“Why Not?”

January 11th, 2020

Simple question.

On Monday, Joe wrote a speculative story wondering if presumed free-agent-to-be quarterback and future Hall of Famer Tom Brady might be sought by the Bucs.

It appears Brady’s days with the Patriots could end and some folks believe Brady’s arm is shot, that he can no longer throw deep. Others believe Brady has no one to throw the ball deep too, hence his problems.

Well, the Bucs are absolutely loaded at receiver, loaded at tight end, have a veteran throw-first, ask-questions-later coach and may need a quarterback. On Twitter, Joe got raked over the coals for even thinking about this, never mind Sports Illustrated wrote a very similar story a day or two later.

Well, you can add a third voice wondering if Brady playing for the Bucs is a pipe dream or not. And that would be former Bucs offensive lineman and current popular local podcaster and sports radio personality Ian Beckles.

Beckles took to his podcast “In the Trenches” and discussed Brady and the Bucs.

“Why can’t Tom Brady come here,” Beckles said he told a house guest last weekend. Beckles got a response from the guest, “That’s stupid.”

But Beckles isn’t so sure and laid out his thoughts on why Brady might find himself playing in Tampa Bay.

“Sometimes, the three letters ‘E-G-O’ get people in trouble,” Beckles said. “Ego gets people in trouble.” Beckles went on to speculate Brady might think the crowning jewel to his diamond-studded career would be to come to Tampa Bay and turn around the Bucs.

“Why wouldn’t Tom Brady come here?”

Beckles noted that no team could offer Brady the amount of passing weapons the Bucs have, not to mention a big chunk of Team Glazer loot to spend.

“You’ve got two great receivers,” Beckles detailed. “When you add [Breshad] Perriman, that might be three. How many teams can say that? We’ve got two tight ends we don’t know what to do with, that are talented. How many teams can say that? They will make him look good.

“Why not? Why not? He’s got to go somewhere. Why not?”

Of course, Beckles made it clear such a transaction is a long shot.

“Now I’m not betting my house on it because he’s still Tom Brady and he’s still [with] Giselle Bündchen. I don’t even know if they want to come to Tampa Bay. They seem more like LA-type people. I get that.”

Does Joe think Brady will wind up in an ugly Bucs uniform? That would be like Johnny Unitas wearing a Chargers powder-blue uniform or Joe Namath wearing a Rams uniform or Joe Montana wearing a Chiefs uniform.

Yeah, it would be weird, maybe ugly. And unlikely. But Joe’s not ruling it out.

The shot-callers at One Buc Palace love splash. Signing Brady to take over the Bucs at quarterback, even at 43 (his next birthday is in August), would be a hurricane-landfall type of splash.

Remember, the Bucs damn near had Brett Favre playing for them not so long ago.

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

Hmmm, I’m with Beckles’ guest … “That’s stupid.” Not for Tom Brady; for the Bucs. Brady will be FORTY-THREE YEARS OLD when we play the first 2020 game. Think about it for a second Ian.

Why do you post crap like this????

  6. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

who would be the OC? leftwich or brady?

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Defense Rules

Joe seems to think that if Brady came here, then, it would be like when Peyton Manning went to the Broncos or when Brett Farve went to the Vikings…..

  8. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

I have from a great source: not happening, no way

  9. Ricky Says:

Why not? I am not sure why you guys whine about it. Why not Brady for two years?
    Our defense is looking good.
Nobody else can offer the weapons we can offer him.
If Jameis can throw for 5000 imagine Brady. Even at 43 I am pretty sure he can do much better than Winston.
    So why not?

  10. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Nope Winston is our only hope and go draft a player to build in case. 43 years old? Lmao

  11. BeaverSqueezer Says:

What about bringing back Gradkowski? Trade for Sam Darnold?

  12. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

The Favre near miss is still haunting. That would have been incredibly fun and exciting. The Bucs offered more than the Jets as I recall…Pack wanted to keep him out if the NFC. Little did they know…

  13. stravenite Says:

“Nope Winston is our only hope”

Well let’s shut the bucs down if that is true, what a loser
attitude and closed mind, seems like you are really in the minority, checked Bucsnation poll right now and only 33 per cent
of voters want him back, sounds about right !

