Overlooking JPP
February 18th, 2020Another day, another Leonard Williams hint.
The folks over at Bleacher Report sure are pushing free agent defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Bucs. Joe pointed out yesterday how Joe would favor such a move if Ndamukong Suh signed elsewhere.
Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report makes it two stories in less than a week in which his outfit is trying to connect Williams to the Bucs. Sobleski thinks the Bucs should sign him in place of Jason Pierre-Paul.
Williams is perfectly suited for Tampa Bay’s three-man front since he can bounce from 5-, 4i- and 3-technique. The redistribution of cap space—of which the Bucs have $85 million, which is the third-most in the league—for a 25-year-old Florida native instead of older options like Suh and Pierre-Paul makes far more sense.
Far more sense — in what world? Does this Sobleski character watch games? JPP was a monster last year– coming back from a fractured neck even. There is no question he helped Shaq Barrett get to 19.5 sacks. Even Barrett was quick to point out how helpful JPP was.
Not sure how many people are aware JPP had 8.5 sacks in 10 games. That’s damn near a sack a game. Williams isn’t a bad player at all, but he’s not coming close to a sack-a-game production.
The Bucs — a team that for over a decade has all but ignored the second-most important player on a team (and in some cases, fully ignored the position) better be careful with JPP.
Without another edge rusher, that massive investment the team plans to make in Shaq might just go up in smoke. We all saw how Shaq’s production fell off the cliff when teams started to focus on him and take him out without worrying about anyone else picking up the slack.
There’s no need (or reason) to be pennywise and pound foolish.

I would sign JPP until at least July, in case he blows his other hand off, or some other stupid accident happens.
February 18th, 2020 at 9:09 am
Free pass joe forgetting the fact bucs missed playoffs because jpp’s lack of good judgment causing him to miss half the damn season slowing the growth of the defense… jpp is a good player not great but most importantly he is s part time unreliable player. Bucs missed the playoffs because of jpp not Winston….
February 18th, 2020 at 9:26 am
Don’t think anyone is saying JPP wouldn’t help the team tremendously this year but for how long after that? Same for Suh. I don’t think anyone honestly believes we are a major contender this year but if we build smart could be soon

Cobyrn
Bucs have never contended. McKay had 1 good year and Gruden and sapp had the glory year. outside of that bucs have only pretended not contended so please explain why in a couoles of years they might figure out how to contend….
you do realize in order to be contenders you must be a postseason threat …. outside of Gruden and sapps glory year bucs HAVE NEVER WON MULTIPLE POSTSEASON GAMES IN A SEASON…. BUCS HAVE NEVER CONTENDED AND NEVER WILL….. 500 football with no chance in postseason maybe glory years to bucfan but to sane individuals its failure
February 18th, 2020 at 9:33 am
clueless writers don’t watch the bucs
JPP made everyone better simple as that

Unfortunately his unreliable part time arse only chose to play half the season…. if jpp was a true team first leader bucs make playoffs but that doesn’t fit the agenda of hate towards the savior jameis Winston
February 18th, 2020 at 9:41 am
I would sign JPP 1st, then worry about the rest.
JPP is the straw that stirs the drink.
Kinlaw would be a less expensive upgrade over Suh.
February 18th, 2020 at 9:48 am
The grotesque hypocrisy from lowstandrd bucfan is astonishing. dungy the clown sould be so proud of his flock of judgemental fools….
Jpp is the reason bucs missed postseason- simple as that
February 18th, 2020 at 9:57 am
This defense has great chemistry. To start replacing pieces before players begin to decline would be asinine. I live in Connecticut, and have seen JPP’s career as a giant, and he is a beast who genuinely loves to play balls out every time he steps on the field. Suh is another one, a once in a lifetime type talent, that you just don’t let go. Glazer’s, Licht, Coach Arians, do WHATEVER you have to to keep this Defense together! CHEMISTRY MATTERS!
February 18th, 2020 at 9:59 am
I hear Leonard Williams has Gettleman and the NY Giants over a barrel…They gave up a few draft picks for him, and Gettleman is gonna get skewered if he doesn’t resign him. So he’s might get tagged if he doesn’t resign with the Giants.
February 18th, 2020 at 10:00 am
Many options are possible if we don’t sign JPP or Suh……namely getting younger…….the draft or FA…..but first things first……sign ’em!!!

Defense together! CHEMISTRY MATTERS
Being available matters far more than chemistry…. chemistry and character are what fans of losing franchise cling to, to justify failure….. talent and availability win championships character and chemistry are irrelevant if you’re watching on the sidelines on game day….. maybe if jpp showed up for offseason workouts last year the defense would have progressed faster and bucs would have not missed post season due to a piss poor defense
February 18th, 2020 at 10:04 am
Suh is far more valuable than jpp…. glazers will probably bring cancer93 back anyhow remember feelings are far more important than talent or wins.
February 18th, 2020 at 10:15 am
yeah tmax… that’s why I said ‘could’. You’re right that there’s been a lot of futility over the years.. and I won’t continue to hold my breath until it actually happens
February 18th, 2020 at 10:18 am
Is it a coincidence that the defense played better when JPP came back? Or is it because the level of competition wasn’t as good than the 1st half of the year? Either way keep JPP and draft a replacement for Suh if you can resign him. For years we have been yelling for pass rushers and now we are just going to allow one of the better ones to walk?
February 18th, 2020 at 10:30 am
How many posters in here wrote off JPP because of his neck injuries? How many authors of articles? How many said he’d never play again and we should cut him?
Just pointing out how many fools this forum has.
February 18th, 2020 at 10:34 am
SC Bucs Fan Says:
The fools with selective memory and denying the facts that jpp did not show up for offseason workouts and missed half the year are the truly laughable ones. Jpp cost bucs a postseason birth period. I would expect nothing less from you though….

