After a year’s worth of knowledge, if you were Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, how would you draft?
Over at CBS Sports, Chris Trapasso decided to redo the 2019 draft based on how rookies played last season. There are a couple of interesting elements for Bucs fans.
The Bucs picked linebacker Devin White at No. 5. In his rear-view mirror draft, Trapasso wouldn’t have drafted White at No. 5 (neither would Joe have, but that’s another story).
Trapasso instead selected Mississippi State guard Elgton Jenkins, who started for the playoff-bound Packers protecting Aaron Rodgers.
Even with Earl Watford and Alex Cappa playing decently well at guard in 2019, neither look like cornerstone players. Jenkins did in Green Bay as a rookie, displaying established veteran type sturdiness in pass protection.
A guard at No. 5 is awfully high. Look, even Quenton Nelson, largely regarded as one of the best guards in the game wasn’t picked until No. 6. Is Trapasso trying to say Jenkins is better than Nelson? That seems a stretch.
At No. 7 in Trapasso’s redraft, he has the Jags picking current Bucs corner Jamel Dean, who was a third-round draft pick.
Dean wasn’t a regular starter until midway through the season for the Buccaneers but was ridiculously productive over the final two months of the season. The explosive leaper with awesome speed registered 17 pass breakups with two picks in what amounted to a grand total of eight games.
Trapasso added had the Jags picked Dean, they would have had their replacement for Jalen Ramsey, who was traded to the Rams. Now that’s high praise!
Also of note in Trapasso’s redraft, White drops out of the first round.

Dean was a third rounder and is regarded by many as the best CB out of all the rookies last year. My concern with him is his health. If he can stay healthy he could be an all-pro type player.
White had a rough and unlucky start but the way he finished showed he could also be an elite player. He’s got all the traits you could want. He just has to keep learning the game.

I met a guy at a bar last night who knew a guy who once played college football and then worked in the front office of a major NFL franchise cleaning toilets. And HE says that we WAY over drafted at #5 last year and should have stretched for back-up center Whodat Whocareseus out of EST Bumfkk U.
That’s the quality of this content.

White & Vea together will form the cornerstones for the middle of our defense for years to come.
Dean, SMB & Edwards along with Davis & Whitehead will shortly give us one of the best Secondaries in the NFL.

This does not take into account that the young rooks and second year players actually developed under a new coaching staff. That was the key and will be going forward. I hear the Bucs are seeing what it would take to go from #14 to #1, mmmm….

I really like our draft……and I love the Devin White pick…..looks like we got a steal with Dean…..you can thank BA & Bowles…..not Licht for this draft.
Still waiting for Nelson, Gay & Miller to turn out…..If any of them do, it will be a spectacular draft.

Jason Licht’s good draft and we want to redraft. Why?
Dean was not a 2nd round pick, he was a third round pick. Jason traded an early third for 2 late thirds and turned them into Edwards and Dean instead of the stiff Darrell Henderson.
Who besides Chris Trapasso thought Elgton Jenkins was a cornerstone player?
Jenkins played the same as Alex Cappa all year. Neither a stiff but neither a stud.

These re-drafts are dumber than the mock drafts after the Super Bowl and before the combine. Re-draft after 3 years. That is when you see who really was a bust and steal in the draft. Dean will probably go down as one of the best steals from the 2019 draft.

Drafting a guard in the top 15 shouldn’t even be a thing… including Nelson. John Hannah might be the greatest guard to ever play. One Super Bowl, at the end of his career. Tons of last place finishes. Guard and Sam LB are the two least important starters on a football team.
When left tackles taken in round one bust at left tackle, they can move to right. And if that doesn’t work they can move to guard. When a guard, like Jonathan Cooper or Chance Warmack, can’t cut it at guard, they get cut from the league. Coincidentally, both of those bust were taken in the top half of the same draft and were both out of the league a very short time later.

One point. Look at history.. the Packers have ALWAYS been great at developing O linemen. Until this last year, our coaches could develop an omelet. Many second, third, and later picks have ended up starting. So I really wouldn’t assume any O lineman they draft that becomes a good or great player would have done so here.

Couldn’t disagree more with this guys assessment. I was leaning more toward Allen at 5 but White proved me wrong. He got hurt early but in the back end of the season he was a total play maker. I agree with people usually you don’t take a MLB at 5 but White proved to me he isn’t an average and won’t be an average MLB. The guy closes to the ball quickly, forces a ton of game changing plays. I loved the way he plays the game and he is only a rookie. He has a real chance to be a great one 10 plus years from now.

I don’t follow redrafts, they are completely ridiculous, especially like this one after one year. Remember when, after one year, everyone thought RG3 was a Hall of Famer? I saw the headline of one that said that Jamel Dean was redrafted with the 7th overall pick. Okay.

This Trapasso dude makes every one of those PFF guys look like a combination of Ron Wolf and Bill Belichick. A gosh darned guard over White & Allen? He is either an incompetent moron, was extremely high while writing this, or he hates the Bucs and just threw spit at the wall. He said nice things about Dean so it must be one of the first two or maybe both. Geesh, I wanted Allen over White, but White was still worthy of a first round pick all day long.

Considering that not one single player from the Bucs 2016 draft is still on the roster, I think I would start the draft revisiting there.

If we are talking redraft go back and look at the entire 2016 draft. That entire draft class is gone except for Ryan Smith and he is nothing more than a special teams player which they spent a 4th round pick on. So I can’t say I trust Licht’s draft process unless BA and Todd are giving their input.

Maybe but Dalton Risner PFF grade was about the same as Alex Cappa’s. They both played guard and Cappa got his grade despite playing with a broken arm for some of the games. So I feel like we gained more with SMB in the long run.
That being said this is a much better draft for offensive lineman.

Wow! What a crock. Redo a draft after having a full year to evaluate rookies. I’ll bet Trapasso’s selections will change after having two years to consider. Point is, it takes a few years for most players to reach their full potential. Who knows, by the end of next year, White at #5 may look like one of the Buc’s most brilliant moves. Of course, that won’t be difficult considering some of the bonehead moves made by Licht in past drafts. Roberto Aguayo comes to mind.

I’d be more curious redoing the 2015 draft now. With the first pick in the NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select…. (not Winston)
