This is what it’s come to. February is almost here and the Bucs silence continues, mirrored by silence from the Jameis Winston camp and shadowed by escalating rumors that both sides appear to like.
Next up today? Anonymous league sources talking to ESPN.
Longtime reporters Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler penned an Overheard-During-Super-Bowl-Week column and one nugget featured an unnamed NFL suit weighing in on Jameis’ future.
The Bucs’ Jameis Winston, coming off a 33-touchdown, 30-interception season, will join Brady, Brees and others on the free-agent market in March. Bruce Arians was noncommittal at the end of the season about Winston returning to Tampa in 2020.
Here’s what one NFL exec said this week about the former No. 1 overall pick: “I don’t see how you can pay him. It would have to be pretty reasonably low if they did. You can’t give him big money based on the way he played. He won’t have a market.”
No surprise that this take was rather vague, but the “he won’t have a market” line is loud and clear.
Joe is unsure of what to make of that. There was a starter money out there for Mike Glennon when the Bucs let him hit free agency. Joe clearly remembers that general manager Jason Licht was prepared to make Glennon the highest paid (or nearly the highest paid) backup QB in all of football.
Josh Freeman was launched by the Bucs and found a team willing to make him a starter and pay him for half a season. Heck, so did Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh McCown.
To think there would be no starter market for Jameis is just silly. But at what price?
That’s the magic question. Where might the Bucs draw a line in the sand on a one-year offer if they don’t want to use the franchise tag on Jameis?

I’m not sure I read much into this remark. An unnamed NFL suit could be somebody well up in management in the NFL who could simply be saying this to depress the market…at least for JW.
I’m not sure I agree there’s no market. IMHO the market will be for minimal guaranteed money going forward.
I’m happy if BA decides we need JW and they spend the money for ONE year!
Any multi year contract at this point just seems insane.
I would hope even NDOG and the most ardent JW supporters could at least compromise and agree if we franchise him it’s a fair deal. Please don’t hurt my brain with talk of but we need to save money in the future by signing JW long term.
And STOP with the enormous bag of manure that JW “made” ME13 and Godwin instead of the other way around. If you wish to blame the last five years on the entire team fine. Is the QB not the most important part of the TEAM?
Just realize that JW is now FOURTEEN GAMES under .500!!! He would have to go 14 and freaking 2 just to complete six years in this league at .500.
By definition..Jameis Winston has quarterbacked a losing record. That’s a fact…all the alibis in the world cannot change it.

The market is whatever the highest any team pays……and we won’t know the market until that happens…..
I’m thinking the transition tag would be enough to keep Winston……a bit over $23 mil……a raise from last year but less that the franchise tag……sure, we could lose Winston to another team that pays more…..but we would have an opportunity to match the offer……..that would truly make it a market price.

Several rookies are potential quality qbs..
Then you come to Marcus Mariota; Blake Bortles; Jameis Winston
Marcus gives you a mobile qb that will protect the ball but limited big plays because he is conservative..
Blake Bortles is somewhat mobile but will also throw pics alarmingly..
Then JW who is going to play for both teams as well as bring a LOT of baggage with him – having a bad rep and one more strike and out for a year – not to mention gone through 3 coaches (one supposedly better than the last) and plays like a rookie, losing you more games than he wins for you..
YEAH, there isn’t anyone lining up to LOSE!

This is what I’ve been saying on here for a while. I’ve been looking around the league’s other fan sites and people there consistently oppose bringing in Winston to be their starting quarterback. For the Winston supporters here, what I want to know is if Jameis is truly a generational talent that the Bucs will regret if they let go, then why is he so opposed and so reviled by the rest of the 31 other fan bases outside Tampa (and FSU)?
Like, I for one believe that if Sean Payton were put under a lie detector test he would say straight up that he would rather have Taysom Hill be his starting quarterback than Winston if their salary were the same. I just don’t see it, where is he getting that big money contract or even just a starting job as QB elsewhere in this league?

So far I’ve only found fan comments from the Chicago Bears, and those comments were overwhelmingly negative for bringing in Winston. No market in Chicago, apparently. “Overwhelmingly”? It was 29 to 1 in the negative…

Glennon hadn’t logged enough playing time to properly evaluate his worth up until he went to Chicago. Josh Freeman was given another chance under the cheap but your Jaboo has had 5 full seasons to elevate his game and the fact that he was the #1 pick he hasn’t lived up to his billing. I wouldn’t say there is no market but that there’s no-one who will want to give him north of 30 million.

The last couple of years were nuts on the QB scene. Then each of the teams that spent big bucks found out that their 4th round pick outplayed the big contract guys.
I don’t think this year will see all that much action on free agent QBs. With the possibility of Rivers and Brady on the market, it doesn’t leave many starting positions open.
That means Jameis would be best served coming back here on a one year contract. He might even do something to be ready when the season starts. I have my doubts on that, I just hope he will be accountable next year with Jake Fromm breathing down his neck.

