Ian Rapoport: Winston Is Expected To Be Back

NFL Network insider reporter Ian Rapoport, a guy who will tell you he’s friendly with Bruce Arians, has yet again said America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is expected to wear pewter and red next season.
As Joe wrote, “again.“
On Monday, Rapoport was unwavering during his chat on WDAE radio following Jameis and the Bucs losing to the Falcons.
“From what I understand, Winston is expected to be back. I know [the Bucs] haven’t come out and said it. From everything I’ve been told, that has not changed,” Rapoport said, adding ,”I would be extremely surprised if the if the Bucs move on from Jameis.”
Rapoport even added that a multiyear probably benefits the Bucs, rather than Jameis going out and playing well next season on, for example, the franchise tag that would pay him about $27 million in 2020.
It’s all very interesting and entertaining. Decision Jameis likely won’t end anytime soon.
Bucs players were allocated 10 minutes each with Arians this week, private exit chats before the players leaving for winter vacation. Joe wonders what Arians told Jameis in that meeting?
Joe’s guessing Arians gave a political answer and told Jameis he wants him back but it’s not his call.

I’m not a Winston hater at all, but I’m kinda disappointed by this. Especially if it were a multi year deal. Arians was 100% right when he said we can win with a different QB. And bringing back winston means we’re gonna have to hedge our bets by using a 2nd or 3rd on a QB anyway while winston eats up major cap.

Maybe this whole thing was enough to shake Jameis up and have him do something positive in the off-season.
I would still draft another QB in the mid rounds of the draft and do a legit competition during training camp. I say this because jameis will probably come back as rusty as he always has and sticking with him during a 1-4 start will empty the stadium.
Just re-signing him will drop another 10k season tickets off the roles.

I would like to see what Jameis can do in year 2 of this system. The defense will be good and I bet they upgrade the Running game. Winston will have every opportunity to get us a winning record……..He will have to show consistency if we gonna do anymore then that. That’s the big question.

How does a multiyear deal benefit the Bucs with America’s Inconsistent QB who is also America’s Turnover Machine, Jay Miss? We simply can’t allocate too much cap space to a player going into his 6th year as we wait for the lightbulb to magically come on. However, that light is never going to illuminate for this guy.

Nothing new here. The media does what they do. He has a 50% chance of getting it right. I have always hated reporters that pretend to be non chalant in asking questions. They try to bait you into an answer, and the worst is as upi try wrap it up, they try to get at least something so they ask “so then you would say….?”
I “expect” him to be back too, but not at $27M franchise tag and certainly not in a multi-year. A contract like that would have to have so many clauses we’d have a contract dispute before next season is over. Another MRSA, Freeman meltdown, Uber ride, or similar debacle to make the Bucs look bad nationally again. But of course, we all know Licht has done some real head-scratchers.

It’s all about ALTERNATIVES and about the MONEY. If the Bucs’ management thinks for a second that they can get a better, more consistent QB for less money then guess what … bye bye Jameis. However, at this point no one knows, not even BA & JL.
Jameis has got a lot of positives working for him, and he’s got a number of negatives working just as hard against him. ‘Insiders’ like Rapoport can say whatever they want, but it’s still just THEIR OPINION. BA has told us that the decision hasn’t been made & won’t be made until after their evaluation is complete. That makes perfect sense to me. I’ll stick with what BA said.

Winston’s throws are picked at a rate more than double the nfl average. He had more turnovers than touchdowns.
The most pick 6’s in a season.
His play is a liability and it should not be rewarded with a sixth year.

As an alternative to the decision is not made, it may be that there’s no consensus among the parties involved. BA I have to believe has decided upon the initial question of whether he wants to move forward with winston.
This, if true, shifts the process into an entirely different perspective.

I want be disappointed if Jameis is back next season. If you want to talk disappointment. You should have watched the Bucs from 1976 until now. Leeman Bennett,Richard Williamson, R Perkins ,multiple bad picks year after year. We have a head coach with some accountability and team that easily could’ve been 10 & 6 if not for a missed field and some bad defense at the beginning of the year. How would you like to be a Lions, Redskin or Brown fan. I am pretty sure the Bucs are gonna have a replace plan in place if Jameis falters

