“Here’s The Problem As [The Bucs] Pointed Out To Me”

A longtime NFL insider spoke about chats this week he had with Bucs officials.
Today’s Shrine Bowl at Tropicana Field is the culmination of a week of team front office members and scouts hanging around with media watching NFL Draft prospects in St. Petersburg.
Adam Caplan is one of those media types in town. For years, NFL fans have seen Caplan on ESPN and heard him on SiriusXM NFL Radio, and he’s worked in the Philadelphia market and for the Eagles, among other outlets.
Caplan made it very clear that he talked “with the Bucs” this week during an interview on WDAE radio. Typically these conversations are off the record, but apparently not since Caplan shared plenty.
First, Caplan predicted the Bucs will slap the franchise tag on Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback.
“But here’s the problem as they pointed out to me,” Caplan said of his chat with the Bucs. “They’ve got 19 free agents. There are some guys they really don’t want to lose. They’re not walking away from Shaq Barrett, zero chance. It complicates matters. They’d love to bring back Breshad Perriman. I just don’t think they’re going to have enough money. With the cap, I don’t know how they’ll be able to do it. And they’re going to have some tough calls here.”
Caplan went on to say the Bucs are high on Ronald Jones. “They said [Jones] is doing better. He’s on track.”
On the defensive line, “They love Carl Nassib,” is how Caplan characterized the assessment from Bucs officials. And on free agent to be Beau Allen, “my understanding is they want him back” with rookie Anthony Nelson getting more reps in a healthy season.
Caplan also noted the Bucs like the practice dedication and leadership shown by Ndamukong Suh. But Caplan didn’t say the Bucs will re-sign him.
But what about Jameis? “If it came down to it, they would tag Barrett first then Jameis,” Caplan said. He explained that Barrett has more value because Jameis is more replaceable given what’s on the free agent QB market versus the edge rush talent hitting free agency.

Shaq is a no brainer but I don’t think Shaq is as effective unless you keep JPP….at a minimum. JPP presents tremendous value due to his ability to go inside or outside, he’s strong in both the run and pass as well as a good locker room guy.

Can only use one franchise tag…..so you can’t franchise both Shaq & Jameis…..you can use a transition tag
& a franchise tag……they may try the transition tag with Jameis….a little over 23 mil….
There may not be enough money for everyone…..in that case, I expect Suh would be last on their list….I believe they want to lock up players for longer than a year.

Got to keep Shaq and JPP. Keep Nassib at around the same pay. Keep Suh if he takes a small pay cut because his numbers are decreasing and he doesn’t warrant $9-10M. Don’t resign Allen and take a DT in the 2nd rd. There are 3 or 4 worthy in that round (LSU, TX A&M, Mizz).
Trade OJ for 2nd and 4th. Use the 4th for a blocking TE. Use the 2nd for O-Line or RB. RB (Najee Harris) in 2nd/3rd or maybe Taylor (Memphis) in 3rd/4th. Needs to be a big bruising back that can pound other teams. This will take pressure off JW, force him to pass less and hopefully decrease the interceptions and fumbles some.
I doubt Perriman will be back due to $$$. WR is very deep this year. I like Chase Claypool in the 4th from ND. Big, good speed, good hands, high points the ball, blocks well and awesome on K/P coverage. He would be a much higher pick if he was on a college team that passed more.
Any of the top 3 tackles in 1st would be good, but I’m afraid BA won’t take OL. I like Wirfs (Iowa) as a plug and play RT.

I’d rather bring Suh back, and let him play QB over Jameis lol. Here’s the deal with Jameis. You bring him back I’ll go 50 percent of the fans would be happy, 50 won’t. Our first game at home if he throws some picks, and we lose because of him the rest of the fan base would check out. Not a good gamble if you’re a business man. At this point, I’d take Dalton over him, and that ain’t saying much about Jameis.

Hmmm, and I thought bunches of folks were totally convinced that we had boatloads of money to play with. This season, he graded out better than 80 percent in eight games, according to the school, and made over 60 knockdown blocks.
The Cardinals rushed for more than 200 yards in eight of 12 games.

