Anthony Becht: Dump Jameis Sign Bridgewater
December 31st, 2019Teddy! Teddy! teh-DEE! teh-DEE!
You might hear that chant if you drive through the neighborhood of former Buccaneers tight end Anthony Becht.
Becht worked for the Buccaneers during several years of this decade when his playing career ended. You’d hear him on the Buccaneer Radio Network and see him on Buccaneers.com.
Becht, who played 11 seasons in the NFL, moved on a couple years ago to work for the New York Jets, in addition to his busy schedule as a game analyst calling college football games. But Becht still lives in town and keeps a close eye on the Bucs, as regular readers here know.
And Becht has seen enough of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.
He’s done.
Too many mistakes from a hard-working veteran QB means it’s time to find someone more efficient, Becht told WDAE radio yesterday.
“He’s the hardest working quarterback that I’ve seen come through the doors of Tampa Bay, you know, in the last decade-plus. And he puts the work and the time in. The question is, “What’s the problem?” Becht said.
“…I would rather see a quarterback throw for 3,500, 25 TDS and 10 interceptions. And I truly believe that this team would have won at least 10 games this season with that kind of output at the position. … “I think Teddy Bridgewater is the quarterback that this team needs to get them over the hump.”
Don’t get caught up in paying Jameis top-of-the-market money and use the cash to preserve key pieces on defense, Becht said, but his focus stayed on Bridgewater, the former Vikings starter and current Saints backup.
Becht liked what he saw and heard of Bridgewater during the 2018 offseason and preseason, in addition to what he did this year as a starter when Drew Brees was out.
“He’s never been plagued with the turnovers and the situations that put your team in a bad spot,” Becht said of Bridgewater. “[The Bucs] can get the quality plays they want out of this system with another guy.”
There was more from Becht, but you get the point.
Becht also kept coming back to how Jameis works so hard but hasn’t improved. So Becht doesn’t want Jason Licht and Bucco Bruce Arians to get blinded by Jameis’ potential and the great plays he makes.
Buckle up for an interesting offseason, Bucs Fans.\

Who said bridgewater can throw for 25tds??? He started 6 games and threw 9tds and 4 came against tampa lol. Finding a qb that can throw for 25tds and 10ints is like finding someone on the street that can give u 10 sacks
December 31st, 2019 at 9:13 am
What’s his price going to be?
December 31st, 2019 at 9:17 am
9 over 6 games projects to 24 in 16….Bridgewater threw 2 interceptions…..so that projects to 3.5
So…….24-4 would be OK for sure…..
Bridgewater is definitely an option. There will be other bidders…..

“LOL
This goes to show you how stupid our local sports media is here in TB

I’m sure 15-20 mill or less than the tag. Remember he’s making backup money right now. I’m sure he’d sign for a team friendly contract for a legit chance to be a starter.

