Grade Carl Nassib (Embedded Poll)

January 6th, 2020

Fans did a great job responding to grading Vita Vea, so Joe’s going to keep it rolling with fellow defensive lineman and linebacker Carl Nassib.

Nassib had a fascinating 2019 season for one main reason.

His statistics were nearly identical to what he put out in 2018.

Nassib took 56 percent of the snaps this season and 57 percent in 2018. Nassib racked up 6 sacks in 2019 after 6 1/2 in 2018. His tackle numbers were similar, too, though overall Nassib was a little more successful behind the line of scrimmage in 2018, versus 2019.

Nassib, 26, lost two games with a groin injury this season, one Bucco Bruce Arians blamed on extensive travel. But Nassib bounced back well and finished strong.

An important rotational player after Jason Pierre-Paul returned from injury, Nassib was named team captain prior to the season and is a valuable asset. But how valuable? Nassib could be an unrestricted free agent in March and there’s always a strong market for young guys who can rush the passer.

You can grade Nassib’s 2019 season below:

    He was solid when healthy

  2. Wesley Says:

C- didn’t do much this season.

  3. bojim Says:

    B- Resign him.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

    B
    re-sign him

    GO BUCS!!!!

  5. stpetebucsfan Says:

I gave him an A because I grade on the curve.

I judge a player by whether or not he lived up to our expectations before the season…not whether he was the best player at his position. Nassib gave us exactly what we paid him for despite missing a couple games.

We didn’t sign Nassib to be a star…we signed him to be dependable depth with perhaps an occasional start. Based on those metrics I gave him an A.

  6. LaMarcus Says:

    C player

  7. Sleepy903 Says:

6 sacks, 10 TFL, 1 ff in 14 games as a rotational player. Thats a solid season. Along with many hustle plays that dont show on the stat sheet.

  8. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

6 sacks in 14 games In a rotational spot is great!

Even if Clueless Joe can’t pronounce his name correctly he’s gotta admit that’s great production from a rotational player

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He is a very good player and we need to keep him……>B

  10. buccs99 Says:

C+, good rotational player with energy and leadership however i would not want him as a full 16 game starter. just doesnt produce enough from that aspect. was quiet a lot of the season and not one person can remember one of his sacks being in a pivotal portion of the game.

that said, you keep a guy like him if the price is right. however, i dont see him being in tampa as someone will overpay for his talents.

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

He’s a solid player and the Bucs cannot afford to let solid players walk.

  12. Marine Buc Says:

I would love to keep him but he will be a back up here behind Shaq and JPP. We can’t afford to pay him starter money. But another team will probably be willing to pay him starter money. I honestly don’t think Nassib will be a Buc next year. I hope I’m wrong.

  13. Fartman Says:

he’s good for what he is… but make no mistake…. we need to lock down Shaq and JPP first.

  14. Cobraboy Says:

Solid, solid player who should be resigned.

The problem this offseason is nobody knows what the new CBA will look like, so who wants a long-term deal?

  15. SteveK Says:

    “B”

Reliable, consistent, a leader. Bring back the front 7: Shaq, JPP, Suh and Carl!

  16. ClodHopper Says:

I have him a C because he didn’t do much early but did pretty good late in the year.

But St Pete, you make a good point. He did more than I expected out of him so I should raise his grade.

  17. Robert Says:

    why the bra?

  18. Siege the Bay Says:

@Robert its used in most sports these days, tracks speed, physical exertion, calories, distance traveled, all kinds of measurables. Basically monitors if a guy is loafing or not.

  19. Robert Says:

    thx

  20. BigHog Says:

Sign him but no guarantees if you can. Draft well to make it a competitive off season and see who comes to to play in 2020!!

  21. jjbucfan Says:

Worth 6-8 mill tops- if he wants more- peace out. I love the hustle of this guy and I think he makes a lot more plays than are in those stats. He crashes the pocket and forces the QB to step into sacks frequently. But we cannot overpay him…We have other people we have to overpay. I hope we keep Suh, JPP and Shaq as well. Most of all, need to re-sign Jameis. Don’t strat with me- every other article is about this, LOL.

  22. Conte Piscateli Says:

This guy is all motor, his value is on his energy and effort. We need more of these kind of players

  23. D-Rome Says:

I graded him at a B. He’s not an elite edge rusher but not everyone playing the DE position is going to be elite. He does his job and does it well.

  24. Colorado Says:

C for sure. He wasn’t a liability but he sure as hell wasn’t great.

  25. thomas farkas Says:

I graded him a B. Would love to have him back but I suspect some pass rush starved team will overpay to get him. I actually think he fits better as a DE in a 4-3 scheme and I think Bucs will choose not too spend too much on trying to get him back. He has great motor but a bit undersized for a 3-4 end and not quite mobile enough as lb in that 3-4 scheme!

    Resign …
    Attitude #1

  27. adam from ny Says:

    B+ to A-

you can not grade his against the other players…you must grade him against himself…

he has become quite the player since being tossed to the waiver wire

  28. COREYATX Says:

I gave him a B due to the fact that he exactly what was expected of him. He’s a solid depth/rotational player who won’t take a down off. He did nothing more, nothing less. Solid B player. You need these guys as much as your stars.

