Secret To Fixing Jameis

In the eyes of one national columnist, way too many Bucs fans are not seeing the forest for the trees.
Brett Sobleski of Bleacher Report understands why some Bucs fans are going mental with the thought of bringing back Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Sobleski is of the mind Jameis is low-hanging fruit. The trick to getting Jameis to cut down on the picks is simple, he types. Beef up the offensive line.
Of course, Sobleski, predictably, is not a Donovan Smith fan and thinks right tackle Demar Dotson is toast. So the first step in helping get Jameis right is drafting a new right tackle. And the target should be Louisville tackle Mekhi Becton.
Winston made plenty of mental mistakes, but he also faced a lot of pressure last season (47 sacks, 54 hits, 60 hurries).
Left tackle Donovan Smith is signed through the 2021 campaign, whereas 34-year-old right tackle Demar Dotson is a free agent. The width of the pocket is vital in Bruce Arians’ dropback passing scheme.
As such, the addition of the 6’7″, 369-pound Mekhi Becton would be a logical move. And his size belies his movement skills. The Louisville product, who’s played both sides, displays a smooth pass set and can mirror much smaller edge-rushers.
The first thing Joe has to ask is if this Becton can run block? Joe is not yet in draft mode; the 2019 season isn’t over yet. And then there is free agency.
But Joe is smitten with South Carolina’s Javon Kinlaw, who sounds like a clone of Ndamukong Suh. Currently, that’s where Joe would lean.
But if Becton is as good as what some folks have written, Joe’s OK with that. And then if you have to trade up from the second round to get J.K. Dobbins, then do it.
Of course, Joe heard what Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians said about drafting offensive linemen high, so Becton could be a pipe dream.

Winston is garbage but I am all in favor of continuing to fix the team through the draft. the 2019 draft was a good one. 2018 draft was good. 2017 ok 2016 disaster.
Im ok with another mediocre season if we continue to bring in young players that can play. Winston is garbage. Franchise him, tag him, let him walk. It makes no difference the team should improve. I would personally offer Winston 65 million over 3 years 1st guaranteed…….or bring in a vet at 1/2 price. The QB position isn’t as important as a good team around the qb in our situation.

Normally LT is supposed to be more talented than most RT’s. If we’re gonna select an olineman with our first pick, please select the best LT and let him compete with Smith at LT. The winner stays at LT while the other slides over to RT. …and I don’t care if Smith doesn’t like it. If he gets beat out at LT then it’s good for us. This baloney he can’t play RT is BS. He knows that LT’s make more money than RT’s and it’s the reason why he uses the excuse that he can’t play RT.

If we draft Becton or Kinlaw I’ll be happy as hell. I’m leaning towards Becton. You can’t teach 6’7 369. That’s a big dude and I’d be surprised if he was bad at run blocking.

More fun speculation.
Joe – is it reasonable to think BA said those things last year (and preciously) meant it and will do it anyways? If the next HC is on his staff now, it could be a strong possibility that he keeps his word (drafts for the next HC) and it helps the Bucs.
This coaching staff has shown an ability to coach vets and develop rookies better than we are used to in these parts. Exhibit A Bucs Secondary.

The NFL is a joke anymore. Too much money in this world now. How much money do we really think there is on Earth? When will this ALL end because I want to buy the Buccaneers NOW! The Glazers are making my beloved Bucs a joke these days. What is a franchise these days? Because our franchise use to be Vinny Testeverde at some point. I don’t want Winston as my franchise player either Mr. Glazer. Malcolm wouldn’t either because he knew what to do when he bought the Buccaneers, hire a smart GM like John Lynch. I want him in Tampa next or I will make it happen if I have to. I am done on Earth if I can’t buy the Bengals now. Because I know what they REALLY want to do in the first place. Trade the number one pick to a TEAM who doesn’t know who Burrow could be in the first place. He could be the best possible QB to develop like Mahommes. Good article, but someone needs to tell Sobleski that the Bucs are picking #14 this year. Georgia’s Andrew Thomas is listed as the top OT, but Louisville’s Mekhi Becton is listed right underneath him. Very good chance he’ll go in the Top-5 or at least the Top-10 IOW (every team needs OTs). IF we draft an OTin Rnd 1 (as opposed to a DT or QB), more likely it’d be someone like Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs or Bama’s Jedrick Wills IMO.

