnt demand risk he still threw double digit picks so once a coach demands risk he throws 30 of em. I’m taking the over on 20 picks next year. They way Winston throws the ball to the other team going turtle was doing him a favor.
What your saying is winston is no Andrew Luck who came in as a rookie in this offense and went 11-5 throwing 18 picks with the 21st ranked defense and Vick Ballard, Donald Brown in the backfield lol. Defense is responsible for our one winning season with Winston and I 100% understand why they wont commit to him yet

At this point it is just muscle memory when it some to Jameis. Int’s, uber and eating W’s. He does have a terrible reputation outside of the bay area.

You guys sure have a lot of confidence in an unproven washed up has been that never was that has zero post season success…. Lovie 2.0 will set this franchise back decades with short term win / now moves that will backfire and will not translate to wins. it’s the Buccaneers way after all. you dont earn the title of leagues worst franchise moniker by making good decsions. BA is that cocky smart arse 80s used car salesmen that talks a good game yet accomplished nothing on his own.

Reading these comments I see the folks don’t get it. Arians built the risk into his system and Jameis will just run the plays called. Listen to the Linebackers who was catching the interceptions. They knew the pass was coming because the offense was predictable. If they had to get 1 yard to extend the play the running game couldn’t do it. Keep blaming the QB instead of trying to take some of the risk out the system.

Since we’re still talking about Jameis, I just wanted to reiterate some thoughts from a previous post. BA is in a win now mode. Knowing there would be a steep learning curve and wanting to get past that as quickly as possible, he gave the team a crash course. Yes, pun intended! First thing was to tell Winston to sling it deep and don’t worry about the consequences. This accomplished several things.
1.Jameis was allowed to practice throwing the deep ball without fear of reprisal. 2. This allowed us to score a lot of points and be somewhat competitive during this learning year.
3. The inevitable turnovers that went along with this strategy put our defense in one bad situation after another. This speeded up their learning curve exponentially ie: sink or swim. ( VH3 sank )
4. There will be a lot of tape to study this offseason.
5. This year will be all about reigning Jameis in, using his progressions, checkdowns and setting up the deep ball.
BA is not stupid. He knew this year would be a train wreck but wanted his team to learn as quickly as possible. With our defense, the only way to be halfway competitive was to score a ton of points. BA’s strategy this year was the only way to accomplish all of these goals.
Having said all of this, I would still rather have Carr!

The problem with Jameis games is that there is no such thing as nursing a lead.
Being 25 points up is not a guaranteed thing. Jameis can give away a lot more than that, and has.
How do you nurse a lead when more than half of your QB’s interceptions happened on “safe plays”?

Yeah we should drop Jameis now and start looking for someone better. It only took the Bucs 39 years to find someone this good. I’m sure by 2059 we can find a better Qb.
Maybe we can get Tom Brady 🥰 We can sell out the stadium with everyone wearing his jersey to watch him get carted off the field and retire after two weeks. It will be like when we had the once great Tim Brown at WR. They’ll be true buccaneers for life.

I like WINNERS not optimists that lower the bar and accept failure so they can say they are positive. Reality is a beotch dude and our team has not done anything positive in nearly two decades unless you lower the bar
