Terry Bradshaw: Lay Off Jameis!

January 29th, 2020

FOX Sports analyst Terry Bradshaw.

Four-time Super Bowl-winning and Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw believes Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is being unfairly and over-harshly criticized for his interceptions.

And Bradshaw is coming out swinging in defense of Jameis.

Yesterday Joe went to the FOX Sports media availability at the Miami Beach Convention Center, where various FOX Sports personalities hung out to chat about football and so much else.

There, Joe walked up to a scrum surrounding Bradshaw, the outspoken FOX NFL studio analyst. As Joe stood behind a two-deep line of people, Joe could hear Bradshaw animatedly discuss Jameis.

“I’ve seen his interceptions,” Bradshaw said of Jameis. “I’d say about six weren’t his fault. That brings the number down from 30 to 24.

“I threw 23 interceptions my last Super Bowl year. That was 25 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. No one said anything about me!”

Bradshaw actually had 26 touchdowns thrown in 1979 and 25 interceptions.

Bradshaw then admitted why he escaped scorn for his 25-picks season and Jameis has not.

“Hell, I threw a lot of interceptions — but we won!”

Of course, one reason why Jameis has the spotlight on him and Bradshaw didn’t was the drastically different media landscape we live in as we begin the third decade of the 21st century as opposed to the 1970s.

Yesterday, Bradshaw even mentioned how after his first Super Bowl game in 1975, he had maybe half the size of reporters in front of his locker as he faced Tuesday.

When asked (not by Joe) if the Bucs could turn things around in 2020 like the 49ers did this past year, Bradshaw said there is no doubt they could. But a big reason for that would be if the Bucs don’t give up on Jameis.

“I gotta tell ya,’ I like Jameis,” Bradshaw said. “He’s got a bit in his mouth. Now it has to be a little bit more painful in there.”

That’s was Bradshaw’s folksy way of saying Arians needs to ride Jameis’ arse about the picks. “So when you pull on him — hey, hey! — you get his attention a little bit more. He does some amazing things.”

As Bradshaw hinted, he was no stranger to interceptions. Like Jameis in Tampa, when Bradshaw was young, Steelers fans howled for his scalp. The criticism was so intense that it bothers Bradshaw to this day. He rarely attends anything Steelers related in Pittsburgh and held a bitter grudge against Chuck Noll until the former Steelers coach died.

In his first four seasons, Bradshaw had 73 interceptions. And those were 14-game seasons!

So Joe asked Bradshaw since he was able overcome interceptions as a young quarterback, if Jameis could?

“Absolutely,” Bradshaw said. “You know what? He’s an aggressive guy, OK, by nature. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t want to take that away from Jameis.”

In studying Jameis, Bradshaw said he noticed a pattern that really caught Joe’s attention. That may be at the root of Jameis’ problems.

“I saw some gametape,” Bradshaw explained. “He at times, when he really got in trouble, was when he stayed with a receiver [in his progressions] too long. And then he would come off [the receiver in his progression] late and he didn’t see the coverage underneath and he would just throw it right to somebody else.

“He’s a smart kid but you have to go through those progressions [starts snapping his fingers] boom, boom, boom, boom.

“But yeah, I like his aggressiveness. I don’t want to change him. I would keep him — who do you have behind him? Sign him to a one-year deal.”

What complicates matters is that it sure seems Arians has a short shelf life with the Bucs. To bring even a veteran in sets back Arians a year to train the newcomer, much less a rookie.

“Bruce doesn’t want to bring in a rookie and start all over,” Bradshaw said. And as if Bradshaw was channeling Trent Dilfer from yesterday, Bradshaw had advice for Arians dealing with Jameis.

“Coach him up!”

I watched the Pro Bowl, I didn’t see Jameis there. Must have missed him.

  2. BucNA007 Says:

These people know far more about football than our average fan. Arians won’t be be here (his choice) for much longer. No time to coach up a new QB in this system. As much as I hate to say it, we need to give Jameis 1 more year.

  3. FutureMan Says:

  4. Bruce Blahak Says:

WinSTUNNED is going to make a career out of winning a championship as a freshman on a loaded team…all he has, was 5 years ago….plug a real QB in and this team takes off!!!

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Now THAT is the best analysis I’ve ever seen on Jameis’ problems AND ‘What to do about Jameis’. Terry Bradshaw hit it out of the park.

Bradshaw perfectly identified what I’ve long thought was the ‘root cause’ of Jameis’ problems: too slow in his progressions & subsequently doesn’t see the underneath coverage soon enough.

I like what Bradshaw promoted as a solution: ‘Coach him up’. Of course that does bring up the question … ‘Why haven’t his myriad of coaches fixed that by now?’

I agree with his bottom line: “I like his aggressiveness. I don’t want to change him. I would keep him — who do you have behind him? Sign him to a one-year deal.”

Unfortunately it comes down to ALTERNATIVES and they all suck. We don’t have anyone behind him (bad move last year getting rid of any competition BTW). But ‘We are where we are’. Our first ‘decision point’ is about using the tags (no-later-than 10 March). I’d franchise tag Shaq and transition tag Jameis (we can always beat any other offers for Jameis if need be). That looks like our best ‘combo package’ from a salary Cap perspective AND for mitigating risk entering into Free Agency & the draft.

  6. 1sparkybuc Says:

Bradshaw had a team in support. Jameis had a team for his last eight games. Bradshaw couldn’t carry a team alone. Tom Brady couldn’t carry a team alone. Buccaneer “fans” expect Jameis to carry the team. 5-3 when the team showed up.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

Everbody’s got an opinion and they are all over the place on this subject. It’s a good read in defense of Jameis, for sure. There was one statement that stood out after Jameis’ defense:
“Sign him to a one year deal.”
That’s not a resounding endorsement. He didn’t say, “sign him long-term at any cost.”
In other words, the Bucs better have a Plan ‘B’ in case Jameis can’t shake those turnover issues.

