It’s difficult to argue Jameis Winston is a better quarterback overall than he was one year ago.
And a three-time Pro Bowler is pointing a finger at Bucco Bruce Arians.
And you know what? Arians deserves it. His regime is all about accountability, so it’s fair to say that America’s Quarterback giving the football away like it’s Halloween candy is not just a colossal failure by Jameis, but it’s a black mark on the Arians and his resident quarterback gurus.
Yes, Joe believes Arians is a superior coach of quarterbacks. It’s why Joe hoped the Bucs drafted a quarterback last year in the very late rounds of the draft; you take advantage of your strengths rather than running from them.
Still, Arians can’t get an “A” for his work with Jameis. Keeping Jameis at one interception per game maximum (his career average before Arians arrived) was a major priority and Jameis nearly threw two per game.
DeAngelo Hall spent 14 years playing cornerback in the NFL and was one of the best ballhawks in the game for a stretch of years. Now he’s occasionally doing analyst work on NFL Network, where he had words for the Bucs head coach during an assessment of Jameis.
“Hey, Bruce Arians. C’mon, baby. Do you job, B.A. Coach him up, man,” Hall said. “You can coach ball security and you can coach decision-making.”
Of course, one easily could argue that after 70 starts, and the benefits of a tireless work ethic and elite coaching, Jameis had reached his ceiling and the turnovers won’t subside much in future seasons unless his team has a powerful running game.
Hall added in support of keeping Jameis with the Bucs, “there ain’t much on the market.”

Jameis doesn’t seem to understand the concept of ball security. Maybe it is because his accuracy is sometimes not good enough to worry with he, he just chucks a duck out there and hopes his receiver comes down with it.
Sometimes those ducks don’t even get close enough for the receiver to try. Those are the kind that many claim were the receiver’s fault. I would doubt that based on just the sheer volume of picks he has thrown.
If he comes back we need a competition at QB that also covers ball security, not just watching balls fly.

I remember when Koetter would go full turtle after a bad game with Jameis. Fans would get so mad, but the Bucs would win the game or at least have a chance to win, without Jameis throwing 4 picks.

QUESTION: Tampa had the highest passing yards and paltry rushing yards. I wonder if that is less about the team’s abilities and more a result of the opponent goading Tampa into throwing more? It’s a good game plan because: A) Opponents knew JW would throw picks (especially early), and B) Arians/Leftwitch wouldn’t alter the game plan?
Let’s face it: The only reason JW is the only 30/30 QB ever is because other coaches wouldn’t tolerate turnovers for that long.

Tennessee has a top 5 oline, a top 6-7 RB, A top 10 defense in yards and top 3 PPG defense and dont be surprised if they make a run. It literally has nothing to do with their QB.
Tennessee passed for 72 yards 1 TD and 1 INT.
Its not rocket science. Solidify the oline get a game changer at RB. The only benefit of having a top QB is if you do fall behind you have a QB that can bring you back. Tennessee wont have that luxury if they fall behind. But if you stay within striking distance then you let a RB like Henry bring it home for you.
Regardless of what Tampa Does at QB. Dont waste an early draft pick on a QB finish solidifying the line and get a game changer at QB. Franchise JW if you want to see what he does year 2. If he fails Trade up in the 2021 draft and get a Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence or JT Daniels. Which ever one you can trade up to get.

Trade for Nick Foles he’s got 3 years left on his contract and the last year only a little guaranteed money then draft a QB in the second or third round. Sign all your Defensive free agents and sign Demar Dotson for one year and draft a tackle with your 1st or 2 nd round pick. Draft a running back with 3 rd or 4 th pick. Play in super bowl 2021 easy peasy.

Craig some of those picks were WR and QB not being on the same page due to it being a new offensive scheme. If it takes a QB 8 weeks to get BA’s playbook down I would assume it would take WR around the same time to get down the reads and reactions based on how DB’s and Safeties are playing them.
Dont get me wrong JW is responsible for a lot of his INT’s but looking at it as a former player who played WR many routes werent good. I remember analyst used to get onto AJ green because most of Andy Daltons INT’s were to AJ and it was because he would run bad routes or not attack the ball regularly on contested passes.
Many of those out routes JW threw pics on the routes were poorly run. Anytime you start your break on the 15 you need to be at the 15 trying to catch the ball. Ideally you would want them coming one yard forward to meet the pass. Same on a hitch. You don’t just stand there waiting for the ball to come because if the defender is waiting at the top of your route they are breaking on the ball to break it up. They aren’t waiting for you to catch it. In many cases if crisp routes were ran it would have likely ended up as only a PD or even PI if the defender gets there to early. Many times the WR would be completely out of the play due to either fading on the or in the cased of the last pick 6 Cam Brate firmly planted waiting on the ball to get to him. I think that last drop was in Brates head honestly. He doesn’t run poor routes like that.

