“Who’s Going To Sit There And Say, ‘Jameis Is Our Guy?'”
February 14th, 2020The Buccaneers have a dubious history of overvaluing football players, from grossly overpaid players to guys who could have been launched or traded before they pocketed a final pile of Team Glazer loot.
See Vincent Jackson 2016, Doug Martin 2017, DeSean Jackson 2018, Eric Wright 2012 and Michael Clayton 2009. And if you like that five-card hand, Joe will raise you with a Michael “Ghost” Johnson, J.R. Sweezy, Brent Grimes 2018, Dashon Goldson and Albert Haynesworth.
Is Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, the next card in the deck?
Storied former Jets, Patriots and Chiefs playcaller Charlie Weis seems to think so.
Now before the Weis haters and detractors appear, Weis had Tom Brady in his early years with the Patriots, led Vinny Testaverde to the AFC Championship game and a Pro Bowl with the Jets. And the throw in the Pro Bowl season Weis squeezed out of Matt Cassel with the Chiefs in 2010 (27 TDs, 7 picks). So don’t come at Joe with Weis being clueless on quarterbacks.
After surveying the current NFL landscape, Weis doesn’t see a market for Jameis outside Tampa.
‘Tell me, who’s going to sit there and say, “Jameis is our guy?” Weis bellowed yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Inconsistent quarterback play has been crushing the Bucs in the Jameis Winston era, Weis added, but he explained that Jameis’ age and production can make even his greatest cynics take pause.
“You know, Jameis’ one argument and I’ve heard it several times; and statistically there’s an argument there. If you go back and look at Peyton [Manning] in his early years and Jameis in his early years, there’s a lot of parallel,” Weis said. “But right now I think the confidence level in Jameis, you know, is not very high anywhere. Now the only one who can do anything about that is Jameis. No one else can do anything about it. You can talk about the coaching; you can talk about the situation. But with the number of quarterbacks that are available this year, and the quarterbacks that are coming in the draft, I don’t think his value is anywhere near what he thinks it’s worth.”
Weis fired a few deserved barbs at the Buccaneers organization and said the Bucs would do better picking the Bengals’ trash.
“I would want Andy Dalton over Jameis,” Weis said.
February 14th, 2020 at 11:22 am
With a solid D, an Andy Dalton game manager with excellent receivers = more wins than with Jameis Christ, America’s Turnover Machine…
February 14th, 2020 at 11:22 am
Ole stale biscuit has to be wondering how he got stuck in this situation!!!!!!! “Word on the street”, is that ole stale biscuit knows he can’t fix jay-miss!!!!! But he can’t jay-miss walk away, because then all the fans will ask why licht Wright is still the GM???? And why is stale biscuit here just to retire in a year!!!!! And why draft a new qb to fit ole stale biscuit’s when ole stale biscuit is leaving in a year or so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the only solution, was sign “blameless” cheap, and sign free-agent in hope that the roster was finally good enough to “DRAG” jay-miss to meaningful games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And when Jay-miss’s camp released that they wanted 30 million, ole stale biscuit was p!$$3[ !!!!!!!!!!!!! He was a new shade of purple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So now ole stale biscuit sits in a “no win” situation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brady > Carr > Bridgewater > Tannehill > Rivers > Winston
February 14th, 2020 at 11:35 am
“I don’t think his value is anywhere near what he thinks it’s worth”
ding, ding, ding!!!!!!!
comparing him to Manning is an insult.

You can claim 5000 yards all you want to. Wins & losses are what matters in the NFL. And Winston has proved that he is a loser over a 5 year period. I think 5 years is waaaayy long enough to prove your worth. Tampa Bay fans are tired of having the tools to win, but lose because of the QB.
February 14th, 2020 at 11:38 am
I think Dalton deserves a shot… He put up a few very good seasons on the BANGLES….. Which is literally the definition of a QB black hole…. I cant imagine him coming into Tampa, with all of our weapons and doing worse than Jameis…. In fact, I’d say he could put up the same numbers and half the interceptions.
February 14th, 2020 at 11:40 am
@Realist … There you go again with that ‘word on the street’ stuff. If you have a source, state what it is. If it’s YOUR opinion, then try using ‘IMO’. But hiding behind ‘word on the street’ is unnecessary & diminishes credibility.
WHO SAYS that BA ‘knows he can’t fix jay-miss’? WHO SAYS that ‘stale biscuit is just here to retire in a year’?
