So how much of an overhaul will the Bucs have this offseason to their roster? One NFL writer for the four-letter believes, aside from maybe quarterback, very little.
Jeremy Fowler of BSPN surveyed the NFL landscape looking at each team and Fowler believes the Bucs are just about set to build a playoff team, with perhaps the exception of quarterback.

Big-ticket free agent: Jameis Winston
Low-key important free agent: Ndamukong SuhPriorities this offseason: The Bucs have the best free-agent class seven wins can buy in Winston, Jason Pierre-Paul, Ndamukong Suh and Shaq Barrett. Tampa Bay has smartly maintained one of the league’s youngest rosters while carving out healthy cap space, but keeping that defensive front seven together is prudent business. Since teams are allowed to double up with the use of franchise and transition tags in 2020 via the CBA transition, maybe use them on Winston and Barrett, while going all-in on a run for the playoffs next season. But don’t give Winston long-term money; you’d be competing against yourselves in that particular market.
Fowler is forgetting one key to the free agent puzzle, and that would be Breshad Perriman. They way he played since Thanksgiving, the guy made himself some coin and Joe has a hunch the guy is going to get plucked by someone like Green Bay or San Francisco or Kansas City.
As far as Suh goes, well, he’s a mercenary alright. He will likely go to whoever cuts him a check. And yeah, he just turned 33.
Suh’s decline in sacks wasn’t because he’s gone downhill that badly. He wasn’t asked to sack the quarterback. What he was asked to do was eat up blocks, clog up the middle and allow the Bucs linebackers to hunt. And that they did.
The critical signing will be JPP (8.5 sacks in 10 games). We all saw what he did for Shaq Barrett. That’s coming off a fractured neck, not working out in the offseason as a result, and not being in football shape until around Thanksgiving.
Give JPP a full year after a full offseason of conditioning along with Shaq and watch the hell out!
As for a position the Bucs need to address this offseason? Think we can all agree that’s running back.

Sign the defensive players back. Draft Oline, RB, Dline. Get a safety in free agency. Adrian Phillips from the chargers comes to mind. A vet to help the secondary. I hate Harris went back to Bama. We need a back that can finish off runs. That Atlanta game the RB’s could only run between the 20’s While important we need RB’s that will wear the other defense down.
Tag JW, but its going to cost about 40 mil if he ends up being a 35 TD, 15 INT, 5200 yds and playoffs QB. If we sign him at 32 mil for 3 years it may look like a bargain when its all said and done. It’ll still be tradeable when other QB’s are asking for 40 a year next off-season.

You know B.A. is not here for the next 10 years, so I am all for keeping JPP, Shaq, and the front 7 in tact and moving other players as needed, including #3.

If Bucs go QB(early) then expect a two to three year minimum rebuild.
The Bucs would also be prudent to let the older veterans go since they would be going full scale rebuild.
I do not think its likely the Bucs have a different QB next year. The Bucs will most likely try to resign their free agents and go OT, RB or DL early and draft a developmental QB in rounds 3-5.

Perriman made a great final run, that’s a fact……But the first 10 games was a nightmare, remember? Everyone was lightening a candle for an exchange for 5 pick before the trade line.
Doesn’t make any sense to pay big money for a third receiver, let someone else pay for that, when we have so many FA that should be resigned……
I strongly disagree Suh is a low key, I think is a pretty high one…..he should be a high priority alongside Barrett and JPP…..Let Perriman go if he asks for 1 receivers money……He is way below Evans and Godwin

MadMax – Becton wont last until the 2nd round. Picking Love that early is a major reach. Zack Moss I like. I dont think we need to waste any more draft picks in the secondary. We need a proven vet to lead the secondary. We also need to draft Suh’s replacement.
Becton or Wirfs, JK Dobbins, Leki Fotu, Is Ideal. Love has the measurable but I cant see picking a player that needs a lot of work, coming out of a G5 school at number 14.

You just cant draft a player at 14 to sit especially if you didnt make the playoffs. Rounds 1 and 2 for sure you want starters. If you can get starters in rounds 1-3 then you’ve done your job.

Don’t fix what aint broken, Jason .If JPP can avoid injuries he could have the longevity of Julius . By the way serious injuries to JPP just make him more determined to play at the same or better level when he rturns.
Suh always seem to be around the ball , even if if he has to go through multiple blockers. TD’s trump sacks any day and Suh collected 2 this year. Four fumbles recovered and 7 TFL and 14 QB hits.
Last but not least , there’s Shaq , whose game is similar to JPP in that he plays both the run and pass well.
IMO, these are three of most deserving players to get multiple get multiple
years on their contracts.
Oops, almost forgot the stellar effort Godwin put in this year. And Perriman did his best work late in the season.

