Shaq Barrett: I Don’t Want The Franchise Tag; “Tune In Next Year”
February 23rd, 2020The Bucs won’t have a happy pass rusher on their hands if they slap the franchise tag on Shaq Barrett coming off a 19 1/2-sack season.
The tag, which the Bucs could offer linebacker Shaq beginning on Thursday, would represent a salary for him of about $17 million in 2020. But Shaq wants no part of that, he told CBS Sports Radio.
The transition tag “is cool,” however, Shaq said, because it would allow him to test the market and give the Bucs a chance to match any offer. And Shaq reiterated what that he definitely wants to stay in Tampa.
Shaq also was asked to respond to those who say he’s a one-year wonder.
“Tune in next year. I don’t know if it’s 19 1/2 [sacks] but it’s going to be a better overall season,” Shaq said, emphasizing that he’ll be better in “the run game, pass game [and in] pass coverage.”
Full disclosure: Shaq’s comments came during Super Bowl week in an interview Joe finally just got to. Joe heard many other Shaq interviews and this is the first time Joe heard Shaq address the franchise tag.
As for Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, Shaq offered his typical assessment of the five-year veteran during this chat, noting he believes in Jameis and is impressed by his attitude and desire.
“He threw us out of a lot of games,” Shaq said, but Jameis “kept us in games” and certainly will address his weaknesses.
At the close of the interview, Shaq laughed and said, “Show me the money.”
February 23rd, 2020 at 10:44 am
Question…if you transition tag him and he goes somewhere else are we compensated with picks? Or am I confusing that with someone else?
If we did get compensated well for it then I would sign JPP and use the extra draft capital for Online and Dline…but maybe I’m mixing this up with something else. He’s good but you have to have enough money to go across the board and have a balanced team.
JPP is just as good and costs less money to keep. Such needs to stay, lots of guys to re-sign. What kind of cap do you put on paying a guy like Shaq?
February 23rd, 2020 at 10:44 am
Shaq and VV need some young playmates in the draft as do the OL side…squeak another cap friendly deal out of Jamyth so we can put that story to bed one way or the other after this season….set the trenches for 2021 and beyond….FA pickings for RB-WR-Safety
February 23rd, 2020 at 10:47 am
He threw us out of a lot of games,” Shaq said, but Jameis “kept us in games” and certainly will address his weaknesses.
You could say that’s a summation of Jameis’ entire NFL career.
A $30 million QB doesn’t blow 3-4 games per year, even if he “kept us in games” with his Entertaining Talent.
I just don’t see ANY team offering Jameis more than $20 million.
February 23rd, 2020 at 10:48 am
Defense is the priority, addressing everyone’s needs/wants isn’t likely. That’s why it’s called a negotiation.
Keep them all.

Pay this man now!
February 23rd, 2020 at 11:01 am
I hate to say it, but Bucs been reward mediocrity ever since old man passed. I can’t remember the last season ownership, GMs, coaches, players held each other accountable. We know it happens we witnessed it 20 odd years ago. Some how we can’t even get close to that? With a franchise QB of 5 years? If Jameis gets the bag and Shaq gets the transition or franchise tag. Consider all respect lost for these guys. We reward a GM who our own team is scared of repping his and his pretty boy QB W-L record. At the end of the day that’s what it comes down to. Real Bucs fans don’t have time to sit here and pretend anymore, we need results. Sign players that impact our W-L record in a good way and if you effecting it in a bad way gtfoh. Hold men accountable for their paychecks. Or, pay boys and let them play themselves out the league.