Carr, Luck, Bridgewater, Dalton all interesting choices. We pretty much know their ceiling. Winston found a new low along with his new high. Is it going to get us deep into the playoffs or a SB? Multiple mistakes in playoff games is not a recipe for success.
In BA I Trust!
December 31st, 2019 at 9:24 am
I heard the entire interview. Becht wasn’t wrong with any points he brought up and he’s been a solid Jameis Winston supporter for years. Went toe-to-toe with T-Kras on the Jameis debate over the season so it was surprising to hear him say that yesterday.
Becht’s main point is that the team needs consistent play at the QB position because this team is not far away from making a deep post-season run. After 5 years we have all seen that Jay-Miss is not consistent enough. Stats are irrelevant at the QB position if the team is losing because of inconsistency. Heck, why is it that most of us *knew* Jay-Miss was going to throw a Pick-6 to end that game? It’s because we have seen it before, too many times.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:25 am
Its fun to talk about, but he isnt leaving New Orleans.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:28 am
Lets be real here…
A huge contribution, and a fair assessment to Jameis’ turnovers is 3 things:
1) New offensive system. This is partially on Jameis’ learning curve (see Carson Palmer), but also on the WRs learning a new system. Out of 30 INTs, I would associate maybe a minimum of 8 or more INTs to this.
2) Injuries to starting WRs. When you have OJ doing MJ type behind the back passes with the ball and Watson/Perriman, et al running in the wrong direction, INTs happen. My guess is this might be at least another 6 INTs.
3) BL: there are certain plays that the Bucs run that are highly prone to INTs compared to others (see short out-routes); wake up Brian and quit being so insistent on running those plays (yes that includes using Dare in 3rd and short). Another 4 – 5 here?
My point is I think Jameis could easily be a 25/10 guy next year. Not bad for a gunslinger type of QB. This is even more likely too happen if the Bucs have a REAL RB. Jameis is only 25 years old. I think a BIG factor in the Glazers decision about Jameis is looking like a total tool if Jameis turns it around with another team. If you think the Bucs are ridiculed now, how bad would that be?! LMAO
Jameis will be back. Take that to the bank.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:30 am
Tampabaybucsfan did u really project bridgewater numbers for the rest of the year ??
Do u not know that teddy threw 14tds and 9ints in a full season with the vikings and they won 11games… do u think tampa can win with 14tds lol. Last year mariota had 7tds and 2ints and got benched. Explain how a qb gets benched for NOT turning the ball over
December 31st, 2019 at 9:31 am
Tampabaybucfan where did you learn math…. bridgewaters INTs would average just over 5.
We can do numbers games all day. There are numbers for both sides. He has stats that put him in the ranks of some of the best to ever play, he also has stats that put him with the worst.
Question is can Licht and Arians form a team around him that can win? Stats don’t mean crap here. We know Jameis can make the throws, to both teams, so can our D play like they did down the stretch and get more turnovers to equalize Jameis turnovers. That is how we win with him.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:31 am
Taysom Hill would gladly leave to be a starter. Hill is a RFA and a good passer , not to mention the fastest QB in the league. For once , be smart and ahead of the curve Licht and sign Taysom Hill to an offer sheet.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:31 am
I dont know about Bridge being a better deal then JW but he has a point. If JW works so hard for the last five years and still keeps making dumb mistakes something is wrong. IMO JW believes his own hype I mean who says “Im balling” at 7-9 and no playoff since he has been there and just made int history. Dude needs a reality check not a pay check.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:33 am
941bucsfan…. oh let me answer, because he didn’t produce points and the defense couldn’t make the other team produce negative points. That’s how a QB with low INTs gets benched.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:34 am
Newsflash Anthony: Teddy Bridgewater was heavily courted by the Dolphins (and maybe some other teams) after the 2018 season but CHOSE to stay with the Saints as a backup, undoubtedly for less money. Why? is the real question.
Could it be because Drew Brees is nearing the end of his time as QB & the Saints are a great fit for Teddy to assume the the starter’s role when Drew retires?
As Bridgewater said in an interview this past June about turning down the Dolphins in favor of staying with the Saints … ” I just sat back and I weighed my options and thought about what would be best for me. This is an opportunity for me to grow, continue to learn and expand my mental capacity as a football player”.
And as Drew Brees added in that article … “”There’s no doubt he’s an extremely talented guy, but he works at it, and I think this offense suits him very well in a lot of things we do, a lot of the capabilities that we have, the creativity we incorporate with everything we do.”
Teddy’s only 27 and he went 5-0 with the Saints this season while Brees was hurt. Brees will be 41 next month. I suspect that pulling him away from the Saints won’t be as easy as some seem to think it will be.
December 31st, 2019 at 9:35 am
Indianabucsfan… well thats who the bucs gonna get.. checkdown charlie. A qb who can throw 25tds 7ints, is rare and if it was that easy everyone would have one
December 31st, 2019 at 9:38 am
It may surprise some here…BUT…as tormenting as Jameis is/has been…I think it is the wisest thing to do is bring him back for ONE more year…along with TRUE competition at the QB position….all of which is a VERY expensive option and Jameis should pay some of the insurance premium ,if he is honest about his uncertain history. He has REALLY put the franchise in a financial bind at this point building the roster. Bringing Jameis back would allow for a OL with the first pick…and if the Bucs are lucky they can trade down , trade OJ for a 2nd and end up with 2-3 trench guys and RB in the first 3 rounds…
December 31st, 2019 at 9:40 am
“Good points Senor Harry but
you dont have to think or guess
Jameis was indeed a 25/12 guy for 4 years before BA/BL organic offense

