“Grimy” Godwin

January 12th, 2020

Bucco Bruce Arians gave one hell of a sales pitch.

It feels like a lifetime ago, but when Arians arrived and made it clear he envisioned receiver Chris Godwin as an every down slot receiver, Godwin was not doing jumping jacks with excitement.

Perhaps it was because Godwin saw himself is a No. 1 receiver, which former coach Dirk Koetter frequently said he was. And besides, what big, strong young receiver who excelled outside in college really dreams of becoming a slot guy?

Regardless, not only did Godwin make the Pro Bowl in the slot for Arians, he’s also revamped his mindset and now sees himself as an enforcer in the trenches.

“I like to see myself as more of like a grimy player. Like I’m [going to] do all the dirty work,” Godwin told The Current on the Bucs’ official website. “I’m going to block linebackers and safeties and sometimes defensive ends. But I’m also a guy that can go in and make contested catches as well.”

Those who watch game film saw Godwin thrive as a willing blocker all over the field. But Joe is impressed how Godwin has embraced his role to the point where he’s calling himself “grimy.” That’s not a common receiver adjective.

Man, Joe wishes medical science could find a way to implant Godwin’s fierceness in O.J. Howard.

Joe would love to see Arians and general manager Jason Licht extend Godwin’s contract now, much like Licht did for Lavonte David after his third NFL season. You can either pay more for Godwin later, or lock him up now and send a message to the team that Godwin is the kind of guy the organization wants to shower with cash.

Godwin is balls dude. Pay him.

  2. Clean House Says:

Not thrilled about this, regardless of production-
Guy can get hurt- he’s a WR
Any way what do I know I’m not a coach
Just my initial gut feeling reading this- asking for trouble, and we know how quick promising careers can take an injury return. Hire someone else to be a bulldozer

  3. Clean House Says:

    Turn

  4. BigHog Says:

    G.G. > Grimy Godwin ….tough player!!

  5. HurricaneBuc93 Says:

Or like they did with Mike Evan’s as well. With these 2 monster WR’s locked down for the next 5 years we can win with any QB that can reduce there turnovers to 15, Bottom Line!!

  6. Bob in Valrico Says:

Love to see this happen. I would think it might require losing one of Jameis favite targets and other wheeling and dealing.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We may have to give up on Perriman to pay Godwin more…..I hope not….perhaps Jameis could accept $6 million less to chip in…..make it public he’s doing a “team-friendly” deal……raise his popularity.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Bob .. I’d love to see that happen also, but I’ll predict here & now that the Bucs won’t be able to find a way to extend Chris Godwin this year, no matter how badly they want to. Too many mouths to feed. Matter of fact, unless the Bucs settle for a rookie QB, I seriously doubt we’d be able to keep ME13 & Godwin NEXT year.

Bucs are already paying Mike Evans $18.3 mil this year, and he’s not going anyplace. I would expect that it’ll take someplace around that amount to keep Godwin. Add in (potentially at least) paying Jameis $27 mil and you just hit $64 mil … for just 3 players. Minnesota took that approach this year (their Top-3 … Cousins, Hunter, Rhodes … came in at $56 mil) but it still didn’t work.

  9. dmatt Says:

Godwin is a cloned Terrell Owens in his prime without the drama n prima-donna personality. Many folks may not agree with me but IMO, he’s better than Mike Evans. He’s not as fragile, doesn’t push off, n gains critical yards after first, second n sometimes third point of contact. He has the total package. He plays beast mode n is a game changer. Godwin will take his game to another level in 2020. Speaking of OJ Howard, he’s too passive n lackadaisical, a big DUD.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Lol

You are witnessing in front of your eyes

A coach and coaching staff destroying a player

Put Godwin outside away from the linebackers

Godwin is not stocky nor thick

Godwin bodytype is no fitzgerald, anquan Bolden nor Hump

His body cant handle 16 games inside”

    Kobe Faker

“Joe wishes medical science could find a way to implant Godwin’s fierceness in O.J. Howard.”

Great line, exactly what I was thinking.

Pay CG the same money that Hump got at Tenn.

  12. Blame Jameis Says:

I just ordered a double cheeseburger and they gave me a McDouble, it must be Jameis’ fault.

  13. SmittyToiletBowles Says:

Bad choice of restaurants blame. We blame you. Godwin will be paid here. My guess is they already tried a few too low numbers. And for those saying his body type isnt good for inside just watch the tape. Body types dont win fights. He brings the fight. Gota love him.

  14. Go Bucs 72 Says:

    Pay the man.

  15. JGhoti86 Says:

Can’t say I disagree one bit. Sign the guy now. Save a little $ in the long run and send a message to the team.

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

    Top 5 wideout
    Maybe as good as ME?

  17. bucnole Says:

Need to make sure Godwin rooms with OJ in camp this year. May he can light a fire under his underperforming butt.

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Dmatt

I do not have any problem believing Godwin is better than ME13. It’s now reached the point where that is a legitimate debate.