I think you let Perriman go….he was productive for a very brief period and it wasn’t Shaq Barrett productive, it was just really good for Perriman. IF….he was a solid #3 AND handled returns on special teams, then maybe he’s worth the extra cash but right now, his role is 2-4 targets per week unless Evans and/or Godwin go down.
Perriman was productive….for Perriman’s standards. He wasn’t Shaq Barrett productive and likely never will be posting elite numbers. He’s a solid #2 for someone….just not us.

We are actually in very good shape…..much better than last year……we have Cappa & Rojo developing along with a very young, very promising secondary……the key is signing our top players……and that includes a new contract for Godwin.
Not sure we have enough for Suh & Perriman…..may have to make a choice….
We could draft replacements for both of them….Perriman would be easier……we need a RT, RB & some depth on the lines.
I continue to hold out hope for Justin Evans…..and perhaps D’Cota Dixon filling out the safety roll…..but, if not that can be addressed.

How did re-structuring JPP’s contract work out for you Mr Litch. Transitional tag for Winston. Not worried about BP the passing game will go thru Evans and Godwin. Scotty will improve next year. The drop off what be that drastic but the pay will be huge.

If you have the best defense and best running game you are not throwing the ball 40+ times therefore less risk of TOs regardless of who’s fault. It really is simple yet still somehow some people still can’t understand.
In addition just for the record Jordan Love looks like complete trash. I wouldn’t touch him with a 1,000 foot pole.

No way they let JW test the market. If he test the market he is as good as gone. He wont come back to let Tampa match. He’s going to test the market and sign. Why would he comeback to a team that says go gauge your market and comeback and give us a change to match. It aint happening.

Fowler makes a good point that the “Bucs are just about set to build a playoff team, with perhaps the exception of quarterback”. Our defense was performing like a Top-15 (maybe even Top-10) defense in the 2nd half of the season. IF it’s re-assembled & improved slightly, we SHOULD be a Top-10 defense this year. Special Teams is adequate, and I think Matt Gay will be a lot better in his 2nd year.
The ‘issue’ is our offense. Production was there (458 points is excellent) BUT the 41 turnovers were totally unacceptable (game killers). I keep wondering if it’s worth $27-$35 mil in 2020 to ‘gamble’ that Jameis will rein in his turnovers, yet STILL produce in the same range of points. Spending THAT MUCH on him means that we’ll have to cut corners someplace else (cutting Perriman, Brate, NOT extending Godwin, etc). Some really hard choices ahead.
With $210 mil total salary Cap to play with, I’d personally ‘allocate’ $90mil to the defense, $105 mil to the offense, $5 mil to S/Ts (to include a return man like Logan), then keep $10 mil in ‘reserve’ (injuries, take advantage of ‘good deals’, etc). At those numbers, we SHOULD be able to bring back our defense FAs (and even upgrade a couple of spots via the draft). SHOULD also be enough for the offense, BUT it’d require EITHER getting rid of Perriman AND Brate, OR going with a less expensive QB (in the $15 mil range). Sad fact is that you really ‘can’t have it all’.

Yes the Ravens and Titans game was the perfect game, from my perspective, to prove my point. The team that had to throw the ball a ton turned the ball over, the one that was able to run the ball did not, it’s as simple as that. That is exactly what I have been saying over and over and over again. You people compare Jameis’s TO numbers with other QBs yet he is asked to do WAYYYY more than most other QBs. Jackson didn’t turn the ball over all year but when forced to pass non stop, which we choose to do, he had 3 TOs. Wow shocker who would have thunk it? The defense knew what was coming and was able to drop into zones, get off the ball quicky to pass rush and jump routes. These are things Jameis has been dealing with for his whole career then people wonder why his TOs are higher than most. Well duh!!!!

the ravens got the the playoffs with the best record because they played great defense, ran the ball and their QB only tossed 6picks…..
they lost(mostly) because of 3 TOs…..same reason why we lost many games this year…..TOs….

Turnover margin is second to pints in terms of determining the outcome of the game. After that, field position. Turnovers lead to points and a loss of field position.
The 2019 season’s biggest mistake: turnovers. Nothing stunk more than turnovers.

First it was ‘Weapons for Winston’ which cost us a TON.
Then it was ‘Strong OLine for Jameis’ (hey, passing deep takes very good pass protection) and THAT cost us a TON last year & will this year.
Then it was ‘Strong Defense for Jameis’ (hey, someone’s gotta clean up the messes) and THAT will cost us a TON this year.
Now it’s ‘Strong Running Game for Winston’ (because heaven forbid if he passes too much, he’ll turn the ball over a LOT more) and THAT improved running game will cost us even more (in terms of draft picks for OLine & RB PLUS money).
So you want to pay a QB MUCH MORE MONEY this year BUT … you want him to do a LOT less. Got it. Makes perfect sense … to Jameis & his agent. For the Bucs? Not so much.

