Joe finds it a bit amusing when folks freak about the potential salary for Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
That just tells Joe people are not paying attention to what quality quarterbacks are paid.
Now Joel Corry of CBS, a former agent himself, decided to look at the best and worst contracts in the NFL this past season (no, haters, Jameis’ contract is not among the worst) and Corry cited NFL sacks leader Shaq Barrett for having a “steal” of a contract from the Bucs.
The Buccaneers got the NFL sack leader for a one-year deal worth $5 million including incentives. In all fairness, nobody could have foreseen Barrett having 19.5 sacks. The 2014 undrafted free agent produced a total of 14 sacks in his previous four seasons with the Broncos. …
Barrett’s bet on himself with a one-year, $4 million deal (worth up to $5 million in incentives) is going to pay big dividends. He earned NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for September with nine sacks in the first four games. The nine quarterback takedowns also tied an NFL record for the most sacks through four games. Although Barrett couldn’t sustain his early season pace, he led the NFL with 19.5 sacks.
The Buccaneers have made it clear that Barrett isn’t going anywhere. Absent a long term deal, Barrett will be given a franchise or transition designation. The 2020 linebacker franchise and transition tags are expected to be approximately $15.975 million and $13.75 million respectively with a salary cap in the $200 million neighborhood. Barrett’s breakout season should put him in position to at least get a long term deal comparable to the five-year, $90 million contract ($18 million per year) with $56 million in guarantees Trey Flowers got from the Lions in free agency last March.
As Joe noted earlier this week when Joe spoke with Shaq’s agent, oily Drew Rosenhaus, at Shrine Bowl practices at the Fruitdome in St. Petersburg, Rosenhaus is smiling wide knowing his client is going to clean up when the free agency dinner bell rings in March.
Joe would be shocked if the Bucs don’t tag Shaq in some way. The smart thing to do is if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht cannot work out a deal for Jameis, then hit Shaq with the franchise tag and transition tag Jameis.

Keeping this defense, especially the front 7 together is much more important than keeping Winston, who will keep putting them in bad situations and costing them games

REAL buc fans dont freak out because Shaq doesn’t cost us games with 30 penalties a year and go ask San Fran what a great pass rush does…..

We are freaking out because we don’t think Jameis is better than other guys in free agency. Teddy Bridgewater at any price is better. Andy Dalton at his price is better (with our weapons he will be produce at a high floor even if the ceiling is lower, and we will afford to keep our guys). Jameis is just not worth more than $25m/year, and he’s only worth that if he cuts his TOs in half. We can pay him the $30m he wants when he actually starts balling, and not being there 25th most efficient QB by DVOA (YES it matters).

I was going to say how amusing it is that Joe thinks the pay for quality quarterbacks has something to do with Jameis’ potential salary… but I checked myself. Personal growth is so important for this Winter of Jameis soap opera/horror show we’re all attempting to live through. 🙂

We know what quality QB’s are paid, but we don’t have one so
why should we even consider paying top dollar ?.
Again, the four top distance QB’s in the NFL did not make the
playoffs, turning the ball over giving field position and keeping
your D on the field is disaster, BA knows this and why he
focused on priority keeping the front 7 together and called
some of JW play “terrible”, now he will let JW walk because
there is a plethera of options this year re QB.
Footnote – JW isn’t going to win a SB anywhere so we are not
better with the devil we know !.

The non-exclusive tag designation means Winston may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet, the Bucs have the right to match the offer. If they choose not to match, they would receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

less than 30 million = win / two 1st round draft picks = win.
With possession of 3 first round picks we can move to number 1 and take Burrows

We need to tag Jameis but also draft a QB with one of our top 2 picks. The QB class is too deep for us not to roll the dice on someone.
I also think we should at least entertain the idea of trading Evans or Godwin for draft picks. I don’t love the idea of getting rid of either but we have two all pro talents and it would allow us to be a more complete team in other areas.