IMO it’s too close to call. I’ve seen this once before on the awesome SB Steeler teams. Swann and Stallworth. Swann was clearly different than Stallworth but they were equally as effective.

We must have them BOTH! I love Cam Brate but I get that we can’t keep him.
I’m now a Perriman fan as well but I realize he too is on the cap bubble.

This may be one of the most fun off seasons ever! It’s D.R.’s wet dream!

    @JOE

Do the Bucs have a “guy” designated as the capologist? Somebody who knows EVERY intricacy of the CBA and league rules on the cap? Or does Licht handle that himself?

Whomever does that job this off season will have a MAJOR influence on how good this team can become,

  19. Slugglife Says:

Godwin reminds me of Hines Ward. He doesn’t mind blasting somebody with a vicious block. He’s a team player that does what the team needs him to do. Hard to find receivers who don’t complain if they don’t get the ball.

Sign him immediately and put his face on the stadium where JW used to be.

  20. Slugglife Says:

Yeah, who the hell goes to McDonalds? Pony up some cash and get a real hamburger, you cheap dollar menu eating homer. I suggest five guys.

  21. Hodad Says:

Mike’s in his prime, has a reasonable contract, what would he fetch in a trade? Look at some of the teams, like the Jets, Giants, AZ that have top ten first round picks, and need a receiver bad. Think of the picks we could get for Mike, and use his salary to sign Godwin, and Perriman. Use that extra first round pick on a QB, let JW go, and even have more cap to spend. Let Gabbert start the season, till #1 is ready. Use the cash, and picks to bolster both lines, keeping JPP, Shaq, and Suh.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’ve posted this before but I’m going to do it again so whichever Buc employees who read JBF…and I suspect there’s more than one..JOE can confirm or deny…

But AGAIN…I’m waiting for the Bucs to dump the HIDEOUS, UNLUCKY unis so I can buy a #12. He’s my favorite Buc right now.

I feel certain that I’m not the only one waiting for that change!!! Why buy now anyway knowing that they’re going to have to change these ugly suckers.

Bucs…there is a bump in your merchandising and licensing dollars if you would only do the right thing.

  23. Cometowin2 Says:

It would be great to be able to afford Suh but with a first round stud at DT we can save some money there but trade Evans, a HOF player, is ridiculous. I may of been wrong about Winston and Koetter but not about Evans or Godwin.

I am a bandwagon fan. Jumped aboard after that first win in 1977. Was at the KC game in the driving rainstorm when we clinched the first division title in 1979. I was there when we won our first playoff game in 1979. I live in Albuquerque now and remain a rabid Bucs fan. I even saw games this year live in Atlanta and Phoenix. Win or lose will be a Bucs fan till I hit the exit. I just want to live long enough to see the Super Bowls, Jamies and Koetter will bring to Tampa and Jamies and Mike Evans eventual induction into the HOF. Go Bucs!!!

Chris is definitely a #1 receiver in addition to Evans. No divas either. Great position to be in. Go Bucs!!!

Must find a way to keep the best WR duo and eventual HOF players together!!!

    Said it first!

Been impressed with Chris Godwin from his rookie season. We have 2 #1 receivers. Both Chris and Mike Evans will get their 1000 plus yards. Both can make the HOF with a little luck, long career and a good quarterback. I hope that is Jameis but I’m nervous about giving him all that money unless plays like Thursday pretty much every week. Get him a QB coach that can calm him down. Seems to get nervous or too hyped up. Has a lot of his disastrous games in games that are important to him like nationally televised games, season and home openers.

Also what’s with the squinting? Can he see long distances? May be the reason his accuracy on his long ball is bad. Used to see this all the time in college.

  25. firethecannons Says:

We need to resign Godwin with all the extra coin we will have from not signing Winston–letting him walk. We need Godwin to be there to fight for the crazy balls coming his way from first round late pick in NFL 2020 draft-that would be Jacob Eason. Cannot afford Winston and still resign everyone else on defense. Get strong on O-line too in free agency and draft. Not signing Winston makes everything possible–sad but true.

  26. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

firethecannons: sounds good, but exactly who would you have at QB? BA is NOT turning this team over to a rookie QB, especially not one available at our 1st round pick given this years weak QB class. JW will get the transition tag

  27. WestChap Says:

I’m all-in on Godwin and love Perriman’s closing games but can Joe censor any calls for trading Mike Evans? Jeez, that’s not cool. Next, some idgit is going to try to trade Lavonte. Keep and reward performance… jettison the over talented under performers (you know who you are… out there ballin away for the stat sheet).

  28. unbelievable Says:

Clean House I could not disagree with you more.

This is EXACTLY what you want from your studs.

Can’t play scared or play to not get hurt. That’s not how this game works. If your starting WRs play like that (has everyone forgotten when Evans was manhandling those Bengals DB’s a few years back?) it opens up so many more holes and additional yardage for you running backs.

We need every guy on offense playing with that same mindset- playing through the whistle, not just for the first 2 seconds after the ball is snapped.
