Penalties, pick-sixes and missed field goals. If Joe was to write a history of the 2019 Bucs, a chapter would be centered around those three issues.
With Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, his third-favorite receiver this season wore different color jerseys than the Bucs’ ugly uniforms.
(You think the creamsicles represented losing? Those things with the alarm clock font the Bucs now wear personify losing. At least the Bucs won a playoff game with the creamsicles. The Bucs have no playoff games and one winning season with the current mess they wear.)
Former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi, a coffee fetcher for Bill Walsh, Bill Belicheat and Al Davis, said recently on his podcast “GM Street” that he thought Jameis’ good is so good you just have to live with the picks.
In a recent column on The Athletic, Lombardi seems to hint if the Bucs can find a way to cut out Jameis throwing pick-sixes the team will be fine.
Interceptions are a part of Winston’s game, but Bruce Arians and the Bucs need to keep Winston from beating himself. Tampa is a fun team to watch with the way it throws the ball down the field on offense. They’re never out of any game — unless they let Winston be Winston and get into too much trouble early.
Now Jenna Laine of ESPN did a solid breakdown of when Jameis throws picks. If Laine can figure this out, surely the Bucs have the data as well.
The pick-sixes, those seem to come from short, sideline routes, almost always deep in Bucs’ territory. The solution should be simple: Don’t call for those short, sideline shots, surely not deep in your own real estate.
This isn’t trigonometry.

Jameis HAD to have a hand in the Ravens loss yesterday. There is NO way Lamar Jackson throws any of those pics that helped a QB like Tanehill beat the best team in football.

Add a running attack that opponents can’t stop. Last two weeks, Derrick Henry terrorized two of the top defenses of the season. And they couldn’t stop him. Tannehill only needed to throw for 83 yards for the victory.
Bucs would not beat Bucs with that kind of attack.

It’s not all about blaming Jameis it’s more about is he worth 27 to 30 mil a year? I say spend 50 mil on keeping the defense together and maybe add a piece or two in free agency. Maybe make Jameis any offer not 27-30 mil and see if he is interested or not. If not see you. If your thinking about making a change at quarterback this is the year to do it. Between free agency and the draft there are plenty of candidates available.

It’s finally happening after some of us were telling you all year long. Jameis is being asked to play a different game than almost every other QB in the league. To illustrate this even further just for a moment close your eyes and imagine what the score would have been vs Baltimore if we only dropped back to pass 14 times. Hopefully if you were able to do that you are starting to get it.

I’m thinking the transition tag for Jameis…..it’s a little over $23 million which would give him a raise…..and we still have the right to match a competing offer…..which, I don’t believe we will get.
The non-exclusive franchise tag would get us 2 #1 picks if someone paid more…but it would cost us at least another $4 million.
Using the transition tag for Jameis would give us the option (this year only) to franchise Shaq in case his salary numbers go through the roof.

Picks, turnovers lose games, look no further then the Ravens game. Is the good so good? I thought that’s what all QB’s get paid for, making throws most mortals can’t. So don’t give me you have to take the good with the bad. It’s simple, good QB’s make the great throws, and protect the football. Look at the throws Jackson, Murray, Wilson, Mahomes make without the 30 picks, and 7 pick sixes. So it can be done, why should we have to settle?

If Jameis had played for the U, I guarantee all the FSU homers would want him to be run off, just as the majority of us do. The NFC South is not the ACC.

We have to settle for Jameis because he played for FSU. No QB who played for any other college would be given this much support for throwing 30 picks(should have been 40 or more).

Look at ravens game last night
Even the known suspects commenting“ playoffs turnover machine ”
Lamar jackson had his worst game (by his standards) because he turned the ball over 3 times and they lost he turned the ball over and they lost after his super human MVP season. And they have running game and good defense.
On year , he threw 36 tds and 6 ints. 6 to 1 td ratio. Thats has pretty amazing
Completed 66.7 percent of passes and 113.3 rating and Ran for 1200 yards while throwing for 3,127
Ravens were 7-1 at home and 7-1 away . Almost unstoppable.
But again …last night , he personally turned it over 3 times and they lost. (Even admitting one was receivers fault)

So here is jameis. Again not all his fault but 35 turnovers by himself (30 int and 5 lost fumbles is part of the bucs problem. Turnovers matter. every says one stat doesnt matter. I did disagree. Look at any successful team in todays nfl. Dont turn ball over .
Of the 16 games ,Jameis -he :
Had 5 of the 16 games with 3 or more turnovers (ints) all bu himself. . One game he had 6 (5 int and one lost fumble )
Only 4 of the 16 Games , he had no ints ; however in 2 of those he lost a fumble …
so in only 2 out of 16 games he contributed to 0 personal turnovers.
Also , he only beat 1 team with a winning record (rams)
His rating was 84.3. Think that ranked 16th (and .1 off his career low)
Had second lowest completion percentage of his career at 60.7 percent

No question they have to run the ball better.. bucs are liable in making him throw so much (especially with turnover history ) The good with the bad with throwing so much. Yards at 5,109 but also 30 ints . A good running back can change that quickly.