I don’t think it’s really that complicated. They are going to have to bust the bank vault for either Shaq or Jameis. To me it makes more sense to go long term with Jameis because you know what you have. Sometimes people throw out salary figures that just make no sense compare to what players are being paid. The average of the top 5 pass rushers are over 20 million a year. That’s a big gamble on a player who has only done it once…makes more sense to franchise Shaq, see him do it again and pay him big. The bigger question is Pierre-Paul. Who wanted to change the contract that had him on the team for 12 million next- player or team- who wanted that voided. Pierre-Paul performance in games he played is over 15 million a year and without Pierre-Paul. Shaq suffers. The less gamble is Jameis because we know, we know he will always throw picks (they will be less) more like always 13-18 a year. We also know he can lead the league in passing yards, deep throws, and almost TDs. We also know that Adam humphries is not playing up to his contract that he got without Jameis and we know perriman has done nothing in his career without Jameis. And Evan though Evans is a stud and Godwin is close to one – they have done it all with Jameis throwing to them. Jameis makes receivers money.
That brings up Ronald Jones, if you were a football team interested in running backs then you would tell the world you live Ronald Jones too. I think Arians is big on 1 year prove it deals. It’s clear David Johnson is going to get cut in Arizona. He may or may not be good anymore but he was great with Arians. Watch out for that 1 year prove it deal for Johnson with Bucs or someone else just like this year with Barrett, perriman, suh, b Allen virtually on prove it deals

“Jameis is more replaceable given what’s on the free agent QB market.” This is the bottom line of what those in the business already know. It’s nice when a media person pretends to get it. However, too many lose sight over the fact the tags are NEVER a desire. No one wants to use them. The Bucs do NOT need to use it, and a transition tag on Winston is overpaying, not to mention it often leads to relationship problems between the player and organization. Winston has already had more than his share of chances to prove his worth. He will likely he half azz and flippant, more loathe to authority that he’s been in the past (coaches at FSU and Bucs, the law, etc) if he is not the annointed one. Joe’s article the other day about Winston as a Glazer business decision should also lurk in the back of readers minds. “Move on” is more real than meets the eye.

OMG. So many fallacies I think. Bust the bank vault of a guy who is a risky turnover machine and who divides fans, can’t behave, and can’t fill the seats? Or a guy who blows away the Bucs sack record and led the NFL overall…with ALL upside? First, don’t bust any vault with Winston, and certainly don’t choose him over Barrett.

The Bucs are high on Jones because right now he’s cheap. Produce the way he did that last two years over the next two years, and he’s done. Period. Even moderate improvments with Jones isn’t going to cut it. You can’t draft a guy high at RB and not be able to get good utility out of him at blocking and catching–from the start. Jones is the best RB ont he roster now…and that is not saying much at all.

If we don’t add another running back for Jones to compete with then I’m done! I’m tired of mediocre running back play. Being high on Jones doesn’t mean he should be your starting running back for 2020. Draft a young stud and allow them to compete with Jones! What’s wrong with having two backs that can be game changers. History tells me that Licht will draft a back in the late round that no one has heard of and had the body type of Barber and runs 4.6/4.6 40. Hope they prove me wrong but this team doesn’t evaluate runnings backs very well. They had Dare as the third down back this year and he had no to the house speed and his vision was average. Barber runs hard for 3 yards. Teams never feared him going to the house. Jones has gotten better but his vision and pass blocking still needs to improve but he does have the break away speed. Get us another game charger with speed!!!

Signing Shaq has got to be off-season priority #1!
Priority #2 is the Dline….JPP, Suh, Nassib!
Priority #3, Sign Godwin to a long term extension!
Priority #4 Decide what you are going to do at QB (my plan would be to target a guy like Bridgewater for around $15-20mil a year for 3 years, etc. and Draft a young guy like Eason, Herbert, Tua, etc.).
Priority #5 Free Agent offensive lineman upgrades.
Priority #6 Perriman
Priority #7 Draft….QB, RB, OL

Additionally, the Bucs would have to be willing to offer Winston transition tag money or more, which also signals to the world the Bucs don’t really want to lose their QB. This is bad for offseaon season ticket drives, and cost more cap money now…when the Bucs need to use it. Let Winston test the market–and he’ll be back to talk more seriously with our team about deal. For all the speculation, I doubt CHI or IND will be interested, not at that price (or more), and I can’t imagine another team ready to talk the plunge on big money for a biq question mark. There are plenty of teams out there ready to pay Wisnton premium BACKUP QB money. $6-14 million. The Bucs have the advantage here big time. Don’t waste the tag on Winston….and don’t overpay him.

