Once upon a time, retired Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia started 24 games for the Bucs and threw just 10 interceptions.
No, he didn’t sell his soul to the devil to accomplish that.
Garcia has spent time as an analyst on NFL Network in retirement and now is part of pre- and post-game shows for the San Francisco 49ers.
Today, Garcia weighed in on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and his status as an NFL starter. Here are the highlights from his chat on WDAE radio:
Referring to Jameis’ on-field decisions, Garcia said there were “a lot of moments wondering why he did what he did.”
Jameis is not yet “dependable on the football field,” Garcia said, but it’s clear Jameis “has the ability to make every single throw on the field,” in addition to making plays. I’m not saying, ‘Hey, pull the rip cord now.’ It’s tough to find a good quarterback in the National Football League.”
Garcia said the Bucs likely just have to keep working on Jameis’ flaws, as well as the team’s. “They put big numbers down. They’re able to throw the football all over the place. … Improve the running game so it doesn’t fall on Jameis Winston every time,” Garcia said.

Garcia was horrible!
He didn’t throw an interception because it wouldn’t throw it!
If his first option wasn’t there, he got happy feet and started running all around and would usually take a sack or dump it off

The 2007 season was such a blur that I had to look it up. Garcia threw 13 TDs that year but Earnest Graham (Earn-It Graham) had 10 rushing TDs. The Bucs defense was one of the best in the NFL. It was a fun season and as most of us already know, the last time the Bucs were in the playoffs.

I trust BA also Sport, but I’m getting the feeling that his hands are somewhat tied. If we don’t tag Jameis by March 10th, we run the risk of having NO QB when FA opens (others MAY make him an offer he can’t refuse). In that case we’d have only one QB (Ryan Griffin) on the roster soon as FA opens & potentially have very few QB options. And since we draft #14 this year, the Top-5 QBs could very likely be gone by the time we draft.
If we do transition tag Jameis, he can still receive offers from elsewhere, but we have the right to match them. If we then choose to let him walk, we get no compensation in return however. So to a certain extent it becomes a ‘risk mitigation’ strategy. It’s pricey (between $24-$25 mil), but at least it buys us some time to look at other alternatives. We could always trade him later …probably.

You couldn’t be more mistaken on Garcia. The guy went to pro bowl with us in 07. It was the first time I can remember not being nervous for when our q.b. dropped back to throw.

Wow if Jeff Garcia was horrible what the hell is Jameis Winston?
I used to curse Garcia’s rubber band arm…he couldn’t hit the deep ball even when guys were open. But he used his quickness and agility to keep plays alive and he actually WON games. “Blameless” has far more physical talent but is inferior to Garcia in every other phase of playing QB!!!
Bottom line…show me the money!!! IE You are what your record say you are!
Garcia was 14-10 in his two years with the Bucs a 58% winning %. He completed close to 65% of his passes with 10 ints in his two years.
JW 28-42 a 40% winning % AKA LOSING RECORD. JW completed 61% of his career over the years.
JW does not have football smarts. Garcia did. JW gets by on superior physical talent handicapped greatly by his decision making…Garcia cobbled together a career with minimal physical skills by NFL standards but great between the ears in football sense. Garcia was NOT a choker.

I scratched my head a lot during the first three years of watching Jameis throw balls that should not have been thrown.
The last two years turned into laughers. There was nothing else to do. I kept reminding myself that last year was his audition year for becoming the 100 million dollar man.
I would have preferred Jeff Garcia over Jameis, even if Jeff has been retired for twenty years.
I don’t see any reason to re-sign Jameis. he can’t make the decisions necessary to be a QB, any QB, nor just a supposedly elite QB.

It’s not that difficult he doesn’t have what it takes, move on and find another quarterback in free agency and draft a young QB who can learn. Winston has killed this team with turnovers and it will never change.

