Friction Between Jameis, Leftwich?

January 6th, 2020

Disputes, per local report.

Joe has to confess; at Bucs games Joe rarely has binoculars on the sidelines monitoring interactions between coaches and Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

But apparently there is some friction between Jameis and Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. This information comes from veteran Tampa Bay sports voice and multimedia czar, J.P. Peterson on his WWBA-AM 820 radio show.

Peterson, who also hosts a Bucs pregame show on WMOR-TV Channel 32, claims he has heard Jameis and Leftwich are not exactly best of friends and the two have had hollering matches with each other.

Peterson also added he heard this from “a quarterback” who played in the NFL, but Peterson did not identify.

“The relationship between quarterback, offensive coordinator and head coach obviously is critical,” Peterson began. “The body language [in the final game] was really, really bad. There was that moment where [Jameis] came off on third-and-20 and looked like he was pissed off at Bruce Arians.

“And this is interesting — it was also mentioned by one of the quarterbacks I talked to today — that when Jameis comes off the field now, you notice that he goes straight to Bruce Arians. Or Arians goes straight to him. It’s not Leftwich.

“And we already know that he and Leftwich have had a couple of shouting matches this year. Now look, I’m not one to put much stock into those things. … It’s an emotional game. Those things happen. And I’m not here to say I know what that relationship is, with he and Leftwich is about.

“But I just found it interesting that this quarterback pointed it out that Bruce is talking to him as he comes off the field. I just thought it was interesting that he would not that. If he and Leftwich are not on the same page, that’s an issue.”

Now this is all news to Joe about Jameis and Leftwich having an abrasive relationship, and about 10 days ago Leftwich’s friend and former teammate Max Starks talked about how much Leftwich likes working with Jameis. But from what Joe had heard previously from past Bucs coaches, if Jameis is barking with Leftwich, this is actually a good thing.

In a roundabout way, it’s what former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter and his staff were trying to get Jameis to do .

Joe was told Jameis is very much a yes-sir, no-sir, follow-orders kind of a guy. How it was explained to Joe was there were often times a play was sent in to Jameis and when the defense broke the huddle, it was clear to the coaches the play was doomed.

But Jameis didn’t like audibling out of plays. Jameis thought the coaches knew what they wanted and combined with Jameis’ (too strong?) confidence, he always thought he could make a play work. That sometimes blew up in his face.

Koetter longed for Jameis to cuss him out for calling a bad play and to audible to a different play that had a better chance.

Joe actually told the following story to Koetter that dealt with this subject. Joe had read a book that claimed Johnny Unitas said you are not a pro quarterback until you can tell your head coach to go to hell.

When Joe recounted that excerpt to Koetter, his face lit up and he said, “He’s right!”

So if Jameis’ body language and reported shouting matches with Leftwich are true, maybe Arians and Leftwich are finally making headway with Jameis where Koetter and his staff didn’t?

There is no direct link to the podcast in question but the audio is located here. Page down to the Dec. 30 show and this Jameis-Leftwich subject comes up at the 43:45 mark.

  1. Easy Says:

It will only get worse, its time to move on from Jameis.

  2. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

For a QB who was hailed as a “Pro Ready” and “high football IQ” why is he so scared to audible? Why does he play so dumb for a smart kid?

  3. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Jameis needs to be humble enough to be coached. If the ints are coming because he won’t listen which is what I was getting from Arians that would be super frustrating.

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

Dump Winston now you have QB free agents available and plenty of QBs in the 2020 draft now is the time to part ways.

  5. Sport Says:

interesting story, how could there not be friction? JW was playing for a $100M contract extension and BL is trying to prove himself capable of HC position in the future. They are also both competitors. Friction is normal, especially with the erratic results (see 30/30 guy).

Someone knows the answer to the JW dilemma….

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If it comes down to Leftwich or Jameis……Jameis will lose…..Leftwich is BA’s prodigy.
    I doubt this is true…….Leftwich helped Jameis to over 5000 yards & 33 TDs….success in the red zone…..and yes….to 7 pick 6s & 30 ints….

  7. Pete Mitchell Says:

I don’t know know bout this.

From what I remember, there was a pretty heartfelt embrace between Byron and Jameis after the drive that put Jameis over the 5000 yard mark.

Obviously you can find times when they didn’t see eye to eye, but that’s a pretty shaky argument to me.

  8. Mr. Reality Says:

How odd, because Winston is always one who provides great deference to people of authority. He has always followed the guidance of his coaches, and the law. I mean, he has NEVER been involved in any controversy regarding following basic conduct, adhering to simple rules, laws regarding common decency and has never been in a position where he needed to be disciplined at any level. HA!!