You hear almost nothing about Winston at fan sites for other teams who need or are soon to need quarterbacks.
I find it telling that the Kwon quote seemed to indicate that Jameis hadn’t yet decided where He wanted to play, yet. As in “his decision” and “I’m sure he’ll make the right decision.”
Apparently, there’s no discussions going on about a deal now, which means the Glazers either want to tag him or let him go. It’d be a lot easier to get a team friendly deal now than in March.

I am fully in the Winston camp for one season at this point. TO’s must improve like his deep passing game did. If he doesn’t improve then cut bait after 2020. He played well enough to get another year under Arians.

I am by no means a Jameis fan (haven’t hid it either) but if he does end up back in Tampa (which I’ve assumed since the season began) it has to be for something reasonable. No team should tie up a large chunk of their salary cap to him when you don’t know what you’re going to get on a snap to snap basis. Personally I hope Tampa lets him hit the open market before negotiating against themselves.

Also Leftwich needs to be a less risk it biscuit OC inside his own 25 yard line. Half of Winston’s interceptions happened there. More careful play calling when backed up will help.

He was in year 5 as a starter, if the whole playbook isn’t available anywhere on the field then why are we even discussing a 2nd contract?
He was throwing interceptions on 5-10 yard comebacks and curls, not exactly risky throws for an NFL QB.

Glennon’s contract was not close to the league average for staring QBs that year. While 3 years, $18.5 million dollars is nothing to sneeze at it hardly qualifies as starter money. In 2018 Kirk Cousins got a 3 year, $84 million contract. Now THAT’S starter money.
I simply do not believe the Bucs will give Jay-Miss a contract that he is wanting. He has no leverage.

I have been saying the saying thing…and the market will not pay him starter money. It’s really a stupid comment to bring Glennon into this. Different, time, place, and circumstance. Doesn’t matter how Glennon compares to Winston. I’m not surprised some here don’t understand about “market value” and how that changes, but a little surprised to see Joe write it. I thought he knew more with all the hanng out at One Buc. Guess not.
I do like one point: the Bucs were prepared to pay Glennon to be top backup salary in the NFL. Guess what? Winston is just that. Something else I’ve said.
Winston’s BEST hope is to take a short term deal at $35M over two years with $25 million guaranteed and compete with a draftee. I love the idea of sending him off to other teams to test the waters. It will only drop his price when he comes crying back.

Gotbucs…..Don’t forget screen plays. The freaking least riskiest play ever designed.
Winston managed to throw at least 2 picks on screens.
But those screen picks are the types of plays I expect to see Winston eliminate if he returns. You would think them types of mistakes are correctable….you would think. All in all I could easily see a better version of Winston in year 2 of this offense. I’ll be excited if he returns.

I sincerely hope that Winston feels out the FA market. And I will have my fingers crossed that there is a coach out there that thinks that he can fix Winston and signs him. I don’t care which Veteran QB that BA signs because I know that “no” veteran QB will turn the ball over to the other team more than 1/5 of our offensive plays. The bottom line is wins & losses. Our 5th year rookie never got anywhere close to being what he was signed to be. And a good veteran coming in will win more games than Winston, and could train a draft pick for the future too.

The Bucs should let Winston walk. He has hit his ceiling and will not get any better. He’s a 5 year veteran for goodness sake. What you see is what you will always get.
If the Bucs do decide to keep him, the contract should have an extremely low base, but packed with incentives.
Jason Licht is still trying to save face for drafting Winston #1 overall. He will try to keep him at all cost. If they keep Winston and he continues to cost his team games (which he will) then at the end of next year Winston should be cut loose and Licht fired.

Yeah, there is no way any teams will want the QB that led the league in yards and was second in scoring and TD passes. They will stand pat with their Minshews, Griers, Trubiskys, etc. Short term memory fans here. If he was the QB somewhere else and we were dealing with the Glennon/McCown controversary we would love to have Winston. Oh well, dumb fan bases will be dumb fan bases.
I mean old man StPete claims above that the receivers carried Winston, and in the same paragraph says that QB is the most important position. Very confusing post but he is old so I will cut him some slack.

How many pick 6s ended games this year that he had a chance to win on the last minute of the last drive…. Even if it wasn’t a pick 6 he still threw a ton of games away!! It’s not the number it’s the context!!! That is why you are wrong about him Joe and why there’s no market for him and why there was for Glennon…. Glennon may not have lit it up but when he was with the bucs he didn’t throw the game away either! He also had a horrible offensive coordinator everywhere he started

TouchDownTampaBay……Those are good points but I think you gotta realize that any move to move on from Winston will done with upgrade in mind.
It’s now like Bruce is going to downgrade and hire Fitzpatrick or Tannehill or someone that will remind us of Glennon/McCown. He’s gonna upgrade with a Brady or Rivers…….Or maybe a suprize trade for Big Ben or Carr……..And yes, you can debate all them names and if they are upgrades but if Bruce pulls the trigger he’s believing it is an upgrade.
I firmly believe the mindset here is to get better QB play then we got in 2019. That will either be an improved 2020 version of Winston or a new QB all together. Bruce did not come here to downgrade at QB. His whole philosphy revolves around the QB. He dubbed himself the whisprerer!!!

