The Jordan Love Question

February 20th, 2020

Pricey insurance.

As intelligent readers of JoeBucsFan.com are wont to do, they listen to the internationally popular “Ira Kaufman Podcast” the minute it publishes twice weekly.

There, Joe has stated he wouldn’t oppose the Bucs drafting Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round if the Bucs keep Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

If Jameis pans out (in his final chance?) with the Bucs this fall, great! Love is a helluva bargaining chip for either a trade in next spring’s draft or in negotiations with Jameis on a long-term contract.

If Jameis doesn’t pan out, then the Bucs have CYA’ed themselves and already have his replacement.

So what is one to think of this Love? Is he the next Jameis (wildly inconsistent with tremendous highs and gut-wrenching lows peppered with a knack for picks) or is he the next Pat Mahomes?

NFL Network draft analyst and former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah sees Love (at this point in February) being selected around No. 20 overall. The Bucs select No. 14. So Love is sort of in the ballpark.

You can see (and hear) Jeremiah discuss projected first-round quarterbacks Jacob Eason and specifically, Love, in the video below.

    No.

  2. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Not good enough for the Bucs….but good enough for some team drafting around the Bucs pick…ahhh …the science….errr ….rationalization of NFL drafting….wonder how’d he look after Sean Payton got his hands on him

  3. Jean Lafitte Says:

    2nd round at best

  4. tim1966 Says:

    Yes

  5. Buc50 Says:

Justin Hebert would be a better choice if available. One guy I would be really upset with is Jake Fromm…that guy is terrible.

  6. Robert Says:

another 1st round pick AND sign someone who has proven unreliable—which would hurt the cap/defensive side. NO.

Draft him if you want, but then I’d get a journeyman vet or start Ryan Griffin.

Ideally, get BRADY, trade ME, sign Perriman and watch the offense open up.

either way. no thank you to the option JBF is proposing.

    let the crabman free!

  7. doctor_berto Says:

    I love Love

  8. Buc50 Says:

Trade ME??? Your CDB must be spiked.

    Joe

Sounds like the safest plan. As long as we do not put all of our chickens in JW’s basket I’m fine.

And Love would be affordable for awhile…depending on the new CBA…we wouldn’t have to move him after a year…be nice to actually have depth at the most important position for a few years.

And I realize that while I certainly believe JW could FINALLY have a breakout year along with the entire team I simply do not trust him on any level. I wish him the best..and obviously if he remains a Buc I’ll cheer for him but at the end of the day I realize JW frightens me. He’s not trustworthy. Talented for sure.

If BA decides JW is option A I’m cool with that as long as there is an obvious option B this year.

  10. DoooshLaRue Says:

I second trading ME13, and have suggested it several times before.
    Definitely not a popular opinion.
He’s great and I like him, but we don’t need him.

I also think that as CG12 continues to light it up and eventually gets a bigger contract than Mike……. Mike will not be happy about it and it will create problems.

    Sell high.
    Sell now.

  11. WestChap Says:

If we draft a QB in 1st round we must jettison Jameis. He will crack under the pressure and be a bad influence. Don’t do it. If we keep Jameis, we need a quality vet backup not a rookie.

I’m all for a rookie QB, but only if he’s being groomed by someone other than Jameis.

  12. WestChap Says:

The Mike Evans trade insanity is galling. He is literally the best player on the team. Don’t trade him. Get him a QB who can hit him in stride so he gets to the playoffs and ultimately the HOF where his talent belongs!

Literally true in my case. I have an alert.

  14. LordCornelius Says:

Pat Mahomes never had a bad college season of INT’s like this so I don’t really get the comparison.

His highest INT season was 36 TD to 15 INT and he finished his last year with 41:10 ratio

I guess athleticially / whatever but the QB position is so much more about the mind than that.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t get the feeling Love is going to be good.

  16. Cobraboy Says:

Someone should put together “lowlight” reels on these guys, interceptions, fumbles and dumb-ass plays. Highlights don’t come even close to the entire picture.

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

If you’re gonna pick a QB with our 1st pick then move up and get a guy who is worthy of the pick like Tua or Hebert. Don’t waste it on Jameis Winston II, I mean Jordan Love. Imagine their competition during TC comparing TO’s.

I still think Jacob Eason fits the mold Arians is looking for.

The Carson Palmer mold. Pure strong arm pocket passers.

  18. Robert Says:

ONLY trade ME if you get Brady who makes stars out of almost any receiver as he puts it on the money.

If we have a journeyman, or Griffin starting we need him. obviously if we kept JW he is needed as JW throws jump balls. but that’s 40+ million for two players…….and we are losers. f the stats.

  19. Craig Says:

Love might be a carbon copy of Jameis, but Utah State was a disaster this past season. There was a new coach and, besides Love, there were two seniors on offense.

He will be a project that I don’t think Arians wants to handle.

Fromm would be better. He might go late in the first, so the Bucs could trade down and get him. I would prefer one of two safeties there and a QB and RB in the second round.

  20. CalBucsFan Says:

No disrespect, the young man is very talented, but I would take Georgia QB Fromm over Love.

