Chris Godwin talks Jameis

Mark it down: Dec. 30, 2019.

That’s the day the Tampa Bay Buccaneers suspended — or ended — their show of public trust in Jameis Winston.

Maybe it’s real. Maybe it’s contract negotiation. Maybe it’s both.

Regardless, it makes Joe feel like the organization currently is choosing between the unknown and a guy the head coach has little faith in. Doesn’t that just make you want to run out and buy Bucs tickets?

Listening to various Bucs players speak since the season ended, Joe hears their uncertainty, their appreciation for Jameis, and their understanding that Tampa Bay’s decision is not easy.

Chris Godwin said he’s glad he’s not making the Jameis decision. But Godwin expanded on that during this exchange with Pat Kirwan on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Pat Kirwan: You don’t know if your quarterback is coming back. How’s that for a guy like you? I mean, your lifeline is the quarterback. It’s the guy throwing the ball. Do you wake up in the middle of the night wondering what the heck is going on here?

Chris Godwin:  I wake up screaming (laughs). No, but it’s a little weird. Obviously, it’s a little weird not really knowing like what the status of your quarterback is going to be because that’s the guy that’s going to get us the ball. But at the end of the day I gotta trust that my coaching staff and the people in the organization are going to do what’s right by us, and what’s going to help us win.

Kiwan followed up by asking Godwin what’s misunderstood when it comes to Jameis because, per Kirwan, media often shares uninformed nonsense.

“People just spew whatever, you know, comes out, whatever they hear from everybody else,” Godwin said. “I think the biggest thing about Jameis, man, he’s so resilient. I have a lot of respect for him because with all this chatter that’s going on in the outside world, he locks in on every single play no matter what the previous play happened. You know, whether it’s a pick or a touchdown, he’s coming in with the same mentality. He’s going to fight. As a player, as a receiver, you want those kind of guys on your team.”

Lavonte David says Jameis makes him scratch his head but he loves Jameis and thinks Jameis is a Super Bowl-caliber QB.

Shaq Barrett says Jameis “just gotta calm down.”

Meanwhile, the 2020 silence rolls on from One Buc Palace, and from Jameis himself.

He’s as good as GONE!!! YAY!!!!

  2. Snook Says:

How do you show trust in a player who is no longer under contract and also threw 30 INTs last season?

Please. You also have no idea what is taking place behind closed doors. What good would a “public vote of trust” do?

  3. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

I mean almost NO ONE in the Bucs organization is sticking up 100% for Winston….and with good reasons (PLURAL). But FSU Joe…”But he doesn’t trust his running backs!!”…..LOL

  4. Bucsdelight Says:

looks like the 2015 QB draft class has sunk. Nobody in that class is doing well.

  5. Bucsdelight Says:

It’s a shame we couldn’t have tanked a year or two later and got one of the good or great QBs currently.

  6. Aceofaerospace Says:

I bet if Jones rushed for 1500 yards but fumbled 20 times FSU Joe would want him run out of town. Especially if 7 of those fumbles were returned for opposing TD’s. If BA puts his job on the line to keep Mr Pick-6, then I’m all in. If not? Goodbye. Next.

  7. TampaTown Says:

Bucs season ticket renewals are due by March 13th. So guess what? They have to tell us what their decision on Jameis is by then or no one is renewing. We also need a statement from the Bucs regarding ticket sales to the Green Bay game. I’m not going to tolerate what happened at the Giants game last year happen again.

Our tanking is just not in sync.

  10. Pewter power Says:

Its understandable for the team to be silent, the guy they wanted to give a massive contract to ended the season on a pick 6. 30 touchdowns and over 5,000 yards and they still go 7-9 which was a direct result of interceptions. Detroit was like dead last in defense so putting up 450 is less impressive.

NFL gamepads and I tried to start the season over but watching winston throw the ball against san fran just bothers me to much to even watch the condensed version

  11. Elite Vita Says:

For those of you clamoring for the Bucs to be drafting Love….do you realize that last year he threw 20 TDS and 17 INT? We want to upgrade from Winston not clone him!

Ha !…archive search preseason….my prediction was that Jameis would play just good enough to put the top QB’s put of reach

  13. SteveK Says:

Remember: price vs production. Salary cap says get a rookie bc they are cheap
And if you strike gold, not turnover ridden fool’s gold, then you’re onto something and could make some payoff noise.

  14. gotbbucs Says:

Is it a weird situation? Sure. Winston made it weird by being himself. With the good will always be the bad. No different evidently in his personal life.

This new coaching staff came in and told him to go out there and “be you”. He did just that.
Koetter spent his time here trying to get him to cut down on the dumb stuff, and for small spurts it worked, but there are some demons inside this guy that won’t allow him to stay focused on being smart.