  8. Tval Says:

    Truth hurts the HATERS!!
    Terry was Favre/Elway BEFORE Favre/Elway.
Jameis will be the same age as Joe Burrow next season. Lol!!
    The experience is PRICELESS!!!
If the Bucs had the ability to draft Joe, this April, Bucs fans would be TRASHING the “pride of southern Ohio” for the next 5 seasons.
Enjoy your franchise qb, give him an OZ of support in the run game (David Johnson), and you’ll be BACK on the bandwagon like it’s ‘02.
I’ve seen it ALL in this game including Favre/Elway go from their teams weakness to their strength. Learn from others mistakes, if you
can’t/don’t want to remember Steve/Doug in your OWN building.
Enjoy two teams that put their ALL behind their qbs. Jimmy completed 4 passes in the nfc champ game and the haters think he’s AWESOME!! Lol!! Perspective

  9. onetrickpony Says:

every time JW has his arm back to throw, I say, uh oh,will he or wont he hit the intended target, or I’m saying, come on throw the damn ball instead of stranding there dumb founded looking around.Than after the game its the same old song, I have to get better

  10. lambchop Says:

I’m so tired of the Jameis talk. Wish it would just get done with one way or another. Give him a contract that’s team friendly and if he balks, point to the exit sign.

He doesn’t deserve a huge contract yet. The guy plays erratic. If you can’t play consistent, why should the team reward you? Jimmy Johnson is right, you can make great plays but if you make more bad plays then what’s the point?

  11. Tval Says:

“On a loaded team”. Devonta Freeman?? That’s ALL that made it next level. Joe Burrow is 24 on a LOADED offensive team. His top 4 wrs were better than ANY Clemson dB. He has 3 LEGIT top 2 pro wrs. Don’t be DENSE.
Haters expose themselves when they talk of a “loaded FSU team” that didn’t do anything pre/post Jameis for 10 years. Stop it, dummies.

  12. Todd Says:

“Alex, I’ll take what’s behind door number two please.”

  13. SteveK Says:

Think about the era of football Bradshaw played in, and how receivers and QBs could get demolished. Nowadays, offensive stats are easier to accrue bc the rules allow for it.

With that said, the turnovers are unacceptable. Fix the turnovers or get a new QB. 5 years is enough. Inefficient football is not going to win or go to the playoffs.

We would win with a QB that throws for 4K yards and 1/3 the turnovers. We need production without the awful, killer mistakes.

  14. Wombat Says:

30 interceptions….. 6 weren’t his fault. Anyone want to tell me how many defenders dropped errant passes that a half decent receiver would have caught?
He could have had ATLEAST 45 interceptions if half of those were caught….

  15. SteveK Says:

    30 picks

    12 fumbles

    5 lost fumbles

    46 times sacked

    49 intercept-able balls

    7 wins

24 INTs in 8 home games

    Not a $30 million QB

  16. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

“a bit in his mouth”??? Did Bradshaw just call Winston a horse??? Is that ok??

Then he says “he’s a smart kid, BUT….” (in other words, he ain’t)

  17. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

And I NEVER want to hear ANYONE ever again utter the STUPID phrase about how “some of those interceptions weren’t his fault”

  18. Bob in Valrico Says:

My interpretation of terry’s comment on staying on his progressions too long is he doesn’t process what he sees fast enough.Everything going on around him in the game has some affect on this decision making. If Arians team of 39 hasn’t improved this by now with coaching and virtual reality,I have serious doubts that they will be be successful.
The INT I cited the other day in the Giant game where Jameis failed to complete the third and five is an example of that,IMO The endzone view showed Evans with a gimme first down from the time he made his break on the right side of the line of scrimmage. Jameis does not attempt to throw the pass until Evan’s has nearly run out of real estate with a defender in front and in back. In the process he makes a number of rookie mistakes, He doesn’t square up ,he had awkward throwing mission which resulted in a pass well behind and high perfectly thrown to the safety.

  19. Bob in Valrico Says:

    edit: throwing motion

  20. Jason Says:

Pretty much what I have been saying. Jameis is a football savant up until the ball is snapped. After that he doesn’t process information information at an elite level speed.

  21. BucFanDuh Says:

Terry Bradshaw has 212 TDs, and 210 interceptions. Terry Bradshaw has never thrown 30 Tds in a season.. and never thrown for over 4,000 yards. Terry Bradshaw didn’t need to do much to make the HOF… because Terry Bradshaws success was a result of something called the “steel curtain”. Terry Bradshaw is proof that a below average QB with a top notch defense, will make up for the Interception prone QBs poor decisions. Terry Bradshaw should stick to his adorable traveling comedy show, and leave football to the QBs that earned their HoF spots..

  22. Waterboy Says:

Same problem he had coming out of college 5 years ago and still hasn’t fixed it. Look back at Gruden’s QB camp episode with Winston, he talked about how he locks in on one guy too often.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    “Coach him up”…….what a joke…..he’s got 4 coaches……he has had plenty of coaching for 5 years……
Now….the possibility of a quick hook with a promising rookie on the bench….now that may have some affect….
But…even that is doubtful because Koetter tried that…..
The bottom line is we need a QB option if Jameis fails……
What….we’ve spent 4 years developing Ryan Griffin and he’s not good enough….then why is he here?

  24. Ndog Says:

I am going to take a little break after this post as I let some of the CLUELESS leaders get me pissed last night.

I’ll just say this does anyone find it weird that pretty much everyone who is asked, that has played QB at any organized level, is saying that Jameis should be here in Tampa next year?

    Steve Young
    Trent Dilfer
    Kirk Cousins
    Terry Bradshaw
    Brett Farve
    Ndog 😁

Cause they get what is being asked of the QB on THIS team.

Have a great day everyone and always remember perspective matters.

