The Bucs And The Jimmy Garoppolo Trade

January 24th, 2020

“Jason, remember when you told Lovie to trade down and he thought you said, “Josh McCown?”

There’s how the Buccaneers general managers of the past 16 seasons collectively got worked over in the NFL Draft, and then there’s how Bill Belicheat works the draft.

Those are very different animals.

The Boston Globe fired up a great piece yesterday answering one of the toughest questions in sports: What did the Patriots get for Jimmy Garoppolo when they traded him to the 49ers two seasons ago?

The simple answer is a second-round pick. But the real answer is far more complex.

The Globe explained what the pick led to, and they also tacked on a timeline of what New England did with the pick. That included working a deal with the Bucs that didn’t work for the Patriots.

The Globe timeline is below. Joe highlighted Tampa Bay connections in red.

Oct. 31, 2017: Patriots trade Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers for a 2018 2nd-round pick (43rd overall, Kerryon Johnson).

April 27, 2018: Patriots trade a 2nd-round pick (43rd overall, Kerryon Johnson) to the Lions for a 2018 2nd-round pick (51st overall, Anthony Miller) and 2018 4th-round pick (117th overall, Jordan Whitehead).

April 27, 2018: Patriots trade a 2018 2nd-round pick (51st overall, Anthony Miller) to the Bears for a 2018 4th-round pick (105th overall, Antonio Callaway) and a 2019 2nd-round pick (56th overall, Mecole Hardman).

April 27, 2018: Patriots trade a 2018 4th-round pick (117th overall, Jordan Whitehead) along with a 2018 2nd-round pick (63rd overall, Carlton Davis) to the Buccaneers for a 2nd-round pick (56th overall).

New England then selected defensive back Duke Dawson (56th overall).

April 28, 2018: Patriots trade a 4th-round pick (105th overall, Antonio Callaway) to the Browns for a 2018 4th-round pick (114th overall, Da’Shawn Hand) and a 2018 6th-round pick (178th overall).

New England then selected linebacker Christian Sam (178th overall).

April 28, 2018: Patriots trade a 4th-round pick (114th overall, Da’Shawn Hand) to the Lions for a 2019 3rd-round pick (73rd overall, David Montgomery).

April 26, 2019: Patriots trade a 2019 2nd-round pick (56th overall, Mecole Hardman) and 2019 3rd-round pick (101st overall, Yodny Cajuste) to the Rams for a 2019 2nd-round pick (45th overall).

New England then selected defensive back Joejuan Williams (45th overall).

April 26, 2019: Patriots trade a 3rd-round pick (73rd overall, David Montgomery) and a 6th-round pick (205th overall, Duke Shelley) to the Bears for a 2019 3rd-round pick (87th overall), a 2019 5th round pick (162nd overall, Cameron Smith), and a 2020-4th round pick.

New England then selected running back Damien Harris (87th overall).

April 26, 2019: Patriots trade a 2019 3rd-round pick (97th overall, Bobby Evans) and a 2019 5th-round pick (162nd overall, Cameron Smith) to the Rams for a 2019 3rd-round pick (101st overall) and 2019 4th round pick (133rd-overall).

New England then selected offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste (101st overall) and quarterback Jarrett Stidham (133rd overall).

August 30, 2019: Patriots trade Duke Dawson to the Broncos for a 2020 6th-round pick.

Pretty cool that the Bucs got the best of the 2018 draft-day trade with the Pats that netted Carlton Davis and Jordan Whitehead. New England dumped its piece of the pie, cornerback Duke Dawson, to Denver for a sixth-round pick in April.

Jason Licht has been a fan of trading down in the draft, certainly in 2018, which kicked off with a first-round trade down, followed by the moves above.

licht made his fair share of mistakes, just like every other GM….

but the previous staff failed to develop anything outside of pass catchers….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  2. ben Says:

Licht is the worst gm ever employed ….looking at the record ,yet still here

  3. LaMarcus Says:

Why doesnt no one talk about Licht missing an entire draft class 2016

    An entire class

  4. 40 TDs Says:

I’m so glad Arians is directing Licht on draft acquisitions.