I want everybody to realize too that he is one delayed crotch grabbing accusation away from a full year suspension. Does anybody really believe that the Uber thing was an isolated incident considering this guys past? Let’s put $85 million guaranteed dollars in his account and see what’s hiding in the woodwork, shall we?
There’s more variables at work here with this guy than just interceptions. Just because he finally had a baby with a girl that he’s been cheating on since college doesn’t mean he’s matured out of stupid stuff yet. If some of you get your way he’s going to be a 26 year old with $100 million dollars and a penchant for doing stupid crap, family or no.

Joe – stop crying in your beer. You’ve had a five year run to cheer for this guy and attempt to build him up ie. America’s Quarterback.

Yeah, yeah…he’s the best QB in franchise history. A franchise that hasn’t sniffed the playoffs in 12 years. Are we gonna stick with JayMiss and try and break the KC Super Bowl drought?

    It’s time to move on.

    Peace, out

  18. SteveK Says:

Im starting to think this “resiliency” is a liability as well. Do we want Jameis to wipe from his brain that he threw a pick six on the first play??? Not really. Do we want Jameis to throw with abandon and not remember the negative plays of that day? Maybe but I say no. So this “forget the past mentality” has gotten Lovie fired, Dirk fired and BA is scratching his head. Maybe Jameis needs to remember what is ruining what could be a Hall of Fame career. Jameis isn’t the best QB in our franchise. Having a record doesn’t make you the best. Where are his playoff wins, where is his SB wins that all the nut huggers guaranteed in 2-3 yrs of drafting him? Now those same people are saying if he goes somewhere else, he’ll win SBs there. GTFO, he hasn’t proven crap. Yay, he got 5k yds. WHOOPIE F’n DOO!!!!

  24. D-Rome Says:

Meanwhile, the 2020 silence rolls on from One Buc Palace, and from Jameis himself.

There is also silence from other fan bases and media outfits not linking Jay-Miss to any potential QB positions. You don’t see other fan sites say, “Hey, what about we bring in Jameis Winston to be our starter for 2020.” No one says that because outside of Unreasonable Joe and the gallery of FSU honks, everyone else sees the issues and pretty much say “That’s a no for me.”

  25. D-Rome Says:

Also, it *almost* appears as if a “memo” went out to all Bucs players and personnel. I can’t tell if players are really speaking freely about Jameis or they have been requested to follow certain talking points. Quite a number of Bucs players aren’t really giving ringing endorsements.

  26. Adrnagy Says:

Unknown for the public for sure. But the plans are lay out already inside the organization. Trust test within those who know.
One major fact for jameis defense is we all know there no running game , and defense all year.
One major factor to jameis is 30 int.
Imo. Players are saying the truth when ask about the future of jameis. It’s a difficult decision. They can’t blast the organization for not building a smart roster and they can’t blast jameis. So it’s hand on hand. 50/50.

  27. Bucsdelight Says:

    @D-Rome,

I have seen articles in Chicago talking about Jameis being a fit for the Bears. Not really any other teams posting about it.

  28. Tye Says:

    D-Rome:

I believe that is the most telling of reality more than anything else…
What fan base is pounding the table for JW?
Where is an organization that is rumored to give JW a chance to start?
JW throw all these yards people seem so impressed by, TDs, he SO entertaining {supposedly}…
Why hasn’t any other team been even mentioning the possibility of landing JW?
SO many teams are needing QBs and ‘good ones are hard to find?’
I guess we see no one that truly matters thinks JW is a ‘good one’…

Its not hate.. to those who hate TRUTH, the truth sounds like hate!

  29. D-Rome Says:

    @Bucsdelight,

You are right. Just did a search on “Jameis Winston” + “Bears” and came across an article from PFT about it published two days ago. What was interesting is that the Bears may want to bring Jameis in to compete with Trubisky. I mean, that’s what it has come to for Jameis. No one wants to bring him in as the long term solution.

  30. BrianBucs Says:

Bucs players right now have to be very careful about what they say publicly about Winston and the entire QB situation and decision.
You can bet though that privately it a different story.
You know the defense is really tired of playing hard and watching Winston give away games.

  31. 941scott Says:

i saw a bears fan page write an article on bringing jameis in and the comments from every single commenter was that they want nothing to do with him…they would rather have MITCHELL TRUBISKY than jameis winston…..that told me a lot about how other teams view jameis….who would pay this guy $20 something million besides the bucs? who else would bring this guy in on a multi year deal?

  32. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Lol why are people celebrating? Nothing was announced here, move along.

  33. mark2001 Says:

Would be just like the bad news bears…they over pay Glennon..now they can pay thirty mil. and overpay Jameis. But really..don’t think that would ever happen.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

I think Peter King had the most revealing piece of info we heard.