  25. Colonel Angus Says:

“I threw 23 interceptions my last Super Bowl year. That was 25 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. No one said anything about me!”

I don’t care if you throw 100 INT’s in a season, as long as you win a Super Bowl. Of course nobody said anything.

  26. BigHog Says:

Now a man speaks with knowledge of the situation!! I would venture to say FAMOUS can’t win them all….there are some games no matter what FAMOUS do, the kicker has to win it for you (maybe three or four games a year) and there are games when that NASTY DEFENCE has to slowly choke the life out of the opponent (maybe three games a year) it’s about TEAM BALL …every field goal being made …every challenge in our red zone being turned away and the amount of turnovers being minimized…TEAM …TEAM BUCS 2020

  27. BigHog Says:

    Ndog for President!!

  28. Bob in Valrico Says:

N Dog , With all due respect, Maybe you should start with the premise that everybody is entitled to their opinion. Because it differs from yours should not make them “clueless” from your perspective.

  29. BrianBucs Says:

    Nothing surprising here.

Bradshaw defends and likes ALL QBs

  30. BucFanDuh Says:

True.. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I only use red markers, because the special kid in my kindergarten class a few decades ago, said they tasted the best. I probably would have gotten higher Mark’s in art class, if I utilized all the markers… but all opinions matter.
Sorry, no… not all opinions should be given the same weight. Some are just blatantly ignorant. Some opinions are irrelevant to the topic at hand. For example… the flavor of markers.

  31. Anonymous Says:

He is a great quarterback. The offensive line has sucked since he has been there. No clear running game except for his first year. And he has clearly improved from year to year with his yardage and touchdowns. If him a running back and line and the Bucs could very well go to the big game. Lay off of him hell Philip Rivers is just as bad and no one says nothing about him. But then again people in Tampa including the general manager seem not to know anything about football. If he leaves Tampa he will go on to win championships like everyone that leave them. He is a top 15 quarterback hands down!!!

  32. Hodad Says:

    Bradshaw is a clown.

  33. NPRSageBoy. Says:

Bradshaw’s was hit in the head a lot, so anything he says is suspect anyway.

    Peace, out

  34. Waterboy Says:

30 mil is a lot when you see other young guys putting up relatively similar stats or at least very good numbers with about 2/3’s less turnovers. Those 30 INT’s really jump out more than the 5k yds.

    Carson Wentz –  4039 yds  27 TD’s/7 INT’s
    Dak –                    4900 yds 30 TD’s/11 INT’s
    Mahomes –         4031 yds 26 TD’s/5 INT’s
    Winston –            5101 yds 33 TD’s/30 INT’s
    Watson –             3852 yds 26 TD’s/12 INT’s
    Carr –                   4052 yds 21 TD’s/8 INT’s

  35. ben Says:

How can the bucs win in the playoffs with Winston???

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

People live to point to Winston’s five years and how he should be better by now, but they are neglecting a few things.

    • His first coach was Lovie Smith (defensive coach)
    • His second coach was Dirk Koetter (not a teaching coach)
    • Arians has assembled the first coaching staff that consists of teachers that the Bucs have had since Dungy. Gruden was more of an expectations guy.
    • We should be grateful that we got Winston so young, because 4 of his 5 years were wasted

Roll with him. With this staff, it is worth the gamble.

  37. 813bucboi Says:

    ndog & big hog

    lol…

obviously you guys missed jimmy johnson talking about JW….lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  38. Waterboy Says:

Winston played in the same offensive system for 4 of his 5 years so even though the head coach changed he was running the same system. They’re not going to go far with 1 guy turning the ball over more than some entire teams. I’m not against keeping him but I’d let him walk before committing 30 mil of the salary cap on him.

  39. SteveK Says:

    Bonzai,

Wasn’t Koetter promoted from OC, bc of his success with Jameis, to HC?

How can you blame Koetter? Koetter said to Jameis- proof on Hard Knocks- “you cant be the reason we lose games. Only you, the QB, can have that impact” to paraphrase.

After five years, and a number one overall pick invested, it would be outlandish for the Bucs to commit long term to Jameis. Bring in a Vet and draft s guy in rounds 2-4. Spend about $20 million of cap on the QB position- not $30 and save ourselves the pain and heart ache of a shoddy turnover margin with no playoffs. But, it will be “entertaining”. 🥳 woohoo! Maybe Bill Sheridan can go hand out cokes to fans that come to one Buc to discuss the lack of wins and continued losing.

  40. Ljsolutions Says:

What are you talking about Bonzai, if I remember correctly we had to have dirk as our head coach to keep him and Jamis together. The multiple coaches argument is very misleading.

  41. SteveK Says:

    Ljsolutions,

    Thank you!

Alternate narratives and continued excuses are unfair to legions of dedicated Buc fans. Just win, baby!

  42. Buccernutter Says:

Ah man what a great post to attract a certain kind of bucs fan.

I love meeting all the professionals in here that could teach bradshaw a thing or two. A bunch of NFL coaching talent on this thread. If only bradshaw knew that jameis’s interceptions were strictly his fault and has NOTHING to do with defense, ol, or the run game.

If only you guys could tell bruce before he keeps jameis.

  43. gotbbucs Says:

    @Bonzai
He’s played in two systems that are pretty similar. The thing that makes Arians system harder is he gives receivers more option routes dependent on coverages, so in that sense, with a QB that can’t read coverages, yes I’m sure it’s more difficult for the heavy petting Winston. Most of Winston’s INT’s come at less than 15 yards from the line of scrimmage though and at least a quarter of them are on short/intermediate comeback routes on the sideline, and the short/intermediate comeback routes are an absolute must to be able to throw in the NFL.

Also, how is it that he finally got a staff of teachers, as you said, with an almost total focus on giving Winston the best chance to succeed, and he couldn’t have done much worse in the turnover realm? I’m sure he’s great on the white board in the class room (book smart), but as soon as he gets out on the field in the real world (common sense) he implodes.

