Reaction To Shaq’s Offer
February 11th, 2020Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett raised a lot of eyebrows across the NFL this week after Joe posted Shaq’s words from an interview with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, heard exclusively on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio, when Shaq said he may take a lesser offer from the Bucs to stay in Tampa.
Of course, this rocked the set of “Good Morning Football,” seen weekday mornings on NFL Network, co-hosted by everyone’s it girl, Kay Adams, and fellow co-hosts Nate Burleson, closet Bucs fan Peter Schrager and a special guest.
Burleson explained dudes taking discounts to stay with their teams happens more than folks realize.
Schrager believes Shaq’s agent, oily Drew Rosenhaus, likely had a stroke when he read Shaq’s words on JoeBucsFan.com.
And the breakfast table’s special guest co-host, noted football expert and former World Series-winning pitcher C.C. Sabathia, believes this is a huge deal for the Bucs because, as Sabathia explained, most players only give hometown discounts to teams expected to make a postseason run. The Bucs aren’t there yet.
At least, not to most outsiders. What does Shaq know the rest of us don’t?
You can watch the full discussion in the video below.

he knows common sense. He had a great year, no doubt. but he is giving Tampa the thumbs up that he wants to play here which goes a LONG way in contract negotiations.
Oily may want more, but he could give 2 $hits about careers. Sound like Shaq has his head on his shoulders.
I negotiate salaries daily BTW and someone who wants the job will get the job and the deal…maybe longer term and a little less, but more stability is the trade off. He knows it could be a one year wonder w/o JPP and vea and the crew……smart man. pay him.
February 11th, 2020 at 3:55 pm
Its probably just like that…I’ll take a discount but JPP has to be here…
February 11th, 2020 at 3:56 pm
shaq knows he aint going anywhere….and those words came str8 from the horses mouth, BA….
im thinking he’ll take less to play with JPP and SUH…..thats a no brainer…..
GO BUCS!!!!!
February 11th, 2020 at 3:58 pm
Compared to the picture, it looks like C.C has dropped some lb’s. I hardly recognized him at first. Good for him!
February 11th, 2020 at 4:00 pm
Excellent take on Shaq’s situation Robert. Used to negotiate a lot also (past tense) and always believed that the best approach was to create a ‘Win-Win Situation’. Always better in the long run IMO.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:01 pm
Why not stay with the Bucs? They have as good a chance at the playoffs as anyone.
That is until that first JayMiss Pick – 6 rocks you back to reality.
Peace, out.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:06 pm
And why shouldn’t he? The Bucs gave him the opportunity to start and with that he was able to have a storybook season. That has to account for something.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:18 pm
If $15M a yr is a discount….Sign me up too.
Shaq doubled his career earnings by coming to Tampa as a FA, last yr.
His next contract will offer him & his family “generational” security.
Why uproot the family, if they are happy hanging by the bay???
February 11th, 2020 at 4:21 pm
Shaq knows he will get “life-changing money”…….he also knows that the Buc defense is on the cusp of something big……he also knows that doing his part to help will assure more players are signed.
Jameis should take a cue.
The days may be over where players don’t want to play here…..
February 11th, 2020 at 4:24 pm
Shaq knows It was a lucky year. No way he’s worth more than 13m a yr. only a stupid person/GM/coach will consider a multi year contract over 13m , that’s right someone like 813buc boi will think that.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:30 pm
I think you nailed it TBBF. Shaq knows this defense can be special.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:33 pm
Adrnagy- even if it was a fluke, doesn’t mean he can’t capitalize off of it. Wouldn’t you? I sure as heck would.
I think he knows he is gonna make more than he ever thought possible. Plus he knows he will be more effective if he has another good pass rusher on the other side. He doesn’t want to cripple the car, that is a team guy.
I hope Jameis also has this line of thinking. We don’t really know if he’s asking 30M+, that’s pure speculation and nothing more.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:34 pm
Cripple the cap**
February 11th, 2020 at 4:39 pm
Shaq knows he probably won’t get that many sacks again and this is probably the only time to get a rich deal. Once in a lifetime……… then again in Bucs world, you have a good season and you get called a Hall of Famer or legendary
He is a bigger conundrum than Jameis. I rather keep JW than Barrett. Just a personal preference because I know what JW does
February 11th, 2020 at 4:43 pm
“I rather keep JW than Barrett”
…..shakes head and leaves the room…..
February 11th, 2020 at 4:54 pm
I love when people start saying what other people should do with their money… This is an interesting story to me because I live in the North East and I was just reviewing my taxes and saying man I should go back to Florida so that I can get out of all these taxes. Bucs definitely have a nice competitive advantage with the taxes. New York area loves to tax the heck out of people especially the more well off. I wouldn’t come anywhere near this area if given the options with work.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:58 pm
Robert
…..shakes head and leaves the room…..

Room erupts with applause.
February 11th, 2020 at 5:33 pm
Yeah.. I think he is referring to paying no State Income tax in Florida. A team in say NY, PA, CA the base Salary would have to be higher to bring home the same $$’s in Fl.