And Everyone says there is no other qbs out there and none in draft that could win here. look who won last noght. Titans moved on with tannehill After their #2 overall pick could not win enough. Tannehill who was called garbage by same posters here. Is he throwing for 5,100? Nope. Bit look at stats. Game manager and didnt turn the ball over. Now titans will have to pay up which puts them in tough situation cause game managers dont deserve big money but he will get that and titans coukd struggle. And everyone knows titans defense and running game is stout. But is there a game manager out there that won’t lose games With turnovers for reasonable price so bucs can continue with defense and bring back Suh , jpp and most importantly Barrett.
Turnovers do matter….and unfortunately we have seen 5 years of the same thing. Jameis makes amazing plays no question but his poor decision making will stop him from going to that next level

Been catching up on threads here and TBBF has made some excellent points.
The one here and the point he made on another about how Derrick Henry has run roughshod over the competition in these playoffs!!! He has DOMINATED.
When the Titans played us he didn’t even reach 100 yards!!!

If we keep JW and it harms the cap it should ALL be at the expense of the Offense. If that means no Perriman and Brate so be it..and OJ has what a year or two remaining on his rookie deal? He’s next out the door. NO big FA OL…they simply MUST come from the draft to be able to afford them if we’re going to open the vault for JW
This is not an anti-Jameis rant. He can stay if BA thinks he’s the answer. It’s more a response to D.R. I’m slow on the uptake but he’s made me see the light. Balance and pay for production.
If we sign JW we will be paying for production on the offensive side big time.
Time to even it out by taking some resources away from the O and investing them in the D.
Final thought about how the team is constructed. Do we want an exciting team that can win every Sunday or a team that can win in the playoffs and reach the SB. It’s only ONE game, not enough to be a good sample size but Baltimore showed us the former but not the latter.

I will repeat what I have said before ;
To play winning football and make the playoffs in today’s NFL , you have to run the ball, play good defense, and NOT TURN THE BALL OVER. This is something that all of this year’s playoff teams have in common.
Arians’ brand of offense doesn’t win now. It may be entertaining, but it’s not fun to watch your team constantly lose.Because of Arians’ offensive style and Winston’s many continuous turnovers, the Bucs defense lead the league in total defensive snaps on the field. You can’t win that way. Plus the Bucs opponents scored 121 points off of Winston’s turnovers.
As much as I do like Arians. I’m beginning to think he was a bad hire here. He was hired to make a stat, or at least a true franchise QB out of Winston. But that didn’t happen. Oh yes, the impressive yardage totals were nice, but it wasn’t winning football games with all of the turnovers mixed in.
Maybe the Bucs went totally in the wrong direction. That have a QB that is badly mistake and error prone, so they bring in a coach that is going to have him handling and throwing the ball even more, giving him many more chances to make errors and mistakes, which he did, costing his team games. Not only did he commit 35 turnovers but had 11 more passes that should have been interceptions but were dropped by the opponent’s defense.
Maybe Bucs should have went in a different direction and hired a coach that would focus on making the Bucs a heavy running, ball control team that focussed on play action passes. That would have Winston throwing the ball a lot less, making a lot less mistakes and NOT costing his team as many games, and NOT having the defense on the field as much. That’s winning football today.
The 5 QB’s in the league this year that threw for the most yardage DID NOT make the playoffs.

I think the percentage of Bucs fans who think turnovers matter is quite a bit higher than 50%. The % of fans who think turnovers don’t matter have some strange attachment to JW. They wouldn’t want any other QB to throw 3-4 picks a game, but have found a way to set the bar so low, that everybody else just needs to accept it. We just watched arguably the best team in football get run out of the playoffs with 2 picks and a fumble.
But no, turnovers don’t matter, because 5000 yards and 30 TDS.

@TBBF, I think any NFL team would be happy to risk $4M for TWO #1 picks. That would give us 3 #1 picks and the Bucs could move up very high to take a QB, or draft the some awesome D players, a awesome RB and sign a FA QB like, Teddy, Tannehill, or whoever.
Personally, I am one of the crazy’s that thinks JW will get it next year and get the picks down to a 2-1 ratio.

Completely off topic, so please ignore.
My favorite play last night was the jump pass from Henry for a TD.
Many teams have a short yardage RB as a specialist for 4th and inches or goal line work.
If I were the GM of an NFL team, I would hire a 6’10” rebounding power forward who couldn’t make it in the NBA, but could block out and high-point those sort of jump passes, much like the inlet passes to the center in the NBA. How could that sort of pass be stopped at the goal line?
But, I’m clueless, so what do I know.