Looks like Leonard Williams wants to play for Bowles again. I would let Suh walk and spend some of that Glazer loot on a younger guy who had his BEST season under our DC. Pay Barrett and I would either pay JPP or get another younger pass rusher. the BIGGEST question is still the QB spot. but we must keep the D line together, or upgrade to get to the playoffs.
February 23rd, 2020 at 11:35 am
Teams are only going to get one tag, and must choose between Franchise and Transitional.
It’s the way the new CBA works…and it will take affect shortly.
If I were making the choices at One Buc, I would re-sign Shaq to a long term deal for around 16-17 per year.
I would Transition Tag Winston…giving him a chance to test the market, and giving us two extra first rounders if someone signs him.
Saying Jameis is not worth more than $20 million per year is lying to yourself. $27 million per year is the low end, $35m it the high end. $30 million would be acceptable, so long as a chunk of it is incentives. Say, $22 million per year plus $8m in incentives. That paints a $30m number on the contract, giving respect, but also gives the Bucs a discount if he does not come through.
Say, for example, he gets an extra $500,000 per game without a turnover. That is a huge incentive.
February 23rd, 2020 at 11:40 am
Jamoist will continue to throw us out of games as long as ownership allows Licht to continue his ineptitude. The only way we’ll return to glory is if both of them are gone for good. Unfortunately it might take another wasted 2020 season to get there. Can you smell the pick sixes that the turnover machine is cooking??? #NoPlayoffs

It’s not like the free agent options are going to be better.
• “Winston hasn’t done it in 5 years”
• Bridgewater hasn’t done it in 5 years
• Carr hasn’t done it in 6 years
• Dalton hasn’t done it in 9 years
• Stafford not available
• Brady not really available
• Brees not available
• Ryan Tannehill not available

Bonzai … “If I were making the choices at One Buc, I would re-sign Shaq to a long term deal for around 16-17 per year.” So would I … for 4-5 years should do it. However, any player who ends his interview with “Show me the money” may be looking for a lot more than that.
And BTW Bonzai, read several articles that insinuate the new CBA may not be a done deal as you contend. Quite a few big name players seem to have an issue with going to 17 games. Can’t say as I blame them.
BucEmUp … If I understand the transition tag correctly, we WON’T get compensated if Shaq signed a contract elsewhere and we didn’t match it. Problem with either tag though is that it’s only for 1 year. When a guy shows the talent that Shaq has shown, you lock him up with a long-term deal.
February 23rd, 2020 at 11:46 am
Love how Shaq keeps it real with Jameis
February 23rd, 2020 at 11:54 am
Pay the man, he produced. If you franchise him not only do you piss him off you’d have to pay more down the road. The new CBA salaries will go up, not down, lock him up now.
February 23rd, 2020 at 11:54 am
Defense Rules, Shaq already said he would take a lower salary to stay, so they might even get away with $15m per year.
So far as the CBA, if the 17th game is the only issue (and it’s not really a 17th game…it would be a playoff game), they’ll get past it.
The thing about the CBA I don’t like is they are reducing padded practices again. I hate that.
One thing I have heard no word of is the teams getting to designate one player to not count against the cap. If I were the players, I would insist on that, because it frees more money up for them. Teams would be able to have their QBs without sacrificing hte rest of the team.
But I haven’t heard or read anything about it for weeks now.
February 23rd, 2020 at 11:56 am
Bonzai … “Carr hasn’t done it in 6 years”. Unfair Bonzai. We both know that getting to the playoffs takes a TEAM, not JUST a QB. Oakland as a TEAM has stunk for the past 6 years (OK, 1 winning season … and they did at least make the playoffs that one season). To his credit though, Carr was selected to the Pro Bowl 3 times in those 6 years (2015, 2016 & 2017). IOW, he’s a solid QB.
Wonder if he said that ‘he be ballin’ in those 3 years? Or if he’s insisting on $30 mil a year minimum salary? He did BTW trail Jameis by 12 passing TDs last year. Of course he also threw 22 fewer INTs, so there’s that.
February 23rd, 2020 at 12:06 pm
Bonzai … I don’t expect that Shaq will be accepting $15 mil a year on a long-term contract. We’d be lucky to get him for the $16-$17 mil you mentioned earlier. And it might take more than that in the out-years (that inflation thingie).
I read that the 17th game was during the season, but that it’d be ‘compensated for’ by reducing preseason games to 3. Also read though that the players’ committee that hammered out the deal with the owners voted AGAINST the proposal, but did agree to forward it to the players for a vote.
Agree totally about the padded practices being reduced (that really stinks IMO). And never did hear anything about not counting the QB’s salary (or the highest, whatever). I’m still wondering why the players would vote in favor of more games, when their share of the ‘extra’ profits would apparently be minimal (0.5% more on the season is what it sounds like).

