Do the Bucs and Jameis need each other like a pair of rock legends?
For one NFL columnist, the Bucs and Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, are sort of like the duo that made Van Halen the 800-pound gorilla of rock music.
The incomparable Eddie Van Halen and never-duplicated David Lee Roth were a musical powerhouse together and made magic. Apart, their careers if not lives spiraled out of control.
When the two dissolved their musical act, Roth tried any number of musical stunts to the point his career was so low, he was a failed FM DJ and became an EMT. Eddie Van Halen nearly killed himself as he circled the drain amid booze and drugs, and tangled with cancer.
When Roth and Van Halen kissed and made up after some two decades apart, they returned to their lofty perches on the top of the rock scene.
So, while it seems the Bucs and Jameis are far apart, judging from Jameis’ silence and Bucco Bruce Arians’ zero public support of the former No. 1 overall draft pick, one senses the two are about to go their separate ways.
But Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com believes the Bucs and Jameis will bro-hug each other in a few weeks and all hard feelings will be put aside.
Rosenthal predicts Jameis will return to the Bucs. As Rosenthal wrote, just say “yes” to the transition tag for Jameis.
Jameis Winston, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (transition tag): The further away we get from the regular season, the more it appears that the Bucs are considering their options. The two sides are in wait-and-see mode, but I suspect they both realize they are better off together. Winston has more value to Tampa Bay than any other team, something that a transition tag could prove if the Bucs need the franchise tag for Shaq Barrett. I have my doubts Winston would inspire a huge market on the transition tag.
Joe has been writing for weeks the best scenario would be for the Bucs to franchise tag Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett and transition tag Jameis, since both can be used this year (pending a potential new CBA which Pat Kirwan of SiriusXM NFL Radio claims could go into effect immediately).
And maybe then, all will be well again at One Buc Palace.

The truth of the matter is, Van Halen brought in Sammy Hagar and had several great albums, Roth had a couple successful solo albums himself along with Steve Vai. Once Van Halen reunited they didn’t last long as Eddie Van Halen stated ” 3 of us want to rock and 1 of us wants to do show tunes”. So not really a great analogy Joe.

I’d take Carr in heart beat. Dude can play, give him our weapons and watch the interception get cut by 66%. Play balanced football and allow your defense to take a rest as opposed to having defend a short field and no rest or worse tacking on points to the defense with a pick 6. Thanks for nothing JW.

Joe, wow you are really terrible with Van Halen history.
It wasn’t until Sammy joined that VH had thier first #1 album, all 4 Sammy era VH albums hit #1.
As a matter of fact VH with Sammy was one of the few 80’s era bands to be successful during the Grunge era of music.
When VH has tried to reunite with Roth the outcome has been less stellar as Eddie & Dave have no chemistry and do not get along.
Please keep comparing Jameis & the Bucs to Van Halen just realize if the Bucs are Van Halen in your comparision, they will be more succesful if Jameis leaves. And Jameis will have his Eat ‘Em and Smile moment then will fade away.
We just need to find the Quarterback equivalent of Sammy Hagar

I hate to say it but I’m praying we get a top 2 draft pick next year, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields will be the best ever qb prospects to come out in the same draft, granted we’d have to have a truly horrible year, but is suffering another 7-9 season better for the future, that’ll mean another QB circus with no chance at a true franchise QB, the QBs this year are garbage after Tua (average prospect) n Burrow (system QB)

It actually could be a win-win for us when you really think about it. He could demand a trade, so we get some”value” out of finding someone desperate enough to take him. Or he sits and we get to see what RG4/drafted QB looks like.
Or even better, no one wants him in a trade and he just quits, going to the XFL next year. Then he could just lose games for the Vipers instead of the Bucs. He’d fit right in on that team. Seriously though, I’d take the PJ Walker or the kid from St. Louis (Hawaiian name, can’t recall) over Jameis.

If you tag Shaq you’re sending the message that you’ll looking short term. Shaq wants stability and would probably feel jilted on a one year deal. He has said he wants to put roots down here but how do you do that when the team puts you on another one year rental.
But yes tag Jameis (transition) because if it’s true that he’s demanding 30+ at least the transition tag is several millions less. And if we do lose him we get two #1 draft picks as a consolation.

There really is no other option. Bridgewater is no good except as a backup. Brady will resign with the Patriots. Stafford won’t be available (though I would take him if he was). Brandon isn’t good. Dakk will be franchised or re-signed.
We could draft a QB, but starting him immediately would be risky with an oline in flux. Even if the oline is addressed, it will take time to work out the kinks.

Shane is right, that’s a terrible analogy. VH arguably had more commercial success with Hagar. I personally didn’t like them nearly as much but they sold a lot of records. And Roth had plenty of success as a solo artist. So yeah, bad analogy, but we got the main point regardless.