He’s throwing multiple interceptions in games before defenses even have to try and adjust to a game plan.

  44. 813bucboi Says:

even at 24pick JW wouldve still had the most picks in the NFL….lol…

    @brianbuc is right….bradshaw defends/likes every QB…lol…

“I gotta tell ya,’ I like Jameis,” Bradshaw said.

a few years ago(2014), bradshaw said this:

“I like Johnny Manziel a lot,” Bradshaw said. “He is a tremendous QB and I love watching him play. He is really amazing,” Bradshaw said.

lol…then in 2016 he said this about marcus mariota:

Bradshaw thought Mariota did “a remarkable job.”(in his rookie season)

“He’s the real deal. I like him a lot. It’s just, unfortunately, he got hurt. And I expect him to be much better this year. For all the Titan fans, listen: Give him some time to throw. Give him a running game, and give him some receivers. In other words, you’ve got to put weapons around these young kids, to give them a chance to shine.”

lol…titans gave MM everything bradshaw talked about and he still failed….lol….

so for folks hanging on to every word TB says about JW or any other QB, take it with a grain of salt….lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

So. Terry Bradshaw said the difference between him and Jameis with all those interceptions was ”we won!”

His defense wasn’t one of the worst in the NFL. It was The Steel Curtain with 6 Pro Bowl players. Some guy named Mean Joe Greene among other future Hall of Famers.

  46. ColBucFan Says:

    Bradshaw threw interceptions.
    Winston threw TERRIBLE/stupid interceptions.
Winston threw TERRIBLE “should have been intercepted” passes.

  47. TexBuc Says:

My very un-scientific observation; beauty is in the eyes of the beholder….lol

  48. stpetebucsfan Says:

BucFanDuh and a couple of others have hit the head on the nail.

Bradshaw played with the “Steel Curtain”…in the debate as the best D of all time.

He had Stallworth and Swann…JW had ME and Godwin…IMO the first duo I’ve seen in a long time to challenge those Steeler greats.

Bradshaw as pointed out had a four time pro bowl RB in Franco and Rocky Bleir was not shabby either.

So if we roll with JW..at minimum…we need to get our defense to become a top five D to offset all those ints. We need to get a bruising back to pair with ROJO and develop a running game…and run it more taking the ball out of JW’s hands.

This means drafting a monster RB…a dominant RT…after that it all goes to defense…defense…defense.

If we keep JW..we have the best WR tandem in the league…the RB and Tackle and that’s it for JW. Brate see ya…Perriman…see ya…Barber see ya…all remaining bucks need to go to defense to offset the TO’s.

  49. Swampbuc Says:

What would a four time super bowl winning, hall of fame quarterback know. Let’s listen to the idiots instead, the ones who say the game has passed Arians by.

  50. Buccernutter Says:

Suggesting to take every opinion of jameis with a grain of salt is the dumbest line of the day and a complete reach to devalue any professional opinion of our inevitable starting qb.

It’s getting ridiculous. Ignore anything pro jameis but focus on everything anti. You guys would get mopped up in court.

  51. Alanbucsfan Says:

    1) Today’s rules favor offense- turnovers impact a game much more than the past

    2) Bradshaw had a HOF defense to make up for his turnovers.

    3) Jameis doesn’t WIN

  52. Waterboy Says:

If Winston needs great WR’s, great RB’s, a great O-line, and a top 5 defense to be successful is he worth 30 mil? If so how do you afford all of those other players.

  53. Buccernutter Says:

    1) In Bradshaw’s best season in 1979, average pts scored per game were 20.1. Now it is 22.8. Not a huge difference. Pt void.

2)True. Wonder if Jameis would be a HOF with that defense.

3)True. But name a QB that wins with a bottom 5 defense, ol, AND run game like jameis has had most his career. We could include poor coaching and inconsistency at kicker but that would be even more impossible than it already is to name someone.

  54. Buccernutter Says:

I think I’m just gonna repeat this every time I post.

Jameis does not need an elite run game, ol, AND defense. What is with you guys perceiving it that way? Nobody has ever said that.

It’s clear what people have been saying.

He needs 2 of 3 of these units to NOT BE BOTTOM 5! Which they have been most his career. He was a pro bowler and pepsi roty as a rookie with a good run game and 9-7 with a good defense under koetter.

STOP IT WITH THE HE NEEDS ELITE EVERYTHING BS. IT’S IGNORANT AND YOU GUYS LOSE MERIT.

  55. Stevebobucsfan Says:

What I don’t understand is all these so call Bucs fans keep blaming Winston for the Bucs losses. last time I looked it was 11 on defense and 11 on offense I watched every Bucs game this year. Some losses was Jameis other losses was on position players with fumbles, dropped passes and on defense so people please watch the games and not the highlights on ESPN and NFL Network

  56. Buccernutter Says:

Unfortunately our fan base consists of primarily casual football fans who don’t know much other than what they hear analysts say and googled stats. They tend to think that the win/loss column in primarily on the qb.

what QB in NFL history had a top5, 2 PB WRs, dominate o-line and top5 rushing attack, while also being the highest or close to the highest paid QB in the league?…..

aint enough money to go around to have all that…..lol….

the SB is a perfect example….

    jimmy G…so so QB….amazing o-line…amazing run game….amazing defense….not really a ton of weapons….

    pat mahomes….great QB….ok o-line….ok RB….ok defense…..great weapons…..

bucs have to decided whether they think JW is more jimmy g which requires everything being great around him……or is JW more like PM which doesnt require the greatest everything around him…..

bucs and ravens won with brad johnson and trent dilfer….outside of brady, nick foles has won, joe flacco, russ(beast mode & LOB)

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  58. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Buccernutter-

Yes, it is a team game. And Bucs have had other issues.
Brad Johnson wasn’t a HOF QB , but he managed to win more often than not because he wasn’t reckless.
If Bucs could sign Jameis for $10-15 million, ok, but that’s not happening…
He isn’t worth sacrificing the rest of team’s talent.