Cincinnati has become MY franchise because of what has been done in Tampa. Joe Burrow is a franchise player to the Bengals fans at this point and I want him to be in Tampa. Will the Glazers EVER sell this TEAM again because it is time to SELL at this point. The NFL is finished if they don’t sell the TEAM because no one knows what to do anymore to make their TEAMS better. How much are football TEAMS worth in the NFL at all in this case. Must not be much at all because the Glazers made us worthless. The Buccaneers were sold once for the same reason. I heard the RAPTURE is coming soon and I cannot wait for it. I hope it happens so I can be with my Loved ones again. We will be together again soon if I can help speed up time. And I will CREATE time travel if that is the case. I remember a time I was much happier than I am at this moment and I want that back right NOW if God would give it to me and I think that was His plan in the first place. I don’t see as an accuracy problem. I see it more as three pronged issue. 1) Overconfidence in his accuracy. Trying to fit in too tight of a window. 2) Not reading defenses properly. Not seeing those pesky linebackers. 3) Too many desperate heaves on high risk high reward throws.
IOW the same traits that got the 30 picks are the same traits that got the 5000 yards and 30 tds. If he cuts down on the picks he will naturally cut down on the yards and tds.

The LAST GM in Tampa Bay should have been Rich McKay and you ALL should know this. Look at all the talent he brought to the Bay. I could see it right away but it took a little longer to be CERTAIN. In 2018, Fitzpatrick and Winston threw for MORE YARDS, TDS, AND FEWER INTS, than JW3 did in 2019.
No one is arguing Winston’s production. Yards and TDs are important.
But consider how counter-productive his turnovers are.
Look at his career TD and INT percentages.
2015: TD% 4.1% INT% 2.8%
2016: TD% 4.9% INT% 3.2%
2017: TD% 4.3% INT% 2.5%
2018: TD% 5.0% INT% 3.7%
2019: TD% 5.3% INT% 4.8%
If his yards and TD% rise, Then INT% rises as well.
If you play recklessly, with little concern for the consequences, your offensive production may rise, but your negative consequences also rise proportionately, at least in Winston’s case.
As I’ve argued repeatedly, you need BOTH: Production while also taking care of the football. The best QBs demonstrate BOTH of these criteria, which is why I have repeatedly suggested the following criteria for elite QB play:
1) A TD/INT ratio of at least 2:1, as a MINIMUM
2) TD% greater than 5.0%
3) TD% minus INT% greater than 3
Jameis Winston has NOT ever done this, not even for one year despite 5 tries.
The QB with the HIGHEST number for TD% minus INT% is usually the MVP!

BTW: Look at the season stats for most of the QBs drafted AFTER Winston, and see if ANY of them have met all three of my criteria above. Then see how their teams fared in those seasons.
The best “bang for the buck (?Bucs)” is a 1st round QB on a rookie contract.

Every other Qb in the NFL has HOF caliber offensive lines in front of them.
Only poor Jameis has a garbage offensive line, and dumb receivers that run horrible routes, and a defense that doesnt completely shut out the opponents, and on and on and on and on……what else can we find to explain away the actions of a guy that has been making horrible decisions on and off the field since forever?
Can Becton teach Winston to not throw interceptions on the first pass of the game? Can Becton teach Winston that you can’t lob passes on comeback routes or they’ll get returned for six the other way? If not, then he can’t fix Winston.

That article from bleacher report is trash. The reason why he faced a lot of pressure is because he was the 2nd most blitzed QB in the NFL. Number one on the list is Russell Wilson.
Opposing defenses *have* to blitz because the Bucs O-Line is very good and defenders can’t get to the QB with a four man rush. Now, if you want to count TEs and RBs as part of the offensive line then fine, those guys have to be better but the front five were good last year. Doesn’t mean the line can’t improve.
Many of Jay-Miss’ sacks this year were self-inflicted. Not all of them sure, but many were.