You haters are just infuriating. Who exactly do you want that is going to score 30 plus points a game???????? If our kicker could have made 1 of 3 attempts in the ATL game the Bucs finish the second half 6-2. If he makes a chip shot against the Giants they finish 9-7. If the refs don’t blow a call and negate a fumble return for a TD they are 10-6. This is a team sport you morons. Yes, Jameis made a lot of mistakes last year, but because he was the league leader in yards and 2nd in TDs, the team should have been 10-6. They should have been 10-6 with him playing in a new system and throwing double the pics he averaged in the first four years. Common sense would say in year 2 of this offense he will get back to his career average in picks if not better, and the Bucs will win 11 or 12 games next year. You guys are blinded by your hatred of him. As a real Bucs fan I want the team to win and it is clear he gives him the best chance to do exactly that. GTFOH with your Daltons, Foles, Fromms, Hurtz, etc.

Alaskan… Frankly, I don’t know if Jameis will be with the Bucs next year. And I don’t know if he is capable of playing any better than he is. But that bet makes no sense. He has two more touch downs and two more interceptions than he did last year and you would argue that is better…I’d imagine most of these guys wouldn’t. But in any case, only a fool would bet whether Jameis will be better or worse than last year. I do know this…that Arians has a pretty good idea. And if he thinks so, hope Jameis does have that good year in his estimation…not mine..not yours. He knows more than we do about where he really is and is capable of. We shall see…in the mean time, don’t eat yellow snow.

TDTB… save your weak attempt in applying your perceptions and logical attempts. Will Jameis be better next year…year two? I don’t know and neither do you. But Arians has a good idea. Would we have won the game with the three missed FG’s? Don’t know… the game would unfolded differently. But we wouldn’t have lost the game for certain if not for the pick 6 in Ot,. Win 11 or 12 games next year? Not impossible but pretty laughable. We haven’t even had the draft or completed FAgency. We have no idea regarding injuries. Remember we thought the 49er game should have been in the win column last year? Who really knows.
The point is, you love Jameis. There are things I like about Jameis and his game, and things that he has done I don’t like in both, Should we/ can we resign him? Arians really has the best idea…not you or me. But he won’t use any of your logic…he may think he will better next year because of the growth he has seen this year, or not. But a second year means nothing if he isn’t moving in the right direction in development.

Alanbucsfan … To answer your specific question, my best guess is that if we pay Jameis $25 mil (tag), Barrett $16 mil (tag), JPP ($13 mil), Suh ($10 mil), Nassib ($7 mil) and add a veteran Safety ($5 mil) & a quality backup QB ($5 mil), we’d need to release Brate and not re-sign Perriman. IF we did those things we can still come in about $5 mil UNDER the $210 mil salary Cap we’ve got to play with, after paying for our 2020 rookies. But we’d need to have an excellent draft to make this work (as in a starting RT & RB, plus a key rotational DT). Is that what you were asking?

I mean how on earth could the worst QB of all time throw for over 5100 TDs and 34 TD passes. I mean clearly the dude sucks based on those weak a$$ numbers he put up last year. I love JW and I want him to stay…. however, if I needed one QB to win one game for me and I’m limited to picking Bucs QBs, Garcia is the man. I loved his play and his determination. I can’t believe we cut him free for BYRON LEFTWICH.
We should have kept Garcia for another season and let Freeman learn behind HIM for a year or two.
Leftwich came in, went 0-8 and was permanently benched.

Uh oh, mouth breather alert! Joe literally spelled out how. that ’07 team had one of the league’s best defenses and the luxury of a running game where Earnest Graham of all people ran for 10 scores. Yet, we have some in here acting like Garcia’s lack of turnovers is what led his squad to the playoffs lmao!
Go back and watch that offense in 2007. They were absolutely ANEMIC and Jeff Garcia was a gunshy, past his prime quarterback who a LIABILITY to Grudens offense. He had plenty of “weapons” as well in Galloway, ike Hilliard, Graham and an acceptable offensive line.