I know this somewhat puts you on the spot JimmyJack, but a lot of others seem to be ASSUMING the same thing. What’s your rationale for saying that the defense will be good? As it stands right now, ours is very shaky IMO. JPP, Suh, Allen, Nachos, Barrett, Nassib, Adams, Minter, Acho, Ryan Smith, D Stewart … 11 UFAs. We’ll probably carry 25 defenders (7 DLine, 8 LBs, 5 CBs, 5 Safeties) so that’s almost HALF of our 2019 defense, and half of them were starters.
How many will we re-sign? How much will that cost? How many will be replaced by other FAs? Will they be as good as what we had at the end of the season or as bad as what we started the season with?
Same thing with the RBs though. Right now the only RB we’ve got under contract is RoJo. Barber, Dare & Logan are all UFAs. Who do we re-sign & for how much? Do we sign an experienced RB or do we draft one? If we draft one, in which round? How do we simultaneously upgrade the OLine (to include improving our depth) to ensure that our run blocking is better next year? As much as I pick on Jason Licht, I don’t envy the challenge he’s got in front of him.

If the Bucs do make the mistake of bringing Winston back, it will just be a repeat of this year and only delay the inevitable. Getting tired of seeing Winston give games away despite other players playing well. Bucs opponents scored 117 points off of Winston’s turnovers. That’s just too much for the team to overcome. When you are continuing to give the ball away and throwing pick 6’s and consistently costing your team games then throwing for over 5000 yards means absolutely nothing.
If the Bucs do make the mistake of bringing Winston back, the vast majority of the fan base will have a mutiny and jump ship, and Ray Jay will be 1/4 full.
If the Bucs do make the mistake of bringing Winston back, then they need to sign a couple of running backs that know how to tackle.

OK a qb who literally gave up at least 100 points combining pick sixes and interceptions that led to fg’s is getting another shot in his sixth year? What if he comes back and throws 2-3 picks in his first 3 games. Then what? Are they going to stick with him because of the financial investment or are they going to have a backup in the “pen’ that can salvage the season. Just the thought of having to go to a backup is absolutely nuts. To get a decent backup you’re going to pay at least 10 million. So if you add up Winston’s franchise tag price of 25 a backup at 10 then factor in all the free agents thy absolutely have to sign on defense I just don’t see it working. i have one question for the bring back Winston crowd. Do you really (confidently) believe that they can cut his picks in half next year? And what if they can’t another wasted season with a really strong front seven and decent db’s that came on strong at the end of the season and rank 15 in overall defense.

And any prudent coach would be smart to do a thorough evaluation and keep his options open IMO. You never know what might be hiding behind Doors B or C.

i definitely see them signing Barrett, JPP, and they’ll make a strong push on Suh. Not sure about Nassib. I believe Nelson could make up for Nassib’s production. I’d like to see them sign Ha Ha Clinton Dix to shore up the safety position, draft an interior lineman with Suh serving as the bridge next year. Really believe with Bowles tutelage this could be a top 10 d. I was scanning Cards defensive stats when Bowles was there and they were getting similar production from LBs (sacks) and DB’s (passes defended) in the year prior to the 13-3 season.

No doubt Jameis can do some incredible things when he’s on, but geez can he do some really stupid things too! I’ve come to realize I’m holding my breath every time he goes back to throw wondering which end zone whoever catches it will be heading towards.
Most likely Arians will bring him back. I like the No Risk It No Biscuit approach, but there’s good risk and bad risk, Jameis seems to find the later more than the former.
I’m a big fan of Georgia’s QB Fromm and would like to see the Bucs take him in the second round if he’s still there. The kid’s mental makeup is rated exceptional, he studies and knows the game very well, is excellent at leading receivers open, has a quick release and is VERY accurate. Average arm strength, but so what if he’s accurate and knows where to go with the ball?
I don’t know what’s going to happen since I don’t have 2020 vision, but here’s a little California dreamin’ for the New Year:
Take RB Dobbins, Etienne or Harris in the first round, then draft Fromm in the second round instead of resigning JW. Save the cap space and resign Barrett, Suh and JPP.

Stevebobucsfan….NEITHER Winston nor Gay did their jobs. Period. And there are plenty of times others do their jobs and Winston didn’t do his. And vice versa.
These are professionals. And one of them is the first overall pick who is frankly showing he deserves to be a backup. The other is a rookie who won’t last long if doesn’t improve. Winston is well past wearing out his newbiness.

