Ex-QB weighs in
Retired quarterback Brady Quinn is a reasoned man when it comes to America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.
Asked by a Bucs fan yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio about where Jameis might have a market, Quinn deflected the question and wouldn’t name a team.
He sort of said any new team would have change Jameis, “force him to limit some of the turnovers,” and Quinn wasn’t sure who might do that. He preferred to focus on the Bucs as as whole and their challenge to answer the three major Jameis questions.
“So how much of [the turnovers] was a byproduct of a first year being in a system, the type of system, and it being Jameis Winston,” Quinn said. “There’s a lot of those questions you have to figure out how to answer.”
Quinn said keeping Jameis on the one-year franchise tag would “make a lot of sense,” but he added he could see Phillip Rivers in a Bucs uniform and he likely would want to play for the Bucs because of the weapons in place.
Challenged by the Bucs-fan caller on the performance and ability of tight end O.J. Howard, Quinn isn’t writing him off and speculated Howard might have been struggling with a new offense more than it appeared.
“For whatever reason, there hasn’t been that [flip of the] switch yet, for everything,” Quinn said.
The first-year-in-the-offense reality/excuse is real for every player. But Quinn is right, the effect of that on Jameis really needs to be dissected to evaluate him properly.

Force him to limit turnovers? Do you understand what kind of by-products that might cause?
Arians got Jameis to get a better longer ball, Godwin mage them seem longer by his after catch yards, but that made his short game horrid.
Forcing Jameis’ mind in one direction causes other dis-functionalities to come to the fore.
That might be what happened to O.J. Jameis forgot him.
These things are part of the reasons that I think Jameis should move on. He is one of those who would even have a hard time asking if you wanted fries with that.

The final 7 games of Carson Palmer’s first year of Arians offense he had 7 interceptions. Winston had a whopping SIXTEEN.
Not exactly the right trend.

As many fans on here have said, Jameis hasn’t shown much in terms of pulling out games at the end or winning in front of the home fans. On the road he has played his best games but many were in year one and two of his career. Years 3, 4 and 5 havn’t been any better than his earlier career.
Bucs should avoid paying him a large contract. Maybe not all the yardage and stats but Bridgewater or Rivers or Dalton would get this team to a winning record, maybe not deep in the playoffs.
As long as Winston makes mistakes vs. good teams, they capitalize on the field position and Winston puts points on the board for the opponent.
Football is a team game, winning is the goal. Bucs havn’t been in playoffs in over 12 years. Winston’s had 5 years to change that. Time to change the batter.

He’s just too inconsistent to be trusted. His decision making is erratic and I have not seem much growth in 5 seasons. He still tends to lock onto his WR’s telegraphing his throws. He’s easily baited by DB’s into making bad decisions. He’s seems unable to audible out of bad plays that are doomed to fail because of a defensive play call….. Something you would see from a QB who has command of his offense and can course correct on the fly.

Brady Quinn seems afraid to say anything tangible – just tip-toed around the whole issue basically. Way to lay it all out there Brady. Very insightful. Just repeating things that others have already said…
Jameis is what he is at this point… if you feel the turnovers hurt the team too much, then you have to just move on (and away) from Jameis Winston. Flaws seem too ingrained in him to expect much change. The “I’m ballin” and “check your page” comments shows he has a total lack of self-awareness or remorse, so he probably doesn’t seem the turnovers as a huge issue. Cherry-picking his own stats to speak about.

Luck was in Arians offense as a rookie had 18 INTs and 6 games without a pick
So a rookie outplayed a veteran in this offense
Luck also never lost consecutive starts under Arians as a rookie
Blaming the system is a cop out. Jameis decision making will never change he will always play dumb and choke when the game is on the line

Winston can’t properly read a defense. How many slant passes were thrown directly to waiting linebackers? This is also the same reason why Winston is unable to call an audible. Winston has a strong arm but a weak mind…

I’ve been saying for years that JW3 is a play-action QB that’s working a Big12/MAC pass happy offenses w/ little run game support that would allow him to play to his strengths…(If you do the analysis, you’ll find that JW3 is one of the best play-action passers in the league).
JW3 making 1-2 bad decisions a game, has only been part of the problem…The run game has not been a friend to him, since before we knew SteroidHamster was on the juice.