Every ody is fixated on what he said about Brady but what really stuck out to me was that he said Jameis what a little bit more money then the Bucs are offering……..If that doesn’t mean the two sides are currently negotiating a deal I don’t know what does. If they are negotiating that means they want Winston to stay as a Buc. That means Bruce is endorsing Jaboo.

I fully expect Jameis to be a Buc next year. I think the smart thing to do would be a multi-year deal. If Bruce is willing to commit to Winston commit to Winston for the same time frame….2-3 years. Now you build everything else around him and you can get fancy with the contract figures to free up whichever money you need to bring back this defense.

Give Shaq a multi-year deal also. Again, this gives you more options to free up needed CAP space for this year. Not to mention he earned a long term contract.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  35. Jean Lafitte Says:

Fans are so programmed to losing it’s ridiculous.

  36. Bucsdelight Says:

    @D-Rome,

Yup, bring him for competition. It’s sad though, because the Bucs got rid of Fitz so that Jameis didn’t have competition.

  37. mark2001 Says:

Jean….good point. Five years, three coaches and here we are. We can comfort ourselves in statistics..the ones we like…and rest in that. Take a chance and bring in a new QB? That is uncertain…at that rate, we might end up in the bottom of the division… or not make the playoffs. Oh yeah…we are most of the time and aren’t making the playoffs. And in the process of ensuring our comfort, let’s overpay to keep the old one, and lock in the excitement of continuing the status quo.

Frankly, if Arians says, OK and doesn’t overpay, I’m behind his decision. But don’t know why we would put all our “eggs” in the Jameis basket. And if in doing so, we don’t bring in a quality back up or draft pick, I have serious doubts.

  38. 2002WasALongTimeAgo Says:

    Mark:

The Bears articles are throwing around Jaboo’s name with a cheap back up offer to compete with Mitch, not starter’s money.

  39. lambchop Says:

He locks in on his receivers too. Progressions? What’s that?

  40. Bucsdelight Says:

yeah, there is no reason not to bring a new QB in, whether through draft or FA. Ryan Griffin obviously isn’t the answer.

  41. mark2001 Says:

Delight..believe parting with Fitz and such was so that Jameis wouldn’t be looking over his shoulder…and give him every opportunity to succeed. Didn’t work out that way, so the kid gloves are off. People think Arians career lived or died with getting Jameis on track…but I would add that if Jameis isn’t the guy to be molded into a franchise QB, his directive was to set the situation straight for the future…no matter what it takes.

  42. mark2001 Says:

So Jimmy.. if Jameis flops, you are willing to enjoy basement dwelling and meaningless Decembers? For two or three years? And more? No thanks.

  43. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Mark- nobody enjoys basement dwelling or meaningless Decembers. You’re either being an a$$ or an idiot. Either way, we all want the same thing. Just because we have different opinions on how to accomplish this feat doesn’t mean we are now mouth breathers who celebrate losing.
You can sign jameis to a 2-3 year deal and if he flops you draft another and either trade him or hold on one more year before you cut loose, what’s so hard to understand about that?

  44. Matthew Fifer Says:

    @Mark2001

More importantly than just the idea of sticking with Jameis….who legit thinks that Arians will be here 2-3 years from now, especially if Jameis stays? Every time he loses his mind on the sideline, I am just waiting for him to drop. His doctor may have said he was OK to coach, but I don’t think his doctor knew WHO he would be coaching at the time.

If Jameis sticks around, I picture this as Arians last year coaching, not because he gets fired, but because he retires to avoid dying on the sideline.

  45. mark2001 Says:

Think Alaska…you give Jameis that big contract, and he flops, you can’t afford to pay two franchise QB’s. Trade him for what? A six or seven year QB that has “flop and bust” next to his name? You must be kidding. Who would assume and pay that contract of the flop? The best you could do is cut him and eat any dead money. And unless you draft and develop someone, you have nothing. You will be a perennial loser. Just giving you a clear picture. Do you have any idea how trades, contracts and such work?

  46. mark2001 Says:

And you frontload the contract to avoid the cap hit if you cut him, it eats the cap this year, when we need the money to keep the key pieces of the D together. Not being an A..just giving you some reality.

  47. stravenite Says:

“You can sign jameis to a 2-3 year deal and if he flops you draft another and either trade him or hold on one more year before you cut loose, what’s so hard to understand ?”

Q1 Trade him to who , no-one wants him

Q2 Why tie up money long term for the same result – Glazers don’t give money away

Q3 He might get a role a a backup somewhere – as long as it’s not with the bucs

Q4 BA has already stated the defense is the priority, JW is well down the pecking order Translated he is not that important to re-sign

    He ain’t coming back hopefully

  48. Buccaneerscotty Says:

What do you want him to say? He sucks and I can’t stand all the turnovers? And then we tag him ? Where would that leave Godwin? They are stuiped questions that can’t be answered honestly until he is gone….

