Now this is really lazy analysis.
Joe began reading this and thought he was in a time warp, like waking up this morning and it was October 2019, not January 2020.
It seems this Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report not only has not watched Bucs games since Thanksgiving, he hasn’t dared do a flip of research to confirm what he is writing is remotely true.
Davenport wrote about the biggest disappointments for each team. And for the Bucs, Davenport typed that the corners let the team down.
The cornerback spots have been a revolving door in Tampa for some time. And while young players like Sean Murphy-Bunting and Carlton Davis have shown occasional flashes, for every good play made, there’s a buster coverage that leads to a long gain.
Just as the lack of a pass rush will lead to defenses being picked apart, a formidable cadre of edge-rushers isn’t much good if opposing teams can simply target weak links on the back end.
The Buccaneers found that out the hard way again in 2019.
Hell, disappointment? The Bucs are giddy how the cornerbacks turned out.
Now again, if Davenport wrote this in October, he would be on to something. The Bucs corners were dreadful in the first eight games. SOS — and that doesn’t mean “save our ship,” though that would have applied as well.
But right around the time the Bucs bounced Vernon Hargreaves for loafing, among other things, the Bucs defense quickly turned things around in the secondary, specifically the corners.
Jamel Dean began to stick to receivers. Carlton Davis became a strong defender and Sean Murphy-Bunting just made plays.
Man, this is bad. Joe would almost expect something this silly from the PFF tribe and their dumb grades, but not from Bleacher Report.
This is pretty sad if not embarrassing.

And you why John Lynch, Ronde Barber and Simeon Rice aren’t in the Hall of Fame? I’ve been beating this drum for years. Sports writers and voters just won’t admit they don’t watch small market teams. This really has to be addressed on a national level. They need to be called out.

TT totally agree but at the same time have we given anyone a reason to watch us small market or not. We might get better recognition if we for the most part didn’t beat ourselves or maybe we don’t. Gotta day I don’t really care what media says about our team. I’m seeing great improvement in our secondary from our young guys. Hopefully we can get Davis to cut down on penalties an the rest of the crew to play a little more consistent which will happen with more playing time an development. Really like what I’m seeing

i am starting to think these national media guys less than half of them actually watch tape and the games. it is ridiculous how people are so opinionated (and on jameis) yet only watch highlights. at least us fans can have a fair opinion on this team and jameis since we actually watch the entires games and not just the stupid highlights on redzone.

i mean voice of dissent here, but their youth and inexperience did give up plays in blown coverage, even in week 17.
They may have looked promising, but blown coverages leading to long touchdowns, even after great coverage plays, was a theme for most of the year.

Sounds to me like he googled passing yards given up for the year and that was his research.

A huge part to our passing defense that never gets talked about is our LBs. For the longest time we have been getting shredded by TEs and receivers over the middle. Devin White has shown good coverage skills and it’s even seemed to help David get better at it.
We have taken away TEs from exploiting our defense & it has been a huge part to our success.

This is the very reason I only follow Joe Bucs Fan and Buccaneers.com. If they were paying attention they would have noticed that our young corner’s really played lites out the last 7 games and if they would have caught all the dropped interceptions these outlets would have been forced to take notice.

I know everyone just wants to believe Arains but this secondary got worked by the Lions, Cardinals and the Colts along with giving up some very important plays against the Falcons in week 17. I’m not convinced yet be we all know who’s fault this really is.

I am still all in for drafting Delpit, if he is available at spot 14. He would complete the defense and Bowles needs someone with his range.
After that the needs need to be met. A QB, RB and O-line, not necessarily in that order.
It was lazy to say coverage was spotty. The back field rose to second in the NFL and only played half the season. Next year could be awesome, if we can win the turnover battle.

Both squirrels and lions aren’t watching small market teams period. They just hear what other people say and repeat it. Lynch, Barber and Rice played in a winning golden era for this team. Yet HOF voters still call Ronde a “system” corner. Lazy and stupid argument that proves they didn’t watch our games! The mainstream sports media is only concerned about the NFC East and a few outliers. Not a ranking of Bleacher Report, just all sports media in general.

Agree with all here that this guy blew it big time on what MIGHT be the most promising trio of young DB’s in the league.
Sometimes our own posters are just as guilty. Don’t remember who posted it yesterday but they thought White was a horrible pick! He did add…ok so he won a rookie of the month award what else has he done.
UH….that’s actually back to back…as in TWO rookie of the month awards. And all this after a knee injury interrupted the early part of his season. Only 13 games played and he was a tackling machine. Allen doesn’t have a fraction as many. OK Allen is a DE/LB and doesn’t get the same opportunities.
Same is true in reverse however for sacks…that is the ONLY THING Allen has to offer. A DE edge rusher SHOULD get more sacks that an MLB. How many TD’s and forced fumbles? Again White the clear winner.
It just blows my mind that somebody would still be casting aspersions White’s way.

The PFF tribe gave solid grades to all 3 corners for the season. Considering how bad the start was you can only imagine how highly they graded the last few months.
Dean & SMB both were individual players of the week at various points, with complete lock down performances where they literally gave up 0 completions and had multiple passes defended and an INT.
Davis absolutely locked down DeAndre Hopkins in week 16.
And when Matt Ryan targeted Julio Jones these last 2 months he was just 12/23 for 146 yards. Last year it was 19/27 for 282 yards and a TD. Pretty much cut that in 1/2.

Winston againt int at bucs 10 yard line. bucs d holds them to 0 points.
bucs d holds them to 27 points. would like to see a little better considering a 2 winston int inside of their own 20 yard line.
week 14/colts: winston int at bucs 35 yard line. colts td
winston pick 6
winston int at bucs 14 yard line. bucs d hold to 0 points.
bucs d holds colts to 35 points but 1 pick 6, 1 int at bucs 35 and 1 int at bucs 14 leads to 14 points off turnovers.
week 15/lions: winston with a pic (no really another one) but at lions 43 and no points scored.
bucs d holds lions to 17 points.
so again, is the bucs defense top notch? nope!
but they held the cards to 27 points(3 off of winston turnovers), lions to 17 points, and colts to 28 actual points (minus 14 points due to winston turnovers) despite 3 winston turnovers

Dumb reporting. Maybe he didn’t realize that Davis and Dean both allowed less than 50% completions against them and were both in top 4 in league in pass breakups. Or that SMB led all rookies in INTs. This is negligent reporting and should be expressed to the publication’s editor. Who wants to do the deed? This is not a matter of opinion, this is just lazy and stupid writing.

Yet another clueless writer from up North (Ohio). I read bleacher report at least 3 times a week , but I may have to stop due some of their writers (Matt Miller being the other) showing bias towards the Bucs or just plain incompetence. Thank goodness for JBF. 😛

That’s an incredible story! I agree that the Bucs should draft more players like Cappa, but he was drafted in the third round in 2018 and developed for a full season. Do the Bucs have the luxury to wait for mid to high-round players to develop for an entire season or two before they begin to contribute? The team has immediate needs in so many areas.

Lazy reporting, through and through. After all, we DID have a tremendous pass rush and our defense rose to the challenge, more and more as the season progressed. I loved watching all the sacks this season–and the pass breakups, too. It was nice, for a change, to have some entertainment on the defensive side of things.