We are in good hands with Arians.

  5. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ I agree, 40 TDs, and would add Todd Bowles to that mix. I think Bowles hand-picked those young DB’s and he also probably hand-picked Shaq Barrett as a Free Agent signing for Licht.

  6. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Licht has destroyed this roster too many times to count, overpaid and for all his incompetence, gets a 5 yr extension. SMH!!!

  7. Tattoodonny Says:

You can say Jason missed an entire draft in 2016, but go back & look at ALL THE BUST in that draft. The Jets missed on pk 20 LB Lee & pk 51QB Hackenburg, Cleveland missed on picks 15, 32, 65, 79, 93, 99, 114, 129, 138, 154 & 156. That’s 11 picks from rds 1 thru 5th. NOW THERE’S A SH!TTY DRAFT! That class SUCKED PERIOD! So get over it. The Browns did (pk 65) Carl Nassib who has done well here, Jason grabbed him. Damn this isn’t fantasy football, I’m sure many of you “Fantasy GM’s” make a killing off of old ladies & teenagers trying to play fantasy but it’s only in your head that you know better! Joe just showed you how well he did in a deeper draft, damn sometimes I feel like I’m reading spoiled children typing online! Grow up. Go Bucs

I agree. It would not take competent GMs 6+ years to put together a team that can make a playoff push.

  9. Wesley Says:

Licht is the worst g.m. in the game. The only reason this last draft was decent was because of Arians being involved.

813 bucboi is the #1 fan lost. Nothing makes sense on what you say. You know why … because you don’t listen. !

Yeah Bowles hand-picked em. Also, I think he hand fed them since they were pups, all of them.

Really, you have no idea who picked who. It could have been the 11th scout intern with one arm.

^^ Haha, very good point, Joseph Mamma

I think Licht is okay. Lovie and Dirk were both awful. I think Licht biggest mistake was not trading th overall number 1 pick to Philly. That sounded like it could have been the Herschel Walker trade of the 80s. Philly went on to two Super Bowls and we are finally picking up steam. Glad Bruce is here. That is the best thing he’s done. Go Bucs!!!

  14. McBuc Says:

GM gathers the talent, the coaches scheme and coach up the players, and the player put in the work and study. It is all related, it does not all fall on JL.

  15. catcard202 Says:

I blame the Bucs scouting department as much as the FO for the last decade of depression.

Nothing is more infuriating than watching the FO pass on guys that all of us on this board saw as future stars or value picks, to reach for players they could have had 2 rounds later…Only to watch what could have, as the passed players go on to shine in another uniform.

Trading up in 2nd (2016) /5th rounds(2019) strikes me a 2 of the most boneheaded moves in recent memory. Yes, I’d still think that even if Gay has a great Bucs career….You just don’t spend draft capitol on K/P types.

Still haunted by the entire 2016 SNAFU…The first 2 picks were bad enough…but when the FO dumped a 3rd (74) & 4th (106) to jump up into 2nd (59) & take a K??? I was like “Are you frickin’ kidding me???” & flipped off the draft knowing the Bucs had screwed the pooch.

I’m not a huge JL fan, but I think overall he might be average….. not the worst.
This off season will be the ultimate make or break for him though.

Agree with your take. In reality it’s hard to judge Licht because we do not know WHO really picked. If we give BA and Bowles credit for this last class then Lovie deserves the blame for the first drafts.

The one area I’ve felt Licht or whomever has made the call sucked was FA. There have been some great successes in the draft and some busts…but FA has been a total failure until this year…Shaq, Suh, when combined Nassib from last years FA class have been outstanding.

We’re still waiting to judge Licht’s BIGGEST draft decision…#3!! If he signs for some big bucks this year then Licht will be OK. If he gets run…Lichts stock falls.