Ironically, I agree with you that BA was most likely pissed when JW’s agent asked for $30 mil plus, but that’s just my opinion. What I don’t agree with you on is that BA now ‘sits in a no win situation’. The hand is still unfolding. Lots of cards yet to play.
February 14th, 2020 at 11:41 am
So not everyone in the NFL world would stick with Jamies I am surprised
I thought only the DUMB fans didn’t like Jamies
But heck Hamies had eye surgery so he will see down field
Look off receivers
Throw tight spirals
So he is fixed
Now a Great QB worth 30 milli. OK Ok I tried
Heck No Jamies is an egotistical
Slow learning
STARTER FOR THE CFL
Jamies if I were you I wouldn’t put up with this Fan Base demand a Release
There are several teams out there just waiting to sign you
The CFL and the XFL would LoVe to have you
February 14th, 2020 at 11:46 am
Seriously, with game attendance dwindling and season ticket renewal ramping up, who in Bucs organization is gonna have the guts to say “In JayMiss we trust”?
Seriously, who? Licht? Arians? Leftwich? A Glazer boy?
None of them have the guts to face the fans with a straight face and say JayMiss is our best shot at returning to relevance.
I’m with Weiss; Andy Dalton or Derek Carr with a decent ground game and a solid, stingy D is the way to go.
Let JayMiss and his new RayBans hit the road.
Peace, out
February 14th, 2020 at 11:51 am
Weis: “After surveying the current NFL landscape, Weis doesn’t see a market for Jameis outside Tampa.” ‘Tell me, who’s going to sit there and say, “Jameis is our guy?” Weis bellowed yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Same thing I’ve said for over a year, and just today in fact. Nothing surprising here.
And why Dalton? I’ll answer that. Winston isn’t selling this team. He capped out in 2016 early and then his Uber escapades came out in 2017 and along with a lot of inconistent (poor) play, he is not drawing fans, and in fact, arguably keeps them home. Some moron commented here a day or so that it’s not Winston’s job to sell tickets. Wanna bet? When you’re bottom 3 in attendance, which is a huge gage of local support that indicates a larger problem. Oh yeah, it’s important. Some other dope said attendance isn’t important…guess again. For the same reason.
Enter Dalton. The Bucs are out of Schlitz. They probably don’t need to send more fans to the “not renew” button or “not going to any” by signing Winston up for more of the same. Dalton doesn’t have teh same strength, and probably not even raw skill. But he HAS won, he IS someone ELSE who has shown he can manage a game…or at least not consistently lose it….something Wisnton cannot do. No, no one is saying we are exciting by game managers…but any right thinking fan would rather have a better decision maker and not quite the risk taker that loses too often, and a CHANCE at winning more when other phases of the game are at least average. And that’s why you have Arians running around talking about his D. A D like the last 7 games we saw, and a QB who doesn’t personally lose so many games…and they can be 10 wins or better. We will never have 10 wins with Winston.
Dalton is better for football overall, and better for business. But he’s still under contract, so the Bengals would have to cut him for the Bucs not to overpay by trade. So I’m back to Rivers. Most likely and viable solution. Don’t forget, Rivers, Winston, or someone else are all bridge QBs. The Bucs will draft their future behind a veteran.
February 14th, 2020 at 11:51 am
Trash? LOL …Dalton is a much, much better option than WinSTUNNED
February 14th, 2020 at 11:51 am
I think Arians comments yesterday were telling to me.
It seems he basically said expect to get back most of the defense guys from last year but not all. Does that mean 2 for sure, probably 3 but not 4. Kinda what I think.
Then it seems like he said that he liked just one other quarterback out of the group that he thinks WILL ULTIMATELY BE AVAILABLE TO THE BUCS. It does not mean that he likes only Jameis and one other guy. It means come March 10th or whatever the date, the options of who he likes and who is available will be limited.
So it seems like it will be decision between possibly that one other qb and Jameis.
Just my interpretation. You can disagree! I did not spend a lot of time analyzing every bit of his statements, it was just my 1st impression on my own. Not what other bloggers across the country wants me to believe it means because of some bold headlines!
February 14th, 2020 at 11:53 am
Bunch of old racists in this thread, what’s new. Really though, Who cares about what a bunch of Crotchety Boomers think about Jameis Winston. Bucs are making the decision, its laughable that all these haters put sooooo much time and effort into bashing a 25 year old. Hey if that’s what makes you boomers happy have at it, who am I to judge what people do in their free time. Go Bucs
February 14th, 2020 at 11:57 am
Word on the street is that folks are taking up a collection to make sure Winston gets his $30M. Close analysis reveals there are 159 donors wanting to pay big bucks. 53 people each from ATL, NO, and CAR area.