BA and Leftwich come in an coddle a guy because he is so fragile, needs his own rules (like he gets his own stats). Of course they will get into it when thumbsucking Winston doesn’t like what he sees or gets what he wants.

But then too, JP Peterson is a piece of work himself.

  9. ou812 Says:

Everybody but Winston is responsible for his bad play???
Mabey Leftwitch and Arians don’t want to be fired like Winston’s last two head coaches!!!
No way Arians will put up with another year of this Sh!t show at QB
He is here to win now!! Remember? > No Winston = playoffs

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

Didn’t Jameis say he could relate to Leftwich better because he was black?

  11. Robert Says:

heard a lot of audibles being called in yesterdays games.

thought they, or madden would have taught crabman what an audible was.

at least now we know it wasn’t crabmans fault.

  12. Sport Says:

What component on this team is satisfied with JW’s results???

    Not Satisfied
JW himself (unless he’s using negotiating lingo ‘look at the numbers’ and ‘I’m Ballin’
    Oline
    Tight Ends
    Defense
Running Backs (because giving away the damn ball away and points forces a passing game)
    Coaches
    Owners
    Fans

    Neutral
Special Teams – did our punter even play this year? Place kicker would have had pressure regardless of QB performance.

    Satisfied
Receivers – they blew up this year.

Is that good enough to pay him record breaking dollars he is seeking?

Tough decision, but this exercise says a lot.

  13. miken Says:

@dewey… No, Jameis said he could relate better to Leftwich because Lefty was the only QB on the planet that has ever had a slower wind up delivery than himself.

  14. Mr. Reality Says:

Winston needs to be on Leftwich’s page, who needs to be on BA’s. It was a mistake for BA to delegate to Leftwich anyway, but the player gets a mere input at best. Anything new here? We’ve heard this since FUS and old Jimbo. I don’t think too many have thought on this, but I’ll offer it again:

Winston could have handed his owners, GM, and coaches a 9-7 season so the could all say they improved under Arians with a winning team first year. True or not, they could have boasted that and all come out smelling like a rose.

Instead, Winston loses the last two games on INTs, due to the same critical issue he’s had his whole career…the same issue this coaching staff was brought here to fix. Winston essentially shoved it up their…
That’s how he repays the Glazers and GM who gave him multiple chances. That’s what he really thinks of BA and Leftwich…

Winston either can’t, or won’t be fixed. Either way it can’t work. Winston needs to go.

  15. DoooshLaRue Says:

Joe was told Jameis is very much a yes-sir, no-sir, follow-orders kind of a guy.
    ________

Right. And then JayMiss does whatever he feels like doing….. cause hey, he be BALLIN’!

And yes Dewey, JayMiss did say that about his relationship with BL.
……. and that’s not racist at all!!!

  16. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

    Repost:
The people that want Winston gone should preface it with a replacement–a replacement that can hum it downfield to fit Arians scheme. You don’t get rid of your above average car and replace it with a clunker.
The ONLY way I’d get rid him is to offer Winston, OJ Howard and two #1’s to the Bengals for Joe Burrow–and I’m guessing that still wouldn’t be enough.

  17. Sport Says:

And for those who feel the running backs didn’t do their job, I get that, but a good follow up question for opposing teams (coaches)

‘Why were you stacking the box against the Bucs?’
‘We wanted to make the Bucs one dimensional, and trusted our secondary to make plays.’ Aka JW is like a loose slot machine.

  18. Hodad Says:

Just look at the picture heading this article, it says a thousand words. It looks more like an intervention then coaches, and player hashing out what just happened on the field. It looks like they’re saying how could you just throw that pick six, we talked about that all week! Jameis’s high football I.Q. is a lot like believing in Bigfoot. There’s just no proof either is true.

  19. Robert Says:

I hope they keep him, otherwise what will I ever do about this tattoo?

  20. BrianBucs Says:

When you are making bonehead plays, bad decisions and throwing interceptions and pick 6’s galore, of course the O.C. is not going to be very happy with you.
I wonder how many times this year that Winston audibled into a play where he threw a pick?

  21. AllhailJPP Says:

His outstanding football IQ..and hes the smartest qb ever coming out of college… yet, doesnt know how to avoid intentional grounding calls or that where the line is and ya cant throw it when you cross it dude…..still to this day

  22. Mr. Reality Says:

Hello: “You don’t get rid of your above average car and replace it with a clunker.”

When the car you have is a clunker…no matter what you paid, no matter how much you try…and it doesn’t work…you replace it PERIOD.

If you KNOW you have a dead battery and KNOW the car isn’t working…and you have some batteries on the shelf that MAY have some juice…then you try them. Worst case if you end up with how you are now. With NOTHING.