Really? Seriously? So what do we have? 28-42…all time single season record for pick sixes…SEVEN!!!! Tons of yardage and TD’s. That’s just it Mike. In his supposed “contract” year…the season when we were going to see EXACTLY what we have he CHOKED and folded like a tent in a hurricane.
So we improved our defense dramatically in the second half with the return of JPP and the maturation of our three young DB’s. And lo and behold we went 5-3 but we should have gone 7-1 for a winning record…something to build on and confidence building as we head into the next year. This put the onus on “blameless” no more “blaming” the D!
We scored 3…THREE total points in the second half of those final two games combined. “Blameless” tossed FOUR ints against Houston and TWO against Atlanta. The pick six may have been SLIGHTLY tipped…it was NOT deflected..”blameless” totally stared down his target the entire route.
So you’ve actually identified the problem Mike. I want to give “blameless” the benefit of the doubt. I think he will cut his ints in half next year…that’s still 15 too many…leaves him in the top ten. Brees, Stafford, Keenum, Wilson had 1/3 of that with 5 each.
I think in order to cut down on those ints “blameless” will have to stop with the “wing and a prayer” throws which will cut down on his yardage.
If we re-sign our defense I think “blameless” can cobble together ten wins and we reach the playoffs…maybe even 11 or 12 wins.
Then the playoffs…one and done? Will Good “blameless” or bad “blameless” show up? Yeah we KNOW what we have. Does anybody here believe that we can go four games in the playoffs without bad “blameless”. A four game win streak against the very best teams in the league?

If the Bucs lose any of their defensive front 7 because they need the cap space or cash to sign Winston, it would be absolutely ludicrous.
Keep your defense in tact and find a cheaper QB that doesn’t turn the ball over and cost your team games.
Winston alone, buy himself, costs the Bucs 3-5 games a year. Can’t win like that.

Start by dealing with Shaq and work your way down, all the way through the list, until you finally get to Jameis.
At that point there should be $1.52 left in the bank. If Jameis doesn’t want that let him walk. There is no reason to support a QB that gave away six games last season.
A franchise QB should be able to put the team on his shoulders and carry them to wins. Jameis can’t do that. Even when the rest of the team has come together, like the last two games, Jameis can find a way to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.
RoJo got better because Cappa got better and opened holes for him. A run blocking RT can help make more consistent holes and then running lanes
I am intrigued by thoughts of Adrian Killins in a Bucs uniform. He could be even better than Kamara and they could get him in the fourth or fifth round.

I can honestly say without doubt that if the Buccaneers can win a super bowl with Brad Johnson they definitely don’t need interception Winston. We are a play off ready team but we just don’t have the offensive power. If you keep this kid he has to be 1 million times more focused on his craft. I cant watch another season disappointed

You know I’d know it was foe me. 🤗 Did you’ll see the Pewter Report article the other day Trevor wrote breaking down the 30 interceptions. He separated them in two categories Qb fault or not. I think it ended up 10 were on Jameis, 20 weren’t. Even if you don’t agree on every assessment it is worth a look.
I thought there Jameis Poll was interesting too. I always thought most of the Jameis haters hung out in JBF land and it proved out. Last I checked the poll it had 1/3 or 33% of the people wanted to move on. 45 wanted him tagged, the rest wanted long term or transition tagged.

Actually it sounds like Chicago might be very interested in Jameis from several reports that I’ve found. Trubisky is in his 4th year & doesn’t appear to be their answer at QB. Bears have an excellent defense (#4 last year), but their offense ranked #29, putting up only 280 points despite having some pretty decent players (like Montgomery & Cohen as RBs and Robinson & Miller as WRs). Their problem will be that Trubisky is making a little over $9 mil this year (same dead Cap) so fitting him AND Winston in there could be tight.
If you put the transition tag on Jameis ($23 mil) some team like Chicago could very likely go higher. Same for the franchise tag ($27 mil) UNLESS the Bucs use the non-exclusive franchise tag (which would get us two 1st Round picks in return IF someone else outbid us for his services). Not sure any team would go that high for Jameis (more than $27 mil PLUS two 1st Rnd picks?). If Bucs use that tag on him, chances are we’ll own him for 2020, then go through this ridiculous process all over again NEXT YEAR. I think this is what Webster might term a ‘conundrum’.

A lot of fans say Bridgewater won’t get out of New Orleans but there is a problem the Saints have about 20 unrestricted free agents and 12 mil in cap space do the math Teddy not going to settle for 4 mil again.

