You hear coaches talk about it often. If a defender is going to give up a pass play, don’t let it be a big play.
It seems this season Carlton Davis took that philosophy to heart.
One great thing about the 2019 season is that for one of the rare times in the Lost Decade, the Bucs had good cornerback play. At least in the final stages of the season.
Yes, Bucs coaches seemed to have developed both Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy-Bunting. But the coaching seemed to rub off on second-year corner Carlton Davis as well.
NextGen stats recently put out data connected to the Super Bowl, naming defensive backs who have given up the fewest yards-per-catch. Tyrann Mathieu led the NFL, giving up 5.3 yards per catch.
Davis wasn’t far behind. He was fourth-best in the NFL in yards allowed per pass (6.3 yards).
If somehow the Bucs can keep their free agent defenders, the only soft spot on the defensive side of the ball would be the safties. Yeah, Jordan Whitehead is a punishing tackler, but he cannot be a one-man band at safety.

Davis definitely improved over the course of the season, but it is very hard to call it a good year for him even with that stat. Our pass d was horrendous for a good half of the year and Davis was a culprit along with Stewart and Hargreaves.

I wonder what if anything Eric Berry might have left in the tank? He recently expressed an interest in returning to the gridiron. If he’s healthy, what a great roster addition for the young DB corp to learn from.

If we can add that premiere safety and keep the D together, that side of the ball is getting so bright, I might have to buy a pair of sunglasses.
But seriously, this is pretty much what I expected when Bruce said the secondary was “fixed”. Since we didn’t draft Deion Sanders, I expected it would take time. But that it would gel at some point last year. And I expect continued improvement.
That being said, Licht and Allen have their work cut out for them to keep the band together.

Yeah you could see it in his rookie season. Carlton can flat out cover. He only got better this year. He just has an innate ability to stick right on a receiver……Even the passes that do get completed on him he is right on his man and always seems to be in great position.
He got even better last year. Kudos to coaching. If he can develope even further that would be amazing. He is turning out to be a very very solid draft pick.

Yes mark and Bowles has a history with getting and making great use of a dynamic safety.
I’d love to know what Todd thinks. Having an elite safety may be a pivitol piese to make his defense go at full capacity…….For that reason I would be super excited if we took that position at #14. Could you imagine restoring the defense we ended the season with and adding a new dimension with a playmaking safety? I could legitimately see us being one of the top defense in all of football if the cards fell right.
I don’t know much about these first round safety’s but two of them played in the Championship Game. The Clemson guy looked awesome. He was right on the ball on every play!! I would trade up for that guy if Bowles loves him…..That Delpit guy that everybody here hypes looked like a lost boy. Only game I saw him in but I don’t wanna see no more. He glat out sucked……..But if Todd sees something I don’t I’ll be on board.

Yeah, I have COMPLETELY lost it at this point too. I use to watch TOO much TV and I guess it messed me up sometime. Cause I don’t believe a word I hear on TV anymore, it’s ALL over I bet. What is a TV show in the first place? A way to inform and entertain all of us I guess.

Yeah it would be great to get a world class safety but it’s not a huge need. Delpit looks great but we need one of those big OT’s far worse…then a bruising big RB.
Our defensive backfield looks GREAT. SMB is the little guy at 6-0 195…and he’s our ball hawk. Our other two have size for CB’s…a matched set with both 6-1 205. No more tiny guys like Hargreaves getting abused.

My house was built back then in 2001 because I think that I heard that ONCE upon a TIME in SOME way. Not sure but I purchased it in 2013 before my Mother passed away. She is NOT dead yet though because I just saw her with My Sister last night at the nursing home

How many times is enough for me? After that first NFL pass was a pick 6 it should have been the last pass too. Glennon would be in the very next play if I could help it because I could see what we had in him all along, a decent QB! Not going to argue with ANYTHING that I just said for a reason too. Don’t anybody here dare criticize Davis. He gave up less than 50% completions. Shut down Hopkins. Absolutely has the makings of a shutdown CB. Look for Davis, SMB, and Dean to be the best trio of CBs in the NFL next season.
