Caution Flag On Jordan Love
February 8th, 2020Joe must admit to being intrigued by the highlight videos of this Jordan Love.
Love, the strong-armed, mobile but wild quarterback from Utah State, sure looks the part of a gunslinger, just right for a Bucco Bruce Arians offense. In fact, Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report thinks Love has two favorite NFL landing spots, Indianapolis and Tampa Bay.
Interestingly (Joe was going to use the word “ironically” but there is always a sect of folks that freak out whenever they read that word and Joe just doesn’t feel like dealing with that hassle on this first day of XFL football), the Colts and Bucs pick 13th and 14th, respectively, in the first round.
If the Buccaneers don’t re-sign quarterback Jameis Winston, head coach Bruce Arians’ aggressive passing attack could feature Love’s strong arm behind wideouts Mike Evans and Chris Godwin on the perimeter.
For those anxious to run off Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and replace him with Love, better hold on to your hats.
Folks want to run off Jameis for one reason and one reason only, it sure seems. That would be picks. OK, Joe gets it.
Coming out of college as a sophomore, Jameis had 18 interceptions his last year at Florida State, when the ACC was an OK conference (and Jameis also played against SEC talent).
Love? He played in the Mountain West. And as a junior last year, Love tossed 17 picks.
Yikes!
As always, be careful what you wish for.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:04 pm
I have no issues with picks as long as they sling it down field with no regard. Just attack
It’s those Charlie check down boring QBs like Jake Frohmm will be a no go for me
February 8th, 2020 at 12:05 pm
Accuracy and leadership are the two attributes that I value most in a quarterback. Think Brees and Brady. Pass.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:08 pm
It is fine the Bucs aren’t looking to start a rookie in 2020. Dont draft a rookie quarterback if your not intending to start him because that’s what we need with a day 1 pick. D line or o line but I am sick of winston and his turnovers
February 8th, 2020 at 12:08 pm
All of the QBs in this draft have red flags except Joe Burrows. Tua has health issues. Herbert is inconsistent and didn’t play very well in big games. Eason is horrible under pressure. I saw PFF has us taking Eason in round 4. I would be fine with that. But I don’t want to draft a QB any higher than that this year.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:11 pm
Don’t sleep on Anthony Gordon, this dude is not getting the national recognition he deserves. He would be a great mid round pick as a contingency plan if Jameis is franchised and doesn’t grow in year two.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:13 pm
I know you are trying to compare their final years. But come on… he threw 12 in the 2 years before 6 per. It’s Utah State.. I don’t think he is being evaluated
Based on the competition of Utah State. Carson Wentz threw 42 INTs his last 2 years at ND State.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:15 pm
How does Joe Burrow not have a red flag? One productive year and having to transfer to find a starting gig is a red flag. Not saying he will be bad or good. But he doesn’t have a large resume’ to evaluate.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:16 pm
I wish for jameis he will be extended…
February 8th, 2020 at 12:17 pm
If he fell in the draft, say 3rd Round, I’d be interested.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:28 pm
Low completion percentage too
February 8th, 2020 at 12:41 pm
BA has no tolerance for rookie or young QB’ s who can’t read defenses. Zero. Not why he came to Bucs. Irrelevant suggestion by this dude.
Brady.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:43 pm
I knew this already…. pass.
And Joe, you sure are sensitive lately.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:45 pm
@ R.O.
Put on Burrows game film. He has plenty of film to evaluate playing at the highest level possible and winning the National Championship and the Heisman Trophy. Of course he will still have growing pains as he transitions to the NFL but if you actually watch his film you will have a difficult time pointing out any major issues. Plus – no off field issues that I am aware of.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:46 pm
No idea why this guy is considered a 1st round pick.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:47 pm
I’m sure Love will be a fine quarterback in the XFL
February 8th, 2020 at 12:47 pm
Who does Joe like to replace Jameis? After all, it’s possible Jameis and the Bucs may not come to terms…
February 8th, 2020 at 12:58 pm
Alaskabuc- I agree with you Anthony Gordon isn’t getting the pub and would be a great mid round pick if they go the franchise route with Jameis.