  23. geno711 Says:

The biggest point of this article to me:

How it was explained to Joe was there were often times a play was sent in to Jameis and when the defense broke the huddle, it was clear to the coaches the play was doomed.
But Jameis didn’t like audibling out of plays. Jameis thought the coaches knew what they wanted and combined with Jameis’ (too strong?) confidence, he always thought he could make a play work. That sometimes blew up in his face.

The comparisons to Peyton Manning are silly folks.

  24. D-Rome Says:

So if Jameis’ body language and reported shouting matches with Leftwich are true, maybe Arians and Leftwich are finally making headway with Jameis where Koetter and his staff didn’t?

35 total turnovers, seven pick-6’s say otherwise. But yeah, Jay-Miss was “ballin'”.

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

“But Jameis didn’t like audibling out of plays.”

5th Year in the league. This statement says a LOT. The QB is the coach on the field. Recognizing defensive fronts, a veteran QB should be able to change plays.

  26. Bucsfan951 Says:

Audibles… we don’t need no stinkin audibles!

But for real, how many times have we seen Winston audible out of a play? Even my wife has commented that he doesn’t change plays at the line very much or at all.

But for some fans, they say he’s worth 30+ million 🤷🏻‍♂️

  27. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Jameis is a BONEHEAD….and to make matters worse is horribly inconsistent and inaccurate throwing the football….BA & BL must be suffering GERD watching the QB’s last weekend….especially the youngsters Watson and Allen…Jameis’s cap space is more valuable to the roster next year than he is…..there !

  28. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

    Mr. Reality–

Guess our versions of your “handle” reside in metaphorically dissimilar automobile values.

  29. Mr. Reality Says:

Ineffable…sometimes one must speak to the people in a context they understand. Because the Winstonions sure don’t get basic rules of football. And…Rivers and others…are not clunkers. As Winston says…”check your sheet.”

  30. ATrain Says:

A coach wants to get cussed out by his QB hahah

Holy Cow this is insane. WWHHYYY ARE YOU DEFENDING THIS GUY

I don’t get it JUST like I didn’t get the defense of MCCoy

Which I thought the Defense would fall apart with out him But we not only for better on Defense we were #1 in run defense.

  31. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

When your QB is 32 in turnovers and 28 in completion percentage he’s the definition of a clunker

People always stupidly ask who are you going to get better than Jameis?

When he’s ranked in the bottom of key categories look up nearly every option is better.

  32. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

If you are not astute enough to see that Taysom Hill has a burning desire to WIN and Be a starting QB in the NFL , you are a 3rd rate GM. Sign Taysom Hill to a offer sheet , he is one of the fastest and strongest QB’s in the league and he can throw it.

Hey LICHT BRAIN sign Taysom Hill you FREAKING DOLT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Marine Buc Says:

Winston doesn’t audible out of any plays because he doesn’t have the ability to read a defense and make the proper call. Any other excuse is total BS.

  34. Sleepy903 Says:

Some of these responses are downright ignorant and I wonder who if any played sports at a high level rather that be actually getting on the field as a varsity player or playing in college.

This is a normal thing that happens in sports its called growth. As Joe stated JW was a yes sir no sir player and tried to make bad plays work because obviously he believed in the coaches game plan and play calling and I would assume this was early in his career so he isnt going out making vet type audibles. Fast forward to now he’s seen a lot and probably doesnt understand why BL has them running out certain plays that maybe arent proven to work. Its been more than once that BA has overruled BL and who remembers our WR tackling our RB for a loss. Eventually it probably all started to pile up.

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

    Well said my Jarhead brother!^^^

  36. 813bucboi Says:

what has JW done that has him thinking he can bark back at coaches?…..led the league in passing?….he also had 30INTs….

until JW wins a playoff game, he needs to shut his mouth…..

BL played in the league for a very time and has a SB ring……

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  37. NPRSageBoy. Says:

JayMiss’ time with the Bucs has come and gone.

Time to do what Titans did with Mariota; find a competent game manager who won’t JayMiss Special you to death and go to the playoffs and kick butt.

    Time to move on.

    Peace, out.

  38. Sleepy903 Says:

I coach and some of the players I coached found it easier to talk to my assistants compared to coming to me and some would rather come to me instead of my assistants its just who you are most comfortable with who you feel does a better job listening and understanding where you’re coming from. JW had a preexisting relationship with BA so that’s who he feels more comfortable with expressing his frustrations. Simple explanation.