The book on manbeast Mekhi Becton is that he is the best run blocking OT in the country. Louisville averaged over 200 yards rushing in the 8 games he played in.
The only question on Becton is his pass blocking because he didn’t get much of a chance to do that.
The problem I see is that when the mocks 1st started the OT\s were ranked #1 Thomas (GA), #2 Wirfs (Iowa), #3 Leatherwood (AL). #4 Wills (AL), #5 Jones (Houston), #6 Jackson (USC) and #7 Becton (Louisville). Now Becton seems to have leap frogged the group to #1 or #2.
Leatherwood went back to school for 2020.

Nicely done, but don’t expect this Joe to bother with stats or analytics like that. You won’t find any stats of that sort to support anything other than this is exactly what Jameis Winston is, you have to take the bad with the good.
If he has a middle of the road passing year stats wise, he will likely be middle of the pack in turnovers. If he has a great year stats wise like this year, he will likely lead the league in turnovers. It’s the one thing about his game that is consistent.
You can’t be a consistent winner with this style of play. It just won’t work.

Who led the NFL in “Time To Throw” in 2017? Current Bucs backup Blaine Gabbert making five starts in Arians’ offense in Arizona, and Arians says injured Gabbert is a perfect fit for his offense.
Jameis in 2019? He’s at 2.7 seconds snap-to-release through three games.
Yes, Jameis is holding the ball too long. Jameis admitted yesterday at One Buc Palace that he’s done his share of that trying to make plays. Talk to Arians long enough and he’ll definitely tell you his QBs have to get the ball out quickly to thrive.
Compared to the rest of the league Jameis has always taken longer to throw than most – 2.88 seconds average in 2016, 2.77 in 2017, and 2.80 last year.

Historically speaking, History has caught up with Jameis and the Buccaneers. You are what you are they SAY and that’s because things NEVER change. That moment you REALIZE this is 2019 and the Buccaneers themselves. What is the WORST franchise to exist in football by the way? I would ARGUE that it’s the Buccaneers hands down after 50 years. Why? The only person that can fix Jameis is Jameis. It is like an alcoholic realizing that his drinking is the problem, not everyone else. He has to get past the we ballin crap and become a professional.
The absolute epitome of Jameis so far is in how he ended the season. The Bucs could have had a tied record at 8-8, the rest of the team was playing pretty damn well, and he throws a pick-6 with the first pass of overtime.
Then says he’s ballin’.
Blow that. He is the root of the problem. Only he can change it, for the draft to make the team stronger, I agree, Licht actually, almost, seems to be getting there on picking players.
Becton would help the team, not Jameis, but if he is gone grab Delpit ot McKinney and then take a QB, RB, and O-line. Big drop off after Becton

D-Rome Thanks for bringing a little perspective and also pointing out that it’s not just the front five who figure in on pass pro. I joke…sort of..that if BA isn’t going to use TE’s in our passing game draft a tackle and put a # in the 80’s and call him a TE. Imagine a big guy like Vea and many other big guys who can catch as well. They wouldn’t be able to get separation so would never be primary targets but the occasional toss when they are uncovered would work and it could help our pass pro.
ROJO can catch the ball…he can run the ball..but he cannot block worth spit.
Maybe the complementary bruiser we draft at RB could help.

So you want to own the Bucs! I get your motivation and actually if we ALL owned the Bucs it would work out better. When Sternberg was trying to rape St. Petersburg’s downtown and waterfront many of us thought if we’re going to spend that much money simply buy the freaking team and keep it at the Trop until we recaptured the investment. Not being profit driven we could have had free parking and low ticket and food prices. Would that have helped attendance?
BTW Stinky…we could move to Green Bay where the fans DO own their team.
When Green Bay did their extensive remodel of Lambeau…virtually the same cost as a new stadium…they were the ONLY team to rebuild or build a stadium at the projected price. Yankee stadium OTOH The original pricetag of $24 million ballooned to $120 million.

I would love a beast type O-lineman at 14, supposing one of the top 3 QBs doesn’t fall out of the top 10. (if one of the big 3 are there outside 10 the Bucs need to move up and grab the Q)
That said they should look to trade into the back of the 1st round then and get one of the so called 2nd tier QBs in this years class.
JW moves into pressure and sacks, some of these are on him.
No matter what upgrade/s at tackle is a must.