Could have a market where Brady, Breese, rivers, Flaco, Rosen, anyone in the fraft, Dak, Dalton ect could all be on the market. Not saying I want them but there could be more playoff appearing qbs on the market than ever before.
Also, would you want Herbert from Oregon plus 20 million to spend on players… that could be an option too (not my vote). DeAngelo used to be called MeAngelo when he played, now I guess hes called DumbAngelo.

Jameis’ deep ball numbers and red zone numbers improved dramatically. As well as 5000+ yards.
Arians offense is ideal for him and the talent we have at wide receiver.
The turnovers are part of his game unfortunately, Favre never improved in that area.
Run the ball better and keep improving on defense and were fine.

Yes Eric those are good points and parts of Winston’s game that improved to those who look beyond the hard stats. Another thing that has improved is Winston’s fumbling problem. This never gets brought up but it is gone. It’s not a thing anymore.
I also struggle with decision making. Is it better or not? Winston does not seem to throw wild passes into triple coverage like he used to. He does throw the ball away more. I think the decision making is actually better………He biggest problem now seems to be reading defenses and coverages. This could be in part to learning a new offense. Next year he could improve just knowing the offense better. Now he can focus more on the opposing defense.
Also gotta think they are going to change some of these route designs. There gotta be a better way to run to hese plays that help eliminate INTs off of simple out, slant, curl routes ect.
Improvements are there just most can’t see it cause they can’t get past 30 picks. Not crazy to assume more improvement will be made in 2020.

For the 4 years prior to 2019, Jameis Winston averaged 1 INT per 33 pass attempts, vs 1 INT per 21 pass attempts in 2019.
So there is at least ample evidence to show that the turnovers could be improved pretty dramatically.
We’ll see. If we go with Winston in 2021 he is basically the whole story of the season because the defense / team in general should be competitive if they keep the pieces together.

I love how all these clowns just assume that nobody is ever trying to coach Winston out of turning the ball over. That’s been the single biggest thing any of these coaches has tried to do with him since he got into the league, but they can’t go out on the field and hold his hand during the game.
I don’t care how much work they put into the guy, he will throw it where he wants to throw it.
Don’t ever forget the Saints game a couple years ago, last game of the season, and he point blank said he was forcing the ball to Evans so he could get his 1000 yards for the season. I’m sure that was part of the game plan, right?
You could do all the hollering you want and show him every film in the vault, he’s still going to throw lazy comebacks that will get returned for six. It’s a fact of life.

i thin kthe same kind of wild probability is at play in the kind of season Jameis had as you might find in those years where a guy breaks the TD record or a team goes 15-1. It’s the same or similar person\team from one year to the next, but alot of crazy stuff happened that year to push numbers to a more extreme place.
Outlier seasons – positive or negative – tend to not repeat. they rarely end up resetting the standard for that player and becoming the new normal. When i see Jameis throw more INTs than he did in the last 2 years combined, being one of the very few to ever break 5,000 yards, and throwing more pick sixes than he had in pretty much his whole career…….I’m betting on positive regression on the picks and pick-sixes and proabably a drop in yardage in 2020.
as far as “is\was he better”, the bucs finished more drives with points than ever before and the passing game did alot of the work. that’s hard to ignore given how erratic the team has been inside the 20 under the previous playcaller(s)

In math it’s called a “common denominator.” One variable remains the same while others change.
I never proclaimed to be a smart man but, putting 2+2 here is pretty easy.
I will say, however, that I look forward to all the neat, nuanced little excuses to explain away something that is so obviously INHERENT.
Jameis ain’t going to change!!! Which means that you have to come to grips with two possible scenarios:
1. You cannot live with the turnovers and move on from Jameis OR…
2. You try and surround Jameis with enough talent to overcome the turnovers.
The turnovers will ALWAYS be there!
Arians cannot just simply “coach” the turnovers out of him, sorry. That’s the truth.