Whoever believes JW doesn’t audible now is an idiot or doesn’t actually watch the games. Then the next question is how much do you want him actually changing at the line of scrimmage during his first year of a new offense. I mean the offense was top 5 in scoring and yards. Can you really audible into a run play with the backs that we currently have. Do you want him changing routes when our WR have trouble running the initial routes given anyway?

Its a lot of trust that goes into calling audibles and based on the games I watched We had Oline breakdowns, bad snaps, bad routes, players in motion at the wrong time, bad blitz pickups by RB’s and bad throws by the QB. So no he wouldnt audible as much as say Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would but he did do it some. But it happens more and more as the trust is built.

  39. Ocala Says:

No Dewey Jamies did not say that.

  40. MTM Says:

Let Winston explore the FA market. The Bucs don’t need another year of the same roller coaster ride. Mostly downward…

  41. Craig Says:

Jameis reminds me of an old Jaguar XKE I once knew. You got it out of the shop on Friday, washed it Saturday, and drove it Sunday, just to put it back in the shop on Monday, because something went wrong during the drive.

I think BA and BL have both gotten tired of re-teaching Jameis every week. He does all the right things during the week and falls apart during the game. Frustrating.

However, Licht and the Glazers still get blinded by the glittery flash of statistics and want to keep him. Our best hope is that Jameis’ agent prices him out of our market.

He might work better elsewhere, but I doubt he will ever get right here.

  42. Cobraboy Says:

Arians coddles Winston, Leftwich doesn’t, good cop/bad cop style.

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If J.P. Peterson cannot say the source, then do not believe it for a second. He claimed his source was someone who used to play QB in the NFL. USED TO.

That person would have no fear of standing behind their words. It;s J.P. Peterson making things up to get attention.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Ocala Says
“No Dewey Jamies did not say that.”

    Actually, yes he did.

  45. LaMarcus Says:

Hahaha. Yall could save your time because u think Ballin JW wants to even come back?

Why would any person come back to play in a Bucs uni? Why if you want your football dreams to turn out good. Why choose the Bucs

Then yall really we have a chance with Brady??

Yall must dont know WHO the Bucs are.

  46. Adrnagy Says:

This all Leftwich …. he wants no blame. He wants to be dad.

Be a coach. Don’t cross the line. Let the players sink or swim.

  47. Allbuccedup Says:

Teddy Bridgewater 3yrs 54 mil 36 guaranteed then draft a qb in second or third round let him sit and learn for a couple of years.

  48. ClodHopper Says:

Too many times when Jameis comes off the field it’s after a pick. Of course he’ll go to Arians first. Who’s the quarterback whisperer? Arians or Leftwich?

  49. DoooshLaRue Says:

Yes Ocala, he did. Go back and look it up.
Even his supporters got nervous. He was making the rounds with media and was showing off some of that High Football IQ, saying all kinds of dumb sh!t.

  50. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Like the sands of time, these are The Days of our Life”

I selected the opening a famous Soap Opera because that’s what JW represents.
    A freaking soap opera.

Recapping…Jimbo and Jameis had some major differences! The worst being when insolent and entitled JW already suspended for a half shows up in uni on the field anyway only to be sent back to the locker room. Then there’s the shouting match with Jimbo in the disastrous Rose Bowl Loss. And the RUMORS…I’m not an FSU grad to I certainly bow to any understanding of all this but I “read” that Jimbo was relieved to see JW leave for the draft.

Friction with Koetter! And now friction with BL?

None of these single examples are a giant deal…except for perhaps Jimbo..FSU guys are far more qualified than me to amplify that. But the total just keeps adding to the soap opera.

Last off season JW claimed that BL will be great for him because BL is black and he understands black QB’s. That prompted a day of bickering here about reverse racism. I totally understand why JW would feel this. But he totally needs to understand PR and keep his yap shut about stuff like this.

Five years of soap opera. Schizophrenia from JW…all the humility and I got to get better yadda yadda…interspersed with comments like after the final game which he LOST! 28-42. He be ballin’ alright.

JW has some serious talent and serious deficiencies. Put them all together with a 28-42 record and all the Strum and Drang….this soap opera has ceased to entertain me. I hope the Bucs do not renew this soap opera for another year.

  51. 813bucboi Says:

    stpete

    damn you’re right…..

    jimbo and JW…
    dirk and JW…
    BL and JW….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  52. Stevebobucsfan Says:

What I don’t understand is, Jameis was playing great ball until the last 2 games and then he just looked off with 50% of his throws. One NFL personnel said that his thumb was worst then thought that Jameis now has a full cast on his hand. The other thing is if Jameis beefing with Leftwich made him play the way he did before the last 2 games, hell I hope they keep beefing

  53. Stevebobucsfan Says:

For those who want Jameis gone you will get your wish if there’s any truth in the rumor of him beefing with Leftwich. I am sure that with the success that Arians had this year with the Bucs , he’s not gonna let Jameis spoil that therefore Jameis will be gone. But you know the media can be a bit.. with rumors

  54. Cobraboy Says:

St. Pete, excellent analysis of Winston’s history of butting heads with coaches.