It’s a gamble to be sure.
What I will say is this, when Jameis threw the ball 35 or less times, our winning percentage doubled. Now, taken in a vacuum that doesn’t mean a lot, especially considering our W/L record.
The gamble becomes about how much did Jameis put us in position to throw 35+ by turning the ball over. There’s no easy explanation.
Here’s what I believe: I believe that we CAN win with Jameis as our QB with a good run-game and a good defense.
Jameis is not going to change. He WILL turn the ball over. As a TEAM, can/should the Bucs be able to overcome it?
The priority should be to get those defensive players signed, NOW!

The reason JW needs a great team around him is because for years all the teams in the NFC south have been great teams. This was the first down year and the fact we had a wonky schedule we couldnt really capitalize off of it. Remember all three starting QB’s have been the super bowl in our division because they have good QB’s and good teams. No other Division in the NFL has more than two starting QBs that have been to the Superbowl.
The NFC west may hold that title hear soon and guess who we were matched up with this year. Next year if Tampa cant make it then you may look at blowing it up. But I think it lays out well that BA should get the most out of this team.
We do however need to improve on special teams. Kickers need to be better and we need a dynamic return man. If we can find a WR late in the draft that is a legit kick returner then we may be cooking. Thats why I like Urban Meyer as a coach he puts a lot of effort to ensure his special teams group is top notch. To some coaches its an after thought but they literally win or lose just as many games as the offense or defense.

Perriman barely earned what he got paid. He played poorly most of the year, and then had 2-3 decent games. He made $4 million! Offer him the same deal…maybe slightly more like $5 million. Let him walk if that is not good enough.

I dont think I could have said this for the last 15 years but I think we have the best D line in the NFL and please Jason and BA lets keep it together as you said you wanted to. Bringing in Shaq was a brilliant move but swapping Suh for McCoy was almost as brilliant. I tore my bicep recently and you just dont regain strength that you had and we all know McCoy was terrible in run stuffing teams used to gash us for big yardage all up the middle. Now we have turned around what was the worst defense in the NFL and have a young promising secondary to boot. I am actually excited about this year the only question I have is Is Jameis our guy and if he is get him some coaching so he wont try to be superman every play we might stand a chance.

or pick 6 early in the game ,and the 40 or more passes are required to attempt a comeback. LImit TO’s and You can get a better handle on pass attempts per game. Simple as that!

Counting the Bucs, there are four teams that really need a QB in the draft. There are 24 QBs in the draft. There is also only one Delpit in the draft. Grab him and define the defense.
Take an RB in the second round, a QB in the third, then take O-line.
That strategy only works if they pay the D-line to retain them for next season. There is no reason, other than money, for the D-line to change. That includes Nassib.

In case you didn’t know guys when you can’t run the ball (24th in the league) you can’t stop people (30th in pass defense) you have to score to win games. How exactly do you purpose we score points to win games since we can’t run the ball? I know you guys think throwing the ball is the same as running it, at least 813 does, but a lot more things can go wrong if you throw it a ton vs running it a ton.

Arians now knows he can’t win with Winston, Licht will want to keep Winston at all cost to save face, and the Glazers know that shrinking fan base and empty stadium is costing them a lot of money.

It’s funny to me because many of y’all said this time last year how Jason Licht had us in CAP hell. Yet now here we are and we need a whole bunch of money……oh and look we have all that we need. Not to mention we had a bunch of players we could of cut last year had we wanted to free up more space. They decided to build with what they have & now here we sit. We need to sign players and most of them are already Bucs.

Hey everyone a bucs fan from Greece here. I watched the Bucs first time close in London this year. Not comment a lot is only my 2nd time but i do read the articles and all of your comments and just wanted to say a couple of things.
I swear reading all the comments about #3, the TO and who is to blame is like watching an argument about who came first the chicken or the egg. In my opinion you cant just look at some stats that are convinient for your argument but you must look the whole picture.
You cant win consistently with so many turnovers it is a fact. Depending the bounces of the ball in some games you will have a 9-7 season a 5-11 season or a 7-9 season but you will not be a contender. Winston turns the ball over many times it is a fact. Some of them are not on him but that happens to other QBs too. QBs take the more glory, the more money so they should take most of the blame too. I just have not seen something in 5 years that makes me think the INTs will be reduced to an acceptable level.
About the stats, some will say 30 INTs other will say 5.000 yards and 33 TDs but again you must look at them all together. In my opinion the stat that matters the most is TDs/INTs ratio. If it is 1/1 you will not win many games, you must have at least 2/1.
And the final thing i want to say. My brother is a Seahawks fan and i watch all their games like i watch all of Bucs game. Bottom line guys, no matter what happens for 58 minutes you have one final possession on offense. When Wilson has the ball i am confident that 8 out of 10 times the Seahawks will win the game and they do. When we have the ball and one last drive with Winston i have no confidence and i know is 50/50 chance and that is the truth.
Sorry for the long post, if the Bucs will keep Winston i will support the team, i am a Bucs fan not a Winston fan or hater. I am a Bucs fan. Go Bucs and greetings to all from Greece.