I think that a good portion of the fans trying to run Jameis out of town wouldn’t like Love either. They want a ‘real’ Qb like Brady or Brees and he just doesn’t fit their profile.
February 8th, 2020 at 12:59 pm
Las Vegas betting odds point to Rivers playing in Tampa next year.
February 8th, 2020 at 1:00 pm
You better check your sheet before making that decision. Lol
February 8th, 2020 at 1:03 pm
Love is literally just a more athletic version of Jameis, think I’ll stick with the vet who already knows the offense as opposed to the rookie who has to learn it.
February 8th, 2020 at 1:17 pm
Because Utah State is a recruiting hotbed and able to replace multiple skill players like Florida State is right?
6 of his picks were against LSU and Wake Forest just a FYI last time I checked those two aren’t in the MWC.. maybe some context next time before publishing?
February 8th, 2020 at 1:22 pm
Reminds me a lot of the Josh Allen debate.. his skill players leave for the draft or graduate and struggles the following year.
Not saying Love is going turn out like Josh but just a recent comparison.
What I do know is you don’t pay a QB 30 million a year when you got 5 years of data and of being a turnover machine. Transition tag him if you must and hope someone is dumb enough to give you the first round pick
February 8th, 2020 at 1:31 pm
Phillip is the new Voice of Reason.
February 8th, 2020 at 1:32 pm
time to turn the page on the apple turn over
February 8th, 2020 at 1:38 pm
Marine Buc: Agreed on Joe Burrow.
February 8th, 2020 at 1:39 pm
Based on Dwayne Haskins’ salary at pick 14…..$3.6 mil…..I’d say the choice is perhaps Jameis at $27 mil vs Love @ $3.5……
That $24 million added to our cap would go a very long way toward signing all of our FA’s with some left over for another player or two.
If you consider that Jameis was just as good as a rookie as he is now…..then experience isn’t much of a factor……several other rookies have performed well recently.
It’s mostly about the money……
February 8th, 2020 at 1:46 pm
After having been vehemently against it, I am warming to the idea of Phillip Rivers. Last year wasn’t great for him, but it could be a 1-off. He has been great for alot of years. I could see the possibility of a fresh beginning in TB and Arians bringing great things from him. — With this, we would also draft a QB, of course.
I have always been a Jameis fan, and still am. If he is here, i will root for him to post the total numbers that i have always believed he can.
I just dont know anymore if its in the cards for JW to be here. And i am sick of all of our infighting.
I am ready to embrace whatever it may be.
February 8th, 2020 at 2:06 pm
Jacob Eason is a better prospect and has a stronger arm than Love. He would fit Arians offense better. Plus he has 3.4 grade average compared to Love at 1.9
February 8th, 2020 at 2:28 pm
Burrow was also blessed with the best Oline a QB could ever ask for and playmakers everywhere you turn. He’s a good QB but I’m cautiously pumping my brakes on the kid.
February 8th, 2020 at 2:28 pm
Herbert or Eason. Jordan Love has potential, but too many question marks.
February 8th, 2020 at 2:32 pm
We don’t need another doofus at QB like Winston.
February 8th, 2020 at 2:38 pm
If we’re talking late round picks. I would rather have Fromm than Eason. Georiga apparently would too.
Eason is just a big arm not much else.
February 8th, 2020 at 2:46 pm
Let’s get it started, Cardale Jones looking big and strong
February 8th, 2020 at 2:47 pm
As I recall Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell and Jameis Winston coming out of college were All touted with ‘strong arm’… It takes way more than just the ability to throw far to be a quality NFL QB…
Love threw that many ints and he wasn’t playing in the SEC…
He would likely be just another Freeman, Winston, similar type…
Hurts will likely be a much better QB than Love!
February 8th, 2020 at 3:04 pm
Looks like Cole Boozer is the RG for the DC XFL Team.
February 8th, 2020 at 3:11 pm
Yeah I remember when Vince Young, J. Russell broke all their teams Qb records, threw for 5K+ and carried their sorry team to a 9 win season. Great point Tye 😏. They All look the same to you.