February 11th, 2020 at 5:44 pm
Don’t betray him, Licht, by lowballing him. If you do, and he leaves, you will be run out of town.
Pay the man what he deserves.
February 11th, 2020 at 5:49 pm
I can promise you this- he’s not taking less so they can pay Jameis more.
February 11th, 2020 at 5:50 pm
Shaq knows what we all know… that the defense was playing like a top 10 defense the second half of the season
February 11th, 2020 at 5:52 pm
If he takes less money to stay, they need to put his face on the stadium. Who knows? He may have commercial advertising deals in the works too.
February 11th, 2020 at 5:56 pm
They will lowball Shaq and offer him way less than his market value and then they’ll overpay for Jameis.
It’s a Buc’s thing.
February 11th, 2020 at 6:08 pm
I didn’t know you could take a hometown discount on the Franchise Tag…oh wait you can’t. FRANCHISE HIM
February 11th, 2020 at 6:18 pm
Leave the stupid winston comments out of this one, hes the only free agent BA said isn’t going anywhere. When you break a guys sack record in your teams ring of honor and said guy is a hall of famer it matters and 19 sacks is not luck. Whether he takes a discount or not is irrelevant. He should be resigned even if it’s on par with big time sack artists in the league. If JPP is worth 13 million and the franchise tag is 17 If he got 18-19 per year so what. Winston wont sign a team friendly deal so he will get franchised then given his walking papers when he throws 30 picks again in 2020.
February 11th, 2020 at 6:30 pm
If I was him I would wait to see if JW is coming back. If they let Jameis walk and draft some scrub rookie QB in the 1st or 2nd round and bring in some game manager or AARP member QB then the team is in rebuild mode. If that is the case he should get out ASAP because the team will be circling the drain for another 5 years minimum.
February 11th, 2020 at 6:37 pm
Tom S … Would much rather see the Bucs & Shaq work out a long-term deal. The franchise tag is about $16 mil this year and Shaq is worth that. Next year it’s bound to be higher. His skillset fits beautifully into Todd Bowles’ 3-4 hybrid defense, so giving him job security now will pay off for us down the road.
Pepsi … Totally agree with you that our defense was playing like a Top-10 defense the 2nd half of last season. Even though we lost the last 2 games, I thought those were the defense’s 2 best games. Both Houston & Atlanta had excellent offenses that were playing very well at the time, but our defense only allowed 38 points TOTAL (after you subtract the Pick-6 in each game). And they did that despite our offense having 6 OTHER giveaways (besides the 2 Pick 6) that resulted in a number of short field situations. They limited the 14th-ranked Texans to 1 TD & 3 FGs (16 points), then limited the 13th-ranked Falcons to 1 TD & 5 FGs (22 points). That’s quite impressive for a team that wasn’t fighting for a playoff spot.
February 11th, 2020 at 6:49 pm
TDTB … No way that BA will put this team into ‘rebuild mode’. He accepted a crappy hand when he signed on here (horrible salary Cap situation, JPP accident, terrible 2018 defense, etc, etc) BUT … he made some very shrewd acquisitions (Barrett, Suh, etc) AND drafted very well IMO. Took awhile to get some of the youngsters experience and to get it all to ‘gel’, but the future looks bright IF we can re-sign our UFAs.
And he won’t accept “some scrub rookie QB” or “some game manager or AARP member QB” running this offense. You don’t become known as the NFL’s ‘Quarterback Whisperer’ by doing things like that.
February 11th, 2020 at 6:54 pm
Shaq is worth going rate…$16-18M even. And he performs.
Think about the clown who DID NOT get it done…Jameis L. Winston. The MOST Winston will get even if they need to keep his sorry azz is $14-16M. Hardly seems fair to Shaq. So bring in Rivers for $25M, draft a QB, and send Winston’s stuff off to back up Deshaun Watson, Russel Wilson, or some other REAL QB. Shaq rocks. Pay up!
February 11th, 2020 at 6:55 pm
11 million to SHAQ A LOT m…11 million to SHU…11 million to JPP …everybody happy …no jealousy …let’s go to work and bye the way 21.5 million to Mr. 5,000 …leader of the pack!!
February 11th, 2020 at 6:59 pm
It’s really funny to see fans counting money of the guy actually doing the work as anyone is qualified to say his worth. Dude produced and you have no idea if 16 million is low balling him. Stfu with that trying to be cheap with every player possible. While other teams are focused on playoffs you jokers talking about cap and what to pay guys who produce lol and your trying to make fun of the bucs mentality so weird
February 11th, 2020 at 7:01 pm
Joe … Just saw the greatest 3-Rnd Mock Draft I could every imagine (from CBS Sports today). Would love to see this happen …
o Rnd 1 – Tristan Wirfs, OLine – Iowa (6’5″ & 322 lbs)
o Rnd 2 – J.K. Dobbins, RB – Ohio State (5’10” & 217 lbs)
o Rnd 3 – Bradlee Anae, Edge – Utah (6’3″ & 265 lbs)
Pick up another OLineman, plus a WR & a couple others and that’d be an awesome draft that could really close some holes for us.