February 14th, 2020 at 11:59 am
jameis equals mariota money..i am eating cheetos so i am not going to hit the shift key
February 14th, 2020 at 12:01 pm
I never understand the racist comments… So because he’s black we can’t criticize him for throwing way more picks (and pick sixes) than any other QB in the league? We’re just supposed to act like he’s the saviour?
February 14th, 2020 at 12:06 pm
Andy Dalton, Phillip Rivers, Derrick Carr- not a chance in hell they are better than Jameis or could do as well with the lack of talent over the years on this team. We still do not have a running game, our kicker is good for at least three loses a season, and our o-line can’t run block. I’d be happy with Stafford or Brady, otherwise Just franchise tag Winston and draft a QB.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:10 pm
I agree. I don’t know of any coach that doesn’t preach low turnovers.
You’d have to bring him in as a backup like Tannehill was this year.
If no other teams would want him, why should the Bucs?
And Carson Palmer second year blah blah, but in Palmer’s first year under Arians, he had only 7 picks in his last 7 games of that first year. Winston had 16.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:11 pm
Offer him 5 years at 25m / year on a contract. Guarantee two years, if he balks, franchise him and make him prove he deserves more.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:12 pm
Every coach has said jameis is such a hard worker, fist in, last out and blah, blah, blah.
Where does all that time go? Jameis has never progressed. It is like he got dropped on his head one too many times as a kid. I decided he just can’t get better. Last season was his audition to be the $100 million man and he blew it completely.
You see that short win streak and started think the coach actually got his brain turned on. Then the last two games happened. Splash.
Any functioning QB would be better. Dalton would be an upgrade, but not for the long term. Still need to draft for the future. This is a good year for it.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:13 pm
Mr Reality … “Don’t forget, Rivers, Winston, or someone else are all bridge QBs. The Bucs will draft their future behind a veteran.”
The Bucs MIGHT draft a QB, but odds are that he won’t end up being a long-term franchise QB. He’ll be a developmental project, and most of those don’t work out it seems. I think that if the Bucs re-sign Jameis, it’s NOT to use him as a ‘bridge QB’ but rather to see if he’s THE guy … the franchise QB who we expected him to be when we used our #1 overall pick in 2015 to land him. IMO it’ll take a somewhat team-friendly deal on Jameis’ part and also BA believing that last year’s INTs were just an aberration (and one that won’t be repeated).
Most likely Jameis will be our QB this year, but no one can be sure at this point. Not even BA, because negotiations haven’t been completed (apparently). Jameis MIGHT decide to walk. Or an ‘I can’t believe our good fortune’ trade for Derek Carr MIGHT materialize (hey, I’m still in favor of that one). For some, Tom Brady MIGHT beg the Bucs to sign him (ya right). But if I was a gambling man, I’d put my money on Jameis being here in 2020 on a 1-year deal for about what he made last year, maybe a few shekels more. Then we’ll get to sing this stupid song all over again next year. Whoopee.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:17 pm
Forget Brady and Rivers. Not sure if Bridgewater is a fit, though I’m OK with him if BA wants him. Carr and Dalton have playoff experience with mediocre teams. Both are better than JW.
Yards and TDs don’t count. Wins count. The #1 correlation to wins is not turning the ball over. How often does the team who wins the turnover battle win the game regardless of evey other number? My guess would be at least 75%. I’m sure someone can find the actual number.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:18 pm
with the number of quarterbacks that are available this year, and the quarterbacks that are coming in the draft, I don’t think his value is anywhere near what he thinks it’s worth.”
WHAT THE FRIIIGGGG!!! I HOPE THE GLAZERS WAKE UP !!!

Defense Rules Says:
February 14th, 2020 at 12:13 pm
WELL SAID AGAIN ………….Defense Rules
February 14th, 2020 at 12:19 pm
@LOL, yeah, one would have to be racist to wnat Winston gone right? Who would not want a crotch grabbing, crableg stealing, suspension magnet, disgraceful off field shenigans over and over, a losing record, and leading the league in INTs over the last five years, and setting an NFL record no less? Man, one would have to racist not to want all that. Any why stop at five years when you can go for six or more?