I’m wondering where exactly Jameis is going to get his leaked desire for $30M fully guaranteed. The CHI talk is silly given they have no cap space. IND certainly has the cap but would they really take a $12M cap hit to walk away from Brissette (3,000 yds, 18 TDs, 6 Ints) to pay Jameis $30M? Strangely, one good spot for him could be Chargers (if Brady not interested) but they would have to go from Rivers (4,600, 23, 20) to a younger version of the same problem… hmm.
Tag Shaq to be sure its not a one year wonder, bring back Suh and JPP for short deals, lock up Godwin and let JW test the waters… no transition tag, just see what happens. His team will want as much immediate money as possible but this is just not the best year for him to ring the cash register… his best chance at a SB run is right here with these All Pro receivers and a surging, young D… and he may be better served with a shorter deal with Bucs for less than he wants so he can prove all these Jameis fans correct in years 2 & 3 with Bruce before hitting the jackpot here or elsewhere in 2022.

Tye, my credibility me be a bit low given all I’ve written against Jameis, but I visited training camp twice and came away thinking Gabbert was going to end the year as the starter. He was just sharper on the playbook and spot on accurate… several frustrated huddles between Byron and JW while Gabbert was getting smiling “attaboys” from Bruce. However, none of that showed in preseason games but maybe that was injury? And, it flies in the face of Bruce saying he wanted JW not lookIng over his shoulder. Who knows.. maybe Gabbert is 2020’s Tannehill. Doubtful, but maybe. Either way, we need to swap Griffin for somebody else as Bruce clearly has no faith in him.

The way I understood the Pewter Report breakdown is as follows :He gave Jameis full credit , half credit or no credit for all for all his interceptions. He didn’t ding Jameis if a defender made a great play unless he also did something to make the INT possible. Final Tally was 16.5 point blame for thirty points available.
It is a fair and well reasoned analysis with all 22 video and defensive alignments
described and his reasoning for each one.
He also suggested all the near INT’s by the opposing defense could be analyzed in the same way. That would be interesting because Jameis sometimes gives the defense a better chance on the ball than his teammates.
Its a good read people, I highly recommend it.

I also said that JBF comment board was where the Jameis has to go fans congregate (that means hangout). So logic would tell you that the Jameis poll on this site would be the most negative one. The JBF Jameis poll isn’t a true reflection of the fan base in general.

I would serve this fan base right to go into next year with Blane Gabbert as the starter. They can boast “sure we only won 4 games and Blaine only threw for 2700 yard and 17 TDs. BUT HE ONLY HAD 14 Interceptions.”

They can keep everyone if they just tell Winston goodbye. I’d trade Brate though. If they don’t keep Jameis the possibilities are endless and this team can leap forward in a big step. You can’t continue to ignore the problem here. JPP can return too. Please stop overestimating the importance of Jameis. Roll the dice man, there’s options, many many options, without the turnover King.

High on Ronald Jones? I’m glad that he is no longer a bust, but he isn’t all that great either. We should get at least two new running backs this offseason. Given that our front office is allergic to quality running backs, I doubt it will happen though.

Without FAMOUS there will be no playoffs because you will have no HEART AND SOUL ….you let him walk and you loss the locker room (remember Doug Williams) …focus on FAMOUS because I’m sure FAMOUS is working to cut down those turnovers as I speak, FAMOUS is the QB for this team at this time!!

Dear Bridgwater enthusiast,
He is the backup QB for Drew Brees. Drew Brees is at the end of his career, and Brees is difficult to replace. Bridgwater has proven that he is capable of leading the Saints, a successful team, beyond the Brees era. Give me one good reason why the Saints would be willing to let their future QB go. And if they have that kind of faith in him, why would they let him go to a division rival? On Bridgwaters decision making process.. he is in line to be the next starting QB for the Saints. He has proven his worth and capability as a starter. Why would he consider a start over with a losing team, when he is in line to take over a winning team? Let that sink in while I transition into the next point… $money$. Bridgwater is a backup quarterback who has proven that he is a starting QB. If you think he can be lured away for backup money, you are ignorant. His pricetag would dramatically increase to starting QB $$$. There is zero chance you will get Bridgwater at a bargain price, when he is expected to earn starting pay within the next few years, in an offense he will succeed in. If the bucs want him, they will pay 20mil plus for him… and a multiyear contract… on a gamble. He is not a sure win, just because he was successful in a saints style offense, doesn’t mean he will be successful in TB.

Jameis will suck up 20 mil with the franchise tag. I’m sure we will see a couple others walk as well. Its called..football.

Dump ATM and sign a stop gap QB and draft the next QB. Then figure out how to keep the core players like Shaq, Permian, JPP and Suh. It makes zero sense to franchise Winston 1 year and then turn around and let him walk after next year when he melts down 5 games in. We’ve all seen how this movie ends.