The key IMO is figuring out Shaq’s value ‘in this defense’. Todd Bowles’ defense optimizes his skillset in a way that only a handful of other defenses would. I imagine that for someone with Shaq’s talents, this is a fun defense to play in because he gets to ‘do it all’ … run defense, pass defense, pressure the QB, etc. Plus IF the Bucs bring back JPP, Suh & Nassib, Shaq’s got some really good complementary defenders who draw attention & free him up to ‘do his thing’.
Transition tag won’t work for Shaq; some other team will surely offer him more than the $13.75 mil (Spotrac still lists his Market Value at $15.7 mil). Besides that, it’s insulting because it says ‘We want you back but not at full price. If we value Shaq in this defense like we say we do, offer him AT LEAST Market Value … $16 mil per year for 4-5 years with at least 2 years guaranteed. He’s worth it ‘in this defense’.

Joe, teams that overpay mediocre talent suffer for it. Look at the Rams. They’re tied to Goff and Gurley, and couldn’t retain their guard who promptly went to Tennessee. The Rams window closed.
The problem with paying Jameis is that we’re tied at the hip to him, and for what? He’s lost too many games for this team. Not to mention, we can’t trust him to take an Uber drive.
Either he gives the team a bargain or he goes.

I don’t understand what the fascination Joe and some readers have with the tags. These are last-ditch tools that often create a lot of turmoil; they are tools to use when you can’t work out a deal. The Bucs have cap space to keep their defense intact and still pay $25-32M for one year for a QB if they want, AND draft a QB in 1st or second round. This article just gives me the impression the goofy Joe thinks we have to pay Winston something he’s already not worth so we mess it up and do it again next year. NOT smart….and NOT going to happen.

Jameis plays NFL the same way I play Madden. He knows where he’s going to throw it before he even sees the defense and doesn’t change his mind. Works great on easy mode. But like him, I suck ass any more difficult mode

A team cannot tag two players in the same offseason. Even if one is a franchise tag and the other is a transition tag.

Keep Shaq. If we lose JPP that would be the real problem. Shaq was amazing but JPP enabled him to get those last 8-9 sacks in the season. If we lose JPP Tampa should try to go for Arik Armstesd or Espenesa from Iowa. We need to keep at least 3 pieces from last year to have similar success. If JPP signs somewhere else that will be the biggest loss in FA we have seen in years. Keep the front seven in tact.

Transition tag jameis and then go pay TB12. If your going to throw away $30m might as well get your bang for your buck and get Brady. I can only orgasm at the thought of how he would shred defenses with our WRs and TEs in Arians’ scheme.

Actually that sentence tells we readers that it us JOE who is not paying attention to what his readers post. There are absurd hyperbolic statements coming from BOTH sides of the argument but they are in a small minority…one “blameless” supporter suggested a long term 200 million deal in advance of the new CBA. I do not accuse the vast majority of “Blameless” supporters of taking that position. Most “blameless” supporters are very well informed about stats including salaries as are the “blameless” bashers and those like me who simply question the wisdom and VALUE,
The vast majority of those of us who either question or simply believe we need to move on, are well aware of the $$$ going to QB’s. The OPERATIVE word in your sentence is QUALITY!!! “blameless” supporters are angry with us for questioning “blameless” quality not what his “potential” value would be IF he had the quality of play to earn it.

I’m not sure however it would be enough to land Burrows. Remember he is a hometown kid for Cincinnati growing up and playing high school ball just a couple hours away to the East.
Joe Burrow is the best college QB I’ve seen in quite awhile..perhaps Luck with better running skills. Like Luck..Burrows is a class act. You’ve seen his interviews and his Heisman speech which went viral netted close to a half million for the food pantry. Because Joe Burrow has a freakng heart and isn’t totally wrapped up in his own ego..hungry kids will eat in Athens Ohio
To be honest like you I’d love to have Burrow but I just can’t imagine the Bengals accepting ANY offer from us that would even be worth if for us.
Much was made of “blameless” draft due to his local connection as a NOLE.
But that connection also brought the baggage and pretty much assured us that the Gator nation would be looking for the first excuse to dump him.
Burrow is TRULY a local hero…not a kid charged with rape…and not a guy who played for an in state school where there are serious rivalry and division.
Not to challenge your post Sorrow…I agree..just pointing out as someone who grew up within walking distance of Riverfront stadium and has a family of cousins who still are rabid Bengal fans…just don’t see them letting Burrow go for ANY price that would make sense for us.

They ask questions like “Is [Your side] always right and [The other side] always wrong?” Then you get two options: Yes or no. Well of course I think my side is mostly right but “always” is a big umbrella so I vote no. But many many people vote yes. Not a lot of room for nuance