February 14th, 2020 at 12:22 pm
Been saying it all off season there won’t be a 30 million dollar market for Jameis
20-25 sure
He’s not good enough or consistent enough to be paid like a top 10 qb
February 14th, 2020 at 12:27 pm
@loyal… not outside of tampa. Tampa would do it unfortunately. Everyone else would like to have him come in on a prove it deal… like a 2 year 25mi to compete but the glazers will pay him
February 14th, 2020 at 12:27 pm
“Stale Biscuit” is 100000X the coach that either Dirk or Smitty was.
Not sure why anyone would have such a problem with Bruce Arians. The guy’s resume speaks for itself but whatever.
If his QB folded in 2019 under the system in terms of too many turnovers, at some point it might just be on the QB…
Every other player basically improved for the most part. No other staff has shown an ability to develop players the last like 10 years.
But yeah yeah Bucs Mafia Tampa 2 sheep sheep autobot Realist bla bla bla bla
February 14th, 2020 at 12:28 pm
Sign Jameis!
February 14th, 2020 at 12:29 pm
This is the reason they womt have to franchise Winston. I keep hearing winston will go somewhere and win a superbowl as if he can even get to the playoffs but if he does it wont be at 27 million a year. No one except the bucs would overpay for an inconsistent quarterback.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:41 pm
Also Dalton sucks IMO. He’s been on some decent Cincy teams with good defenses / AJ Green / run games and is a game manager QB still at best.
The only guy that intrigues me over Winston is Derek Carr.
Carr has had no weapons the majority of his career in Oakland and also dealt with horrible defenses year after year. Tyrell Williams / JOrdy Nelson were his WR’s and those guys would have been our #4/5
4000 yards / 70% completion / 23 TD 8 INT with some TE no one had ever heard of as his best target probably. They also ran the ball more and were more balanced than us so that helps. But his career #’s are solid as hell.
February 14th, 2020 at 12:41 pm
I don’t like Dalton. Maybe It’s his red hair or big attitude, Hell, maybe I hate white people…..but I must say I’m warming to the idea.
Would still prefer Carr but really, any QB that doesn’t give the other team more opportunities than they deserve and can unite the locker room ( VERY IMPORTANT) will make me happy.
Just Get rid of the “Ballin’ Bullsh!tter and we’ll be a wining team.
Go Bucs!
February 14th, 2020 at 12:54 pm
Hoping the Glazers realize how the fan base will react once JW has his first 3-4 INTs games next year.
February 14th, 2020 at 1:00 pm
Ridiculous
February 14th, 2020 at 1:04 pm
Winstons interceptions over the years before last we’re around 16. You are going to throw him away because of one season. You would not take 5000 yards, 30+ touchdowns and 16 int. That’s an MVP candidate folks. Careful what you wish for!
February 14th, 2020 at 1:05 pm
Redskins is the only team I could look at their past QBs and say they may take a flier on JW…
Maybe the Chargers if they don’t get the QB they desire…
Gruden would NEVER put up with lack of ball security and Belicheck is all about character as well as ball security so not a chance in reality there!
Not excited about Dalton but certainly would rather see how how could turn out rather watch the same repeat of the last 5 years as a demonstration of insanity!
February 14th, 2020 at 1:05 pm
I’ll take Dalton at $17.5 million for a mid round pick.
February 14th, 2020 at 1:08 pm
Arians and Kostyra both have a vertical game that is going to produce more int’s. Give him a running back, D that’s not last in the league and average O line and see what happens. Worst is we go one more year, best is he turned it all around and we have our guy next 15 years.
February 14th, 2020 at 1:09 pm
Jameis Winston has now played five seasons. I don’t think he is likely to ever have a season good enough to win three straight games against playoff-caliber teams. Where are his signature wins against good teams? His performance to date has been poor against the better defensive teams.
If some do think he is eventually capable of that, how many years do we give him? Six? Seven? Ten? THIS YEAR was supposed to be the “year of accountability”. This year was his contract year, with millions of dollars to be gained with stellar play.
And if you agree that he is unlikely to ever be that QB, then bringing him back at ANY price is foolhardy. If next year is going to be lost anyway, better to bring in the cheapest veteran you can, keep the defense intact, and draft your next attempt at a franchise QB.

From JBF Archives one year ago today:LMAO
Jameis Winston Says He Told Himself To Disregard Coaching
February 14th, 2019
Leading up to the Super Bowl, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, put himself out there for the national media to probe his mind.
Prior to that, Jameis had stayed away from all national interviews since he was first publicly accused of grabbing a female Uber driver without permission and in an inappropriate area.
So Joe can only conclude that Jameis wanted the football world to hear from him. He wanted to answer the questions out there about his game and more.