As I’ve learned more about Teddy B, he really doesn’t seem to fit the current Bucs scheme. Carr does, seems like he’d be an improvement. Wish there was a way to keep JW on the team (you never know, he COULD fix his problems) But that only seems possible if we draft a NEW QB
February 23rd, 2020 at 12:54 pm
Shaq candidly said he wouldn’t take a large home town discount. He said that Florida has no state income tax and he would take that into consideration. Meaning He will figure out how much taxes he would have to pay in other states and subtract the difference POSSIBLY. The man wants to be payed and if the Bucs don’t pay him we riot in the streets
February 23rd, 2020 at 1:01 pm
A very talented player that is very vocal in his desire to return to Tampa Bay, how many times have we heard that before? Shaq represents a new era for the team as a free-agent destination, and not just because the income tax. People will see how Shaq went from rags to riches here, as well as players like Breshad Perriman carving out a nice payday for himself. If we give Shaq a nice lucrative deal, it will signal to other big-time FAs that Tampa is the place to be under BA, BL, and TB.
It all starts with Shaq. Give Shaq a deal, and start the Return To Glory in Tampa Bay.

low standard bucfan is so gullible…. shaq played all the cards with clueless fans and now he has an out that the organization did not want him bad enough and that get out of jail free card they disrespected him by talking tag… make no mistake about it his slimy agent controls every single feelings based statement that gullible bucfan drinks like kool aid. he has had 1 good year period. without suh he is nothing more than a good quote for small markets so sign suh and let the cards fall where they may..
February 23rd, 2020 at 1:05 pm
I think Shaq understands the realities of the game….careers….and business. He’s rather have $30 million guaranteed now vs a year-to-year scenario where he keeps getting franchised tagged, may have to move his family, or could suffer an injury and its all done before it paid off.
I do believe he will genuinely give us a home town discount to not have to move his family and stay in the system with Bowles. He seems to get the fact that while you could potentially go for more and more and more…..the career he is in could also collapse in any given year so take what you can get up front and put that in the bank. The rest is icing on the cake.
February 23rd, 2020 at 1:38 pm
This is a baller.
This is a stud.
He is our guy. Lock him up.
And lock up JPP! He’s a freak and a beast and tone setter.
Then, resign Suh- he’s a beast.
Keep. Nassib
Draft some D-Linemen.
Build a defense and pay these studs.
Don’t waste salary cap on turnover machine QB- Jameis Winston. Cut bait and let the Defense do their thing. Those guys earned it.
February 23rd, 2020 at 1:39 pm
Sign Shaq. He’s still young at 27, was excellent as a back-up in Denver, and showed what a monster he is as a starter last year. Trans tag Winston, and hope, pray, make sacrifices to the alter of the football gods, whatever it takes, that someone else signs him so we end up with a couple of extra first round picks. Defense wins championships, Winston throws picks.
February 23rd, 2020 at 1:42 pm
Jameis is not consistent and “hope” is a four letter word. Don’t pay franchise money for what we “hope” will happen. Cut bait, get a vet and draft a guy.
Arians has the system, let him show us the system with an affordable QB option and a beefed up defense.
I’m don’t with believing Jameis will take us to the playoffs bc it never happened. And the way it didn’t happen: lots of poor play st beginning of seasons and talking draft by October.
If we suck in 2020, can- for the love of god- please be because of a different outcome than Jameis’s decision making? I’ve seen that re-run five times. Won’t watch a sixth, and if I have to I suppose I will, but I will be ready and spring-loaded for “I told you so” when we continue our descent into irrelevance.

