Two More Years, Says Philip Rivers
February 11th, 2020A man who could be the Buccaneer’s next quarterback served up candid comments about his future in an exclusive interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Recently-booted Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers erased any doubt (again) about his desired future and explained where his motivation lies.
Here’s a snippet:
“I can say for certain that if I’m playing, it’s a two-year maximum,” Rivers said. “Whoever the suitors are, I think that would be their hope as well. Because you never know how it goes. Shoot, if we stink it up after one year, I’m probably done. If we play really good, they’ll probably want to go again.
“Certainly you want a chance to win a championship, but it’s not just about that. If you told me right now, ‘You’re going to play for two years, and you’re going to be good. But y’all will not win a Super Bowl. Will you still play?’ Heck yeah, I’ll still play.
“So it’s not like it’s a Super Bowl or nothing. But if it’s a team where it’s going to be tough sledding and they’re two years away from even having a chance, and they led the league in most sacks given up or something, then it’s, ‘I don’t think so, guys.’”
Do our beloved Buccaneers fit Rivers’ parameters? That depends how you view the team.
But for those wondering, the Bucs allowed 47 sacks last season, 11th-most in the NFL. Obviously, they also dropped back to pass a ton, and Bucco Bruce Arians himself blamed a chunk of those sacks on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.
Carolina and Miami (teams linked to Rivers) tied for the NFL lead in sacks allowed last season (58), and Rivers’ Chargers allowed just 34.

“The stars aligned” for BA to get his staff. Now they will align again and we will get a competitive, veteran QB- on an affordable deal. Playoffs here we come!

Bucs being 11th is definitely not all on the oline..
‘Bucco Bruce Arians himself blamed a chunk of those sacks on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.’
When your qb has a tendency to hold the all to long, that often is the result…
Rivers is known for getting the ball out quickly so that will only go in the offenses favor.

…and then there’s still this
PatriotsWire: 2/10/2020
Report: Tom Brady will test free agency in March

Rivers to Eason, let the transition begin
February 11th, 2020 at 10:22 am
Is it legal in the NFL for a QB to be using a walker on the field of play??
February 11th, 2020 at 10:29 am
Amen @Robert. #Bradyorbust.
Brady > Carr > Bridgewater > Tannehill > Rivers > Winston.
(Brees back with Saints or retired, Prescott tagged/signed in DAL).
February 11th, 2020 at 10:35 am
Don’t like it! As Joe’s said many times, be careful of what you wish for. Would Brady be an improvement over Winston – yes! Rivers, not so much.
February 11th, 2020 at 10:45 am
So what that means is that we have to draft a QB, ready to go in two years. Just what many of us suggested.
February 11th, 2020 at 11:15 am
I can really see this working out I hope it happens Joe
February 11th, 2020 at 11:35 am
Please….. whatever vet QB comes here… please, please just stipulate that you’ll only sign if we agree to change our hideous, losing uniforms.

I thought we were tired of paying players to retire early here. Rivers looking for his retirement check, so is Tom. Rivers literally said its not about the Superbowl, which means im trying to cash a check.
Their careers are over. Learning a new system and WR tendencies to retire two years later. They have no interest in coming in putting it all on the line every week. If it was a situation like Brett Farve had Id be more enthusiastic about it because Farve was pissed he was forced out of Green Bay. He had something to prove and laid it on the line for NYJ and Minnesota. Same with Peyton Manning.
Brady and Phillip aren’t being forced out. New England wants Brady back. Im sure the Chargers wanted Rivers back too however not at his asking price and we are the suckers willing to pay like always. They don’t have anything to prove they just want a check and pack it in.

He would be a fool to even attempt to try and fill the shoes of Mr. 5,000 !!
February 11th, 2020 at 11:43 am
I love this plan, this guy is a mature competitor and tough as nails, great leader and gets the ball out quickly. Ideal role model for drafted QB sitting and learning from a great winning vet, we won’t need him to be a long term answer, just a short term bridge with an improved chance of playoffs over the next two seasons, BA knows what he is doing !
Go Bucs !
February 11th, 2020 at 11:45 am
at this rate he’ll be mr 5,000 turnovers
February 11th, 2020 at 11:46 am
No mobility means he would get sacked a lot from his blind side!! GET Mr. 5,000 signed now and be done with all this puff n fluff!!
February 11th, 2020 at 11:48 am
the Bucs allowed 47 sacks last season, 11th-most in the NFL.
boy….the way the JWapologist were talking, you wouldve thought we were ranked dead last…..lol…
yet another excuse thrown out the window….lol…
GO BUCS!!!!!

