Devin White “Is Good For Us”

Many players known for leadership have found their way to One Buc Palace over the years.
Joe remembers how former rock star Bucs general manager Mark Dominik was really into drafting college team captains, and Greg Schiano was all about landing the mythical “Buccaneer Man.”
Jason Licht has adopted elements of those approaches, too.
But frankly, the Bucs incessant losing has gotten Joe very down on all the talk of leaders.
America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was supposed to be the guy, the great leader of men, and he’s not. Yes, Jameis has leadership qualities, but overall he gets the same lousy leadership grade Gerald McCoy deserved.
But what about the new lead dog on defense, savior linebacker Devin White?
Bucs players appear to appreciate his leadership and presence, so maybe he will become the transformative force in that area.
Level-headed, hard-working Chris Godwin is impressed, so he told the official Buccaneers website.
“He’s kind of like giddy,” Godwin said of White. “I’m just like walking around. I’m chilling. And like every time I see Devin, ‘Hey C.G., we got practice today, bro.’
I’m like, ‘Yeah, I know, Devin.’ He’s like, ‘I’m trying to be real like you.’
“Having a young guy like that who’s so passionate about being great, I think it’s going to be really good for us moving forward.”
Joe is not the jaded old goat many believe Joe is.
Joe is still capable of being hopeful. And again, maybe White can be that guy capable of imposing a winning will in a locker room and having a zero-tolerance policy for nonsense.
For those who think Jason Pierre-Paul is that guy, keep in mind how Brent Grimes was not held accountable in 2018 and was allowed to drag the defense down.

I don’t think you can put Grimes actions on JPP. The coaching staff allowed it. So how is a player going to enforce something the coaching staff allowed. I think this regime is different. (Cutting Hargraves) The coaching staff sets the tone. The players enforce it. I think you will see that from JPP and Devin this year. Grab a vet safety that can actually cover to enforce that backend and I think you are looking at a top 10 defense.

Player discipline among themselves can only go so far. JPP cannot be expected to take all the insolent babies over his knee and spank them. Some of this responsibility falls on the coaching staff. Hargreaves was cut, his problem could not be fixed with player leadership. Leadership works best on young players trying to find their way in the league not older and overpaid vets that don’t care and are only collecting paychecks.

He has that love for the game. Imagine how drafted rookies are going to feel when he walks up to them all excited for practice lol. A good attitude and good work ethic can inspire people around you.

There are two types of leaders.. one that “enables” others by always being positive towards others and those that get in people’s faces that “demand” a certain type of performance. There are too many of the former and not enough of the latter in the Bucs locker room.

Love what appears to be a culture change towards guys who take responsibility for their own efforts & results, it matters to them if they let a teammate down & regardless of the score you Always get every ounce of effort they have….
Let’s hope we keep the group together & add a couple more FA on D that fit this exact mold… JPP will have all these cats FIRED UP with his RELENTLESS effort & never say die attitude…. Go Bucs!!

My brother-in-law is a D1 basketball coach. He regularly challenges his players to ask themselves this question: “Are you going to show up ‘activated’ or will we have to ‘activate’ you? The question refers to practices.
“We” sometimes refers to the coaching staff, but more often than not, it refers to the real leaders on team, those who walk the walk. Sometimes they’re seniors, but more often, they’re not. A rookie, just like a freshman, can lead a team to greatness with a confident, unforgiving, and always “activated” attitude.
