Joe Barry Leaving Bucs (Not For Tennessee)
January 26th, 2010Multiple reports today say Bucs linebackers coach Joe Barry will be allowed out of his contract with the Bucs (which had one year remaining) and be allowed to coach in college.
But Barry will not be going to Tennessee as first reported last week. Instead, he will join Monte Kiffin, Lane Kiffin (and his scorching hot wife Layla) and be the linebackers coach at USC.
Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune has the details.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers have decided to let linebackers coach Joe Barry out of his contract so that Barry can become the linebackers coach under Lane Kiffin at Southern Cal.
… The Bucs will replace Barry, who was under contract through the 2010 season, by moving former defensive backs coach Bill Baker into that role. Baker will be replaced as defensive backs coach by Jimmy Lake, another former assistant with the Buccaneers.
Barry graduated from USC where he also played linebacker.
Taking over for Barry as the hands-on mentor to Quincy Black, Geno Hayes and the other LBs is Princeton graduate Joe Baker, a Jim Bates guy who coached linebackers for the defrocked defensive coordinator in Denver and supervised the Bucs’ defensive backs last year.
Joe’s heard all sorts of rave reviews about Joe Barry over the years. But for whatever reason, Mark Dominik and Raheem The Dream released him from his contract, which likely was a two-year deal signed when he came to the Bucs after captaining the horrendous, winless 2008 Lions defense.
Joe’s not crying about this. Maybe the Princeton guy, a veteran of the NFL, is better than Barry. And maybe — maybe — this had nothing to do with cutting payroll.