@Stevebobbucsfan: in fairness to Winston, he had a cracked thumb (thumb metacarpal, a difficult bone to heal?) since the Colts game.

  55. Bob in Valrico Says:

BL probably told Jameis he wouldn’t be getting any 30 million contract with his
play. Thats the kind of communication he needs,IMO

  56. MTM Says:

St Pete Buc- made some great points. It also plays into why Winston fails to improve. Winston has become great at telling fans and coaches what hey want to hear but not buying into it actually himself. I’ve said they needed to punt on him for years now.

  57. jjbucfan Says:

Soooooo, nobody gives Jameis credit for the success of the team this year? 7-9 from 5-11 and should have been 9-7 if Gay just hits his kicks, something that has plagued this team for decades. That is with throwing 30 INTs, well would have been 29 (which is still ridiculous) if Gay hits his kicks. You idiots give me a headache. Any other QB back there is 2-14. JW has 2 WRs to throw to. We have no running game, Arians doesn’t use TE’s, doesn’t throw to RBs out of the backfield because he needs to keep them in to block because we have a sieve of an offensive line, so he literally has 2 targets and defenses still couldn’t stop them.

  58. Dapostman Says:

Winston’s first mistake was believing coaches know what they are doing. Winston needs to take the reigns and move this team forward. Coaches don’t win games players do.

  59. Stanglassman Says:

I read this article twice because I thought I missed the story. But there was none. Pure speculation and with nothing at all. Another ‘NFL Qb’ noticed Jameis was talking to the head coach when he came off the field? Is that bad? I’ve seen him do both in recent games go straight to Leftwich and BA. It just what side of field he is coming off from or what coach comes out to speak with him. Usually when it’s good result Leftwitch comes over and if something bad happens it’s BA. The TV just spends more time following him when it a poor result.

You did get the crazy Jameis haters foaming at the mouth with this one though. J.P. should be ashamed of himself. Not only publicly saying he wants Jameis gone but trying to make crap up to push him out. Just crap journalism.

  60. stpetebucsfan Says:

    OK

Let me simplify things for JW supporters. This is why you’re having difficulty selling us. If you’re honest and read the responses there is ONE word that sticks out in the vast majority.

    IF

Alibi Ike needs a lot of IFs Buts and wait till next year.

  61. Stanglassman Says:

    Like
IF the Bucs had a running game.
IF the Bucs had the defense that played the last 6 games all year.
IF the Bucs had a better OL.
IF the Bucs didn’t lead the league in pre-snap penalties.

All these things are true and starting over at Qb only sets this team back. Jameis should and will get another year in this system.

  62. jjbucfan Says:

Stan- wait until JW “Balls out” next year and with the new collective bargaining will be a 40 mill./year QB- better lock him up for 3-5 now on the cheap. Of course with team options and outs. If he gets 5 year deal- when that expires he will be 31 years old- it is mind boggling. BTW, everyone all over Lamar Jacksons jock (and deservedly so) need to remember Robert Griffin’s career- just sayin’.

  63. Stanglassman Says:

St Pete. Your condescension and passive aggressiveness on this subject irks me more than the ‘fans’ who want Jameis gone purely cause his skin color. You know a ‘real’ Qb, make it great again and all.

We all get it you never really liked Jameis and wanted Mariota. You should put your personal feelings aside and get onboard with bringing Jameis back for at least one more season.

  64. Defense Rules Says:

StPete … Excellent points about Jameis’ relationships with Jimbo, Dirk & now Byron. But you left out Joe, and an ex-Bucs Concessions Manager told me that Joe’s hurt . Jameis & Joe never had any beefs. Always on the same page. Joe’s good with Jameis as our Savior. And Jameis has always been very accommodating and entertaining.

Joe was concerned for awhile that Devin was gonna usurp the Savior moniker, but unless Devin wins NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year this year then 1st Team All-Pro for the next 3 years he can’t be called The Savior. That handle belongs to Jameis, who’s saved us once again from, oh yes, the playoffs.

  65. Stanglassman Says:

JJ- I’m with you on that. I think it’s gonna be a lockout and who knows how it ends up but either way it would be better to lock him in to a muti year deal now. On the other hand I can see their reservations too if they really believe the turnover issue is on him and can’t be easily solved. Either way he should get a least one more year with BA in this system to prove himself.