Keep the DEFENSE
Need someone to get on the field after Jamies turns it over again
February 23rd, 2020 at 1:50 pm
You hadn’t got to it yet? Wow!! 100 Winston articles and you just didn’t get to this one?? … And you STILL had to throw in Winston!! Dude Barrett won then more games this year than Winston!! That idiot would throw the pick at the worst time and Barrett would get the ball back or cause the defense to score!!! You are way too hung up on Winston man!! He is an ok QB that can and WILL throw you out of a lot of games and actually lose them for you!! They can give him another year and MAYBE if the defense is stellar enough to make up for all his mistakes then they can slip into playoffs.. but then Winston will immediately throw 4 picks and lose them the playoff game
February 23rd, 2020 at 1:57 pm
SHAQ will get franchise tagged. Jameis will not !
Easy to read…. can shaq “dominate “ again or is it a one year wonder. You cannot risk long term on him. No history on this fool.
With jameis …. you know what your getting into. One one thing he improves and BOOM .. best QB ever. So it’s more a 2-3 yr contract.
February 23rd, 2020 at 2:06 pm
I think Nelson will step up and replace nassib nicely as much as I.like nassib, gotta save a few bucs somewhere if they are going to.sign sugar, jpp and shaq you gotta have some draft picks on the line as well
February 23rd, 2020 at 2:29 pm
Adrnagy,
Lol no! Nope. Hell no.
Shaq > Jameis
Jameis is gone, too many turnovers.
You do know that Shaq’s Stats are a good thing, and Jameis’ Turnovers, sacks, penalties, etc. are all bad?

Pay the defense and more. Adrian Phillips safety and offensive tackle. As far as Bonzai Winston hasn’t done it in five years,Bridgewater,Carr, Dalton might as well sign Dalton cheaper and draft a Quarterback.

So the Glazer boys take Shaq and his family to one of their newer acquistions…the Vinoy Hotel and boat basin in St Pete. They take them aboard the yacht…go out sailing in the gulf…charm the family and then point out that they own the Vinoy..tennis courts…hotel..gym…yacht docks…and promise to help Shaq invest his millions if he wishes so he can move into the ownership class.
Get him signed! Use any and all methods. Do it quickly..add JPP and the rest of the chips will fall into place. If the Bucs sign Shaq and JPP before the draft it will signal just how serious BA was about bringing back the D. The rest will fall into line to play on what is going to be a truly great defense if we bring them all back and add a draft pick or two.
February 23rd, 2020 at 4:08 pm
There is considerable confusion about these tags….I have asked Joe to do an article to clear this up…..but here it is.
Bonzai…..you are incorrect.
Under the franchise tag, a team that declines to match the offer gets two first-round draft picks as compensation. Under transition, the team that loses the player gets no compensation. … The reason a team would use the transition tag is that they can get a better idea of the player’s value.
February 23rd, 2020 at 4:12 pm
So, as far as Shaq is concerned…..
He doesn’t like the franchise tag because it makes it very difficult for another team…..they would have to match his salary and give up draft picks therefore freezing his value.
He is OK with the transition tag because he could negotiate with other teams openly and they would not have to give up picks…..also, the Bucs could match other offers and keep him.
Makes sense to me.
February 23rd, 2020 at 4:19 pm
StPete … When Shaq said ‘Show me the money’ I’m thinking he meant something more than ‘Yay, I got to ride on the Glazers’ yacht’. Shaq wants to OWN their yacht (and a lot more). I’ll bet also that his agent, Oily Drew Rosenhaus, is all excited knowing that he gets to negotiate with the Bucs again.
I noticed earlier in this thread that tmaxcon insists that we re-sign suh because he’s the man behind it all. Proves the long-held saying that ‘Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile’. (I couldn’t believe that TMax was actually FOR somebody on the Bucs). He nailed that one though.
February 23rd, 2020 at 4:23 pm
IMO shaq is the man out. We will sign jpp. Suh. Nassib and Winston. Draft pass rusher.
February 23rd, 2020 at 4:26 pm
BucEmUp … Nelson MAY one day be a real DLineman for the Bucs, but right now he’s lucky to still be on the team as opposed to the Practice Squad. Sorry but his 9 games with 0 sacks, 0 QB Hits, 0 TFLs (but 1 PD, 1 FF, 1 solo tackle & 7 assisted tackles) didn’t show me anything. I’m surprised they kept him on the team last season.
February 23rd, 2020 at 4:30 pm
Adrnagy … “IMO shaq is the man out.” Uhhh, BA kinda let the cat out of the bag when he said that Shaq ain’t goin’ nowhere. You don’t let a young defensive stud like that walk in Bucsville.