  49. mark2001 Says:

Strav…they don’t know that unless the guy you trade, renegotiates the contract, the team picking him up has to assume the contract. And who would pick up a huge contract, paying for a guy that hasn’t made it under three coaches? Most likely, the best you could hope for it to cut him and eat the dead cap money.

  50. mark2001 Says:

Some truth to that Scotty. You can’t throw him under the bus, particularly since he might be coming back. And to do so would basically be asking the Bucs to let you go or trade you.

  51. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Mark if we guarantee only two years and he sucks in year one, we only have to carry his cap one year. We draft a QB who has a cheap rookie contract and you’re not paying two franchise QB salaries, just one.
So the rookie starts his first year and yeah maybe we don’t have a lot of cap that year but that’s a development year for that QB then the next year you start really filling holes and preparing for that run.
    That all IF Jameis flops.
If you would like to, I’d be more than happy to bet if Jameis returns and plays a full season that 1: he throws less than 30 INTs and 2: We win more than 7 games.
He WILL be better this year, in those areas. Maybe not as many yards but that’s what y’all want right? With less turnover and more wins nobody will be talking about yards right?

  52. SteveK Says:

I want wins, and yes more touchdowns than turnovers. I’m not interested a $30 million price tag- for “entertainment” (continued losing).

  53. Bucy Says:

Have fun in chicago , not going to the playoffs aimless Winston.

  54. Craig Says:

I would say that the franchise tag will be offered, if Jameis doesn’t refuse it he will be back for one more year.

Maybe he can see the writing on the wall and make an attempt to be better next year. It really is up to him.

He could have a QB whisperer get him ready for next season. So far that hasn’t happened.

Maybe the new Collective Bargaining Agreement will allow more contact between coaches and players during the off season and he will be tutored properly. He is one that the current CBA had damaged. You can tell by the slow season starts he always has.

  55. Wesley Says:

Looking more and more like their moving on.

  56. mark2001 Says:

Doesn’t work that way Alaska. He will want a contract with some guarantees and bonus money in it, not just a thirty million if on the roster june 1 or something of the sort with no other ramification. And if it did, why would any QB sign such a contract? They wouldn’t. And rookie QB contracts are much more cap friendly,…you wouldn’t be paying a franchise QB salaries in the first contract. You would pay the rookie QB contract based upon his draft position, Please do some research. It doesn’t work the way you think.

  57. mark2001 Says:

On July 20, 2017, the Chiefs signed Mahomes to a fully guaranteed four-year, $16.42 million contract that included a signing bonus of $10.08 million.

Some think his next contract will be a $200 mil, 40 mil a year deal.

    See the difference?

  58. Jean Lafitte Says:

Players get frustrated but they know not to tread on each other in the public. Especially the relationship between QB and WR. Plus, I’m sure players hear quickly from their agents if OBP is not happy. Cease and desist.

guaranteed agents are on speed dial

  59. JimmyJack Says:

Mark2001…..Thought it was obvisous that in bringing Winston back Bruce believes he can get him to elevate his game and get us to contend for the NFC.

Now if Bruc has as big of a question mark as many fans do then he would not consider a multi-year deal. He would just tag him at most.

But if I’m reading the tea leafs right they are negotiating which means multi-year………I totally trust Bruce knows what’s he’s doing. Especially at the QB position. He knows what other QBs are avialable and there’s not shortage of capable pro experienced QBs he could lure over. Bruce is gonna pick whichever option he sees as best. If that Winston I’m totally on board. No. I don’t not enjoy losing football. But I will remain on this ship. If it sinks it will be with me on it!

    GO BUCS!!!

  60. mark2001 Says:

So 7 mil a year vs. 40 mil. Great rookie contract and salary cap advantage, when you hit as an organization.

  61. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You have to ask yourself….If the Bucs don’t want Winston, who would? If BA can’t fix Jameis, who could?
This is all about supply & demand…..I’m not convinced there is a demand….not at a high price….price is the ultimate equalizer.

  62. JimmyJack Says:

I would guarantee Winston 73.5 million. 28M in 2020 fully guaranteed, 30M in 2021 fully guaranteed, 31M in 2022 half guaranteed…..if it don’t work out you’d have to cut and eat a dead CAP hit in 2022.

Eyeball 2021 draft for a new QB to groom behind, or possibly take
over for Winston if things look shakey in 2020.

I would try to tack on 3 more club option years if possible.

In the meantime you can push around whatever CAP money you needed for free agents. You can sign all your guys and not need to draft a QB so you can load up this year at other needs to make a serious playoff push.

IMO Winston will come on strong this year in year 2 under Arians and playoffs will not be a problem. Contending for the NFC South is truely the goal but they got a lot to proove againts New Orleans still.