  66. SteveK Says:

    Hey StanGlassMan,

You list four or five “if’s” for what parts of a team could help Jameis. And I beg to question, could the QB’s play: consistency help achieve greatness for the rest of the team?

  67. adam from ny Says:

if brady was qb do you think leftwich would coach him up?…

    or might tom say:

    “byron go grab some gatorade”

  68. RustyRhinos Says:

Do wins and losses have colors?

  69. Stanglassman Says:

    SteveK.
Yes the turnovers need to go down next season regardless who’s fault they may have been. History shows that 1st year Qbs in BAs offense throw a bunch of picks and it goes down the 2nd year. I don’t expect Jameis to become the exception.

  70. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Stanglass

Certainly accept your points except for the one about me preferring Mariota.

I do understand your description of me being passive/aggressive about JW.

I’m sure most JW supporters feel that because just like JW…I’ve been inconsistent in my criticism. I’ve tried jumping on the bandwagon last off season for the umpteenth time..I’ve been on and off that’s for sure..the final game tore it for me…not just the pick six but the brain dead remarks after the game that BA described as leaving a long lasting stink. My nut sack still aches from that kick in the nutsack with the pick six to ensure we’d be losers yet again. Can’t even get to .500. Those remarks simply confirmed my earliest fears about JW’s thought process.

During the draft debate I leaned towards JW talent wise over MM. However I was very concerned if we picked him we’d end up with a suspension for off field behavior somewhere down the line. It took all of one freaking season. I say this not to say I told you so but to defend my own mistake…I was WRONG.

Sooo recapping…I was onboard for JW’s talent but very queasy about his character issues. 87 and others pointed out it was just immaturity. I accepted that and I was FOR drafting JW not MM. I now concede I was mistaken…not about JW being more talented than MM…it was always personality issues. In fact I was leaning far more to trading for a boatload of picks not MM but Joe and everybody here convinced me of the need for a “franchise” QB.

To all JW supporters angry with my criticism and bailing on JW and who view me as passive-aggressive…I get it. I honestly WANTED JW to succeed both as a Buc’ fan and JW is a great con man. I wanted HIM to recover his rep on and off the field. I HAVE been on and off JW’s bandwagon the past five years.

We spent the freaking max on JW….the most draft capital…the #1 pick in the entire draft…close to 50 MILLION $$$…overlooked his incredibly damaging immaturity waiting for him to grow up…remember when he was ready to physically assault a referee only to be restrained…when he attacked the DB and ultimately got ME suspended…the embarrassment of eating W’s that we had to overlook and on and on an on.

If people were honest they’d realize that he had the LARGEST hand in getting Koetter fired and absolutely torpedoing our ’18 season with that three game suspension.

OK I’m done…sorry JW supporters…I’ve just had ENOUGH!!!!!

    Stanglassman,

Other than history of how another player played in Arians offense , is there any other reasons why you believe winston can reduce his turnovers?

  72. Old School Athlete Says:

Jameis used to scream at his coaches at Florida State. Saw it with my own eyes. No one should be surprised by this. As for the friction, if you were an OC and your QB single-handedly lost you 5 games, wouldn’t you have friction with him too?

  73. Buc1987 Says:

Same old fools that never get tired of repeating themselves, with the SOS.

What is the JBF comment section Alex?

  74. Stanglassman Says:

St. Pete I remember spring 2015 debate well and your position on JW vs MM. I would respect you more if you just admitted the fact they you never liked JW because of the accusations in college. The facts show that Jameis has matured and become a great community guy even if you refuse to see it. The fact that you have to go back to incidents that happened 3-4 years ago confirms his growth.

With post interview vs ATL. Jameis was asked if he thought he’d be back as a buccaneer. He answered he didn’t know it wasn’t in Gods hands and that he’d love to be back in TB. Went on to say I know I’ll fix the issues (turnovers) and and is going to ball in the future. This commit and BA statement had nothing to do with each other. BA interview was before Jameis’s so it couldn’t have been. BA was only referring to losing the last game of the season that they should have won. If anything he was referring to all the missed Fgs because he had just talked about finding another way to spot the other team 10 points.

The Bucs started off 2-1 in 2018 beating the defending Champs (Eagles) and Saints. How is that torpedoing the season? Koetter screwed that up by cuddling DJax instead of cutting him lose and not starting Jameis as soon as he returned.