Will he play better next year? If he is developing as Arians think is appropriate, probably. Will we win more games? Maybe,,,but we haven’t even completed the draft or FA. Remember when we penciled in the 49ers game as a win? Didn’t work out that way,
Would we have won the game with three missed kicks? Who knows.. had they been made, the game would have unfolded differently. When a last second kick or a pick 6 in overtime occurs,…yes… that did cost the game. But again, was it the holder? Was it a good snap? Did the receiver run the wrong route?

I’m already on the record as saying I’ll be fine with JW IF that’s BA’s choice.
Meanwhile we build the best defense we can to cover for his expected bad decisions. If our D reaches it’s potential I think BA was absolutely correct.
We can win with JW we can win with other QB’s as well.
My only reservations…NO long term deal without an easy out.
And…could we get a pledge from the JW lovers…can we all agree to judge him on the WINS…stats are for losers.

I think your numbers are optimistic.
IMO- Jameis is talented but not a good field general, so he isn’t worth what top QB’s are getting. I wouldn’t mind keeping him if he accepts a lower salary to keep the talent we have. I doubt if that will happen, though.
The D came on strong last year, we have great receivers, and ROJO is showing potential. Why blow it up and not upgrade OLine just so Jameis gets paid?

Alan, if you make $60K a year and offered $70 to stay, but another employer with a better overall product and better history offers you $120k would you stay put for $70K? The NFL is a business and they will cut you as soon as you don’t produce. Jameis would be an idiot to take a pay cut to stay in Tampa. I mean Jesus more than a third of the fans hate him anyway. Why on earth would he even want to stay for even the same pay.

Alanbucsfan … The transition tag is the average of the Top-10. It’s not all that important to me whether Jameis is worth that much or not. My primary consideration is ‘What are our ALTERNATIVES?’ Right now they all stink far as I’m concerned. Most bonehead move was not having any REAL competition for starting QB. Hopefully this coaching staff has figured that out and won’t make the same mistake again. So assuming that we DON’T re-sign Jameis, what are YOUR ALTERNATIVES? And oh ya, how much would that COST?
I agree BTW that the D came on strong last year, but folks need to recognize that a significant part of that D was simply ‘on loan’ for 1 year. We’ve lost a number of very critical starters and other key contributors. Replacing them (even with themselves) will cost BIG BUCKS.
Yes RoJo is showing excellent potential, but who do we have besides him on the CURRENT roster? We NEED a lead dog and a #3, because everyone knows that ‘Jameis NEEDS a strong running game’.
Just about every team carries 10 total WRs & TEs together. Yes we have 2 great receivers on our CURRENT roster in ME13 & Godwin based on last year’s numbers, but beyond that we’re simply average. I would think that folks saw that in the last 2 games of 2019.

I think we aren’t hearing anything because Licht and Arians don’t know who would come here. If Brady or Bridgewater would come they would probably do it. I don’t understand how they decide what to do since the franchise tag is due 3-10 an they can’t speak to free agents until 3-16. How do they decide or is it a no risk it no biscuit in free agency?
I guess the alternative is they could agree to a trade for someone like Dalton and not commenting. When are they allowed to make trades again, right after the super bowl?

Thisisouryear!!! … The trade scenario has left me shaking my head. At this moment we can’t trade Jameis … he doesn’t have a contract for 2020. We could trade him IF we tagged him, but then again … we might end up owning him for 2020 IF we tag him by Mar 10th and no trades materialize. This is really turning out to be a fun game I’m sure for BA & JL.

That take describes me as well. I had club seats for several years before giving them up after 2017. Now, I still watch from the comfort of my home usually, and I, too, can only laugh at the ineptitude of numerous games where the FIRST throw or the first series of the game is a JW3 pick, especially when he simply locks onto his first read and lets it fly. The only thing worse are the SEVEN pick6’s, but they make me laugh the heartiest.

DR- I can’t imagine the stress of whether to tag a player when you don’t know the outcome. Maybe they’d love to have someone so they risk it all and let him walk and they don’t get the player they want. Panic!!!