February 8th, 2020 at 3:15 pm
Just a FYI for everyone, Jameis just had BOTH Lasik surgery and surgery for a torn meniscus that he had earlier in the year. No word of this from anyone but I guess that’s ok because like usual he won’t get credit for playing through an injury most would miss 2-4 weeks for.
February 8th, 2020 at 3:34 pm
Phillip Says
“What I do know is you don’t pay a QB 30 million a year when you got 5 years of data and of being a turnover machine.”
14.
11.
18.
15.
Those ARE NOT the numbers of a ‘turnover machine.’
Those are the previous 4 years of picks that Winston had.
People are calling Winston a turnover machine based on a one year sample, but then they claim he’s had 5 years to change. If you are going to hold the entire 5 years against him, then you have to admit the facts don’t support the label in the long term.
February 8th, 2020 at 3:42 pm
Stanglassman Says
“Yeah I remember when Vince Young, J. Russell broke all their teams Qb records, threw for 5K+ and carried their sorry team to a 9 win season. Great point Tye 😏. They All look the same to you. ”
I’m slow today. I almost did not recognize you were being sarcastic, lol.
I was like “Vince Young never had 5k yards!”
February 8th, 2020 at 3:46 pm
Bonzai- Great points. You can even take those number back to his FSU days where he had 40/10 TD/INT ratio as a freshman and his Sophomore year it wasn’t too bad considering the youth he had to play with that year.
NDog- Thanks for the info. Great scoop.
February 8th, 2020 at 3:46 pm
Thank you R.O. of course burrow has red flags especially since he didnt do much before this last season because he was a transfer. It’s funny seeing people pretend they knew who he was before last year. Burrow is going from a stacked roster to a really bad team which it makes it hard to resemble the a Heisman year. Mariota and Winston won that award and look at them. Biggest knock on winston coming out of college was how stupid he was off the field, now look at him, he thinks yards per game is the most important stat
February 8th, 2020 at 3:53 pm
23 lost fumbles too Bonsai…
88 interceptions and 23 lost fumbles
111 turnovers in 5 years.
Averages at 22 turnovers a year…
Howis that not a turnover machine?
February 8th, 2020 at 3:56 pm
These XFL players are playing for peanuts. About 3500 a week if they’re active for the game. And about a 2k bonus if they win. Ends up being a little over 50k before taxes. No unions. Can’t leave to NFL if ask until after the season.
February 8th, 2020 at 4:11 pm
If you put the 3 of them in the same uniform, with the same number and wearing helmets, your probably right…. how they play looks the same..
February 8th, 2020 at 4:20 pm
Lamarcus you just named Jameis Winsotn
February 8th, 2020 at 4:57 pm
Not just picks, but a bloated contract that goes with it. And the fact he needs a chaperone in an Uber
February 8th, 2020 at 5:03 pm
Frankly just get a QB that plays at an even level, the ups and downs of JW effect his teammates. Consistency is exactly what the Bucs need.
February 8th, 2020 at 5:24 pm
Winston has other problems than JUST INT
Look at his throws one will be a bullet the next two look like ducks
He stares down his receivers
Not sure he can read a defense either
February 8th, 2020 at 5:26 pm
BY THE WAY Joe
If Jamies was SOOO Great
WHY is a Coach Like Bruce having trouble deciding what do do???
Also I DONT SEE ANYONE TALKING ABOUT GRABBING HIM IF HE DOES LEAVE
February 8th, 2020 at 5:26 pm
Palmer was never safe with the ball yet he had a career high for INTs his first year under Arians – then they went down dramatically.
There’s your future dummies.
February 8th, 2020 at 5:29 pm
Matt Stafford drafted #1 at 21 years old.
First 5 years aged 21-25.
Games 61….TD’s 109……INT’s 73…..Comp% 59.4……Pass yards p/g 286
Jamesi Winston drafted #1 at 21 years old.
First 5 years aged 21-25.
Games 72…..TD’s 121…..INT’s 88…..Comp% 61.3…..Pass yards p/g 274
**************************
Matt Stafford age 26-31
Games 88…..TD’s 147…..INT’s 61…..Comp% 64.8…..Pass yards p/g 267
How many of the JBFers would have given up on Matt Stafford? I read quite a few posts where many wanted to obtain Stafford. Of course they want him at 31 not 25. Most NFL QB’s improve with age. I’d hate to see Winston become Stafford or better for another franchise.