  21. thisisouryear!! Says:

I agree with Fromm. I saw a Love a couple of times against nonranked teams and he didn’t show me much. I like Fromm. I keep thinking there has to be something to the fact that he beat out Jacob Eason and Justin Fields.

  22. catcard202 Says:

A lot of 1st read throws in his tape… but he’s got the arm BA desires.
Gunslinger mentality that admires Mahomes & isn’t afraid of tight coverage.
But have not seen him “throw guys open” w/ any consistency. (That may be due to the level of his WR corps in 2019 – They were better in 2018 & his stats show that as well)

He’s worth a 1st rd flier to lock in the 5th yr option…but he’s not a Day1 starter & would need a yr of grooming before taking the reigns.

I agree w/ Joe in not being opposed to the FO drafting him for the cupboard, if JW3 returns on a TAG….But I would love to see Licht move down & gain a couple more picks, before taking either Love or Eason later in Rd1.

If Licht could somehow get MIA to jump up to 14 for 18&56, that would be ideal for taking rainy day flier on QB & allow the FO to get 3 of 4 – RT / DL / Edge / RB they also need – all on day 2.

Still think that they should have taken Drew Lock @ #39 in 2019 draft…Even with SMB proving to be a solid pick. (I think Franchise QB’s are more valuable tan SlotCorners & Lock would have made this off-season less dramatic. JW3 would be out & the focus would be on keeping the Front 7 & adding OL – w/o having $25M in limbo for a QB1.)

  23. Bucs Guy Says:

Love = Josh Freeman 2.0. Hard pass. Love’s ceiling is backup QB.
And anyone who believes we should trade Mike Evans must have a concussion.

  24. SteveK Says:

Not Jameis= a chance at playoffs.

    Turnovers must leave the building!

  25. Will Says:

Trading ME isn’t a popular thing to say. I love the guy he’d a class act. At the Rams game he came over signed autographs and gave away done of his game stuff. As much as fans would be upset about it. I wonder what we could get in return and would it be worth the risk?

  26. Smashsquatch Says:

Not sure about Love although drafting a QB early will be considered.

Trading ME for the right price would be wise. Keeping ME & CG in 2021 will cost $35-40M. Evans’ cap hit was pushed back twice in 2018 which inflated both his salary and cap figure moving forward. Trading him sometime between now and March 2021 has to be considered. I contend those who think carrying two WRs at that cost don’t understand the basics of a salary cap; additionally, those who think ME is the keeper over CG in BA’s offense are simply wrong.

  27. Buccaneerscotty Says:

You dumb @ss people want to trade mike and keep America turnover machine?! Wtf are you smoking?

  28. Tbbucs3 Says:

”Ideally, get BRADY, trade ME, sign Perriman and watch the offense open up.“

This is why not everybody should be allowed to comment on here.

  29. Tbbucs3 Says:

Does anyone actually think the offense last year wasn’t “open”….I mean it was a top 5 scoring offense for Christ sakes.

  30. Buc50 Says:

You guys that think Fromm is good better go look at the second half of 2019. That guy was horrible.

  31. BigHog Says:

Listen up people if Mr. 5,000 is not under center to begin the 2020 season…LET THE LOSING BEGIN!!!

  32. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

I follow the Georgia Bulldogs and completely agree on Jake Fromm (State Farm). The Bulldogs kept him over Justin Fields and paid a heavy price in doing so. Fromm is at best an NFL backup hiding out on the bench.

  33. westernbuc Says:

No, if Licht keeps Jameis I’d rather our next GM and coach pick the next QB

  34. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Bucs should pick Jake Fromm in 2nd round. Hopefully, he’ll start after Bucs go 2-6 and JW leads the league in turnovers.

  35. Pick6King Says:

Same people bashing Fromm are the same people that keep saying wait till next year with Jamoist. At some point, results actually matter. #NoPlayoffs

  36. Heath Hunt Says:

This thread could possibly be the most insane of anything ever posted here and that’s saying a lot.

  37. SOEbuc Says:

Ummm…..okay. I’m gonna have to go with defense in the first round and hopefully the Bucs realize that also. I like Kinlaw or Delpit. Pay an established vet OL and a RB in the second

    1. Kinlaw/Delpit
    2.RB
    3.OL/S/DE
    4. QB
    5. CB
    6. DT/DE
    7. OL

  38. SOEbuc Says:

Minus Delpit for S Xavier McCinna in the first round. His play looks like it could be sick in Bowels defense.

  39. TOM Says:

Personally I’d rather have Herbert than Love. Maybe Eason in 2nd Rd.

  40. Buczilla Says:

If we resign Jameis then I am fine taking this kid in the first round. Arian’s track record shows that he can develop young quarterbacks that CAN be developed (Jameis has yet to prove this). I have got to trust my coach, especially one with Arian’s resume, if he deems this Love or Eason dude worthy, it’s good enough for me. We need a solid backup plan if Jameis doesn’t become a franchise guy.

In the unlikely event that we trade for Stafford, then no need for a rookie an this year.