Wow, lots of opinions here. From everything I have read, both going into the year, and throughout, year 1 in this offense is going to create turnovers. Jameis is a very “giving” fellow, but would expect the picks at least to drop by about 40%. If you take what Arians says to heart, then at least that many of the turnovers were on people not named Jameis. There are only 7 other people in the last 100 years that have thrown for 5k yards. That is pretty rare company. And even if we lose 1/2 of the free agents on defense, we will have enough left to only suck a little bit. That is good for 3 games right there. On the off chance that Gay can find the south goal posts, that is another 3 games. Not sure why everyone is up in arms. Jameis is far from perfect, but the dude can make throws that most pro quarterbacks only wish they could. 2019 did not end the way any of us wanted, but, barring Licht doing something ridiculous in the off season, the core is already here to make the playoffs. And lest we forget, the last 3 games were without Whitehead, Evans and Godwin. Folks, we will be above 11 wins next year (assuming we keep JW)

Defense rules good questions. I believe the defense will be good cause we bring back the same players(mostly) as far as starters. Bring back Shaq, JPP & Suh. Nassib may be tough to keep around once money gets tight. If we draft an OLB we should be able to fill Nassibs rotional position with both Nelson & rookie.
For RB I’d let Barber go get his money elsewhere. Dare fill the same role & I would draft a new RB……Maybe as high as Round 1 is they see a real playmaker.
OL has to be addressed in the draft. How high depends on if Dotson is retiring. But need to draft depth minimum.
I don’t got names of draft prospects cause I don’t follow college.
The depth players you named don’t seem like a huge issue. There’s always plenty of depth players on the open market that won’t demand huge salaries. Sure I like guys like Minter and Ryan Smith & Adams but their might be somebody avialable the team likes better……And let’s be honest. How much does the average Buc fan know about backup role player from outside the organization?

Also I’m not gonna rule out lower end free agents we bring in. Guys who got something to proove will see what this team did for Barrett and Perriman and the Bucs will be an attractive team to play for. Don’t be shocked if we find another free agent gem or two. Bruce did the same thing in Arizona.

He’s never ran a vertical offense he’s never been asked to and he never will be asked to. Just use your brain……..Do you really think they are going to throw their entire offensive system into the toilet so they can get Bridgewater? Every other player on our offense just spent the entire year learning and developing into that system. Do you really think they are going to throw away a entire year of learning and development away.
It’s an irrational idea that will never happen. Never. You may as well ask Bruce to draft a full back and another pass catching TE.
Understand if you want a new QB but come up with a option that makes actual cents. Phillip Rivers, Carr, heck even Dalton are better fits then Bridgewater.

It is not just a Litch/Arians decision. The Glazers know very well the majority of Buc Fans are fed up with Winston and could see a drastic “TEAM” improvement this year at many positions. There is also a BUTTS IN THE SEATS factor and in my opinion, that will be the deciding factor.
The Glazers will tell Litch to offer a very team friendly contract that has an out, and go get another QB.
If it were up to me, I would trade the Jags a 4th for Minshew, and draft a QB, OT and DL in Rounds 1-3

Get this straight I”m a Bucs fan not a Winston fan. Players come and go, fans typically don’t. IF he’s back I’ll support Winston as a fan of the team but I’m concerned that because of this year’s regression things won’t be much better next year. Can’t afford to have another 25 plus picks from your QB. The window for a championship really begins next year and may be open for a another 2-3. I haven’t seen any proof thus far that Winston can play consistent “playoff” caliber football. This whole “rah rah Jameis” stuff is ridiculous if it doesn’t lead to wins.

No surprise here. We..most Buc fans who truly follow the nuances of this team think Jameis will be back. I still think the Bucs would be wise to go after Bridges though. He is steady and much less mistake prone than Jameis. We’ve had 5 yrs of Jameis sayin, I got to improve..I will improve. He was the direct cause of 2 losses this season. Some even say 4…Your call. All I can say is fortify our Defense and make it the Buc Defense of Old which won us a superbowl. We are gonna need every ounce of it with Mr. Jameis. He has not improved his turnovers in 5 yrs. Why..do you think he will suddenly change. He can’t.

If Jameis played his games with the Vikings and Saints his winning percentage wouldn’t be higher? Noodle arm is not coming to the Bucs as long as BA is coach, there is a zero percent chance.

Picks lose games by giving away points and at the same time taking away potential points. It changes the momentum of the game and wears out our defense in the process. Makes the other team more confident while robbing our confidence. It’s freakin embarrassing when it happens multiple times during a game.