This team has lacked leadership for years and here is a chance to lock one up. Also find a way to get JPP signed he is the real on field emotional leader. Not a coincidence that the D came around after his return.
February 23rd, 2020 at 4:48 pm
If you want them all back then sign them all …but make damn sure you bring back Mr. 5,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 23rd, 2020 at 5:10 pm
To pay Shaq, JPP, and Suh, we need JW money….and BA has already said he wants the most emphasis on our D and bringing guys back and fixing a hole at Safety.
Sorry, but that means no JW. And Perriman will be our other casualty. So we’ll sign a bridge QB, draft one and get to the playoffs WITHOUT all of the interceptions JW delivered. Life is good.
February 23rd, 2020 at 5:12 pm
And dont worry Shaq, I have a feeling you’re getting priority contract #1 (no tag) and you will be happy 🙂
And he deserves it! No drama diva stuff, wants to stay here….its a no brainer Mr. Licht!
February 23rd, 2020 at 5:21 pm
Didn’t realize Jay Hayes was the DC for an XFL team…..he was hyped up to be a homerun hire to fix the Bucs Dline…..didn’t work out that way but then again so was Brentson Buckner and he just got fired from the Raiders.
February 23rd, 2020 at 5:24 pm
Jason Licht has gotta sign this guy. There is no way around it. Half or more of the fanbase is already against Jason. If he don’t sign Shaq almost every fan in Tampa Bay will call for Jason’s head.
I’m not even worried they won’t resign Shaq. They know they gotta get it done. Only question I got is how long the deal will be. I highly doubt they use a tag for this player. Look back at history and you see that not the way we operate. Shaq aren’t the kind of player I think they change their philosphy for. Winston might be that player but not Shaq.
February 23rd, 2020 at 5:33 pm
And the Bucs have 90 million right now. Nothing stopping them from signing Shaq.
Now we also gotta sign a QB and I believe JPP is a major priority for this team. So after that CAP space will start getting tight……It will start getting dicey to try to resign guys like Suh and Nassib………..for that reason it is a much better option to lock Shaq up long-term. That way you can move some of the CAP hit around and free up cash to bring Suh back.
Oh and just run O.J. off for a few more bucks. He is not hacking it and never has. He’s never had a season performance as good as undrafted Brate had the year before he got here. That should tell ya all ya need to know……..If you still confused rewatch the 49ers game. He indeed was the absolute worst football player on the field that day for both teams. Overrated garbage.