  59. SteveK Says:

    Buccernutter,

Wake up and smell the turnovers. Historical level losing is associated with turnover margin. I’m sorry that some Buc fans hate losing and love the team more than just one player. Can’t pay $30 million for less than average performance: due to turnover rate: 25th ranked DVOA QB.

so i guess TB is right….lol….manziel and mariota are “tremendous QBs” and “the real deal”….lol….

JW had a average defense the second half of the year and he threw more INTs…..in 2016 JW finished with 18 INTs….2nd most behind Rivers….

saying JW does not need an elite run game, ol, AND defense, proves A) you’re a nuthugger and B) you havent been watching bucs football…..

again its hard to establish the run game it your QB is throwing INTs and pick6’s in the first quarter…..

    again defenses cant defend pick6’s…..

what we need is for JW to stop throwing INTs to the oppose team….simple as that…..when JW plays a full 16game season, he has 15,18 and 30INTs…..thats embarrassing!!!!!!!!

    anyone see a trend?….

  62. mark2001 Says:

Terry… that was in the old days. The league is much more pass happy…. 25 was alot for those days. BTW…that Steeler D in those years was second to none. And the running game was top notch as well.

  63. Buccernutter Says:

    alan

Brad Johnson?!?!?! you mean the qb with arguably a top 5 defense of all time? That qb was successful? LOL pt void.

I think you guys are still stuck in teh chicken and the egg theory. Of course turnovers are an issue and an influence to losing, however what comes first? The ints and then the bad defense, run game, and ol, or vice versa. I’m tending to agree with young, bradshaw, palmer, etc that state the are more of a result of absolutely not supporting cast his entire career outside of the weapons that we just finally maxed out.

813 you went off on a tangent. TB is just ONE of a WHOLE. That is more than a few pros that believe jameis is, can and will be a great qb.

Now you’re getting into lazy analysis. He had turnovers sure, but the run game was still terrible and he lost his 2 biggest weapons in year one of the new system. OUtside of perriman there was no one. I can count at least 3 ints that were bad routes in the stretch of last season. Also, we were 5-3 and should have really been 6-2 if it wasn’t for gay. So if thats the result, you still screaming ints if he’s winning?! Seems like you have a double standard for jameis and bradshaw lol cherry pick the ints for a bucs qb but not the steelers guy.

“saying JW does not need an elite run game, ol, AND defense, proves A) you’re a nuthugger and B) you havent been watching bucs football…..”

This is just stupid analysis and apparently you didn’t comprehend what i said. Jameis did not have elite defense when he was 9-7. It was good but not elite. You insulted me cuz your point was stupid. It’s evident I watch more bucs football than you with that dumba** line alone.

I will not debate pick sixes cuz that is the #1 pt you make. Those are unacceptable.

Again since you were so far off the first time, he does not need elite supporting cast. If you think that, then YOU DO NOT WATCH BUCS FOOTBALL. Those units have been bad to terrible most his career and when they were good he was successful. Not a debate, but an observation you missed, while apparently watching bucs football.

Year 2 with evans/godwin bck and consistency on defense will speak volumes. Maybe gay makes his kicks and the run game is average.

Either way the guy you spend most of your week hating on will be your qb next season. I bet you hope I’m wrong. Just watch.

  64. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Actually he didn’t say he was too slow in his progressions but rather stays with one receiver too long. His problem is he believes in too much the himerun hitter on his #1 receiver believing too much in their ability to get open in that few seconds needed and his ability to get it to him. Then he gets hurried and throws it to the spot the receiver used to be. This comes down to staring down receivers. It’s funny though he gets to his 3rd progression and by then his 1st option finally gets open and the whiners up here cry he missed an open receiver. Make up your minds people. Jameis doesn’t need to relocate some of these fans need to

  65. 813bucboi Says:

    nutter

he lost ME13 and CG12 at the end of the season…lol…STOP!!!!!…ME13 missed 3 games and CG12 missed 2…..STOP MAKING EXCUSES!!!!!!!

i can counts at least 6 INTs that were dropped by CB and S….

we shouldve been 7-1 if it wasnt for JW….JW threw 2 picks vs ATL and JW had 4INTs vs the texans!!!!

seems like you have a double standard for JW!!!!!….acknowledging gay’s mistakes but ignoring JWs….

you suggested JW doesnt need “elite” stuff around him just average…..but as you stated when we had “average” around him, he still couldnt sniff the playoffs….and the dallas game was the dagger in 2016 that kept us out the playoffs…he threw 3picks in a must win game!!!!!

but sure, go ahead and blame “wrong routes” on the WR….lol….

    i dont hate on JW…..i state facts….

keep on assuming that….you should know what happens to those that assume….if not, you’ll find out soon enough….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  66. T REX Says:

Don’t you mean best comment of the last 2 weeks….cause that’s how long SteveK’s been posting that, pretty much every day.. You must be new to JBF.

Go Bucs on whatever they decide, but I think Bradshaw’s right in Arians might not want to start over again with a new QB….not too many of you knuckleheads have ever thought about that or mentioned it in here.

  68. Buc1987 Says:

  69. Buc1987 Says:

I don’t care who the QB is.

I don’t care who the coach is.

How good the D’s starting to look….

As long as Jason Licht is the GM on draft days this team will NEVER be any decent.

    Get it? Got it? Good!

How come he keeps drafting kickers and they SUCK?

I mean drafting one anyways…it better be a home run, but nope…they SUCK!

  70. D-Rome Says:

This team will not win anything in 2020 with Jay-Miss as the starting QB. For the first time in 17 years I truly believe this team as constructed is closer to a Super Bowl run than ever before, but Jay-Miss will hold them back. At best he’s a 9-7 QB. He’ll never lead this team to a stellar 12-4 or 13-3 mark.