Smart move would be to use the Franchise tag on Barrett & Transition JW3.
Barrett is a more appealing FA…No NFL FO will be giving up 2 1st round picks for JW3, but might to sign away a sack artist!

The last two games of the season had to cause some tears in Arians’ beer. Does that mean he can forget that and go back to watch more of that disastrous relationship between Licht and Winston.
No, just no. Some things you only need to see once. Check under every bush and rock to find something else with a better potential for team success. Jameis is not the answer to any question that doesn’t deal with the cops.

Shaq deserves a contract, Jameis doesn’t. When Shaq, and the defense were “ballin” the last two games, Jameis was gift wrapping interceptions for Xmas. Two winnable games at home to finish the season with a winning record, and Mr. Magoo blindly throws both games away. He made the 30 pick club, and handed his coach his first ever losing season. Let’s give him another chance, and let Shaq prove it again with the tag? That’s not how it should work. You reward the winners, the real ballers, and send the losers packing.

First I’ll start with the comment Jameis is a coach killer lmao. Smith or Koetter weren’t worth a sh.. just look at what they did at their next job after leaving Tampa. Comment Koetter was the only one with the balls to bench Winston. Again lmao. Koetter balls were much tighter when Fitzpatrick thew 3 interceptions and he went back to Winston. Why didn’t he have the balls to go to Griffin the other QB on the roster. Remember with all Jameis screw ups the Bucs still won 2 more game than they have the pass 2 years and should have won at least another 2

Van Hagar was a totally different style to Van Halen. They appealed to a different crowd. I considered Van Halen hard rock and Van Hagar top 40… Will always prefer rock to top 40 schlock.

I think transition tag is only $22-24M (have seen different estimates) and thus its marginally better than the $27 franchise tag but if some idiot steps up and offers him a lot we get noting in return (the 2 first rounders mentioned above is wrong) and if no one steps up we’re stuck with another 1 year trial for JW while likely drafting a QB in 2nd or 3rd. Yuck!
The Bruces have to man up and sign him longer term or move on. If he’s rational and Bruce thinks he’s the best option, incentives and structure will be key to signing longer term. If he actually believes his ballin is worth $30M per, then we have to step aside and see if someone will pay him… and thus yield another comp pick for us in 2021.
The transition tag is the worst kind of half measure that would hurt the Bucs long term under both scenarios: Good Jameis (huge cap hit when we pay $30+ and have to lose a bunch of key players) and Bad Jameis (another lost year and bad influence on young QB).

Yes, when Jameis or whoever is QB gives the team a decent chance to WIN by not turning it over.
Is Jameis worth a $25 – $30 million investment? That’s a FA DLineman and OLineman, or a FA DLineman, FA RB and FA Safety or CB.
Is a QB you can trust worth that? Yes
Can you trust Jameis? And don’t give me the “it’s not his fault” BS.

Dirk thought winston deserved to be benched, BA is seeing if other quarterbacks will be available. At some point fans gotta know coaches know way more than them. Two coaches iffy on Winston but you have people making every excuse in the book for losing and interceptions. No coach trusts him and dont really blame Dirk for doing everything he could to keep his job, looks like BA is searching for a back up plan as well. Apparently some people think it makes since to go all in on winston again.
Smartest thing Tennessee did was trade for Tannehill when Mariota was just too inconsistent bucs should have same frame of mind. After 5 full years if your saying give him one more year he’s not your guy. Prime example of why saying a guy flashed means absolutely nothing, a quarterback cant make a great throw here or there and be considered a 30 million dollar man

Bonzai … I can’t imagine any scenario where Gruden just releases Carr (3-years left on a very reasonable contract for a very solid starting QB who’s only 28?). Nah, teams would be lined up at Chucky’s door to trade for Derek (Bucs, Bears, Colts for starters, and very possibly others like the Saints & Patriots & several others).
I do agree with you though that the Bucs have limited options, largely due to the timing of this whole thing. Letting Jameis test the FA waters without tagging him first runs the risk that he flies the coup regardless of what he’s offered & that the Bucs go into FA without a potential starting QB. Not a good scenario in the negotiations world (a prescription for overpaying?).
A trade for Carr though involves the same risks … for Chucky. IF he trades Carr before FA starts on March 18th (and before he has a replacement), then he could be the one left without a starting QB. Seriously doubt he’d let that happen, UNLESS he got a king’s ransom for Derek. Hmmm, I guess in Bucsworld that’s always possible though, isn’t it.

Derek Carr is not a type A QB that BA would want. NO WAY BA would accept QB willing to throw a ball into the ground on 4th and goal to avoid any possible INT rather than try for a possible TD or pass interference.