December 31st, 2019 at 9:51 am
“With another quarterback? Oh yeah. If we can win with this one, we can definitely win with another one, too.’’ – Head Coach of the Buccaneers Bruce Arians
Best comment of his whole Bucs career…
If Arians really is so great as a qb Coach, the only way to back that up is dump JW and achieve success next year with a WINNER… Then people will know it was JW that was just being uncoachable….
December 31st, 2019 at 10:04 am
What is the fascination with Derek Carr?
I have heard several people mention him. (above included)
He is a likeable kid, but is not really anything special at the QB position.
I don’t really get it.
As far as Bridgewater…. he is a good, serviceable QB, but I don’t think he is the right fit for this team, with these receivers.
Jameis IS…. if he can cut the turnovers in half.
Before everyone throws fire at me…… yes I KNOW that is a big “if”.
I believe he can.
December 31st, 2019 at 10:06 am
If the Bucs improve the running game, those stats go away… The pass numbers are high because of no running game… You are not going to have both a great running attack and 5000+ yards passing… Or at the least it will be extremely rare… So why isn’t it now? Because of the lack of running game!
December 31st, 2019 at 10:07 am
Come on man this Bridgewater stuff is trash. He’s got a bum knee, a history of injury issues and he’s not a dynamic playmaker. If the Bucs let jameis walk I might be done with this team.

December 31st, 2019 at 10:21 am
^^ No disrespect intended at all, 1976, but are you REALLY imagining Taysom Hill as starting QB for the BUCS??
December 31st, 2019 at 10:25 am
Yall seem to forget it takes about a full season to get BA’s system down do u really think he will want to start over with another qb or our gm n owners for that matter. Winston can cut his ints down with 3 easy thing him n the wr will have a year under their belt in this system(u seem to forget he didnt have the top 2 in these last two games) another good rb if barber is our #3 instead of #1/2 we can run more hinch throw less n have more checkdowns n a oline with the final piece add to shore it up n protect him a bit more plus help the rb with better holes. Oh and bonus point if we can keep most of that dline the way the secondary was starting to gel we wont need 35pnts a game to have a chance to win, but bo yall right let’s start over with a new qb cuz if u think anyone will come in to this system for the first time and ball out right of the RIP ur an idiot (manning & rivers didnt). We will at the very least bring jw back for 1 more season 🤷♂️
December 31st, 2019 at 10:26 am
JW DOES have a gun for an arm….he can and sometimes does thread amazing needles downfield. He’s thrown for over 5,000 yards…yadda yadda…NOBODY can argue against his physical skills.
But here are two observations from someone ready to see JW hit the highway.
1.) I keep hearing about bad D…bad OL…no running game and how JW could win with good D…Kicking game…OL and running game…DUH…as BA alluded to yesterday there are dozens of NFL QB’s who can with with all those ingredients!!! I hear about bad routes…getting pounded in the pocket yadda yadda…
Here is what I have yet to hear. Do the freaking math. JW’s int’s are not an accident. When you attempt throws into tight windows the % of success drops…the % of ints increases exponentially. JW’s int % is DOUBLE the league average! If he was average he’d have 14 not 30 ints. JW is so overconfident in his abilities that he tries passes that SMART NFL QB’s simply do not. Sometimes he’s the hero..30TD’s 5,000…frequently the goat…30 ints and a LOSING record. That’s why the SMART QB’s do not try them so often. Is JW going to get smarter after five years and the QB whisperer?
Why does nobody talk about the heroic catches the best receiving corps in the NFL ROUTINELY make. Perriman has played like a #1 WR and his catch in the end zone was what made JW remarkable…how many times did Godwin make JW look awesome….ME13?
Envision what these targets would do for ANY QB!!!
2.) While we’re envisioning…imagine an acrimonious contract negotiation with the Bucs finally caving to JW and his agent.
Perhaps a one year deal in the high 20 million range…neither side is truly happy.
The first game Bad Jameis(Choke Jameis) shows up in a home game and throws a horrible interception, fights could break out in the stands. Not between fans of opposing teams but fans of the same dang team for and against JW…..this could get truly UGLY! Especially if JW keeps running his mouth like he did in that post game presser.
December 31st, 2019 at 10:27 am
look at his passing numbers from his 5 years at BYU and learning from Drew Brees is valuable , not to mention 4.4 speed. Also consider the intel you would gain about the inner workings of Saints offense and individual player strengths and weaknesses. NFL future stud QB’s will be dual threats like Jackson and Mahomes.