I don’t understand the hate for Winston or the all out love. I wonder if there are any fans out there like me…in the middle. 32 TD 30 picks. The way I feel about him is pretty balanced. Some that hate Winston are acting like he is Vinny T or something. Those that love him are always coming up with excuses for his poor plays. Bottom line is he ain’t terrible, and he ain’t great. There are without question better QBs starting in this league just as there are worse QB starting in this league. If you can’t find a better option, then he stays. I trust BA to figure things out. These coaches in less than one full year have done very good imo. This is a tougher, more physical team than last season. They actually signed some good free agents. The kicking game ain’t great but it is slightly improved. Our DBs are progressing nicely. BA will figure the rest out over the next season or two.

I look at how much he moves the ball and makes plays reason I want to keep him. Tampa has never had a QB who just continues to move the ball downfield. Plus he has yet to have a decent defense for an entire season, no RB, and has had multiple offenses to run. In my opinion he has had to carry a poorly built team for years. I’m just not ready to blow the thing up yet until he gets his second year with Arians like we all expected, and actually has a decent defense for an entire season like all the other good QBs have. Sprinkle in a decent running game and now teams have to key on the run as well which they have not had to do since Doug was here. That in itself will pull the guys sitting underneath his routes more to the line of scrimmage which will help reduce his TO’s greatly. Do you think teams were actually scared of our running game? We just see the big picture and are trying to protect the team and fans from repeating mistakes we have made with other past HOF QBs we let go. Jameis deserves at least another season. All these are reasons on why I pull so hard to not let him go. Go Bucs! Go Jameis!

To smart football fans INTs are a BIG deal. And when you lead the league in turnovers, YOU are a big problem. FACT.
That in itself would cause smart football not to like a player. To suggest there is more to it is ridiculous.

This whole thing reminds me of the Kirk Cousins/ Redskins situation. I love this team but it is just clear that only poorly run organizations get themselves in these situations. The Redskins did the franchise/rip him in public routine with Cousins and I think it worked out well for Kirk Cousins who is looking at playoff football, while the Redskins just hired yet another coach with also yet another new personnel guy. So they have a young QB that will have a new head coach after just one year and a new direction. Sound familiar?

Vikings from a couple of years ago should be the model to follow. Solid defense, good receivers and running game and Case Keenum at QB. They went to the conference championship game. Bucs shouldn’t be afraid of finding another QB.

People don’t like the multi year contract but understand contracts are tradeable. When QB’s are looking for 40-45 mill in the next 2-4 years a 32 million dollar contract is a bargain for a team that won’t wanna pay 40. Did all you Jameis haters can be happy. We will never win a super bowl, or go deep into the playoffs with Winston. He is too inconsistent. 5k yards, 32 TDs is great, but 30 INT and 7 pick sixes a year will now get you to the playoffs in this league. Can Winston be fixed? Bruce is a loyal dude… just look at what he says about his coaches. And how much he kept in touch with jameis since he was a kid… if you think bruce is gonna kick a 25yr old guy to the curve that he has known for 16years, you are crazy… that just aint who bruce is.

The Winston homers that think turn overs don’t matter should never comment on football moving forward. So its great if our defense creates turn overs and its expected but if Winston turns it over 4 times in a game its ok or its fixable after 5 years? This is delusional thinking. Winston doesn’t need to be resigned whatsoever under any circumstances. The fan base that is already tiny will be gone after game 5 of 2020 when they go 2-3 and nothing has changed.

Man please don’t delay the inevitable. A 6th high turnover season and more losing. I can’t take another decade of this stuff from the Bucs or Winston.

If this is true and they resign Winston I not only WILL NOT buy season tickets next year I’ll be done with this team all together. I refuse to endure anymore trash QB play and be force fed that crap for another year or more.

I do not know which is worse. Either the Dungy/Gruden run for the SB where until the last 15 seconds of the game you never knew if the Bucs would win or lose. Or the JW show where a new Vegas line of under/over interceptions even has the bookies scratching their heads. Don Santito would’ve made a killing in these times.
But this I know. I trust Coach Arians’ football judgment and, consequently, that of of his staff. I want them—happy.
I also know that Coach Arians’ football philosophy has always being—“keep firing”. He’s not going to change now.
All that being said, if JW is resigned, the contract should include a provision where the team will buy him prescription goggles and he will be obligated to use them. Even on a Uber ride, or in the throne.
And throw away the visor. For all we know, JW can’t even see the raised fingers in the stands.

If he has never used corrective prescription lenses or has worn the wrong prescription, he’ll never know the difference.
It’s the glaring difference between diving for crabs or lobsters, with and without a diving mask.