    That would be my plan.

And full disclosure……I know full well this post will tick off all the haters. It is my true opinion but I can’t say I don’t take just a little bit of pleasure knowing my post tilts some of y’all. That’s kinda the fun of all this.

  63. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Mark you know I’m a big supporter of Jameis and obviously you’re on the other side of the fence.
When you ask why a QB would sign such a contract, well IMO because that may be the only contract on the table or maybe because it’s the best offer he is gonna get RIGHT NOW.
If he digs in at 30 M, I’m afraid he will most likely be pricing himself out of Tampa.
I hope is smarter than that and can self evaluate a little better. He seems pretty confident in himself and if he is smart he would take a short term contract so that he could show he is REALLY worthy of that top dollar contract. In two years that number will most likely be 40 M instead of 30.
I hope that explains why a WB would sign such a contract. It makes sense to me.

  64. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Why a QB* would sign such a contract….. dang autocorrect.

  65. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Mark either you think I last comprehension or you actually do. I know very well how contracts work. Can we get past that?

  66. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Mark2001

Agree with you…..”Frankly, if Arians says, OK and doesn’t overpay, I’m behind his decision. But don’t know why we would put all our “eggs” in the Jameis basket. And if in doing so, we don’t bring in a quality back up or draft pick, I have serious doubts.”

But I’m not certain yet which way this cookie will crumble.

@JJ That’s great logic up to a point. It means the Bucs may want him. They have obvious bargaining needs that King and everyone is aware…JW and agent expect to be paid like a franchise QB at 30+ million with multi year(s)and guaranteed money at a generous level.

NOBODY believes JW is worth that!! Well except perhaps for NDOG Winston.
King could just be stating the obvious.

I think the only thing we can take from all of this is what ROD posted..yawn.

It’s just business. Neither side would be smart to show their hand this early.
It does mean neither side has totally ruled out a JW return but both sides are checking their options. JW’s are pretty limited unless another GM told his agent something but that would be a dangerous violation of tampering.

The Bucs hold ALL the cards! At least as D.R. points out March 10th…that’s the deadline to announce tags but those announcements don’t begin until Feb 25th.
If the Bucs don’t say anything after the 25th we can believe the “negotiations” if indeed there are any..are not going well.

JW holds only one…sit out…not much leverage there.

I love this talk of players on defense being frustrated with Jameis. Have you people not seen our defense and kicker over the last 5 years? If anyone is frustrated it’s Jameis as like it or not he has produced something positive with the yards, points, etc.. during his time here. What has this defense and kicking game produced over the past five years? Give me a freaking break with being frustrated with him BS. You want me to sit here and go over the games he has played brilliant in and still lost due to their shotty play? You guys are sitting here patting each other on the back when first off nothing has been decided and second about 90% of the crap you guys are saying is wrong/simply an opinion.

    The quarterback is toast!!

  70. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Yeah that is an interesting take on Jameis’ mentality. I definitely agree that resilience is great but not when you’re then one putting yourself through adversity lol.
Also, that snap and clear mentality I guess it’s better than dwelling on every throw and being scared of throwing passes all of the time but yeah, maybe Jameis needs to be a little scared or at least more cautious about some of his throws.
I think the ideal QB lies somewhere in the middle. Not afraid to make mistakes but able to learn from them when you do make them.

  73. TexBuc Says:

Winston is IMMATURE since I first saw him at FSU. He WILL mature and calm down he just turned 26 last month. Yes some do take longer to mature than others, but I see too much upside to just let him walk. When you draft a QB you are drafting for what he can become not what he is.

  74. TexBuc Says:

Dolphin fans got what they wanted and ran Tannehill out of town, but still no more wins. The Titans have a QB that fits and likely their QB of the future. Raheem the said “I will tolerate you until I can upgrade you.”

  75. TexBuc Says:

More than likely some fans should accept the next announcement from the Bucs will be about a contract extension for a QB..

  76. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete…….What any fan thinks what Winston is worth quite frankly means absolutely nothing.

Case in point was Donovan Smith last year. Fans like to try to put a price tag on players worth and whatever formula they use is obvisously completely flawed……..The fact of the matter is that when a player hits free agency at a ripe age as a starter and they are one of the best avialable free agents they are going to get paid top dollar……or darn close to it. It doesn’t matter where they rank in the league……It matters where they rank in the free agency pool. If they are a top Free agent they are going to break the bank………These teams don’t care that there’s ten other guys better then him because none of those ten other guys are avialable.

Fact is if you want a top Free agent you have to pay them. What fans think players are worth has no bearing on how the free agent market works.

I don’t understand how fans don’t understand this. You don’t even gotta follow all the NFL. We see it right here in Tampa Bay every year.