“how much of the turnovers is a byproduct of being in BA system year 1?”… I just don’t understand this logic? He turned it over to much in college and too much for his 1st 4 years in the NFL, so lets disregard all of that and talk about it being year 1 in a system… ok.

I love how all of these analysts and fans just say “limit or cut down on Winston’s turnovers ” like it’s just an easy thing to do or some magic switch you can flip.
Winston will always be a turnover machine, that’s just who he is and how he plays. It doesn’t matter how many years he’s in Arians’ or anybody else’s offense.
The only way to cut down on Winston’s turnovers is to have him throw the ball a lot less times

I have tried to avoid the Jameis question simply because I have no answer. I have pretty much held to the resolution that he is just as good as he is bad. One factor that has concerned me however is the question, “Just how difficult is BA’s offense and in fact does it take at least 2 years to master it’s nuances?” Recently I reviewed all of Winston’s INT”S and it is obvious in many cases he is throwing to a predetermined spot. Unfortunately an unencumbered defender shows up first and the ensuing results leave Jameis with his jock in his hand. Leaves ya wondering if a solid 2nd offseason might help. Again I am no expert but a lot of those passes seem to deliberate to be errors. Go ahead and Sh*t in my sack lunch if you must, Just thinking out of the box.

Here is the question: if Jameis returns, who backs him up? He surely won’t have the leash he had last year. Are we taking a qb in the first? Or should we have a Mariota or someone to really see if it is in his head.
I would bring in teddy and jameis and say you both play for 27 million total with the winner taking the spoils, and the looser getting backup money. Pipe dream I know

Its pretty darn simple… Jameis needs a bigger window and more time to process than most elite QBs. He’s got a hell of an arm and a never-say-quit attitude that have largely carried him to that great stat sheet we’ve all checked many times. However, you can only do so much to mask the accuracy and slowness weaknesses… big guys to go up for jump balls (got em), lots of weapons to vary who he locks onto (got em) and a decent play action (eh, maybe not). He is what he is and is plenty good enough to win with a team perfectly constructed around him… but the Bucs are not that team. We have enough cap room to bring him back while taking hits to the supporting cast on D and not being able to upgrade in FA… but not enough to build the team he needs for a playoff run. Now, if he wants to sign for $20M that’s a different story…
So, good luck Jameis with your next team. Choose wisely or you could be the most talented guy at Publix in a few years. And, onward Bucs!

It all comes down to the last two games.
With a surging, young defense at home with a 9-7 record within reach, JayMiss responded with 6 INT, 2 for Pick-6 and 2 mind numbing losses.
No wonder BA lost all confidence in JayMiss.
Best for all sides to divorce.
A Transition Tag makes the most sense. At least, Bucs could perhaps recoup something of value for the WORST draft pick in franchise history since Culverhouse drafted Bo Jackson and got nothing but humiliation in return.

All this speculation is one the but dont miss the obvious. Not even the joes who defend him everyday are calling him a franchise quarterback. He’s not so new regime go get your guy whether it be through the draft or trade. If your gonna pay big money at least it’ll be with someone who protects the ball, I prefer that over a meaningless stat yards per game which prompted that fool to say check ya sheet I’m ballin

It is a great question of how many picks we’re due to a new system.
But the bad part is we didn’t see the progression throughout the season and show signs of improvement down the stretch………Yeah sure receivers were hurt, Winston had an injury yada yada yada yada………By now I think I speak for a lot of Buc fans that hearing excuses is stomach curdling………We want freaking results and been darn patient enough. I don’t give Winston any benefit of any doubt for anything any more. You just gotta win games dude Period!!
All that said what goes way overlooked by most Buc fans is that all the turmoil and hair pulling we have been through over five years don’t really matter. Bruce has been here one year. He don’t care what happened in the first 4 seasons. All’s he cares about is what happened in his season and if Winston can get better on his team. Those four seasons of Dirk Koetter blowout style football mean close to nothing to Bruce……..Bucs fans have way too much emotions played into this. I will be very curious to see what a great QB football mind thinks about this and what he decides to do with Winston. He will attack this Winston question(probably already has) much more logically then us burnt out fans.

If we move on from Winston I’m thinking it’s Rivers coming to town. But I really think there would be a dark horse canidate at stake here as top choice…….No way not Brady. He would not be a option……..Big Ben. If they moving on from Winston the first call they made was to Pittsburg.
Defientally don’t hurt that Bruce would probably love nothing more then to stick it to the Steelers too.