At least some here are willing to think outside of the box. Sadly during my tenure covering sports, football coaches were the most stodgy boring humans on earth….exhibit A Nick Saban. BA at least has the personality to make him popular…but does he really have an open mind? For me the jury is still out.

Joe, I read a very interesting article while I was back down in Florida last week on business. I think it was in Bleacher Report, but I can’t be totally sure. It was from about 10 years ago, and it was about data they had collected on Turnover Differential in football games. The gist of it was this….if a team has a +1 TODiff, they win 62% of the time. Teams with a +2 TODiff won 76% of the time. A +3 Diff boosted winning to 88%. And a +4 or higher TODiff boosted odds of winning to 96%!
Fast forward to today and I think this info would probably still be pretty accurate. Winston’s propensity for turning the ball over IS the number one reason the Bucs can’t seem to climb out of the cellar and make it back to the playoffs. Look at what happened last night in Baltimore! The Ravens QB threw for a boatload of yds (365 yds), but also committed 2 picks! The Titans meanwhile rode a strong running game, short accurate passes, and a solid defense into a trip to the AFC Championship game! I’m NOT saying the Ravens should get RID OF LAMAR JACKSON! He only threw 6 INts the entire regular season! But it does illustrate the point above that turnovers are huge factors when it come to winning and losing!
That’s why after nearly 70 games and over 100 turnovers, it’s time to move on from Winston and rebuild around a QB who can protect the ball!

here’s the kicker.. YOU HAVE TO RUN THE FOOTBALL, and more importantly, run it when the other team knows a run is coming. yes I’m type yelling that. Third and less than 2 should be a run 80% of the time and a first down 80% of the time its ran. If you have to throw 50 times per game and need 5K yards you will have INTS.. this is the history of the NFL. The Bucs ran better this season when they ran off off the pass. The run game never set up the pass game. This team hasn’t been a good short yardage run team for a long, long time. How nice would it be when it is 3rd and a long 1 and just be able to pencil in a first down.
The Bucs should’ve realised MUCH earlier Jones was a much more dynamic runner and given him the bulk of the carries. This is another one of those things that BA/BL need to explain during their Glazer meeting.
If Winston is retained or not, for the Bucs to win they must
1. Run the Ball more effectively. Be situationally dominant in this. Don’t tell me we couldn’t because Winston turned the ball over…. The Bucs were 14th in attempts. This shows a commitment to run. 24th in yards per game. Not productive enough given the commitment from the team. Watching film, these backs are not zone runners. Either get zone backs are move to another scheme. ROJO is a classic between the tackle, one cut back. He isn’t this speed guy we thought he was. Peyton Barber is a good story, like the guy but he and Dare can’t be on the same team. ROJO needs to be the #3. Kareem Hunt and a proficient RT that doesn’t hold nearly every run outside to the right and this part of the Bucs team transforms. Hunt should be cheap due to his baggage and not beating out Chubb kept his value down.
2. Stop the pass.. I know everyone is googly eyed at our secondary but when SMB is out, or when JPP wasn’t around, the group looks very shaky.. 30th vs the pass. No way to spin this stat vs Winston. If anything this is artificially low because of all of the pick 6’s he threw took possessions away from the other QBs. This secondary WASTED the best front 7 this team has had in 15+ years.
3. Have a more solid kicking game. I think Gay might be the guy. Truly do. He hits the ball cleanly. Most of his misses are just barely outside the posts.. I think he will clean this up but the kicking game needs to win games not lose them.
If this is done, the TO’s will reduce no matter who the QB is. Keep these three things this way they currently are and the Bucs will continue to lose.
ANYONE who doesn’t think the Bucs need to run better, isn’t even having a reasonable discussion.

Only way to change the culture is to remove the main issue, turning the ball over to the opposition. You can have the best defense and running game, but will lose if you turn the ball over consistently. Watching the Ravens game was like many games we’ve all watched in the last five years. Poor coaching decisions, dropped passes, and lots of turnovers.
Jamoist has to go. A fresh start is needed for everyone involved. He’ll never succeed in Tampa, and we’ll never see the playoffs with him as QB1. Let’s bring in a veteran and draft a rookie QB. Then spend big on the defense. I guarantee you will see more filled seats once winning is the goal again in Tampa.

Perhaps you’re just being disingenuous and asking if we can find that word for word quote. But I think you’re asking honestly if ANYONE had made that point.
Jameis JOE here CONSTANTLY mentions posters and critics who are OBSESSING on ONE statistic as if it’s not really that important.
It’s just like NOBODY has claimed 5,000 yards and boatloads of TD’s are not impressive…plenty HAVE said it’s not enough balanced against all the TO’s.