Coburn
Glazers have made me a bitter prick. I’m done with feel good stories and optimism. Until this circus earns it on the field there is no hope. If you can’t contend in postseason your season is a failure regardless of improvement.
February 18th, 2020 at 10:42 am
I think we should try to keep Suh and JPP both. Williams would NOT be replacing JPP so I don’t know why that would come into play. Most likely Williams would be replacing Gholstons starting position.
Line could be:
Suh
Vea
Williams/Gholston
JPP is all over the field playing both DE/LB but I think he is just more of a pass rusher which is something Williams does not do as much. Williams is however an upgrade of Gholston and younger.

FK the talking heads!!! I know whats up….sign him! He’s key point to our rush Mr. Licht

Who should they sign to fill in for part time jpp when he makes another dumb choice and misses games this year
February 18th, 2020 at 10:53 am
rather have JPP…..
he’s the leader of the defense and one could argue the team…..
if williams would take a 1year prove it deal sure……sign him along with SHAQ, JPP and Suh….let nassib and beau allen walk in that case….
GO BUCS!!!!!
February 18th, 2020 at 10:53 am
JPP and Shaq have chemistry too. They love playing together. I’ve thought the same with the improved defense, was it JPP or the level of the competition. I’m convinced it’s JPP. Next year if both he and Shaq stay healthy, 35 sacks from just the two of them. Go Bucs!! Keep the D together.

Not playing into your bullsh!T with this one, Tmax. Youre a great instigator, but this is a no brainer that your brain can comprehend but chooses not to…..but keep doing you…..carry on

Not instigating its a simple question who should they draft or sign to cover for part time jpp
February 18th, 2020 at 12:03 pm
Vea, Suh, Williams, JPP, Barrett, White, David. That should be the offseason goal it can happen if you don’t over pay for a QB
February 18th, 2020 at 12:16 pm
Tmax, the last thing I want to do is get on your bad side, but are you insinuating that JPP wrecked his car and broke his neck on purpose? I doubt he meant to blow off his fingers, either.
February 18th, 2020 at 12:28 pm
IF we let JPP walk then I would be very interested in a Vic Beasley 2 year prove it deal similar to Barrett’s deal last year. He has the talent to rush the passer he has proven that. He is just inconsistent. Put him opposite Shaq and see what Todd Bowels can get out of him. Jmho

i don’t have a bad side. i am a kind and compassionate hater….. I have never insinuated that. I am saying based on a pattern of bad choices JPP is not reliable or guranteed to be smart….
madmax
so basically you can ignore jpp’s history of irresponsible choices yet jameis is fair game…. i expect nothing less from this fan base. the hypocrisy is rampant and incredibly entertaining.
February 18th, 2020 at 12:52 pm
tmax, JPP couldn’t go to off-season workouts because he had a broken neck, and we weren’t making the playoffs anyway because Jameis sucks.
February 18th, 2020 at 1:52 pm
Uhhhhh….
Sobleski thinks the Bucs should sign him in place of Jason Pierre-Paul.
Yet from your own quote:
Seems to me he’s saying he could replace Suh or JPP as they’re both older, not that is should necessarily be a replacement just for JPP. They play different positions anyway…
February 18th, 2020 at 2:30 pm
BA has already said he wants to keep that starting front seven together.

Jean Lafitte Says:
The same BA said the secondary was fixed and vh3bust was a #1 cb….. some people will believe anything
February 18th, 2020 at 2:43 pm
If you thought he was going to come back and be healthy, then you just kept him on his original deal – if you didn’t think he was coming back, then you just cut him since they could do so with no cap hit.
It was an incredibly stupid move by Licht that was praised by the dolts here.
February 18th, 2020 at 3:39 pm
@tmax, um, did i say something about jw3 and irresponsible choices or something? Pretty sure i didnt and yet you are putting it on me like that, like i did. Ok, heres the deal since we’re going there. JPP is a master at his game, JW isnt. And granted, JW3 played at the end with an injured thumb, but he didnt have a mangled hand and came through like a champ like JPP….he didnt break his neck then come through it like a champ. JW has NOTHING on JPP!!! JPP is a HARD BITING DOG! Something JW will never figure out!

And the “old guy” made 8 1/2 sacks too!
The whole defensive line needs to be resigned.
February 18th, 2020 at 4:40 pm
JPP over Williams 24/7. Probably get him cheaper too.
February 18th, 2020 at 5:28 pm
Bad teams like to let guys go only to replace them with a non-upgrade for a lot of money that another team passed on. So if it’s JPP v. Williams, no-brainer keep JPP.
February 18th, 2020 at 7:16 pm
It’s not one or the other…The FO should try to resign JPP before the dinner bell rings & go get Williams in FA, after.
Signing Williams should also not stop the FO from resigning Suh, Shaq, Nassib on the Front7….But his contract would mean WR Perriman & DT’s Beau Allen / Nunez-Roches would be lost & replaced in the draft/UDFA…But that was expected.
Any potential Williams addition should also not keep the FO from drafting a guy like Kinlaw, if he falls to #14.
February 19th, 2020 at 12:36 am
@SC: I’m right here 🙋🏻♂️ I wanted to drop JPP once he had his accident. I’ll be the first to admit it. I didn’t think he’d be coming back at all. I’ll admit I was wrong. With that said, I would love to bring him back but not at a huge price tag. Over the cap has him valued at 5.4 million for 2020 but I can’t see that being accurate at all. Maybe I’m wrong. At 5.4 million, I couldn’t put pen to paper fast enough lol