Why is it that Ryan Fitzpatrick can play Philadelphia and New Orleans with no defense and running game and win in 2018.? Because he played almost error free football. He just went and played. Its a fools errand to be worrying about whether
you have a good defense or running game. You have to go out and play your game and put the other stuff out of your mind. No excuses,just play your game
and do your job. Yes the defense and running game could have better,so too could have Jameis beenl bettter.

OT and RB should hopefully be our highest priorities in the draft, BUT(!) if we draft a LT in round 1, is he going to play RT(!) his first year or two?
Our current LT says he cannot play RT at all.
And our current RT needs to be replaced.
We could very well find the Bucs in a position where, then, they have to replace both(!) OTs.
Is pick 14 too high for an actual RT?
I didn’t like how much Marpet got moved around, and I hope that’s not what is going to keep happening.

I shall certainly agree with you that the more you throw the greater chance for ints. Or as Woody Hayes used to say when you throw the ball 3 things can happen and two are bad.
I’ll also concede that BA likes a wide open offense.
Looking at 2018 and prior years the horrid defense was a sieve forcing JW to overcompensate.
But this year WHY did he throw it 40 times. BA a little…JW mostly at fault.
How many games did he start with a pick six…or an int setting up a score.
When you fall behind you have to chuck it a lot. As our Greek friend suggested which came first the chicken or the egg.
JW’s classic game…his last UF contest…4 ints seemingly gave the Gators the game but Mr Excitement came back and tossed 4 TD’s. That can be exciting for a game here or there but in the long run it just seems an absurd style of play and in year FIVE he’s worse than ever at this. Horrid starts which then give him the opportunity to be a hero and save our bacon from the fire HE CREATED!
I’ll concede he may be great next year NDOG if you can concede that you at MINIMUM understand why the fan base is split 50-50 and as a poster accurately said…if JW played for USC or LSU…he would have been gone already.

Have to see who the Bucs re-sign and get in FA before making draft decisions, but here’s some things to consider.
1. Bucs probably won’t re-sign all of its front 7 on defense. Therefore, we need to draft someone in rd 1 based on the position we fall short in. My guess is DT because we don’t pay Suh. DT only has Brown and Kinlaw as rd 1 worthy. This is a deep DE draft with lots of options.
2. Need a RT and RB. It’s doubtful Barber will be re-signed. RB is a deep position in the draft, so RT in the 2nd and RB in the 3rd. I like Harris from Alabama and the big guy from Memphis as Taylor from Wisconsin will most likely be off the board. Better option is to trade OJ for a 2nd and 4th. Then you get both RT and RB in the 2nd. Use the 4th rd pick from the trade to pick a blocking TE to replace OJ.
3. You will probably have to replace Perriman as the #3 receiver. Scottie Miller looks to be the heir appearant speedster. This is a very deep draft for WR. You can get a very good receiver in rd 4. My choice is Claypool from Notre Dame – big, strong, able to go deep, good hands and plays special teams great on K/P coverage. He has experience against major college teams and could fill in for Evans or Godwin if injured again.
4. We need depth on both lines. BPA in 5th and 6th rounds.

Welcome to the party my friend. Personally I’m in the middle on Jameis. He has done things no other Bucs QB has ever done, both good and bad. The argument really comes down to this: What other QB would give us better results overall as a team in the W/L category? The debate concerning Jameis is turning into a broken record on both sides. At the end of the day I myself have been and always will be a Bucs fan. Just ready for the team to decide so we can focus on the many other steps we need to take to be great again.

I DO NOT agree that Rb is the most important position of need.So quit trying to put words in my mouth. And I do believe as a lot of fans do that OT/OL is the most important position of need. Here you go again letting your alligator mouth overload your tadpole ass.

The Titans win with an accurate deep passing QB, a great blocking OL, a bruising big RB to wear down the opponent’s defense, and a decent defense. That should be our focus for building our team. Jameis has been developed by BA as an accurate deep throwing QB with good production inside the red zone. Keep our current defense in tact, draft a bruising large RB, grab a LT who can both pass block and run block well. Cappa is an OT who can take over RT and can both pass block and run block. Make D. Smith play RT. He can be a road grading blocker from that position and nobody will be able to overrun him to pressure Jameis. Use Rojo as a change of pace RB. Trade O.J. and use the pick you get to get a good blocking TE. With a running game Jameis will pass much less with a lot fewer turnovers and we will be playoff team next year as tops in our division!