  71. 813bucboi Says:

none of that will matter if JW doesnt stop turning over the ball…..

    hold JW accountable!!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  73. Stanglassman Says:

I don’t get all this offseason pearl clutching about the interceptions. If Jameis averaged 25+ interceptions a year or even 20 interceptions a year the previous 4 seasons I may understand. Jameis averaged 14.5 over (maybe 16 if you consider games missed) his first four seasons.

As far as wins go that’s really not a issue either. Jameis already put up a winning 2016 season, the only year we had a good running game and the defense showed some life. We saw it again this season with the winning streak once the defense started playing better and that was with a run game. We only started losing when his top two WRs went down and the kicker imploded.

The Bucs would be crazy not to give Jameis 2nd year in BAs system. The only sane debate to have is whether to franchise him or long term contract. I can see advantages on both sides of that. I think franchising him runs too high a risk of him having a great year and cost the Bucs to much for his future long term contract. I can understand that some would think it was worth that risk to confirm that he can continue his production and cut down his interceptions closer to his previous 14.5 average.

  74. McBuc Says:

813, not to get to involved with your arguments, but those last two games had a bunch of nobody WR filling in, and an emerging Perimen who had not been very good the rest of the year. If I were coaches, I would give him a pass on those two games. Especially since the kicking fell apart..

  75. Buccernutter Says:

    813

He lost those two for the 2 losses he took at the end of the season!!! HAHA those aren’t excuses. Those are reasons. Funny how things that contradict ones opinion are excuses but reasons when they support it. He also had some of those ints that were broke down on pr for bad routes by the receivers. Come on man you can’t learn if you’re not willing.

Gay has one job! Kick straight and high! Jameis has multiple and not many qbs are going to be able to make up for no run game, high sacks, and a terrible special teams.

Dude we were a few plays away from being 10-6, but since the team didn’t win an extra game it’s all on jameis? Man there were far more aspects to that game besides what he did vs dallas LMAO! He was a big reason we were 9-7. Goes both ways. And I am not sure where you got lost on that but he was one game away from the playoffs which is sniffing the playoffs with an average defense LOL. Soooo, you couldn’t have been further off on that evaluation. I’m surprised how much you contradicted yourself.

Funny how jameis has had nearly the most sacks, bottom 5 defense, bottom 5 run game, worst special teams in the league, terrible coaching from dirk and lovie, injuries to his top 2 targets to end the season in 2019, a new vertical system that is known for high ints, and there is a list a mile long of reputable players and coaches that agree those are REASONS and NOT EXCUSES, yet you guys spend all day, every day on here trying to prove those people wrong and advocate that jameis should be flawless regardless of those blatant weaknesses.

It’s ridiculous. Like i said he’ll be back and I know half of you are PRAYING he fails cuz you are going to get roasted if you’re wrong. Like I’m sure I will be if I am.

  76. Buccernutter Says:

    813 and that’s the pt!!!!

His ints will reduce if he has that! Can’t you admit that’s at least highly possible?

THAT IS THE DEBATE!!! Yes, if his ints stay up with that then you will be right. But I’m willing to bet you wont be!

  77. Buccernutter Says:

    buc1987

Ya so as long as the GM who had the sixth ranked draft in 2019 is the gm on draft day we won’t have a chance? Got it.

He hit the last draft out of the park. Not to mention humphries, kwon, evans, godwin, jensen, barrett, brate, oj, marpet, donny (who is much better), whitehead, perriman, fitzpatrick (even for 3 games), jpp, nassib, suh, AND BRUCE!

Come on man, the licht hate is ridiculous too. He has drafted or picked up some ballers and a big reason we are finally improved.

Not to mention finally gettin rid of mccoy and admitting his error wtih djax who was a cancer. You can name blemishes but those are a lot of his. Unfortunately people judge kickers and gms the same. Only remember failures.

JW has had INTs broken down ON FILM as to why he shouldnt have throw the ball….

in 2016 the closest we came to the playoffs was vs dallas….and JW shat the bed along with headbutting a player….we had an average defense and average run game….and JW still couldnt get it done…..

  88. Buccernutter Says:

This guy is a perfect example of our clueless fan base. Best run defense?!?! Are you joking?!? Anyone with common sense could determine that teams didn’t run when we had the WORST PASS DEFENSE! That is why teams abandoned the run. If you think any ol qb can win with this supporting cast, you need to focus more on learning the game than voicing your opinion. My God, what a dumb comment.

    813

You just completely ignore what’s said just to blabber on about things that were already addressed? Him throwing ints to receivers that ran the wrong route cuz godwin and evans were down ARE NOT EXCUSES, THEY ARE REASONS! Just like having to pass more often cuz the run game isn’t working and having to play keep up with teams that pass at will against our terrible passing defense. AGain we won 6 of 8 games, so why are you obsessing over turnovers? He threw a bunch and still won. You guys complain about win/loss columns for a qb and then when we win, proceed to the turnovers. It’s a lose/lose with your logic.

London game and saints games were blowouts. we sucked in every aspect of the game. What is he supposed to do, win regardless like an elite qb and if he doesn’t and throws picks, he gets blame for the l, but criticism for his errors in a w. That’s ridiculous logic.

We were that close vs dallas and still almost made the playoffs. So he gets all the hate for why we missed out but no credit for how close we were cuz he choked in the deciding game? HAAHA your opinion is bulletproof and that is too close minded to ever be respected.

His high int numbers are a direct result from no run game (all season), terrible special teams (most of end of season), terrible passing defense (most the season), and nearlly the top of the league in sacks. THERE WAS ALWAYS A LEGIT REASON! The reason we keep debating is you think they are excuses when highly respected insiders believe they were LEGIT REASONS! For some reason it’s too hard for you to open your mind that that is the case.