  29. adam from ny Says:

    carl “the arabian knight” nassib…

    #HePrefersHisHelmetToHisTurban

  30. catcard202 Says:

Nassib is perfect for what Bowles wants in a rotational role player.

You don’t build you team around guys like him, but he’s the exact kind of low risk known commodity you fill your 2-deep roster with, as you know exactly what you are buying & how he can help the franchise on SUN’s.

  31. Josh Groover Says:

For the amount of money he makes? A+++. But if he wants 8+ mill for this production? C+

  32. ManzielMadness Says:

Good player give him a B. Does well setting the edge.

  33. Buczilla Says:

I gave him an A because I think he gave us all that he is capable of giving in 2019 as a rotational guy. He’s also a team captain, so he must be doing something right in the locker room as well. Based on talent alone, I couldn’t give him more than a C. This game takes more than just talent though. Nassib is worth keeping as long as he doesn’t ask for the moon.

  34. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

He is a solid rotational guy so he deserves a B for his role. If I was grading him as a starter, I would be much less optimistic.
Nassib seems like a smart guy, he knows his role and his value. Give him the Will Gholston contract.

  35. AwShbucs Says:

I’d give him a C. Would have been a B player if he didnt let so many sacks slip through his hands.

  36. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

A for what he is. Met all expectations.

  37. Cobraboy Says:

@ Alaska: Will Gholston played exceptionally well this season. Finally, a DC knew how to use his physical talents.

  38. ClwJB Says:

Love the hustle but will he take a team friendly deal after we break the bank for Shaq and JPL?

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Excellent performance as a rotational player. Solid B. Probably $7 mil will do it, although someone may offer him $1 or $2 mil over that if we can’t work a deal in the days leading up to FA. In 4th position though in terms of re-signing the DLine: JPP, Barrett, Suh then Carl.

Thinking that $46 mil will do it for all 4, plus another $4 mil for Minter, Ryan Smith, Adams & Nacho. We’ve got another $37.4 already invested for 2020 in 15 players who’ll surely make the team so that’d bring us to $87.4 mil for 23 players. Add a high draft pick DT/DE plus a veteran Safety and we’d be around $95 mil for 25 defensive players. That’s probably $5 mil or so more than we can afford to spend on defense, so we may end up foregoing the veteran Safety. Bummer, we need him.

  40. PRBucFan Says:

    Same here Pete

    A-

  41. Boltsfan17 Says:

C player all the way around. Does nothing remarkable.

  42. Tackleblockwin Says:

Always hustles and gives it his all. Plus his stats are pretty good for rotational DE.

    Lol

  44. Old School Athlete Says:

He’s better than a C player. If he was just a C player, we should able to replace him and upgrade at that position easily and we can’t. I love the improved D line play, but if we don’t start protecting the football, we will remain perennial losers.

  45. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

Solid player. I give him an A, because he and Barrett work well together when he is in the rotation. And he and Barrett scheme on the bench constantly when offense is in. Motor never stops and has a great attitude.

  46. Brad Says:

    Best ability is availability

  47. Adrnagy Says:

It took 3 bulls to turn the mentality around. Jpp. Suh. Nassib.

  48. Spacecoast Justin Says:

Hopefully we can keep this D-line together. It was fun watching the Bucs get after the QB this year… especially after JPP returned.

  49. pepsi Says:

    I needed a B- or C+ option

    AMEN!

  51. Brandon Says:

Carl works extremely hard on the field and does tons of dirty work that never shows up on stats, like chipping a RB to slow him getting into a route, takes on double teams to keep other players clean, etc. He he is a very valuable player whose best years are still ahead of him. I think he more than earned a new contract at around $8 mil per season. Good starter, great reserve. Can play four positions, just not NT. JPP and Barrett then Nassib. They must be re-signed.

  52. Lavonte 1of1 Says:

He’s really good depth that used the right way can produce steady results.

    keep ’em

  53. SB Says:

JOE……………You really should exclude Trollmax from voting.

  54. Owlykat Says:

Solid backup is needed who can get sacks for us. I give him a b plus but keeping our front in tact is paramount first.

  55. MadMax Says:

C+, rotational…and with Shaq and JPP hopefully coming back with Suh, i dont think we can afford him unless he’s willing to be team friendly. Hard player though!

  56. Big Tay Says:

B- I love what he does for motivation, his energy and he keeps the people around him better. I would love to see Tampa give him a similar deal to that of Gholston, maybe 5-years, $30 million with $15 million guaranteed and I would add some incentives in there for sacks. I love watching him play, keep him in Tampa!

  57. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I gave him a C, but regretted not giving him a B the moment I submitted. Darn it.

The kid is on the upswing. His stats don’t say it all. Some of the sacks others got were because Nassib brought the pressure.

That side, the 90 mil in cap space is looking smaller all the time.