Two years ago it was Jensen getting highest paid Center money. Now he is not. I bet the guy who now makes more is not the top Center in football either.

Last year we saw both Donovan and Kwon(with a broken knee noneless) get top tier money. We know both are not top tier players. This prooves free agency works differently then how fans think these guys deserve to be paid.

Now this year fans are at it again with Winston. I’ve heard ridiculous numbers. Sometimes the numbers fans come up with don’t even represent half of what a starting QB makes on the free agent market.

So will Winston get 30M? Absolutely he will or darn close to it……….if…..if……he finds a team that will name him their starting QB.

Is he worth 30M? Yes he is. Because his value is not determined by random Bucs fans looking up contract number ers across the league(which include rookie deals & outdated contracts). Thats not how this works…..thats not how any of this works. Winston’s value is equal to what NFL teams will pay him as a free agent……..Make no mistake. If Bruce wants Winston as his starter for 2020 it will cost roughly 30M……….And if he picks another QB it’s going to roughly cost the same price………unless you bring in somebody like Mariotta to compete with a rookie.

But you wanna sign a starting QB on the open market whether it be Winston, Brady, Rivers ect. The going rate is very close to 30M.

  77. mark2001 Says:

Alaska… You said drafted rookies got franchise QB money…not so. Or that we can trade Winston if he flames out, without considering the ramifications of his contract that would have to be honored by the team trading with us. So what was I to think? And he frankly, won’t sign more than a one year without some guarantees. Don’t agree we should do so, but JJ has a better picture of what Jameis would likely expect.

Frankly, I’m a Bucs fan. Not a Jameis fan. And would like to see a lower contract with incentives that protect the Bucs, while giving Jameis a chance to earn his money.. if he preforms as so many of you guys are sure he will. I’m just not sure we haven’t seen what he is. And one bad game every three will never win you a SB championship.

  78. JimmyJack Says:

NDog…..The defense we will have entering next year(after we sign back our players) is a good one.

The last five years have no bearing or relevance on who and what our current defense is.

Now if you wanna say they stunk at the beginning of the season. That’s fair and you are right.

But that is living in the past. Any decent Buc fan can see the defense turn a corner last year. They will be ready to rock and roll so stop whining about them already. Wake up and smell the news and quit living in the past. It does make you sound totally unaware and foolish.

Mark if we guarantee only two years and he sucks in year one, we only have to carry his cap one year. We draft a QB who has a cheap rookie contract and you’re not paying two franchise QB salaries, just one.

Mark I don’t know where I said you pay a rookie franchise QB money. It’s actuallu the opposite of what I said.
In my scenario where Winston gets a 2 year guaranteed deal, he sucks year one so we draft a rookie. We basically would have to hold Jameis and his contract for one year (because it’s still guaranteed) but if a teams QB goes down and someone wants to trade for Winston (who would be on our bench for the rookie QB) we would be stupid to not do it. Only one year guaranteed means there’s no dead money the next season.
You do understand how this all works right?
Either you’re not following me or you lack comprehension of how contracts work, which is fine, you’re not a GM. I feel there’s some kind of lack of understanding of what I’m saying.

  80. Anonymous Says:

I was wondering why it took Nfog so long to come to his BFs defense, but did Jaymiss have you getting crab legs for family dinner tonight ? When he’s not a Buc next year does that mean we won’t see you commenting about how it’s everyone else’s fault ? I really hope so and wish you and your boy all the best !!!

  81. JimmyJack Says:

“If Arians says OK and doesn’t overpay”

I mean define overpay…….Maybe your wishes are realistic. But if your vision of overpay is anything like I have been seeing from several fans it’s just not realistic and does not resemble the free agent market in the slightest.

To be specific I’ve heard several fans saying to pay Winston 20M and some saying even lower……..yes we’ll that sounds all fine and dandy but is not at all realistic.

Nick Foles signed last year as a starter and got 22M he was the lowest paid free agent signing last year………So that is the bar set for signing a QB. And prices go up not down. Given Winston’s age, potential and his passing stats(yards) he will make significantly more then Foles if he finds a team that will name him a starter.

  82. Buc1987 Says:

  85. mark2001 Says:

If the QB is at 14 that Arians thinks highly of, I think we will draft him…this year. Who knows who will be available next year.

And don’t think any team will assume Jameis in mid-season, if he has a 30 mil. contract.

The difference regarding Jameis isn’t that I want him gone,…I just want him to earn a smaller base, and if he earns his incentive he gets more… if he doesn’t, he doesn’t get it. With that smaller contract, we can sign another D player, that we really need. Or extend Godwin.