  14. Bird Says:

    Blame jameis

    Is that you webster ?
New name same whining . Your feelings get hurt cause some one questioning your nad crush
    Hang in there little guy

  15. BrianBucs Says:

With Winston at QB here the Bucs fan base continues to dwindle and their stadium keeps emptying out.
Bucs need to do something big at the QB position to excite and energize the fan base. Obviously bringing back Winston isn’t it.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Bucs make some gigantic move there.

No doubt. Good to see Ian rocking the IRON MAIDEN shirt.

I love listening to Ian, and he eats, sleeps & breathes the BUCS just like the rest of us do.

Well, the Falcons shat all over us, so I guess you are right.

  19. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Agreed limpchimpi… I was soooo wishing Favre was coming to Tampa. He and Chucky would have made a hell of run, I believe. As far as Brady? I just don’t think it’s a good fit. He needs great protection or quick reads type offense. I see Brady rolling off the field on a cart in BA’s offense. I think Gruden is going to do whatever it takes to get Brady to Vegas.

  20. Locked In Says:

    Marcus Mariota

    WHAT?????????????????
    YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Killian Says:

Hell yea! Draft a QB and sign Brady to a two year deal. Why wouldn’t any of us want him at center? He is still good, even if he can’t chuck the ball 60 yards down field. Brady has always excelled at short to intermediate throws, but his best quality is his football IQ. He can read defenses, which cannot be said of our current QB. He doesn’t turn the ball over either. Hell, if Edelman catches the ball that hits him right in the hands on 2nd and 6, the Pats would probably still be in the playoffs. Sign Brady and the fan base gets an instant shot of excitement. It makes sense from a football standpoint as well as from a business standpoint.

  24. RustyRhinos Says:

Looks like Beckles is eating at the Winston’s all you can eat free crab leg shack.

  25. Rob Says:

The idea of a 43 year old Brady leaving New England to somehow be the savior of the Bucs is literally one of the dumbest and most unlikely football storylines I’ve ever heard floated.

  26. John Sinclear Says:

    Can’t afford him.

Sign the defense to long term contracts, set aside money for the incoming draft, offer Jameis whatever’s left. If he runs, draft a QB such as Jalen Hurts. He’ll do. Well.

  28. Licht Headed Says:

    Insanely idiotic.

  29. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Killian, which QB are they going to draft? So you want a washed up GOAT for a year and then we are stuck with some scrub QB we reached for in the 2nd or 3rd round and we are back in Glennon Land for the next seven years, including the two that the senior citizen would be here. Brady is washed up now, why would I want him failing here. It would be pretty epic to watch Jameis go to New England and win a few super bowls while we are trying to figure out who we can bring in to replace Jake Fromm or Jalen Hurts as Bucs fans realize they suck compared to what we had in Jameis. It would almost be worth it to all the fans we have that don’t have common sense.

  30. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

LMAO, and as I type that post we have another dumb fan advocating for Jalen Hurts. Yeah lets run off the 5K, 33 TD passing QB for Jalen Hurts.

  31. Bosch Says:

Hey BlameJameis. The poop on your car is not Jameis’s fault. And for that matter, it wasn’t even the birds. It is I who pooped on your car.

    “Insanely idiotic.”

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

  33. Buccfan37 Says:

It’s time for Brady to dry up and blow away.

  34. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

It’s funny how all the Winston haters always have to resort to name calling and bashing another buc fan. Why is that? Just state your point and that will do just fine. We as fans will never agree and that’s fine. At the end of the day nobody knows how this will all turn out and we will still all be supporting this team no matter who is playing. Damn I was a season ticket holder when Josh McCown was QB yet I still supported them. Live and die a Buc! Go Bucs! Go Jameis!

  35. MirrorMirrowOnTheWall Says:

I would love to see Brady come to Tampa and play behind that offensive line the Buccaneers have. What a bad way to end your career. Mean while Jameis goes on to become the first quarterback to pass for 6,000 yards 60 touchdowns with 5 interceptions and win three or four consecutive Super Bowl leading the next dynasty in the NFL. Of course he will be playing with receivers that can run out routes and comeback routes properly.

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

Please..Let Brady go on out to pasture. And Beckles keep doin what you do best..Eatin (like pictured) and talkin Sh..

  37. Skipper Says:

Brady won’t come to Tampa with this offensive line, he couldn’t take the beating.

  38. jmarkbuc Says:

Brady didn’t win 6 rings by being ignorant.