941bucsfan:
I don’t hate the Teddy Idea but I like the Andy Dalton idea better. We can trade for Dalton who is under a team friendly 16 million dollar a year deal.. Those who laugh at Andy Dalton and support Winston aren’t looking at things close enough. My favorite defense of Winston is the team around him isn’t good enough. Has anyone here seen the talent Andy has worked with?
To answer your primary question of what qb can throw 25 TD’s and 10 INT’s Andy is your man he has done that or similar throughout his entire career with a lot less weapons than what we have now. Check his stat lines particularly the TD to INT ratio. The most INT’s he has thrown in a season was 20 but in that season he also threw 33 TD’s his most ever.

Take a look at his extended action in preseason against chargers-video is out there. Hill is just a freakishly fast and strong athlete , and that is the direction smart teams are going with the QB position. But with Licht as GM my last statement probably disqualified the Bucs.

So for all of those Jameis supporters please tell me what excuses Lamar Jackson has? He had to learn a completely new system, new coaches, and build rapport with his receivers etc and look at where he is at. Jameis has had 5 years to build rapport with his receivers and other offensive players yet he continues to make the same mistakes….

Some of you people are more Jameis fans than Bucs fans . And it’s all because you’d rather be right than admit you were wrong . If any other QB came in here and threw 30 int , those same people would be calling for his head . It’s sad , that people are player over team .

Army if you asking this question you literally don’t understand anything about football. If you switched Lamar and Jameis they would both be god awful as there is no way Jameis could succeed in that offense and there zero chance Lamar could succeed in our offense. They 100% built their offense around Lamar which is outstanding coaching and he is playing wonderfully in it but that does not mean he would do anything in our offense.

Everyone talking about Taysom Hill as a starting QB are clearly insane. Dude has never started a game in the NFL. Dude has never taken more than a few snaps in an entire game. He is a nice gadget player. I really like him a lot. But any team that signs him to be a starting QB should be immediately shutdown. BTW, due to his Mormon mission and medical redshirts, the dude is 29 going into his 4th season.
December 31st, 2019 at 12:15 pm
Stafford has put up incredible numbers on awful teams. He gets rid of the ball very quickly, wouldn’t take all the sacks Jameis does and with Arians coaching him, he’d be very good in a Buccaneer uniform. The question is, does Detroit want to move on from him.
Dalton is intriguing because he does have a good arm and has taken them to the playoffs. Its somewhat unfair to judge him recently because since Marvin Lewis left, the Bengals have been worse than the Bucs. For more than a few seasons the Bengals did challenge the Steelers for that division.
Rivers has a good year or two in his career. He can throw the deep ball although I have to be concerned about his mobility.
From Josh Freeman to Jameis Winston we have seen the disadvantages of big strong quarterbacks that don’t read defenses well and have had accuracy problems. Bridgewater is precise the way he delivers the ball where a receiver doesn’t have to be a ballet artist to make a catch. He doesn’t have gun like JW but how important is big yards per pass vs. completing 70% instead of 60%. 30 interceptions vs less than 10. Time of possession is a big issue with Winston, he’s so up/down, hot/cold, brilliant/dumb. Steady is needed for this team. Thats what you have to love with Brady and Brees, they never panic. Matt Ryan has no mobility but vs Bucs who were pressuring him relentlessly, he still made good throws under pressure. Jameis under pressure, not so good.
The quarterback position is very cerebral, anyone that has played behind Drew Brees and has worked with Sean Payton has to have a great idea of how to play the position. Teddy is a good choice.

