Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy Nearly Equal

January 23rd, 2010

There is no better NFL draft guru than Mike Mayock. It’s not even close.

Do some serious research as to the accuracy of the draftniks and no one touches the NFL Network’s draft analyst. Not helmethair Mel Kiper. Not Todd McShay. Not Chris Steuber. None of them.

(Shameless plug: Mayock actually does have some competition. Joe’s good friend Justin Pawlowski of WDAE-AM 620 is top-notch, but he’s not paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to analyze the draft 24/7.)

In the waning weeks of the college football season, it was believed that Nebraska defensive tackle/manbeast Ndamukong Suh was light years above anyone else. That Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, himself a stud, was a distant second.

Not so, says Mayock.

In a recent conference call, Tom Kowalski of MLive.com, via ProFootballTalk.com, documented that Mayock said Suh and McCoy are easily the top two players in the draft and there really isn’t much of a difference between the two.

Mayock said Suh reminds him of a Kevin Williams (Minnesota Vikings) but might be even better. Mayock believes Suh is a little stronger in the run game while McCoy is a better pass rusher. However, the differences are small and both players offer the complete package.

Since the Bucs had to go and upset the Saints, they took themselves, likely, out of the Suh sweepstakes. But there’s still a shot to get McCoy at No. 3 which is where the Bucs are currently slotted to pick.

Sad thing is, Detroit picks at No. 2 and they, like the Bucs, are not bashful in to admit they need defensive line help.

Gulp.

For your dining and dancing pleasure, here’s a feature on McCoy.

Disagree 100%. McCoy is a good DT, but Suh is ridiculous. McCoy being a better pass rusher is hillarious. Everyone has thier own opinion I suppose. I just don’t see how anyone would this for a second.

I’m all for Suh being brought back down to earth and having his stock drop a little. It only improves our chance of getting him. However, the reality is, Suh is the only amazing DT in a draft loaded with very good DTs.

  2. aldo Says:

i was thinking, there will be a lot of preasure in Suh, everyone hopes to see the next big thing, and that would be critical in his own story, on the other side, nobody talks about mccoy or price or any other, is all about suh, that helps the other DTs, because all they do, should be gain.

and i was looking, in 1995, Sapp wasnt the first DT, was the second, courious huh??

my thought is, if we can deal with mccoy, draft berry

  3. sgw94 Says:

@JDouble McCoy IS a better pass rusher than Suh. Suh is just more physically impressive but as I have been saying over the course of this season Suh doesn’t have any pass rush moves. That brute strength shit is great for college but doesn’t transfer well to the pros. McCoy isn’t athletic thats very true but he is a tactician in the trenches and in my opinion my suited to a 4-3 undertackle position than Suh. Notice for as many camera shots as Suh had for his bowl appearance, it was McCoy who actually got a sack in his bowl game, not Suh. History will bear out who will make the better pro but Bucs fans shouldn’t be dissappoiinted at all of McCoy drops to us. Either way I still think Berry is the better option for what we are trying to do and picking up an undertackle in free agency who is a proven commodity in the league.

  4. sgw94 Says:

My bad, McCoy isn’t AS athletic as Suh. But he is athletic

  5. Cody Says:

sgw94, I agreed with everything you had to say up until the point where you chose Berry over McCoy. I haven’t seen a whole lot of Eric Berry other than his bowl game against Va Tech where he looked completely uninterested in the game and gave up on every single play that wasn’t right in his lap. Obviously I can’t jugde him completely off of just one game but the positional value in the top of the draft just isn’t there for a DB, even one that is compared to Ed Reed. I think alot of Tampa 2 teams may actually have McCoy rated ahead of Suh when all is said and done.

  6. aldo Says:

agree on tha tsteve, i was watching the highlights on Suh and was looking for that, suh is plain, no surprises, but a lot of strength, and i guess is more easy to gain a body than learn and apply the moves.

i wanna ask steve about this guy price of UCLA, ur toughts??

  7. sgw94 Says:

@Cody I have no idea what game you are watching but V Tech showed so much respect for Berry that they ran away from him on practically every play. He also made a couple of big hits and in my opinion only had one bad play when he couldn’t find the ball on a reverse. Whether we get a great D tackle or not in this draft its still going to be a problem when teams run in the safety’s gap and our guy misses the tackle or when we are playing Tampa 2 and our safety is never there to help on deep balls. Berry will be ready to play from day one and contribute big time. Nobody, I don’t care who they are, can say the same for Suh nor McCoy.