  75. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

As bad as Jameis was this year, I believe just as much blame goes to Leftwich. Don’t be fooled by the yards, or even the points. Look deeper and you will find an incredibly inconsistent and inefficient offense. Football Outsiders DVOA measures the success of every play and takes into account the strength of Defense as well. Under Koetter, we were 12th overall and 9th in passing. This year under Leftwich, we were 21st overall and 18th in passing. Atrocious. Even just watching the games you could see the playcalling was below average. How many 1st and 2nd downs did Leftwich call the ineffective HB dive? Where was the creativity or innovation? If we didn’t have 2 of the best WR in the game, we would have been pathetic. Jameis might be salvageable, but Leftwich is TERRIBLE and has to go.

  76. Stanglassman Says:

D1- First off if the team is better Jameis won’t fell like he has to take as many chances with the ball to win. Him being healthy, 10 of those turnovers came after his thumb injury if you include the game he got the injury. I think an improved OL play will help. OL run blocking and better pass blocking. Eliminating presnap penalties will help. Hopefully they can get better production out of the run game. Drafting a Zach Moss would be my choice. I think this will also help Leftwich to call a better more balanced game. If the defense can be maintained and starts off well will help too. Jameis will know he doesn’t have to score on every drive and punting is better than taking a chance with the ball. Better special teams and confidence in the kicking game. Hopefully the whole team including the WRs in the 2nd year in the system should help too.

This maybe a side point but I just rewatch the ATL overtime pick6 and you can clearly see the the ball got tipped by the pass rusher. The pass was thrown further to the right and would have had a lot more velocity had it not gotten tipped. Dodson let his guy shove him back right into Jameis and didn’t keep him from getting his hands up to bat the pass. Maybe it was a bad call by Leftwich to begin with and Jameis could have just thrown the ball away.

  77. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Stangglass

Accept all your points we just disagree. Yeah no doubt I was very nervous about JW’s FSU hijinks. It was just another spoiled rotten athlete who had been coddled since grade school for his superior athletic ability. And if you recall I defended JW against the racist remarks like thug. Folks convinced me he was just immature so I jumped on the bandwagon.

JW turned in an excellent rookie season and I was all the way on the ‘wagon.

Then AZ the suspension and the LYING to the Bucs knocked me off the franchise.

As you correctly point out he’s been a model citizen for the past few so I edged back to bandwagon…only to get knocked off again by this season.

Five years…numerous coaches…and record setting int’s even by JW’s standards. I’m just worn out. There are simply too many other QB’s without the nonsense. JW is an incredibly polarizing athlete and has been for his entire career college and pro. I believe much of this is his own fault.

Sorry for condescension that’s never my intention.

  78. stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW LMAO I’m collecting the insults. So far I’m “weak minded” “clueless” and now I can add “old fool”.

Cmon you guys…NDOG is doing all the heavy lifting…Stangglass you were far too civil. Others are welcome to unload I enjoy the insults.

I like to believe I’m pretty good at self deprecation but admittedly some of you guys come up with better insults for me than I do myself. Poor creativity on my part.

  79. DBS Says:

St Pete. You don’t have to apologize to anyone for how you feel or your opinions. And especially to someone who wants you to say or tell you what to say. And he throws out the race card ? F him

  80. Doug Says:

    Trade for nick Mullen’s

  81. donuts Says:

Winston is not a pro and he never was. He had these behavior issues in college when he didnt listen to Jimbo at FSU to the point he was not welcomed back. He was booted from the baseball team. I always lmao when I hear he could go pro in baseball. Another myth. I see Stan has gone to the race argument; RB, DEF, thumb injury, glasses, his diaper was full. How about a QB that doesnt turn it over in the first Q putting the DEF on the field too much so their gassed in the 4Q? We are talking about his skill set and mental aptitude to be a franchise QB and you bring out nonsense about race. I couldnt care if Winston was purple with pink polka dots as long as he can play QB consistently at a high level unlike the 2-3 game spurts Winston has annually. He has peaked and he is not going to change ever as we all have seen the past 5 years. Whats different in his play from 2015 to now? These reports of yelling matches with his OC are just more signals that he doesnt have what it takes at the NFL level. He cant live on arm talent alone cuz the NFL defenses adapt so quick as seen by the 19 INTs in the last 8 games. I am confident Arians will pull the trigger just like he did in AZ and get his type of QB in here as it seems vet talent will be abundant this off season.

  82. Losing hope Says:

    Screw jaymiss and his feelings

  83. Rodney Munch Says:

I think it’s super obvious that Leftwich is a lot more conservative at play calling than Arians is – and wants to do what Dirk would do and sit on a 3 point lead like he has the 2002 Bucs defense. Remember the multiple times early in the year where Arians said he had to tell Leftwich to stop shutting down the offense?

Now with that said I think Leftwich opened up and got more into the flow of things as the year went along.