I hear ya…ultimately they all want their dollars but there are different ways to get those bucks.
I had an acquaintance who did commercial real estate in Dallas for a couple of decades and claimed to have heard from a good source that Neon Deion Sanders got a terrific “business” deal outside of football that just just “coincidentally” timed up exactly the same as the Cowboys contracts
I do not know who keeps NFL owners honest when it comes to attempted cap manipulation. But this guy who lived in Dallas swore that Jerry Jones manipulated the cap money all the time with outside deals similar to what major school boosters used to do for big time college athletes.
February 23rd, 2020 at 6:31 pm
Fans would not have gotten the info at all had Joe not reported it, but this is pretty dated given much has likely changed since then. Shaq may not be as warm to a ‘home town” discount as he was, especially if he starts to see pass rush hunger get into a frenzy the closer the draft gets. It is highly unlikely a man at his age and with the growth seen this past season, the coaching he’s had here and previously, and the players around him now that he had a fluke year. I’ll say it yet again. Don’t use a franchise tag when you don’t have to from a money perspective. We don’t need it here. Five years with some guaranteed money early and he will liikely balance out for less per year than the franchise tag. Tags are demotivators…you make players mad or you overpay. Both are bad deals.
And do NOT waste a franchise tag on Winston…even a transistion tag. He will be back. No one will offer Winston more than $12-14 as a back up or chance to compete. He has earned NOTHING. WE owe him NOTHING in Tampa. But ths is his best chance to make more money and start for another year….with competition.
February 23rd, 2020 at 6:34 pm
^^^That is, he will back IF the Bucs want him back and it WILL be for 2/3 of what he allegedly initially stated he wanted ($30M)…and he will eventually jump at that.
But yes, very telling the Bucs are not showing him the same love as they have Shaq in words. After all, Shaq earned it. Winston has not.
February 23rd, 2020 at 6:46 pm
StPete … I’m sure we’ve both heard stories about what goes on ‘under the table’ in the NFL & other pro sports. Most businessmen like Jerry Jones didn’t build an empire by playing strictly by the rules. Now that I think of it, same probably goes for most politicians.

Mr. Reality … I can think of several teams who are desperate for a decent starting QB. I’m sure that you can also. Jameis has averaged 24 TDs & real close to 4,000 yards passing during his 5-year career. He’d averaged 15 INTs per year UNTIL this past year, then his INTs blew up.
Personally I’d love to see Derek Carr here for a number of reasons, BUT … that most likely isn’t gonna happen. Jameis for a reasonable price & on a very short-term contract is my 2nd choice of all the QB names that’ve been bantered about. Yes there’s a risk involved, which is why signing a decent backup QB is so important. Not at all interested in spending a high draft pick on a QB this year UNLESS a can’t-miss QB falls into our lap. That’s not likely to happen either.
February 23rd, 2020 at 7:17 pm
There is no reason to tag Shaq barrett with anything – he wants to be here and we want him to be here. If Jason Licht can’t figure this one out, he is even worse GM than I thought.

If this team wants to never get better than 9 wins….wants to expect a QB to throw too many games away…they will bring Winston back to start. Step back for a minute and think how stupid it sounds that “Well, QBs always take longer in an Arians system.” Some pretty smart football people have already debunked that as Winston has probably maxed that out already…and if this is Winston’s peak, it is NOT good enough to take through another season. Dare I say of any of the teams who may be looking for a starting QB…and it’s not that many…Winston is NOT creating any chatter. What fan blog is out there saying “Oh yeah, go get Winston. He’s our guy.” What GM wants this baggage if Arians can’t hasn’t fixed him. I’ll say it again. If brand names don’t want him sorry mug on their product, what NFL franchise is going to want it.
Winston’s best chance is back here, and I see is proof that Winston isn’t exactly hot on the bring back list.

Those who don’t want to tag Shaq are spot on.

SteveK you are digging your own grave sir. If Jameis is back or not I still have my team to cheer for but if Jameis stays what you got, cause there is no way you can cheer for this team with Jameis on it. There is simply not way, so if he comes back you leaving? I mean we all can hope so but the question is will you?

Ndog
You’re too cute. Im not going anywhere. I’m a Buc fan. I own a Jameis jersey, and proudly wear it on Sundays. Ita just the turnovers and losses that lead me to believe we can do better.
Who knows if Jameis is back? I hope not. You hope so. Let’s see.

Three years with 15 million guaranteed each year and a ton of incentives. A team option on that third year.

Sign Barrett and JPP. Let Jamis “crab eating woman grabbing pick 6 throwing eat a W ” Winston walk and let him be someone elses problem. I rather sign someone like Carr or even Bridgewater and draft a 3rd round rookie qb just as insurance. That would cost us about 60 million. Draft a 1st round tackle,2nd round rb,3rd round qb,4th round dt and use the rest on best available player. The other 20 million could be on players we sign for 1 year prove it deals like last year when we signed Barrett perriman and suh. Jpp could be replaced too if need be with a younger player too. But only need be.