A healthy chunk of what Jameis said left Joe confused, perplexed, stunned and/or head-shaking.
One question posed to Jameis by Tampa’s own Leger Douzable, the former 10-year NFL defensive end, was an inquiry into how Jameis turned things around midseason, specifically how he got himself right mentally to return from an October benching.
Jameis said it was all about self-evaluation.
“I had to look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘Hey Jameis, what do you have to do?’ Jameis explained. “And that was simply, ‘Get back to playing Jameis Winston football. Be yourself. Have that swag. Don’t try to be something that a coach is trying to get you to be.’ You know, you gotta go and be you.”
Well, that there is easily the greatest piece of evidence yet that Jameis was very down on his past Bucs coaches.
Also at the Super Bowl, he said now is one of the first time coaches have had his back and trusted him in four years, a take Joe found ridiculous but important because it reflects Jameis’ mindset.
As for Jameis earnestly advising himself not to be what coaches want him to be, well, good luck succeeding if you retain that attitude, Jameis.

Nothing to add.

February 14th, 2020 at 1:24 pm
Seeing how most players leave here and start winning, (Bennet, Blount, Talib, Wright come to mind) I bet money Winston will leave here, go to the Patriots and get a ring the same year lol
February 14th, 2020 at 1:25 pm
The Patriots can have him. Belicheat won’t put up while his BS turnover issue more than 1/2 of a season
Let him walk!
Peace, out

WHOOP THERE IT IS!! BYE BYE JABOO!!! LOL
February 14th, 2020 at 2:06 pm
Here’s an interesting comparison that I haven’t seen anyone bring up. Matt Stafford in his 1st six years in the league (he barely played in year 2 because of injuries) threw 85 picks compared to 88 for Jameis in a similar amount of games. I think Stafford is probably the closest comp to Jameis that we have. Although he hasn’t won, he has cut his interceptions way down over the past several years…
February 14th, 2020 at 2:18 pm
It’s like for the last 4 1/2 years we haven’t watched almost the worst pass defense in NFL history. It’s almost like jameis is holding the team back. When for 4 years and half of this year he’s been the QB making this team relevant. You would think we had San Francisco defense, a cowboys running game, and a Patriots special teams. Tampa wasted the years with jameis with the worst horrendous defense, breathtakingly bad special teams, And beyond mediocre running game. It’s a perfect set up for a blame jameis. I’m not saying he doesn’t carry blame but my God have you guys watched the games over the last five years and you guys are full on pissed at jameis. The guy likely played a quarter of the season playing with a broken thumb and torn meniscus. I’m honestly over this discussion and wish they would just make a decision and move on.
February 14th, 2020 at 2:20 pm
What’s the cost??? A 3rd, 4th or 5th round pick???
That’s the determining factor, in my eyes…But TB will not be the only team to inquire about Dalton’s availability…So, CIN in the cat-bird seat on trade value as Dalton $17.5M cap # is 50% the top QB1 2020 salaries. (Is he worth a 2nd to someone??? Just may be, once the FA market sets itself. (Brady/DAK/Brees will want to get PAID for 1 more go around, before the CBA resets market again in 2021.)
I think we can all agree the organization cannot go into the draft w/o a Plan A already in place & no guarantee of getting the rookie QB they want…Especially w/ a FO & coaching staff in “Win Now or Else” mode. So, Dalton makes sense…Especially if JW3 is allowed to walk in FA.
February 14th, 2020 at 2:24 pm
Sign Jameis!!!!!!!
Panther, please sign jdub
February 14th, 2020 at 2:25 pm
Been saying this for quite some time. The only team outside of Tampa where bringing in Jameis is even up for discussion is the Bears and they would want to bring him in to **compete** with Mitchell Trubisky.
That is who Jameis is. He’s the guy you want in camp to compete for a spot to push the guy the team really wants to succeed.
February 14th, 2020 at 2:27 pm
Kansas
I bet the amount of players that leave here and don’t have success is higher than the ones who do
So watch when you say “Most”
February 14th, 2020 at 2:32 pm
People are you listening ? They just gave a list of these top free agent players that came to Tampa Bay that turn out to major busts and you are still looking at Andy Daulton ,P Rivers. I would rather tag Jameis and draft and develop a QB over a years time than to give all of this money to these free agent bust Even the mighty Brady, who knows who he is in another system and at forty something years old
February 14th, 2020 at 2:57 pm
I just can’t believe the Jameis lovers keep up wanting more of the same next year. It got so bad last year that I kept thinking, “When will be the first INT?”