In any case Leftwich, as a pro-QB, was a pretty dull and boring guy who played on teams with good defenses. He was, at best, a game manager and I think if he had his say, 100%, he’d have a game manager as a QB. That obviously isn’t Winston. It is Mike Glennon however, so if/when Leftwich ever gets a HC job for running Arians offense, look for him to get a boring QB and run an offense that puts up 12 points a game – which is pretty much what the dullards on this message board want.

  84. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

REPEAT: What is best for BUCS, JW-haters and JW, is for Bucs to release JW

    -Bucs
    – Sign Dalton or Brady if possible
    – See if less TO’s can change winning %
    – Sign RB in 2nd or 3rd round of draft
    – Add OL help in FA or draft

    – the haters will witness in 2020
    — Still no playoff option, and more losses than this year (6-10)
    — ME13 and Godwin both get under 1000 yds each – and unhappy
    — maybe a better running game via draft
    — Expect a top 10 D….
    — Less turnovers for sure
    — Not enough “splash plays” or points … to win!
    — Middle of pack in points scored – lots of Matt Gay FG’s = Wooo

    JW
    — Where he lands outside of bucs, anybody’s guess
    — Maturity will set in with change of scenery, be it holding clip board or other
    — Someone will give him a chance – he is a 26 yr old QB, 1of 8 in history to
throw for 5K yds. 30 INTS – is why he will carry clipboard for a while
    — He will learn by watching – maybe in NE, watching Brady, or Pitt, watching Roth

    Wildcard in all these scenarios???
    – is Bruce negotiating w/Winston agent via media?
    – is Bruce blackballing Winston, for better contract negotiation? There is a cap, and
    lot of D-talent to sign
    – Bruce is DONE with Winston Turnovers? Ready to move on…
    – Winston does not want to return? wants to test market?
    – not his choice….if he is franchised.

Rumors are planted by all parties …..with a planned outcome….

Going to be a wild 3 months, Bucs Fans….

    Popcorn time…

  85. Ed Says:

Instead of re-signing Jameis, pay that money to Teddy Bridgewater as starter and sign Tayson Hill as backup. Give Hill more reps than the Saints did because he is a better runner than either Jones or Barber and he is terrific with direct snap, read/option.

Bridgewater is your starter but Hill is a backup that will get to play because of Bridgewater’s history. Hill is a rising star in the NFL, no doubt, you can’t deny that athletic quarterbacks are tearing it up now in the league and above all, they are winning games with the timely scrambles when there is nowhere to throw the ball. Russell Wilson and DeShaun Watson were the difference in the Wild Card games with deadly ad-lib runs on 3rd downs when all the receivers were covered.

$20,000,000 to Bridgewater, $10,000,000 to Hill with bonuses for every game he gets more than 10 snaps. Sign Teddy short term to work with Hill and coach him up to be future starter.

  86. JameisAlmighty! Says:

Left which is the reason for the INTs. Fire Byron Sandwhich and get a real OC to drive the Jameis Ferrari. And for all you Bridgewater fans.. y’all are just dumb.

  87. DalvinCookRules Says:

If this is true, it is music to my ears. I was maybe one of the first persons to suggest that Leftwich’s playcalling maximizes the riskiness of throws in general–with the defense often knowing what is coming and just being dared to stop it… NOT the best idea when you have an innately risk-prone QB like Winston.

This just tells me that Winston is seasoned enough to see when he is being thwon into a fire. I’ve said since midseason it is a bad marriage between BL and JW without knowing about any of the shouting stuff.

  88. Ryan Says:

    Stoops is going to FSU!

  89. July Joe Says:

    FAKE NEWS

Leftwich LOVES Jameis, you can hear it in his voice everytime he talks about Jameis, and Jameis LOVES Leftwich. Jameis and Jimbo used to scream at each other all the time and they always loved each other and still do.

    This is a GREAT SIGN!

  90. July Joe Says:

That JP Peterson show was a good one.

Greg Auman was on for a nice segment and Jameis 1of1 was on and just slapped JP around with stats before JP conceded and called him the king of stats, that made me laugh as JP doesn’t usually get owned in debates on his own show.

One of the call-ins was really good to!

  91. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    DoooshLaRue Says
“Yes Ocala, he did. Go back and look it up.
Even his supporters got nervous. He was making the rounds with media and was showing off some of that High Football IQ, saying all kinds of dumb sh!t.”

    That’s a misleading description.

Jameis was asked if Leftwich being African-American helped, and he said it did and that along with Leftwich having played in the league as a black man helped them relate.

    Nice try.

  92. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bridewater is a half-season-wonder.

    Stay away.