February 11th, 2020 at 7:01 pm
Pewter, some folks may be in the business.
For example, you worth is $20, and that’s after the lawn is mowed.
February 11th, 2020 at 7:07 pm
TouchDownTampaBay so what about the World Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Are they circling the drain after five years? Oh yeah right they just won a Lombardi trophy in what year of Mahomes contract?
February 11th, 2020 at 7:11 pm
Pewter Power … I’m surprised at your take on ‘counting money’ but I definitely agree with you that Shaq produces & is worth every penny that it takes to keep him. With so many UFAs to re-sign though, Bucs have no choice but to be ‘prudent’ with their salary Cap $$$. They have the option of franchise tagging Shaq for $16 mil, but I personally HOPE they don’t have to exercise that option; I’d much rather see a long-term deal.
I guess we just have different takes on the impact of the salary Cap. Bucs struggled last year (RBs, young Secondary, OLinen, DEPTH) because of, oh ya, a very crappy salary Cap situation. BA did a great job IMO with what he had to work with, but he came into a mess. Contrary to what some seem to think, it’s not REALLY any better this year. Matter of fact, in some ways it’s worse.
February 11th, 2020 at 7:28 pm
Had a lot of fun watching him play this year!
February 11th, 2020 at 7:31 pm
Yeah that’s the answer,we’ve been looking for a double digit sacker for how long ,then when we finally find him let’s not resign him so we can give way to much money to 30 interception guy in a contract year. That would be the definition of a Nice life! GO BUCS
February 11th, 2020 at 7:33 pm
Rusty, how is it working on for the Jags (Bortles), Chicago (Trubisky), Cardinals (Rosen just two years ago), Cleveland (Baker). For every Majomes you can name I can name 10 busts.
February 11th, 2020 at 7:35 pm
So yeah, basically a 90% chance the fourth best QB in this weak QB class draft will be a bust. The Bucs went 30 years without a franchise QB. Amazes that any Bucs fan would act like finding a good QB is easy.
February 11th, 2020 at 7:39 pm
It comes to 2 things – low taxes and sunshine.
February 11th, 2020 at 7:44 pm

Very Good point Jean!!!
February 11th, 2020 at 7:53 pm
I think Shaq may see some of what the Broncos had when they signed Manning….with some competence at the position, you can go pretty far with good defense and game management. Manning’s arm was shot at that point in his career and he certainly didn’t have Evans, Godwin, Howard, Brate, Perriman to throw to, yet they went to the SB 2x….winning one.
February 11th, 2020 at 7:55 pm
Drew Rosenhaus and the Bucs have a long history…
“Stage One of Errict Rhett’s career resurrection is under way. The road wasn’t supposed to be this bumpy. He splashed onto the NFL scene with fanfare after getting drafted out of Florida in the second round in 1994. But, two years into his four-year contract, Rhett decided to hold out of Tampa Bay’s training camp for a new deal.
The strategy backfired on Rhett and his then-agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The Buccaneers refused to buckle, and Rhett’s 1996 holdout stretched into the seventh week of the regular season.
Rhett played for the final nine games and still led Tampa Bay in rushing, but because of the length of his holdout, Rhett’s third year of service was nullified. Eventually, he fired Rosenhaus. He then played sparingly behind Dunn in 1997 for $396,000, and will play for $450,000 this year in what is actually his fifth season but is recognized as his fourth.”
February 11th, 2020 at 8:36 pm
Someone is trolling trollmax with that positive comment…
February 11th, 2020 at 8:44 pm
Mr. Reality lol in the business here on the joebucs comment section? Lol I got nothing lol idiot but anyway everyone has to deal with salary cap like Atlanta with like 5 million to spend but generally the teams have won something. Cant expect everyone to take a discount you wanna keep. Chris Godwin had one year of big money production but everyone wanted to extend him now…..ok but talk out of both sides of your face.
Bottom line if he didnt want to take a hometown discount they’d still pay him.
February 11th, 2020 at 9:44 pm
Shaq not only sees the playoffs in the future, but he knows the team and fans want and need him. That means a lot.
Also, he’s being taught leadership by the great JPP and Suh, right along with White.
I bet this team has had a complete culture upgrade since Arians arrived.
I knew nothing about Shaq when he first arrived, but man, I really like the guy now. Hope they give him a 5-6 year deal…and change the uniforms so I can buy his jersey!
February 11th, 2020 at 10:59 pm
I posted on this site over a month ago that barrett had already said he would take less to stay with the bucs and to keep this dline together. Why is this news now? Thats right because this is the most uneducated fan base in america.

Shaq is the type of player every team is looking for, and doesn’t come around often. He was an under utilized free agent, we gave him a chance to shine and produce. He did everything he was asked and proved himself in every way, he proved in big fashion he has what it takes to be not only successful but Dominant. What you don’t want to do now is create distrust with him, he doesn’t want to be Tagged he wants a lucrative deal but also a team friendly deal, stating he’s willing to take less money to stay. YOU PAY THE MAN!!! simple as that.