As far as Taysom Hill’s age-I got news for you-29 is just getting about ripe as a QB(Brady 42-Brees 41). As for the time away from football for 2 years doing good works speaks to the man’s quality of character. His limited usage at Nawlins and the 2 years away means he has not been physically beat up. Hill is a freak and the fastest and strongest QB ib the NFL.
Get on the Taysom wagon and let’s sail the pirate ship to the Superbowl with Captain Hill at the helm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the QB who would give us the best chance to win next year might be Phillip Rivers.
Doubtful the stars will align to make it possible…first we know Rivers wants to play…but for how much? What makes us sure the Chargers won’t end up signing him? Anybody with any info about that situation.
Rivers does NOT need money….he has made his bones in the league although an SB win and a couple more years might move him into HOF territory…he is a family man who has lived on the West Coast.
I think Rivers takes one look at this defense…our receivers..yeah even our OL…sees ROJO’s potential…and BA’s deep ball offense and the Bucs of 2020 are made for a vet like Rivers.
So would he play for the right dollar? Mess with his family with a cross country move? If those answers are yes then BA and the Bucs would be his best bet.
December 31st, 2019 at 2:06 pm
Why wouldn’t Bridgewater or any FA QB want to come to the Bucs? Start at QB, make a ton of money, best receiving corps in the league, a vastly improved defense from midseason and maybe an improved running game through FA and the draft. Not advocating for Bridgewater, but the Bucs probably are a QB (whom takes care of the ball) away from making the playoffs.

Jameis throw a lot of interceptions but this year he threw a lot more than usual Was it the new offense or what Arians should be the one to answer that This is not an excuse for Jameis because a lot of his bad decisions this year was on Jameis. As Arians said Jameis can see those players, therefore if you have 3 defenders covering your receivers don’t throw the damn ball in there.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Just about ANY qb available (Andy Dalton, Philip Rivers … even Mariota) would be better than Teddy Bridgewater who can’t throw the ball, has an insanely weak arm, and is super thin … he’ll get murdered in Arians system and drive Evans and Godwin crazy throwing nothing but check-downs.
Anthony Becht has lost his mind!
Jameis is the PERFECT “available” QB for Arians
Jake Eason is the best guy in the draft for Arians
Phillip Rivers is the best OLD VET for Arians
However … Jameis is better than Eason and both better and younger than Rivers.
JAMEIS WILL GET PAID $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I think that Bridgewater would get obliterated in this offense. The quarterback is more exposed because of the 5-7 foot drops, unlike the mainly dink and dunk offense of New Orleans. Teddy is also less mobile than Jameis, has a weaker arm, and a gruesome injury history. He’ll probably throw for less picks than Jameis, but it will be because he can’t finish the season. Pass.

Anthony Becht is an absolute idiot for this take. Becht is an idiot for this and loses the tiny little bit of credibility that he had. Becht is a Bafoon…

I’d sign Teddy (sready) Bridgewater now..over Jameis in a heartbeat. The guy can make all throws and he is NOT..a turnover machine. But we won’t Arians will keep Jameis. Watch and see.

If Bridgewater can find a wide open, check down, run for 20 yards when presented, not stare down a target, and this is tough…….throw it out of bounds, then get him. Lights out smarter than jameis

The ONLY concern with Bridgewater, is that knee.
Hes a much better QB than Jameis.
He would make this offense sing!