You left out Jensen’s flatulence problem. He frequently rips a bad one which disorients JW…causes his eyes to water…harms his vision…and he has difficulty seeing his targets.
Perhaps in addition to an HOF RB…best OL in the league..top D…we already have the top receivers…we can get someone to improve Jensen’s diet and cut down on his fart attacks next year.
Of course THAT excuse only works for the past two years. But JW supporters can always provide a plethora of excuses for those first three.

I say give Jameis one more year in the same offense since it even took Carson Palmer a year to be successful in BA’s offense. Therefore, franchise him.
Rd 1 – RB Swift, Dobbins, Etienne, or Harris: A primetime RB would help to reduce the pressure on the QB position in this offense.
Rd 2 – QB Jake Fromm: This guy will be the second coming of Drew Brees, remember, I said that first.
JW gets a chance to show growth in a second year offense. If he can’t, then it’s time for a change, bench him and bring Fromm in.
And BA, it’s one thing to let your protege Leftwich be the OC, but Christensen as the QB coach? It’s either time for you to get off the golf cart and get and be the QB whisperer, or ride that cart into retirement!

the difference was he was playing with 5* players at every level on both sides of the ball and playing in the ACC before Clemson became dominate…..
the titans, ravens and 9ers proved this is still a ground and pound league….running the ball and playing good defense is the key to success…..

Stop with the excuses, he is an NFL starting quarterback, a veteran quarterback why did his deep ball accuracy and mechanics improve? He is being coached up but BA is no miracle worker.

Great website but questionable honest Winston reviews of QB play. My goodness even JP Peterson saw the light…that says tons. I also think JP knows something that happened in the locker room this year that has made him turn. When will that story be told? Whispering is getting louder. Too many people trying to appease the QB, who has led this team to nothing. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while but not Winston. He is near sighted (excuse # 182939).

I have said it many, many times on this board. Jaymiss is the missing child of Jeff George.
Anyone who remembers Jeff George will understand why I say this. George had all the talent in the world, cannon for an arm and deadly accurate at times. But he tossed INT after INT and it did not phase him in the least. Jaymiss is the same way. The 30 INT this season do not phase him. Just like George could not be fixed, neither will Jaymiss ever be fixed.

Wasn’t there an article on this site during this past season about our QB coach, Clyde Christensen basically admitting in an interview that not only has Winston already received terrific coaching in the NFL (meaning Koetter), but that Winston is who he is and that his interception problems aren’t really fixable?

So if I understand right D’Angelo, no player has EVER failed? It’s ALWAYS been their coach’s fault? Sorry but THAT’S horsepuckey. In my time as a fighter pilot instructor, the hardest thing to teach IMO was JUDGMENT, ie, how to deal instantaneously with constantly changing situations. Some pilots ‘get it’ a LOT faster AND a LOT better than some others. And some never got it … in some areas … regardless of how many opportunities they got to develop that judgment, and they subsequently washed out of the program. Maybe I’m wrong, but I suspect it’s very similar with QBs … they can be very good in some areas but never ‘get it’ in some others, for ‘whatever’ reasons. And THAT becomes their Achilles Heel.

OMG our fans are so dumb. In this thread I have seen Nick Foles, Case Keenum and Jake Fromm suggested as QBs and claiming that will fix everything. Foles has been benched in Jax behind a porn stached scrub QB. Keenum is a career back up and Fromm is regressing in college. If you guys want to lose 31-13 week in and week out well then these three are definitely your peeps. I want to win again. If we had a real NFL kicker and the refs weren’t morons whistling fumbles dead the Bucs would have finished 10-6 with Jameis have an outrageous number of INTs. The turnovers will come down this year closer to his career average and the Bucs will win a lot of games. I want no part of these scrubs you guys are suggesting.

I know one thing that would probably make Winston stop throwing picks, give him $30 million a year. $21 million with the opportunity to get possibly $80 million guaranteed on his next contract wasn’t quite enough to get him to think on a football field. Maybe if we let him play on a one year $28 million franchise tag he’ll open his eyes a little wider and see the defense too.
Just a thought……..or, maybe somebody once and for all in his adult life needs to let him know that actions deserve consequences, good and bad. We have a narcissist at QB that thinks he “balled out” this year and has no remorse whatsoever for leading the NFL in interceptions, BY 9 PICKS!
Most of his INT’s were less than 10 yards from the line of scrimmage, so it’s not like he was trying to thread needles, he just doesn’t know right from wrong on a football field…or in life in general apparently based on his known rap sheet.