Games
February 8th, 2020 at 5:40 pm
@Tampa Bay Demon- You nailed brother, the fans need to embrace whoever is at QB or they will never succeed.
February 8th, 2020 at 5:49 pm
Ndog
Where did you find out Jameis got lasiks done. If true this might be what he needed. I am actually stoked about this news. This TC should be very interesting.
February 8th, 2020 at 5:53 pm
Dapostman,
Interesting start for a comparison!
I say start, because the info you posted is bulk stats. Have you additional info or are you looking strictly at time /age + cumulative stats?
I hope for Winston’s sake, personal and professional, He doesn’t have a Stafford like career. Toiling away in a mismanaged franchise , season after season of losing , performing at a high level in front of dozens of fans while his career withers away ..like Detroit itself.
I hope for better for winston.
Buc or not, it’s nice to see talented individuals succeed to the fullest potential. It wouldn’t upset me in the least if he was in the SB next year with another team. “Great for him but sucks for buc fans “.
February 8th, 2020 at 5:56 pm
Stan,
What’s your point?
Is “they’re playing for peanuts” it?
February 8th, 2020 at 6:05 pm
ATrain Says
“WHY is a Coach Like Bruce having trouble deciding what do do???”
Who says he is? The unsourced media?
We are in the time of year when the media grasps at straws for stories. Most of what you hear is false.
February 8th, 2020 at 6:10 pm
Munch,
Palmer got hurt in year two, didn’t he? Less games played= less INTs?
How idiotic is turnover margin and the historical data of winning/losing? I think it’s more idiotic to press on for another year of the status woe.
February 8th, 2020 at 6:13 pm
@D1,
The stats were just to compare Winston’s and Stafford’s first 5 years in the league at the same age. Then to see how Stafford improved as he aged and matured. Hopefully Winston does the same as a Buc and hopefully the Bucs don’t go the same route as the Lions franchise.
It also looks like Matt Stafford has become a better QB without having to force the ball to Calvin Johnson constantly. Maybe Winston and Leftwich can figure out how to spread the ball around more without forcing it downfield so much.
February 8th, 2020 at 6:17 pm
Suppose winston has another year like last year, will anyone still be using the Carson Palmer crystal ball?
I’m sure there is more , than a single veteran player who once played for BA, supporting evidence that Winston will have a dramatic turnaround int wise in his second year with BA.
The Palmer defense is rather tenuous at best. It can be dismissed with one fact and one fact only. Not the most intelligent position to take, it’s as rational as betting the house on the gambling advice obtained from miss chloe’s 1 900 charlatan line.
Smart or Dumb is not how you evaluate such proposals. The right outcome is smart, the wrong is dumb. Basically, its a stellar example of simple thinking
Or the thoughts of a simpleton!
February 8th, 2020 at 6:18 pm
alaskabuc
Listen, I know you mean well but do you really believe if all the fans would just be happy with Jameis, he would all of a sudden play better?
seriously …that’s like the “lookin’ over his shoulder” theory
It comes with the territory. There is not one QB who has every fan in his pocket all the time. Fans are fans, they don’t make a player play a certain way. If that were the case we would have been in post season play more than once in the last 13 seasons. This is the toughest fanbase in the NFL to accept this ineptitude for so long. You might want to rethink your comment.
February 8th, 2020 at 6:23 pm
Not fair to compare 25 year old Jameis Winston to 34 year old Carson Palmer.
Palmer was probably as talented as Winston throwing the football but at a 34/25 year age discrepancy he was way more mature at the stages of their careers with Arians.
To me Matt Stafford is a closer comparison.
February 8th, 2020 at 6:30 pm
Dapostman,
Thanks for clarifying. Btw, great point about Calvin Johnson. It’s a fresh perspective and one to consider.
By chance, do recall who was the Lions head coach when Stafford came to the team? I know he’s had some crappie as coaching staffs during his tenure. Probably worse than winston. If that’s accurate, it is a plus for winston.