I can promise you a couple of things, Jameis will be back, defense will be better, and his ints will be down. If you don’t believe me just watch.

I completely shut your point down with that one sentence. Can’t win without solid TEAM and can’t win in the playoffs, IF YOU AREN’T BETTER THAN YOUR OPPONENT. COME ON MAN!!!!!! Tannehill had like 200 yards in two games. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

  93. Buccernutter Says:

    LMAO

If you watched the game games, you would know it was more than the ints. They scored 34 and 37 pts. If he throws ints so often, than why weren’t most games blowouts or why didn’t the opposition score 34 and 37 pts?!?! You’re still debating the chicken and the egg theory. Defense sucked those games too!!! THE WHOLE TEAM SUCKED IN THOSE GAMES! Brady wouldn’t have won on the bucs.

If we are 12-6, you gonna complain that he threw 20 ints?! Seems like you have an agenda.

  94. T REX Says:

All negative reports are fake news, and only sources like Breitbart and Fox can be trusted (except when they occasionally get out of line and report something negative too). This entire country is split with everyone in their preferred echo chambers. This is exactly what is happening now with the haters. They ignore all news in support of sticking with Jameis and claim it’s fake news, stats are for losers, Jameis is the sole reason for all the losing, etc. etc. They skim over the pro Jameis articles and bash them to prove their point.

  101. Adrnagy Says:

There is no way those great Steeler teams could have existed in the salary cap era.

  104. BucFanDuh Says:

Buccanutter, normally I say that most fans are idiots. But I will waste some time in saying that your analysis makes you an exception. Keep in mind tho, most bucs fans will place their heart ache on a single player. They will overanalyze that one player, and say.. “that one player is the reason, the only reason.. that the bucs lose.” They think that all their problems will be solved if the bucs replace that one single player. Imma point out a blaring statistic.. there is one single year, and one single QB, that substantiates their hate. Brad Johnson… that’s it, Brad Johnson. Bucs fans will hate on every QB that wears a bucs jersey. It’s in their nature to do so. It’s all they know.
They want to burn Winston alive, yet.. NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM HAS A VIABLE OPTION OR SOLUTION. It’s okay, suck on my tit if you need nourishment. If you want to kick the best QB the bucs have ever seen to the curb, enjoy my man milk to get you through next season. Your broken down vet options, and your rookie nobody will fail. You mad about interceptions? Me too! Winston hit a career high, that contradicted his career average, get the (EXPLATIVE) over it. If you think he will throw another 30 next year, you are bloody ignorant. If you think he will continue to sling it, then you are on target. I just hope the bucs fix their ABSOLUTE JOKE OF AN OFFENSIVE LINE THAT CAN’T PROTECT ITS QB OR RUN BLOCK TO SAVE ITS LIFE. Or… FIX THE DEFENSIVE SECONDARY THAT LOST THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON…or… PUT A BOOT UP THE AZZ OF THE KICKER THAT LOST 2 GAMES…or… CUT THE NEEDLESS PENALTIES WHICH PUT THE BUCS AMONG THE WORST IN THE LEAGUE IN THAT CATEGORY. Sorry bucs fans, your team is garbage. Quit blaming the qb for all the teams issues. Quit blaming that one stat. I know…… I get it… it’s far easier to be ignorant. It makes you sound intelligent for a moment in time. But holy hell… some idiots dont understand that the qb is not the reason why the team has consistently failed for multiple decades. Maybe, just maybe… it’s the team that failed, not just the QB…

  105. BucFanDuh Says:

Most fans who hate on Jameis, are unwilling to acknowledge the fact, THAT THEIR TEAM IS GARBAGE. Regardless of who handles the snaps, you simply cannot win with a garbage team. There is no point that can counter that argument. There is plenty to confirm that you can win with a garbage QB, Terry Bradshaw will confirm! But he will also remind you that even though he played like absolute garbage, his TEAM won.

  106. T REX Says:

I cheer for the Bucs every sunday. They are my team. Winston just had two “prove” it years in a row. He failed both times. The guy has an awful record in the first half of the season. You can blame everything but he sucks too. He always comes back with a mini run after we are eilinated. I called it the last two years. He melts under pressure. Sorry. He’s not the future. In fact, both sides would benefit moving on. It’s not going to happen here. Again, sorry.

  107. Bucsfan951 Says:

Omg!!! I never knew “you simply cannot win with a garbage team”. I must be one of those idiots you talk about… I really thought horrible teams win the Super Bowls every single year. Wow, I’m shocked!

  108. BucFanDuh Says:

951, I’ll assume you are being sarcastic… and not an idiot. But instead of talking through your teeth, maybe you should tug on your balls a lil. Maybe produce a rebuttal that doesn’t make you look like an idiot…

  109. BucFanDuh Says:

Gasp… OMG! LMFAO like woah. Here we go… what do you think is the best course of action. Cut Winston…….. then what? The team has no QB, and the team isn’t good enough to win… what do you do?

  110. BucFanDuh Says:

Now while you are preparing your response… remember that the “experts” in the NFL collectively agree that Winston should stay in Tampa Bay… they think that there are no viable options in free agency.. and dont think the solution will be drafted. Tug those nuts, what’s the solution?

  111. Bucsfan951 Says:

Sarcastic? You’re assuming I’m being sarcastic? I’m serious! I didn’t know “you simply cannot win with a garbage team”. I was not aware of that.

Talk through my teeth and tug on my balls? Talking ish isn’t your strong suit, is it?

I’ve drawn my line in the sand. You franchise Winston for the year and ride it out. I’m even ok with a 3 year deal with 2 years guaranteed, as long as it’s a team friendly deal. If it doesn’t work out after that second year, you blow this place up and start over. I’m talking about everyone from the gm to the ball boy. I’d include the owners in that mix but that won’t happen.