Rivers is a shot fighter. Why are people thinking Rivers is coming here at 15 million a year? BTW Jameis is supposed to ask for 30 million. Jameis knows he’s not getting it, but it is good business to start high and work your way down.
Rivers had weapons in LA. 2 good receivers, 2 good backs who can catch out the backfield, and a tight end who produced more than OJ Howard. Despite all that, the Chargers went 5-11.
I’m indifferent on Jameis leaving or staying although I believe he would be better off with a change of scenery.
This offense will get the QB sacked a lot, because of the long developing plays with every receiver running routes.

Robert …get real guy!! Your reminding me of 45!!
February 11th, 2020 at 11:57 am
I’d give up the #14 pick for Stafford. He still has 6-9 goods years left. and if he pans out if is worth a first round pick. Detroit has the #3 pick and can get any QB they desire except Burrow. Thoughts?
February 11th, 2020 at 12:14 pm
Stafford’s back injury makes him a risky option to pursue.
There’s a case to be made that DET should look to draft his replacement @ #3, if there is ANY trepidation w/ lingering back issues (post-surgery).
No doubt that Stafford’s a good one when healthy….But knowing TB gave up 47sacks in 2019…Would he remain healthy playing for TB??? Too big a risk to take, IMO.
February 11th, 2020 at 12:14 pm
Dewey…Stafford coming off multiple fractures in his back, age 31/32…had several other past injuries, plus concussions I believe too. He can sling it, but can be interception prone at times.
Carr is younger, age 27, healthier, could easily be coached up more by BA. Brady’s best, Stafford’s not bad but would cost us at least a 2nd rounder. Carr would cost less once Gruden gets his QB. Bridgewater in there too. Stafford would put points up.
February 11th, 2020 at 12:20 pm
I’d be happy with Carr if Gruden gives him up.
February 11th, 2020 at 12:23 pm
Right on junkei and cat. 20 minutes after i posted this Cowherd is talking about the Lions drafting Tua at 3.maybe I should play the lotto tonight.
February 11th, 2020 at 12:32 pm
Holy h3ll..when you stop and look at it, there are SO MANY variations that could happen at QB all across the league!! So many, and many laying in the weeds too, like going after Taysom Hill some might. Like no NFL offseason ever.
Man the fantasy football implications by May will be drastically different perhaps.
February 11th, 2020 at 12:36 pm
Bucs need to sign one of the veteran QB’s that’s available, draft their future starter, and say goodbye to America’s Turnovers Machine, Mr. Pick 6, Jameis Winston.
February 11th, 2020 at 1:25 pm
My only question, especially since Rivers has announced a 2 year time limit (or less if things don’t go well) is the idea that it’s all for the love of the game and the fact that right now he feels he can handle it. Personally that feels like BS to me. (this same feeling goes for Brady) No body wants to go to a perennial loser and spend the twighliht of his career getting the sh*t beat out of him. I can see Rivers going to the Colts possibly, a team with playoff potential. Going to a team at 37 when it’s obvious to all that your skills are beginning to diminish and a team still in a rebuilding mode who will cut a 5000 yard passer who threw 30 INT’s and was only 26 feels like a really stupid decision to me.
February 11th, 2020 at 1:38 pm
Whoever it is, just don’t over pay. Sign up this defense, get a RT and sign a QB with whatever is left over less the rookie $’s.
In BA I Trust!
February 11th, 2020 at 2:45 pm
I was hoping we would find a Mulatto. Think about it: Mahommes, Russel Wilson, D Watson, Dak, Kyler Murray, Jacoby Brissett. They all got dads athleticism but the fat white moms brains.
February 11th, 2020 at 2:54 pm
813bucboi – The sack total would be much higher if Winston didnt make things happen with his feet and extend plays multiple times a game.
February 11th, 2020 at 3:00 pm
I read in my paper today (yes, I still read one- -you guys should try) that rivers is a FA that maxed out his ints last year at– —(wait for it)—-20!
The most he has ever thrown in one year was 20. How does that compare to our hero, Famous Jameis?
BTW, the “Jameis for HOF March” organized by BigHog has been cancelled. Ndog was sick and BigHog didn’t want to march alone.
February 11th, 2020 at 3:04 pm
I find his confidence underwhelming.
February 11th, 2020 at 3:11 pm
puff n fluff!!
They Don’t get more puff n fluff than Winston !!!!!!!!!!
Eating >WWWWWWWWs
February 11th, 2020 at 4:15 pm
I don’t care if it Mr Rivers for 2 years or Mr Pick-6 for one more, just so we draft a future quarterback. The last thing I want is Mr Pick-6 with a long term deal and Ryan “nobody knows if I can play “ Griffin the only 2 qb’s on the roster. That being said, “In BA I trust”. If he’s willing to risk his reputation on Mr Pick-6, who am I to argue.
February 11th, 2020 at 4:47 pm
Dewey: not our first round pick, maybe rounds 2-3?
February 11th, 2020 at 8:09 pm
Why would the Bucs want a worst version of Winston?