February 8th, 2020 at 6:48 pm
Dapostman,
Last comment. Totally on point ! Like you, I’ve read the Yr 2 theory, so often in fact, that it’s now just accepted as fact by a group of fans. I never thought it was a legitimate comparison from the start because of the fact you brought up.
Palmers experience playing in the scheme is certainly informative as is his comments about that experience. So I don’t dismiss them . I definitely think there’s a legitimate case for resigning winston and I don’t believe the Palmer predictor is anything but lazy thinking.
February 8th, 2020 at 6:59 pm
@D1,
I believe it was Jim Schwartz in 2009.
February 8th, 2020 at 7:05 pm
Love looks like a nice developmental project…
On another note…Just a reminder to the Joe Burrow crowd; as of right now, he’s a 1 year wonder that had the luxury of behind the best offensive line in college football…He won’t have 6 or 7 seconds to throw at the next level…Not to mention he’s most likely gonna play for a pretty bad team…
Every year these draft gurus hype these QBs up but very few of them come right in a play well; the reality is, you just don’t know….For those wishing and praying for Jameis to be banished; be careful what you wish for…
February 8th, 2020 at 7:51 pm
Dapostman,
(Smacking myself in the head), swartz!
Thanks…. I can’t believe it!
I forgot Jim all together.
One of my boys played there during that time period. He had such a negative opinion of Swartz and I guess it carried over.
February 8th, 2020 at 8:43 pm
Winston is a turnover machine: 88 INTS and most of you forgot FUMBLES LOST at 23.
111 turnovers.
February 8th, 2020 at 9:24 pm
You know what?
After looking at Love’s stats I must say……….
He’s Pro-Ready!
I just wish I could find some evidence that shows him defying his coach, playing the fool and getting into “hassles” so I could be absolutely sure, but I’m gonna go with my killer Ndildo instincts and say ……
Yeah……he’s the one!
February 8th, 2020 at 10:01 pm
Are buc fans stupid joe because some don’t want a quarterback turning the ball over? I get it but why demean fans because they have an opinion. Are other nfl people who say to dump him stupid too?
February 8th, 2020 at 11:56 pm
Ya’ll dont understand, Love OR Herbert wont be there at 14….and im against moving up for either one. Anthony Gordon with our 2nd pick is who we need. Yes he could go 3rd, but if he’s the guy you want, then go get him. We need Simmons or trench warfare with the first pick. So many questions to be answered first though. If we dont bring Suh back and can get DT Brown, get him!
Can we move Cappa to RT and snag Tyler Badassszzzz with our 3rd to play RG and eventually be much more affordable and just as effective C? I cant find a reason he’s been dropping out of the 1st to 3rd rounds in mocks….something happened i guess thats insider info only right now.
Then that leaves us at RB. I think Patrick Taylor will be there in the 4th.
February 9th, 2020 at 8:53 am
Y’all don’t want love cause he’s black lol I guarantee nobody has watched him play or any of the prospects to actually give a good assessment about them lol
February 9th, 2020 at 12:33 pm
^ you know how stupid that sounds right? I cant read all comments in every article because no time (and usually skip past some posters because they’re stupid) but in the 10 years ive been here, i have never read a racist comment or seen anyone say they dont want a black player. And im sure the Joe’s would probably not allow it. Its just absurd that some posters like you keep wanting to throw the race card at everything. Yes theres racists out there on ALL sides, but i dont generalize with a broad stroke of the brush like most ignorant race card throwers do.
For the record, i was one of the first here promoting Love….and i as well as many others have promoted and supported MANY black players. Isnt the league about 70-80% non white players? LOL! Good gosh man.
February 9th, 2020 at 1:49 pm
Love is a less polished version of Jameis.
February 9th, 2020 at 3:03 pm
Hah! he’s no turnover machine like JW, but think what you want. His 2018 college season was his best and shows his capabilities under more familiarity and with better players. If you watch his 2019 tape, understand he was under a new coach, new scheme, lost most of his receiving core from 2018 plus O line. But flyby posters wont care to notice that. Neither will the Joe who wrote this article.
But anyways, he’s going top 10 so he wont be there for us.