  8. sgw94 Says:

    @aldo

I like Price but he isn’t in the same league as McCoy or Suh. He does have moves though and with better conditioning could be a steal. The problem is I think he will be gone early in the 2nd round and I think we are going to use the higher of our 2 2nd round picks on a WR, or at least we should in my opinion so I don’t know that he would fall far enough for us to get him if we don’t go for a d tackle with the 3rd pick in the draft.

  9. Trox Says:

Gotta have some love for Rolando McClain. Ruud is good, but McClain could be special. I know he played in a 3-4, but I think he could play MLB in a 4-3. I think he could be a real leader for the defense, which is something this defense hasn’t had since Mr. Brooks.

  10. Cody Says:

If you really think there’s going to be a starting caliber undertackle available in free agency that can be a long term solution for this team then I guess I really don’t care who our 1st round pick is but we haven’t been able to find that guy in free agency in the last 6 or 7 years so I’m a little concerned about that position based on it’s importance to this defense. I don’t think I can handle too many more years of plugging the Ryan Sims’ and Jovan Hayes’ of the world into that spot. Besides QB, Undertackle has been probably the most neglected position on this team. I don’t remember for sure but I think Booger was the last high pick that we’ve used on a DT and that was over 10 years ago.

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

The Bucs need a Safety real real bad. So bad, that OSHA fined them $70K for the Super Serious Sabby Hazard. But, if Suh & McCoy are drafted 1 & 2, they might want to look at an OT like Russel Okong, because this would help Freeman and Shore up the Left or Right side. Taylor Mays could be there in the 2’nd round too. I agree, Berry is probably the right pick for the Bucs.

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

Look at Darrelle Revis for the Jets. What a total impact player for them this season. Wow, he is dominating, and the Jets’ defense is scary good. The Jets are the only correct pick I’ve had in the last 2 weeks. They hold opponents to 14 pts per game. They chewed Phillip Rivers up. Manning is better, but how much? Not enough, I’m riding the Jets because of their secondary. Eric Berry can give the Bucs a similar type secondary. Draft Berry & Taylor Mays.

  13. Eric S Says:

Too bad we beat NO. I think we would have had the #2 pick if we didn’t do that. Now we are probably going to miss out on Suh and McCoy. Suh may be the one everyone is talking about, but McCoy is no slouch at all. I think he will be a great player. Eric Berry would certainly help the team, but taking a S that high is worrisome. But with the situation with the Glazers, I don’t see them trading up to the top spot. And it wouldn’t shock me if they traded down to save even more cash.

  14. Jonny Says:

JDouble, dude seriously you should watch games closely, Suh is just a bull rusher when it comes to pass rush, McCoy has much better quickness and moves than Suh, Suh has the tools but lacks the skills that need to be coached for him to become a better pass rusher at NFL level.

  15. JOSH P Says:

McCoy definately reminds me of Sapp… and i will agree Sabby sux and we do need a safety but if we can’t get any pressure on the QB and stop the run we are going to be looking at another 3-13 season.. and im pretty sure STL and DET can mess something up so that we are able to get one of those two guys mentioned above

  16. Jorge Says:

If only Mayock said I’d believe it, but to add credibility #94 agrees…I have to convert, I’ll take CODY…

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

Sorry, mucho apologies all around. It’s Friday, a few Caybrews and I thought the Jets would beat the Colts. Yea , I just woke up for work and realized, there ain’t no way in Hell the Jets take down Peyton Manning. Great effort guys thus far, but the trip stops in Indy.

I’m still picking Berry at 3, as best defensive player on the board.
    Go Bucs!

  18. jvato24 Says:

I wish everyone would drop the we shouldnt have beat the Saints mumbo .. We are 2 games behind Detroit due to SoS … The Saints win cost us nothing

  19. Andy P Says:

@sgwp4 McCoy is nothing of the pass rusher that Suh is and stats bear that fact out over the course of their careers.

In last two years Suh has 19.5 sacks, and 33 QB hurries to the 14.5 sacks and 9 qb hurries of McCoy! Stats are stats and they speak the fact. Also, Suh leads by a large margin in tackles for losses! Stats are stats and they are legit. What do those stats mean? That Suh is around the Qb and RB in the backfield FAR FAR more than McCoy!

And to those that say Suh has no moves! Oh My god! He has the quickness, nimble feet and athletic ability to run around and split double teams. But, no moves!

oh, by the way.. Spin moves for a DT are a big big NO NO, at least if you want to play disciplined defense and that is what Pelini teaches. When a DT spins they leave a lane or a gap and unless thay have a stunt with other lineman or lb to fill that VACATED hole DT’s do not use many moves.