The funny thing is the Bucs already know what they are doing for QB. Bruce probably knew right after the season if he was keeping Winston or looking elsewhere.
It sucks they won’t revel anything. My only guess is they keep it secret to help with negotiations. Might be some PR concerns at stake too.
We just gotta wait it out and rumors hold little water right now. Once we get closer to free agency rumors will have more merit.

Yeah I really Don’t think you can tag him then trade him. You gotta take care of business. Figure out who you want at QB and go get him ASAP. You can’t afford to be playing games at that position.
If you tag him you gotta do it before free agency. Then the QB you want aren’t gonna wanna go somewhere that already has a starter on the roster. Having that much money going against the CAP might even create some type of contract hangup that prevents the deal from finalizing. Might not even be a option.
If you want a new QB you gotta let Winston walk. Then sign a new one.

Yeah it’s great to keep hearing stories about some expert or former player say how frustrating jameis is. They don’t watch every game live and root for the bucs and they are still frustrated with him and wonder what he saw. I am a die hard like every fan on this sight we watch every game. And every game is important to us. That’s why we have to pull the cord. 5 years and every offseason is the same story of jameis can quit turning the ball over he can be great. How long do you give a guy. Give him 5 more years and ten years of jameis and sub 500 football. And waste the careers of Evans,Godwin,white,David,Smith,marpet, and so on. This team has a nucleus of talent that should be in the wild card Atleast next year. But if jameis continues to be jameis and we put all our eggs in that basket again. And he lets everyone down again. Every post game presser is the same you know those plays are on me I let the team down I have to work get better and not make those mistakes. Next game I see my own 2 picks and raise you three with a picks six to boot.

Think of the teams in the playoffs this year and how we did against them. 49rs we should have beat them if jameis doesn’t throw 2 pick sixes. Seattle had them beat think that one was more on coaching than jameis. Tennessee he was awful and we still should have won if not for an early whistle on fumble returned for td. Houston all on jameis we lost that game. Saints both games jameis was horrible and so was offensive game plan. Should have went 5-1 versus this years playoff teams we played if not for jameis and game plan. But I think a lot to do with game plan was on how jameis played. I saw this year more than ever when jameis through a couple picks early we ran the ball not very well and punted a lot and took the ball out of his hands and he still had 30

LMAO…appreciate the offer but I shall decline…for several reasons.
First I’ve already said that I trust BA. BA has said this team could win with #3 or a number of other QB’s. IE If BA brings him back I’m not going to bet against BA.
Second..my father was a bookie and disabused me of the idea of gambling other than perhaps a wager here or there for excitement. To really win…to be a professional gambler is a lot of work. If I wanted to work that hard I would have done investment real estate.
Third I’m not ALL that flush. Comfortable is not the same as flush. I worked 10 years as a R&R “air personality” on the radio then 15 as a TV Sportscaster. Did OK but could have made a LOT more in real estate development. But I did what I LOVED…and I have no regrets. Perhaps this is why I see athletes as SOMETIMES making decisions based on something other than just the money.
And I should add a final very important reason. I could make an affordable wager with you just for fun or bragging rights, but that would have me betting against the Bucs. Make no mistake. While I do not agree with your take on #3…I like production and accountability…if he stays I’m not betting against him or the Bucs…ever.
If JW blows up and leads us to the promised land I’ll have no problem eating crow…if it means the Bucs are winners what’s a little crow? I expect you and NDOG to be here chiding us and i’ll be happy to take it because of what it will mean…BUCS WIN…BUCS WIN…BUCS WIN!!!

You sound like a true Bucs fan and want what I want, the Bucs to win. I consider myself a rare breed with my stance on Jameis but I know I’m not alone. I can see both the positive and the negative when it comes to him. I am both enthralled and embarrassed at times watching him, but I tend to rush to his defense because of the ridiculously over exaggerated negativity and false “facts” people put into words here.
If he was brought back, I’d be pumped and full of optimism because like you said, that means BA thinks he’s our best chance this year.
If we moved on, especially for cap reasons, I would understand as well and be excited for what the future holds for us.
If Jameis succeeds, I will be too busy celebrating with you to tell you I told you so.