TBBF … As much as I dislike the transition tag, I don’t think we have any choice because of the timing AND because of Shaq. We can’t let Shaq hit FA, and a transition tag is too low in his case. I’d franchise tag Shaq on 25 Feb for $16 mil as an OLB, then work out a long-term deal once FA opens on 18 Mar (I’d love to see him do a $16 mil a year deal for 4-5 years, with about half of that guaranteed … but it MAY take more). If Shaq doesn’t accept a long-term deal, he’s still ours for 1 year & we could tag him again next year if need be.
Bucs can manage the cost of the transition tag for Jameis and still be able to sign our UFAs AND afford a quality veteran backup QB AND quality Safety in the process. Draft the RT, RB & DT we’ll still need to fill remaining holes and we SHOULD be competitive this year. We’d probably need to pass on re-signing Perriman and also release Brate to ‘make budget’ but we’d still have an excellent team.

And for those saying there’s no market for Jameis, none of you know that to be true because FA won’t start for about a month & a half. Even using the transition tag concerns me because of 2 teams in particular who won’t be drafting high enough this year to find a starter-capable rookie: Bears & Colts.
Bears have an excellent defense (#4) but meh offense (#29). Colts have an OK defense (#18) and an OK offense (#16) that includes an excellent rushing attack (#7). Colts draft #13 but the Bears have no 1st round picks this year. Neither Jacoby nor Trubisky are the answers for those 2 teams. I wouldn’t be surprised if 1 of the 2 made a play for Jameis IF he hits free agency.

Defense Rules……..That’s a pretty solid plan there but also remember when your talking CAP space that long-term deals give you much more flexibility then franchise tags. You can move some of them CAP hits around to free up more room this year if it’s needed. Franchise tags are 100% CAP hits.
Additional money could be freed up as well with a few guys who can be restructured. And If I’m the Bucs I would talk to Jensen and write him up some more guaranteed money and extend his contract. Lower his CAP hit win/win.
Also trade away OJ so we can draft a Edge player to pair with your DT. Must start planning on life after JPP/Suh.

Nothing exciting about this it’s pretty depressing that he threw for that many yards and touchdowns but lost that many games and were never a threat to make the playoffs. Guy wants 30 million but the general sentiment is we’re a quarterback away from the playoffs.
I wish Winston was more self aware, his arrogance is beyond any athlete with a losing record I’ve ever seen. The will be a market but not at his price, it will be easy to let him test the market, we wont need to franchise him because every team will low ball him

Good riddance. I think $15 is silly given his production… even I would want him back at $15. Somebody will pay him a base somewhere in the $20s and add in some incentives to get him to $30+ if he ever figures out how to play QB for an entire season at an elite level. Heck, it might even be us… but before we tether ourselves to Blameless for any length of time we better be 100% sure there’s no interest from Brady or Rivers… 2 of the best bridge QBs to a rookie I can think of… ME and GODwin wouldn’t miss a beat.

Touchdowntampa- Winston has had 5 years of the same play? If his stats are so tremendous. Why do the Bucs still manage to not make the playoffs? Another commenter said you have to look at the context of the games was spot on. The 3 and outs right after the defense is gassed after one of his picks. The overthrows to wide open receivers. The errant fumbles. The wide open receivers he completely overlooks and then throws into triple coverage. Winston is back up material only. The Glazers can get a back up with less interceptions, lower price and probably win more games. Signing is just prolonging the inevitable.

Please don’t act like Jameis doesn’t give the ball away more than ANYONE IN THE NFL. His poor play outnumbers all of giants peers. It’s take 38 y/o Phillip Rivers and all 20 of his INTs. That is still ten less than Jameis.
You can’t be so obtuse into not rationalizing the entire picture when evaluating the shortcomings of our team. Number one culprit above all else: turnovers. It’s a lie to try and avoid seeing them when evaluating the level of suckage of this team.

I would sign Drew Brees in a heartbeat. The Saints likely can’t afford him and owe him $20mil against the cap. He’s likely a $45-$50 million hit for them. If you can have 2 years with Brees it’s enough for a young QB to learn from and likely go deep into the playoffs.

Who are we kidding; the Bucs not resigning or tagging Jameis would actually be the best scenario for him….its not like Tampa Bay is a model franchise that has their sh!t together…They should be happy with any half-way decent QB that wants to play for these owners, in this city, and for this fanbase…
Run Jameis run…Bucs history shows that usually our QB rejects have to get out of Tampa to succeed…Jameis is just the latest example of that…I’m hoping he lands in New England…

At least 813bucboi sobered up and made sense on this one!!!!!!!!!!!! I would not give any qb a second contract unless he was dragging the team to playoffs and making pro-bowls, (and alternates do not count)
It’s too much money at that position, and a huge advantage to have a rookie contacted QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!