Yes, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the entire team is bad. But here you have a qb that was in his 5th year as a starter and he sucked! He made a ton of good throws but he also had a ton of bad throws. You think everyone only talks about his ints. Well, that’s because those matter… A LOT! If you think the Bucs can win a super bowl with Winston tossing close to 2 ints a game, you are the idiot. You can talk about the rookie kicker, the rookie and second year secondary. Hell, even the overpriced o line and lack of run game. But one of the most veteran players out of all of those positions is… you guessed it. Mr Winston himself. Only players who have more experience is dot. Now, you can include Marpet and D Smith in that convo since Winston himself has been suspended within his first 5 years cough cough.

But while you’re calling us all idiots, please remember that 121 points were gifted, yes gifted, to the other team by Winston turnovers. If Winston was such a lock as a franchise qb, why isn’t he signed yet. Weather you want to think about it or not, even the Bucs organization has their doubts about Winston.

Is that a good enough response for you?

  112. Bucsfan951 Says:

What’s up with you wanting me to tug my nuts? I pray you’re a female at least. Good lord. Again, crap talking is not your strong suit.

The Bucs fan go 7-9 with Winston or 3-13 without him. At the end of the day, both records can’t even get you into the playoffs.

Here, let’s play a little game. Are you ready? Tell me which one of these stats is Winstons stats. These are stats from the careers of some qbs in the league right now.

    1. Yards: 274
    Tds: 1.68

  113. BucFanDuh Says:

1 is Winston, 2 is Stafford, 3 is Rodgers, 4 is Tannehill, 5 is Carr, 6 is Wentz, and 7 is Goff… is my prize your point?

  114. Bucsfan951 Says:

Missed one! #3 is cousins. Your prize is the fact knowing Winston has the exact same numbers as Stafford. Scary, right?

Now about this tugging on my balls. Do we need to dive into your infatuation with them? You never did clear that up. Are chaulking it up to really bad ish talking on your part?

No comment on “my solution?” I bet you think I’m some Winston hater and you read that I would tag or resign him and your assessment of me went out the window. Feeling confused now? I’m sure it happens a lot to you.

So again let’s dive into the tugging on my nuts thing you keep bringing up. Are you at least a lady? If not, it’s ok. I just want to know who is giving me the #metoo creepy feeling.

  115. Bucsfan951 Says:

From here on out, I’m gonna now call you “tuggernuts”

Dude you know don’t how refreshing it is to see an intelligent bucs fan. It’s just so rare. You nailed it in that response. Jameis Winston was drafted to the worst team in the league. A team with a terrible passing defense, rushing defense (outside of one year with schiano), the worst decade of kicking in the league (outside of connor barth’s brief success), terrible running game, terrible ol, terrible passing game, and no weapons outside of vincent jackson. I mean we were bad. Now casual bucs fans think he should be able to put the entire team on his shoulders and win consistently with very little improvement with his supporting cast. Well look what happens, he gets some receivers and has had top 10 offense 3x. We haven’t had a top 10 offense but only a handful of times in our 44 year existence! He is currently #1 for yards and #2 for tds. So we still have a terrible run game, defense, nearly the most sacks and a kicker who struggled and people google his stats and see steve smith on nfl network make fun of his turnovers and all these memes and think they know what kind of player he is?!?! This isn’t basketball. You can’t have 1 or 2 elite players and win a championship. Not to mention everyone overlooking his 5-3 record down the stretch with solid defensive play. So he starts winning and people still prioritize the turnovers? LOL their agenda is clear.

After 40 years of terrible to mediocre qb play and everyone is now picky about who is under center. A qb that set records in back to back games with 450 yards, a rookie pro bowler (regardless of opinions on the pro bowl), tied a record for tds in game, most yards in history at his age, stats nearly identical to peyton manning, currently #1 for yards and #2 for pts, one of the leading rushers in bucs hisotry, in a tough division, with absolutely no run game, the 32nd ranked defense, a kicker who struggled as a rookie, with terrible coaching until now, in the first year of a system known for ints and a pass first mentality, yet people still say these are all excuses and he should compensate for the lack of a supporting cast and still win regardless. The fact that none of these FACTS can alter their opinion proves they have an ulterior motive. It’s all about erica kinsman, crab legs, ubers, and 30/30. Granted I can promise you kinsman was a lie and crab legs was a hook up. It won’t deter their hostile opinions.

I asked T rex a simple question. If jameis started winning, would you cheer for him? He completely deflected. It’s a great example of the mindset of this fan base. They don’t care what revelations are discovered, they’ve made up their mind on a guy they never met utilizing third person narratives and googled stats. The majority of this fan base doesn’t deserve a football team. No matter what they think, they have the best qb in their history and some want to replace him with a near 40 year old rivers and a rookie who they expect to do better in a west coast, pass first offense with no run game and nearly the most sacks in the league. I could imagine them doing so and having them succeed now that the defense looks like it will be good and proceed to suggest that they were right about jameis even though he was never given the opportunity to play with a great defense. Except for one time, and you knkow what his record was? 9-7! Yet one guy here said he still sucked cuz he lost vs dallas. No the BUCS LOST VS DALLAS. Jameis gets the blame when they lose and the team gets the praise win they win. It took those back to back 450 yard games for him to get any credit and once he threw another int, oh man all he** broke loose again.

I think it’s evident we know far more than the majority of this fan base. Just cuz you’re passionate doesn’t mean you’re educated.

Either way, no matter what people like t rex say, jameis will be our qb in 2020 and with a defense, we’ll see who the real qb is. Year 2 in this system with evans and godwin back will be awesome. Hopefully they’ll prioritize the run game too.

I just want to be on record if he gets a defense, run game, or a better ol, or multiple factors here, and still fails, then I will admit i may have misjudged. As will young, palmer, favre, etc. People who know more than posters on jbf.