DR – I like your $ Cap Analysis. Not factoring any restructuring it looks reasonable.
The following are all assumptions of course…
To your point about the dates/deadlines, they already know JW’s position in the negotiations and his on field value. Plus they have full control until those dates. They also probably have a good idea as to what a minimum contract deal JW’s Team would sign.
I also believe they have reviewed the FA class and ranked the player and deal to get them.
This is just fun speculation, but the sleepers in the race for me are Carr and Luck. I have no intel on either one, however I would have no problem with them leading us in 2020.
In the end, I believe so strongly in the altitude of this coaching staff, that regardless who our QB is will be able to execute with average efficiency.
If it’s JW or another QB, that would mean less touchdowns AND less interceptions. Combine that with our surging defense, fair improvement on special teams, reduce our penalties to average and I like our chances with any QB BA chooses.
Not sure about the power BA has, but I am damn sure of this, Licht won’t be picking the next HC and someone (BA, TB, other coach) on this roster will be picking the QB.
I think The length of deliberations is BA rethinking JW and setting up one of his coaches for the future. When he steps away, will they work well together?
Fun to game play, but like I said above, I’ll ride with whoever BA chooses.

Cool song (Alicia has a beautiful voice). Not to be disagreeable (hopefully), but I’m not sure that I share the view of us being underdogs. Bucs consistently beat themselves. If that makes us an underdog, then that’s on us.
Last year we had the TEAM that could’ve gone 11-5 or even 12-4 let’s say and made the playoffs. We lost at least 4-5 games because we beat ourselves, through turnovers, penalties, major defensive faux pas (and yes, some bad play-calling). Every team makes mistakes; we’re just much better than most at it.
Until we stop beating ourselves, we’ll never win another Super Bowl IMO. The TEAMS that make it to the big dance simply don’t beat themselves (at least not consistently). Chiefs offense had 15 giveaways on the year (1 per game average). 49ers had 25 giveaways on the year (1.5 per game average). Bucs had 41 giveaways on the year (2.5 per game average) … MORE than those 2 teams COMBINED.
But it’s not just turnovers, it’s other things like penalties. For instance, Chiefs averaged 6.7 penalties per game in 2019, while the 49ers averaged 6.2 last year. The Bucs? We were the worst in the NFL, averaging 8.3 penalties per game. May not seem like huge differences, but penalties very often end up allowing opponents to continue drives or they kill our own drives. Either way they cost us POINTS.
In a season where we lost 5 games by a TOTAL of 20 points, turnovers & penalties loomed HUGE (and were the difference between being 7-9 and being 12-4). We’ve got to clean up our own act IOW.

So the FIRST OVERALL pick in the 2015 draft is not yet dependable on the football field? Well that is quite revealing, is there a timetable that says when he will be dependable on the football field?

I share your philosophy. I’m a Bucs fan FIRST. I will not root against a player on my team. If they decide Jameis is the guy, then I ride with Jameis and the Bucs. Right now, we’re not a good enough TEAM to overcome mistakes, ALL mistakes not just his. I’ve said it all year, we never had ALL phases show up in the same game together. When the offense showed up, the defense did not. When the defense came around, the offense failed. And don’t forget about special teams and coaching.
What the Bucs decide with Jameis will shape this team for the future but the bigger decision will be investing in that defensive line, Shaq, JPP, and Suh.

BTW, those ‘bagging’ on Jeff Garcia need to take a step back for a moment. Stats do NOT equal winning. He may not have been “Mr Excitement” but he knew how to win. WINNING is ALL that matters folks.
I’d rather have 10 TDs and 10 wins than 30 TDs and 7 wins.

D.R. We don’t actually disagree about “Underdog”. I think you are spot on in your analysis but we have the minority view. Certainly we are the Rodney Dangerfields of the NFL…we get no respect. The rest of the nation, and sadly some here who have allowed defeat to bow them, view us as “Underdogs”.

Jeff Garcia was several years older than Winston is now before he even made his NFL debut. Garcia was in the CFL until he was close to 30.