  86. Rod Munch Says:

“Falcons won’t offer DE Vic Beasley new deal, which will make him a free agent”

This, btw, is why you don’t sign Shaq to a big money long-term deal. You franchise Shaq and see if he can do it again. Beasley had 15.5 sacks one year, and not more than 7 in any other year. Shaq, I think will be good going forward, but to me, good is getting around 10 sacks, and that would be great production – unless you’re paying him thinking you’re getting 20 sacks.

Anywho Winston will be back, unless they sign Brady. Signing Rivers would be the dumbest thing possible since he’s just a really old and bad version of Winston. Then once you get past that there isn’t anyone else.

So the NFL’s leading passer, the now 26-year old who set team records for yards and TDs and points in a season (and wasn’t close to the INT team record) will be back.

  87. Stevebobucsfan Says:

Like it or not Jameis will be back with one of those tags, Arians will draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round to sit a year and if Jameis falters any, Arians will replace him with whatever veteran that’s on the team until the drafted QB is ready. We all know that these young QBs now doesn’t take but about 5 or 6 games to be ready to start. I just don’t see Arians going out and bringing in a QB to get re acclimated with the offense and these receivers we have It’s Jameis or one of the other veterans on the team to start and then who ever is brought in will start after they have gotten acclimated to the offense and this is if they’re need ( this is just my opinion)

  88. BucEmUp Says:

Its pretty obvious that Jameis is highly likely to be playing elsewhere for 2020. Although I would like to see him play a second season I believe they may bring in a new face. Rather than bitching about something I cannot control I will just throw out my suggestion on who I would go out and grab, and who has the most upside. I see Bridewater as an interesting option. He’s smart, he’s mobile, he’s accurate he’s got low miles and he brings with him Sean Paytons playbook to help Bowles. Maybe he can even teach Leftwich a thing or two as well.

  89. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

Peyton Manning (first five years), 113 Td’s–100 picks.

    Dump Peyton Manning!
If there was a joecoltsfan.com back then, I’d love to hear the comments …

  90. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I wholeheartedly agree with all of that Mark. I love the Bucs and I really like Jameis but because I love my Bucs more, I understand we cannot afford to pay Jameis 30M unless he limits those turnovers.
I’ve been on record here saying incentives would be a great way to structure his contract and ensure that if he plays really well that he can be paid really well.

  91. mark2001 Says:

Alaska…agree. Both Jameis and the Bucs win in that scenerio.

  92. Defense Rules Says:

Mark2001 … “If the QB is at 14 that Arians thinks highly of, I think we will draft him…this year. Who knows who will be available next year.”

Have seen a couple of Mock Drafts now that in fact have us taking a QB at #14. One has us taking Herbert; another has us taking Eason. I’d think that Eason is more likely to be there at #14 than Herbert is. BOTH mocks predicted a run on OLinemen early in the draft, as well as QBs. Makes sense I guess. Eason’s still raw IMO, but he’s got good size, a strong arm, throws a good deep ball and might be a good fit for BA’s type of offense.

Even if we go that route though, I still think the Bucs will transition tag Jameis, AND probably look for a veteran QB as his backup.

  93. Mr. Reality Says:

Not wierd, but good business from the Bucs, and what I’d expect from any player. No doubt some dumbazz Winston lovers on this site walk into a workplace and beg for a job, and say they just need work and will take any salary. While Winston’s on and off-field decisions suck and have put him in this position anyway, even Winston cannot be that stupid. But then again, if he thinks it’s realistic to expect $30M, he is that dumb. The Bucs on the other end are right to look at FA QBs who can mentor their long-term guy. Should Winston be the short-term guy, he’s not the one to teach anything about football or life. Let’s not corrupt our first (potential) franchise QB.

    Ineffable

Why would we want to run Peyton Manning. He won 13 games his 2nd year!!!

Then he won 10 games in 2 of the remaining three years. He was pro bowl 3X
He made the playoffs THREE of his first five years.

His overall record for his first five years was 42-38 a WINNING record.

JW…had one winning season at 9-7..no playoffs his overall record 28-42.

How can you possibly compare JW to Peyton? Do you honestly believe that there is some anti-Jameis feeling that would have caused us to run him if he won 13 games his second year…two more winning seasons..three playoffs?
    Really?

  99. Ndog Says:

Y’all love the precious media that has convinced you Jameis is not an elite level QB. Well that same media last night chose a QB that threw two picks AND fumbled the ball twice on the oppenets side of the 50 instead of a guy that ran for 100 yards and both caught and ran for a TD. Your precious media that again has brainwashed you put Steve Atwater in the HOF over John Lynch despite Lynch having more interceptions, more sacks, more forced fumbles, more fumble recoveries and making one additional pro bowl PLUS he did it for teams not just one. Do yeah please try to tell me the media is not bias. Yeah ok… Suckers!!!