I absolutely HATE the facts that Arians isn’t calling plays. I love everything about this teams roster and staff but Leftwich is not good. He’s got a good playbook and working with a good offense, but calls the right plays at the wrong times.
Jameis getting worse in his contract year is a clear sign. You can’t hire someone to be an extension of your brain. You can teach them all you want but at the end of the day the plays are not being called the same way Bruce would call them. At this point I am just praying someone is dumb enough to hire Leftwich as a head coach….but that will never happen. Fix the run game, stop being predictable when you DO run the ball and it will help Winstonrelax back there.

The problem is that there are two Joes to contend with who differ in opinions. So conveniently they use each others comments to cover both sides of a debate.
I.E. One Joe just said,

Let’s stop pretending there aren’t options at QB coming to the free agent market. Two or three future hall of famers could possibly be available. Multiple QBs that have led their teams to the playoffs may hit the market….There’s options, don’t kid yourself and BA’s time horizon is pretty short term which makes me believe the window for winning with this team is 3-4 yrs. I really believe the Glazers want a real shot at the Super Bowl in their own stadium and after watching 30 Interceptions with Winston and only 1 with 4 winning playoff QBs, they may know that will never be possible with Mr ATM

Unless we are trading for Matthew Stafford or Andrew Luck (If he is %100 and has a fire in his belly) I think that Jameis is our best bet for this year. None of the free agent quarterbacks excite me in Arian’s offense. Gotta get a quarterback sometime after round one though.

Did Drew Brees reach his ceiling 5 years into the league? Did Peyton Manning?
The answer is no. Jameis absolutely got better mechanically this year and was more accurate on deep passes than he has been in his whole career and he is still improving.
This was his 1st season in a new scheme! One more year of experience and improved running game and the turnovers are guaranteed to the drop!

The secondary was bad with Heargraves. But, Heargraves did stop MCaffrey to win in week 2. I do believe we lost the first game of the year, at home to the 49ers, bc of 2 pick sixes.

He led the league in completions with 20+ air yards with 41 of them. Double his previous career high. Jameis had the best year of his career throwing the deep ball. Anyone who watched the games this year and wasnt completely biased knows and admits this.
Also this was his 1st year in a new scheme. A vertical passing scheme at that where typically completion percentage is in the mid to low 60s.
I firmly believe he will be a 2020 mvp candidate.

The coach’s motto is no risk it no biscuit for Pete’s sake. Without looking up the info I’d guess Winston was probably top 3-4 in air yards with a high percentage of targets that went to wr’s. The Buc TE’s and RB’s we’re below average in the pass game. RoJo 20th n Dare 25th in yardage and Howard 18th in yards.
No risk it no biscuit needs to be changed to less risk more reward.

Sigh…anyone who compares Winston to Brees or Manning – two HOF QBs who did what WON!! Both had multiple 10+ win seasons within first 5. Winston is nowhere close to that.
Winston got better this year mechanically? Go back and roll thru the all-22 again.Worst feet in the NFL and dont get me started on pre-snap reads and staring WR down.

Donuts- They compare the QBs because if you take their 1st 5 years in the league- they are similar. STOP thinking people are comparing the HOF QBs that they have become because NOBODY is doing that. Stop trying to manipulate the words people are using. YOU nor anybody else knows how JW will develop. The other 2 became HOF guys, JW has every opportunity to do the same. Also to say Winston is a middle of the pack starter in the NFL is nothing more than your opinion. He can’t play defense, he can’t play special teams- If he did, I bet he wouldn’t have taken the ball out of the end zone twice only to be tackled at our 10 and put us in a hole, and he cannot kick FGs. This is the ultimate team sport. Defense is on the rise, ST still sucks minus the punter and kickoffs, and our kicker has potential, but killed us in 2 games. Everyone wanted Cousins out of Minnesota, the media, the fans and even his 2 WRs. Good thing they didn’t listen to the media and the morons, isn’t it?

Winston first off is not a good human being. Yeah kids might have things covered up in college like himself, manning, winslow the list goes on. In the nfl he still made bad personal mistakes , so did ray lewis, mike erving and such. Yeah he did not commit any crimes like they did but he did have some interruptions. In the long run he might be a good player but his mind is doing something else.
Imo we get another qb for a year or 2 and we need someone holding a clipboard for those years. All you people that think we can draft a qb and change immediately are crazy. How many 1st round QBs are successful? At the same time how many good QBs nowadays sat on the sideline and watched mistakes happen and learn or take off their mentor? Just a few brady,Rodgers, mahomes, and im sure there is more. Sign suh, jpp, the NFL sack leader! and draft o line.