Winston has thrown 88 interceptions and had 50 fumbles in just 72 career games. And Last night the Titans overcame impossible odds and beat the best team in the AFC. How? turnovers. 2 pics and a fumble by an otherwise MVP QB. Turnovers lose games!

If they said 50% of the posters here think turnovers aren’t the most important determining factor in winning a game I would agree with you but it’s not what was said. NDog is correct nobody has said interceptions don’t matter.
This is just like people claiming that anyone who wants to see Jameis return next year must think Jameis is perfect and that they only makes excuses for him. Everything has to be taken to the extreme. Life is full of nuance but it’s alway black or white to some folks.

Winston is still young and immature with too much hyper energy to start games. Coaches need to realize that and call some QB draw plays and let Winston run and absorb some hits to calm him down before calling too many pass plays.

I could only muster more faith in Jameis if he did something to make himself better. He needs to get some help on holding his mechanics together, getting his feet under him, and some way to get him to understand defenses.
If he doesn’t do that we are back to the same old same old with him. I don’t want him back but know he will be. Probably with a franchise tag. That might make him toxic. Being toxic, I don’t think he can do more damage than he did this past year.
My reckoning has him directly involved in six losses this year. That is something that will never get through the playoffs, if it even gets there.
Sign Jameis with the franchise tag, draft a QB, and pull Jameis when he goes off track. Turn overs do lose games.
A good coach does not try to mold a QB to his scheme, he molds the scheme to the QB. Trying to force Jameis through a square hole is never going to fix him.

BA’s offense is the 4 Vertical which is a play action based deep shot offense. QB is asked to look deep FIRST then back to short and sometimes QB has to wait on the WR, and that is why it looks like Winston is holding the ball too long.

Most pick sixes ever thrown came from short passes.
It’s difficult to score on an interception, say 80 yards down the field.
It’s silly to suggest you throw out a portion of the playbook and hamstring play calling because your QB has a penchant for throwing to the other team while deep in your own territory. smh

TBBF … Read an interesting article on a competitor’s website about tagging Jameis. It felt that the transition tag would be the least desirable path to take. It put the cost at $24.4 mil but it’d give us the opportunity to match any offers received. If we opt NOT to match any higher offer however, Jameis goes bye-bye and we receive Nada … Zip Zero Zilch. No two 1st Round picks in compensation, no $200 if we pass GO … nada. The non-exclusive franchise tag would apparently cost $26.9 mil ($2.5 mil more) BUT we would get the two 1st round compensatory picks if we let him go (still no $200 for passing GO however).
As I read that, I had to agree with them. Huge risk to save $2.5 mil. Two 1st Round picks is a HUGE bounty, and one that I personally don’t think any other team will be willing to pay. I’d rather see us lock him down with a Non-Exclusive Franchise tag, THEN fish around for trades. Letting your starting QB walk after 5 years WITHOUT getting anything in return is a really steep price to pay to ‘move on’.
Personally, I’m still deferring to BA on this one. Seems like one of those ‘Damned if you do; damned if you don’t’ challenges.

StPete … Sounds like you’re as torn as I am on the ‘Jameis issue’. One key reason I’m deferring to BA is because of something that Carson Palmer said the other day in an interview on the Rich Eisen Show …
““You need Year 1 to go back and watch the film and see yourself doing it wrong and the receivers seeing themselves doing it wrong and then Year 2, really things start to click. “It takes years for the quarterback and it takes years for the guys outside because there’s multiple opportunities where receivers have the opportunity to run one of two routes and they don’t make that decision and make that cut until they get to the top of the route. And that’s just something, you need time, you need experience within that system and that’s something you don’t have.”
I’d heard that BA’s system was complex, but I’d never heard that “THEY (receivers) DON’T MAKE THAT DECISION AND MAKE THAT CUT UNTIL THEY GET TO THE TOP OF THE ROUTE”. I’ve never heard of such a thing, and it’s hard to even envision how that’d work in real games. One thing’s for sure though … IF the QB & receivers aren’t on EXACTLY the same page, bad things will happen.
Maybe it really does take a 2nd year in BA’s ‘Bombs Away’ system to get the INTs down to a manageable level. I still personally think that such a system is a dinosaur, but that’s beside the point. The question I keep wrestling with is ‘Did BA’s system set Jameis up for failure?’ (LOTS of passing yards but LOTS of INTs also).
In the big scheme of things it may not matter all that much because overpaying a QB means that you have to skimp someplace else … OLine, running game, defense, whatever. The result is NOT a BALANCED TEAM in any event and would be unlikely to do well in the playoffs IMO … IF it even made the playoffs.

Agreed but this isn’t not half the fault of the coaching staff. Maybe don’t throw to unopened receivers.

The interceptions are the result of bad receivers routes, tipped balls, and offensive linemen allowing the quarterback to get hit.

Half of our fanbase are fantasy dorks that care more about Winston than the Bucs. We don’t need this dead weight.