Then as the season drew to an end I didn’t have to wait long. Last 2-3 games it was almost a immediate INT.
How can one enjoy the team we have an emotional attachment to when expecting an INT with almost every passing play? I have to pony up 3-$400 for DTV Season Pass to start the year. I can’t imagine paying X-times more for tickets to see this hot mess. The Bucs have been worse but still more appealing than this.
Resigning Licht last year and signing up Jameis for another run will literally kill this franchise. Half empty stadium in Nov-Dec coming up if they do.
Dump him and spin the wheel.
February 14th, 2020 at 3:04 pm
Jameis is gonna be a Buc for another 12 years, Let’s go!!!!
February 14th, 2020 at 3:10 pm
Dalton – the Bengals have had as much if not more talent than the Bucs under Dalton with the exception of a couple of years, so I’m passing on Dalton for just, maybe one more win
February 14th, 2020 at 3:18 pm
He outed himself as a fool with that last line.
February 14th, 2020 at 3:25 pm
Tampa Bay has never given a QB a second contract. Let that sizzle in your spirit. This is a short term organization with short term fans. We will never be winners with that mind set.
I wish Father Glazer was still here.
I bet you these same fans were ready to run Jon Gruden out of town, only to want him back when he came back to coaching.
Bucs Fans: BA is great, now he is a stale biscuit.
Bucs Fans: We want Mariota, now crickets.
SMH makes no sense.
If I was a new fan, I would find another team just based on the fan base alone.
Oh and ask AB if Belicheat would take a chance on a character guy.
Most you are a joke and wouldn’t know a good team or player if the brought the Lombardi Trophy to your house.
And Yes @LOL mentioned racist because it seems that no matter how good or bad Jameis is, some of you’s will always go against him for no reason.
Somebody: Jamies is the MVP of Superbowl 55,
Bucs Fans: Yeah but he wouldn’t let anybody else hold the trophy. Get him out of here.
Media: “White QB name” just killed a person while driving drunk. and he has not has a winning season in 6 years with a good team around him
Bucs Fan: Let’s bring him in, he has to be better than Jameis.
Just dumb if you ask me. and by the way I am not Black.
February 14th, 2020 at 3:32 pm
Weis makes some good points, but Andy Dalton IMHO is not the answer here. I seriously doubt that Jameis is either, but considering all the time and effort invested (wasted?) on him already, I feel we need to find out. If he won’t accept a one year deal for what he made last year, give a bit more or franchise him. Whether Jameis or his agent like it or not is irrelevant. As competitive as Jameis is, I see 0 chance of him holding out if he’s franchised. If he kicks @ss next year, then sign him up! I’d be ecstatic to see him finally become a franchise guy. For your consideration: It’s well documented that Montana was a 3rd round pick, 26 teams passed on Marino and Brady, of course, was pick 199 in the 6th round. But that would never happen today, right? 9 teams passed on Mahomes. Russell Wilson was a 3rd round pick and Dak Prescott was a 4th rounder. So, if you have a coach who knows quarterbacks…
I trust Arians as a coach more than I trust Winston as a QB and Licht as a GM
Also, for the record, Brad Johnson was a 9th round pick. Rich Gannon was a 4th round pick and Kurt Warner & Jeff Garcia were undrafted.
February 14th, 2020 at 3:40 pm
And of course, 23 teams passed on Aaron Rodgers… Drew Brees was the first pick of the 2nd round.

Clue the ‘Rob Reiners’ of JBF.
Don’t the people know Winston is partly responsible for global warming!

Really Dave?
Dapostman has brought it up lately. You must not read all the articles.
February 14th, 2020 at 4:11 pm
I can tell you this:
If they bring back Jameis, “Because there just isn’t anybody better” ala D Smith at LT (Which actually did work out IMO) someone is gonna have to look Lavonte David square in the face and explain why.
Here is a guy who has given everything, only to be disgraced time and time again, lost season after season and now that there are finally players around him on Offense and Defense, you are going to bring back back a guy who just broke HISTORY as a loser.
I’m not saying don’t do it!
I’m saying, How can you be that confident with this guy?
February 14th, 2020 at 4:12 pm
Dapostman – I’ve read most of the articles – the comments I just don’t have the time. What did you bring up?
February 14th, 2020 at 4:28 pm
@Dave,
The comparison of stats of Stafford vs Winston their first 5 years both aged 21-25 and both #1 overall picks.