Brady wouldn’t get within 1000 miles of this dysfunctional organization

  39. Pewter power Says:

Not saying it will happen but the wife wont go for it argument is the stupid part about the argument. What makes anyone think they have to pack up their house and move their family for one or two years. Guess he has to save every penny so cant buy a house anywhere he goes!!!!

His wife isn’t at home sitting and waiting for him she has her own thing and can visit anytime so really why think about what the bucs were before he would become quarterback. He will undoubtedly look at the weapons teams have to offer period end of story. For him to consider coming they’d still have to dream up a run game

  40. stpetebucsfan Says:

D.R. Oh NOES! How can old dudes like us play the age card? LMAO

I certainly take your point but there is plenty of precedence of QB’s in their 40’s being successful…You’re old enough to remember George Blanda at 48…I get that was because he hung on as a kicker and got a freakish opportunity to start.

But there are plenty of others like Vinny Testeverde, Earl Morrell, Doug Flutie…but taking your point they were exceptional.

So do we believe Tom Brady is exceptional. Personally I’ve never been a Brady fan but I’ve always respected him. Not just for all of his SB titles but because he is obsessed with his conditioning and diet. The dude is nothing if not FOCUSED AND MOTIVATED. If he wanted to play here I believe he could get the job done for a couple of years. We would still draft a QB very high…maybe even first if we found the right guy…but IF we found a guy who better than Brady to mentor him…how many times has he already done that.

Ian brought up a good point about whether Tampa would be to slow paced after Boston and LA.

And of course John Sinclair posed a critical question. “Can’t afford him.”

Perhaps…Brady has been well known to give the Pats discounts playing below market value for the sake of the team. Brady’s famous wife made 30 million in 2015 alone. Put their salaries together over the past decade and they’ve earned more than a quarter BILLION $$$!!!! Brady can “afford” LMAO to play where he wants. Money issues will take a back seat.

Brady’s top three considerations for where to play next year.

    1.)Where can I win?

    2.)Where can I win?

    3.)Where can I win?

Brady wants to go out a winner. BA wants to go out a winner. BOTH of them need and want to win NOW.

I think Ian was spot on. Don’t bet the farm but far stranger things have occurred.

  41. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Pewter Power

You just made an excellent point. I should have ignored the part about whether they prefer LA to Tampa.

There are really nice private homes on the water on Davis and Harbour Islands and both are a stones throw from Ray Jay and TIA where they would catch their private jet to fly back and forth.

If it was good enough for Beyonce it’s good enough for Giselle. Tom won’t care he just wants to WIN.

He may be the only athlete out there more desperate to win than we Bucs fans.

  42. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

FA Brady, FA DB, draft QB #1, RB #2… head to the promised land baby

  43. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Oh Nancy you poor thing. Jameis will be under center in 2020. Maybe you could move you and your husband to Boston or LA or wherever Brady ends up.

  44. stpetebucsfan Says:

A thought for the Jameis lovers. We get it…you love him..some of us do not.

But there is a huge gap between love and hate. You guys make me laugh when you keep on thinking that those of us who believe we can do better than JW will be dramatically upset if we keep him.

I realize nuance is not prized on a sports blog but really. Imagine this. Posters here who have the “opinion” that we should cut bait with JW could actually totally root for him. I know I shall if he’s a Buc…and depending where he lands if he leaves I’ll still root for him unless he’s facing the Bucs or playing for a division rival.

This is supposed to be fun! Why would I allow a personnel decision determine how hard I cheer for the Bucs or JW if he’s still here. IMHO I let him walk or move him somehow…BUT… If JW is a Buc…I’ll be all in. It’s actually possible to hold those two thoughts in your brain at the same time.

As F Scott Fitzgerald said…”The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.”

  45. D1 Says:

    Killian,

Thing is, Brady can still chuck the ball 60yds downfield.

  46. D1 Says:

    Skipper,

Brady would improve the offense line x2 . It’s not at all accurate to say the o line would play the same with Brady as winston.

If the oline stayed the same, Brady would elevate their play far beyond anything winston has done. That’s a partial knock on winston not an indictment.

For the it’s impossible to find a better option than winston, contingent. And their doomsday prophecy ” any attempt to do so will somehow involve Mike Glennon and scoring 10pts a game. ” take a step back and think about how preposterous that entire line of thinking is. Actually, certifiably insane is more descriptive of how anyone can post such a nonsensical and mystical line of refuse. It literally has more in common with old testament prophecy than anything else.