    Atwater
    2x all pro, 8x probowler, 24 picks, 5 sacks, 1 TD, 6 FF, 8 FR,
    1118 tackles
    Lynch
    2x all pro, 9x probowler, 26 picks, 13 sacks, 0 TD, 16 FF, 9 FR, 1059 tackles

  100. BigMacAttack Says:

I wanted JW gone, but I’ve had some time to think about it. I’m glad the Bucs are taking time to hopefully think about it. The truth is that he can be great, he is great when he isn’t screwing up. I still can’t see paying him near $30 million when Brees and Brady are free agents. Even at their respective ages, they blow Jameis away. They’re smart and know how to win. If Jameis is smart enough to take that $15 million contract and finally correct his mistakes, the Bucs can afford to field a winning team, make the playoffs and in 2021’ Jameis can get the long term, big money contract he desires. But he needs to prove it and he needs to be patient when it comes to the money. I mean seriously guys, which one of you would turn down $15million pay for a year. You can beat me every day, light me on fire and hang me from the stadium for $15 million. Get real Jameis, get right, and make your dreams come true. And that’s all I have to say about that.

  101. SB Says:

Also…….I am here to read Ndog’s comments. Almost better than Tmax’s.

  102. TexBuc Says:

Chances are very high all this contract talk is Winston’s agent and not Jameis. Most players rely on their agent to work out a contract. I believe if they are not working on a contract the Bucs would already have leaked info that we are moving on.

  103. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Bruce Arians did say in his last press conference in early January that he feels he could start training a new quarterback. As far as having to teach the system over again to a new QB, does it matter? “No, not all.”  He did not say whether it mattered if that QB would be a veteran or a rookie.

He also said he would look to see what might be behind door number two. I took this to mean he would check all viable options.  He will not discard Winston unless he has a decent replacement, all things considered from BA’s point of view. He is working to build a team in total.  He is looking for championships.

Looking at his offense and the QBs he has had significant input into developing should inform the debate surrounding Winston. Two criteria are obvious for that QB.

    1. He must have a strong arm.
    2. he must be able to learn an intricate offense and and execute it well.

Those are what must be considered in the debates here and in trying to guess what BA will actually do this off season.

  104. Joe Says:

St Pete…….What any fan thinks what Winston is worth quite frankly means absolutely nothing.

That’s true. It’s what Bruce Arians/Jason Licht and the Glazer family think he’s worth.

  105. Jean Lafitte Says:

I would at this point, since the reality is that Winston will be resigned, is like to see him wear corrective lenses. I really do think all his squinting is a sign he’s having vision problems. Supposedly his face shield is not vision enhanced and he doesn’t wear contacts. Also gives a partial explanation to why he locks onto a receiver and stares them down because if he takes his eyes off them his eyes lose that direct focus because it’s all a blur. Or why he struggles with a no look screen pass to a receiver behind a line of blockers. He seems to struggle picking out the receiver. Get lasiks done JW …Licht will pay for it.

  106. stpetebucsfan Says:

Somehow I think like so many things in America it will end up…”show me the money”. JW wants the late great Aretha to break out…R E S P E C T..find out what it means to me”

First announcement out of the box and JW and his agent spell respect thirty plus million a year…multi year contract with guaranteed money…as befits a franchise QB.

That’s one side of the negotiation. The other side…here’s a tag for you JW 30 million and multi year deals doesn’t work for us…perhaps in a gesture of good faith the Bucs do as many have suggested…give JW a contract that starts at last year’s 20 million with major bonuses. 2 million for every win over nine.
Win 11 and salary jumps to 24 million…12 he’s at 26..13..well you get it.

Make the playoffs and win in the first round for a salary of 30-36 million.

I do not know the intricacies of the CBA. That much pay in incentives may be illegal…but it sure would be fair.

  107. stpetebucsfan Says:

“.What any fan thinks what Winston is worth quite frankly means absolutely nothing.”

“It’s what Bruce Arians/Jason Licht and the Glazer family think he’s worth.”

I’ll go a step further…ultimately it’s what the Glazer family thinks. It”s their franchise.

I suspect they will give heavy consideration to what BA and Licht input…but I do not think the Glazers will “absolutely” view the opinion of the fans as meaningless.

  108. Wesley Says:

Don’t need the media to tell me Jameis isn’t the guy, we’ve watched him for 5 yrs now, I think we all know who he is. A turn-over machine.

  109. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

    St Pete–

    Great point.
Essentially, you are confirming that it is a team game and not a single player effort that wins games.
The Colts defense was able to overcome Manning’s interceptions (12 more of them!) and the Bucs defense was not. Therefore, if the Bucs had a good defense, Jameis would have a winning record.
Conclusion; you must be a big Jameis supporter.

  110. T REX Says:

How many good decisions have the Glazers made lately?

Not very many. I expect them to screw this up too.