Stafford has cut his picks down with maturity and how Winston could do the same.
Thanks for bringing that back up. It’s important to see that it has been done even by players stuck in bad franchises.
February 14th, 2020 at 4:32 pm
I really believe we could get Derek Carr for the right price. I think Gruden and the new Las Vegas Raiders want a big name free agent QB to open in their new stadium next season, and although Carr is a fine QB, I think the Raiders want a draw like Brady, Rivers or Brees. I think he could be had for a couple of second round picks ( 1 this year, 1 next year) or maybe a 2 this year and a player like OJ Howard (who Arians can’t seem to find a way to use anyway).
Carr would be an instant upgrade for our offense, his contract is very manageable, and we’d still have a first round pick to use on a top Tackle or Running Back in the draft.
February 14th, 2020 at 4:40 pm
Exactly my point for a few years now…..what team is looking at Winston as an upgrade? And if he’s so talented, wheres all the trade rumors connected to him like you hear with Rivers, Brady, Newton…heck even Dalton has some rumors swirling around him.
Let’s make this even more obvious…..THE OTHER BACK UP QB FOR THE SAINTS AKA THE GIMMICK GUY….HAS MORE DISCUSSION REGARDING HIS AVAILABILITY THEN WINSTON. Think about that, both the back ups for the Saints have more buzz then Winston….and Bridgewater is simply viewed as an effective game manager…that’s it.
If the Bucs stick with Winston its at a huge discount/bargain….and we’ll still draft a QB or bring in a back up. If Winston were as talented as folks on here believe he is….A) He’d have an extension….B) Teams would be drooling at the possibility of acquiring him the way they were with Garrapolo as a back up with the Patriots. He’s not…..he’s a mistake that Licht simply has been afraid to admit. Arians will ultimately be the one to put his name on the line and make the final call. Licht is a joke of a GM…..plain and simple.
February 14th, 2020 at 4:45 pm
Weis is exactly 100% correct on all points.
February 14th, 2020 at 5:38 pm
Just for the record:
By his third season in the NFL, after 13 games total in his first two seasons,
Matt Stafford had >5000 yards, 63.5% completion percentage, 41 TDs (6.2%), and only 16 INTs (2.4%). That season was an example of his potential ceiling.
Please tell me any of JW3’s FIVE seasons to date which suggest a similar high ceiling. Yes, by being more reckless his yards and TDs have gone up this year, but with a concomitant RISE in INTs, including 7 “pick6’s” this year alone. How many games are won by more than seven points, and yet he gifted a free touchdown SEVEN times in one season. But none of those free points contributed to even a single loss this year.

Go Bucs!

February 14th, 2020 at 6:31 pm
tickrdr …what kind of BS or you trying to spin here…you mean to tell me that you can push two different seasons together and come up with anything other than a alternative..creative…asinine way to diminish the goals garnered by Mr. 5,000, well hell let’s just say after the first 2,000 yards MR. 5,000 throws for in the 2020 season, that he magically becomes Mr. 7,000 !!!
February 14th, 2020 at 6:33 pm
Where is NDOG when there is this much opposition to his point of views?
Oh, that’s right. Invisible
February 14th, 2020 at 6:46 pm
Jameis Winston will never not throw stupid interceptions. I dont know what else to say at this point. How many first pass or first possession interceptions does this guy have to throw before people quit burying their head in the sand.
He threw for 5000 yards. Good for him. He also threw 30 freaking interceptions with 7 being returned for touchdowns. Only the thickest headed idiots can possibly be silly enough to ignore that. Is Arians running a somewhat high risk offense? Yes. Newsflash, most of Winston’s picks were on passes that had to go no further than 10 or 15 yards in the air. He threw the majority of his picks on some of the most routine routes in the game. He’s late on every single curl and comeback. He cant throw timing routes, which is exactly what Arians passing game is predicated on.
February 14th, 2020 at 6:53 pm
Thanks, Tickrdr for the trip down memory lane. Blame it on the mirror,or better yet blame it on Jameis. Thinking he doesn’t have to listen to coaches is just one reason we have suffered through so many embarrassing losses. There is no swagger in that ,only dejection and quite possibly rejection. 100 % agree with your posts.
February 14th, 2020 at 7:08 pm
I just can’t believe the stuff you guys believe. It truly is amazing that you people believe Carr, Bridgewater, Dalton, Rivers or even a 42 year old Brady is better than Jameis. I not looking to fight with anyone tonight but I seriously am blown away with how little people understand football and the difference between what players are asked to do.
But I really can’t blame you cause you are convinced over and over and over and over again by the media that Jameis is the devil. People post on this site daily that anyone would be better than Jameis. I mean think about that for a minute. How little can one understand about football to actually type that? You guys are unbelievable, you really really are
February 14th, 2020 at 7:15 pm
So Matt Stafford’s other 4 seasons were so bad that his 1 great year balanced out his stats with Winston’s.
You guys make it too easy.
February 14th, 2020 at 7:31 pm
DaPostman,
Winston should be let go in FA. Too many turnovers. Look at NFL history. Over the last 59 years the team that wins the turnover margin wins the game.
That’s too easy to see. Hats so hard to see Jameis has the worst turnover problem in the league. Awful. Disgusting. Terrible for a number one overall pick after five years.
February 14th, 2020 at 7:32 pm
Ndog,
Those QBs could easily be better. Less turnovers, that’s why. Come on dude! Wake up and smell the losing. Turnover margin is a MFer. And Jameis is god awful at turnovers. It’s naive to think another QB couldn’t win more, with less stats, less turnovers.
February 14th, 2020 at 8:51 pm
@BigHog and Dapostman:
Matt Stafford early career stats:
2009: 10 games ; 13 TDs ; 20 INTs
2010: Only 3 games ; 6 TDs ; 1 INT
2011: 16 games ; 5038 yards ; 41 TDs ; 16 INTs
2012: 16 games ; 4967 yards ; 20 TDs ; 17 INTs
2013: 16 games ; 4650 yards ; 29 TDs ; 19 INTs
Total: 61 games ; 109 TDs ; 73 INTs
At least one and probably two of those years suggested the steady improvement expected of a “franchise QB”, especially one chosen with the 1st overall pick of the NFL draft. How has Winston similarly improved?

February 14th, 2020 at 9:35 pm
Let me say this all them hating jw he still will have more money then yall will ever have in your life time ok and the kicker lost 5 games and the ref lost 1 now and that up they would have made the playoffs see the dam team dont want to pay no running back that 1 and 2 we need a upgrade on the FS and Left CB and the RT and some good 2nd string for each position That’s how jw will lead the bucs o say jw ask for a 1 yr contract get out there and shine like that wr who took over when Evan’s and the wide out got hurt his pay and stock went up in the last 3 games so if the bucs coaches or someone good with them or the GMread this post because letting him good will come back and hunt yall it always does this win win deal this way because if shine it will cost you to keep him if he dont it will not cost you but 1 yr on what yall agreed too to easy
February 14th, 2020 at 9:45 pm
Tick,
You can spin it anyway you want but the numbers are pretty damn close.
Winston tds 121 int 88
Stafford tds 109 int 73
Pass yds per game were about 10 yards difference. I believe Calvin Johnson also set the league record for yards during the 2012 season at 1900+. As good as Mike Evans is he ain’t no Calvin Johnson.

I still believe in Jameis…
He did alot with less in the 5 years he’s been here; sure he’s had receivers but that’s about it…Hate to sound like a broken record but this kid has never had a good defense, never had a good kicker, never had a good offensive line, he’s had a thousand yard rusher once as a rookie, and I won’t even get into the coaches he’s had…
He’s definitely not perfect but half of the turnovers he’s had in his career are just bonehead decisions, the other half is a result of him trying to compensate for a defense that can’t stop a nose bleed and a kicker who couldn’t make a kick if his life depended on it…
Alot of you guys the get on here and trash Jameis’ have selective memories; there have been plenty times were Winston played great and we still find a way to lose…Is it still his fault we lost…
But whatever to eaches own, everyone is entitled to their own opinion…just my 2 cents, y’all have a nice night…
February 14th, 2020 at 11:17 pm
Who’ s going to say, ‘Jameis is our guy?’
Haven’t found one speculation where one fan base is excited to have Jameis as their qb…
Not one sign of any team who would covet JW… He is suppose to be so great and all..
So is it that 32 NFL teams just don’t understand football or could it actually be that JWs resume reveals he is a QB to beware of….
February 15th, 2020 at 8:39 am
I just wish they would make some decisions
February 15th, 2020 at 7:14 pm
ndog is a Winston bot. IGNORE.
February 16th, 2020 at 6:20 pm
I keep asking the question: who is going to pay JW anywhere close to $27 M / year? He should be begging for a franchise tag.
February 17th, 2020 at 7:58 am
3 years 75m w incentives for additional 15m. JW is our guy.
