The season ended as it began, with Bucs beating Bucs in Heartbreak City.
In Week 1, it was a home loss against the 49ers under the weight of 4 turnovers, including a pair of pick-6s thrown by Jameis Winston.
In Week 17, the Bucs dropped a 28-22 OT decision at home to Atlanta, fueled by three turnovers, 12 penalties, Matt Gay’s forgettable afternoon and the last of Winston’s 7 pick-6s on the season.
That makes a tidy total of 41 giveaways and a final turnover ratio of minus-13. The only teams with a worse differential are the Bengals, Panthers, Giants and Chargers. Those clubs combined for a 16-48 record. Is that really the kind of company you want to be keeping?
Winston became the first NFL QB to throw at least 30 interceptions since Vinny Testaverde was picked off 35 times for the 1988 Bucs. That was Vincenzo’s second year as a pro. This is Year 5 for Winston, who has vowed once again to work on cutting down his mistakes.
Buc fans have heard this song before. It’s a classic 12-bar blues, a tale of woe with a promise to repent. The only part missing is an Eric Clapton guitar lick.
The coin toss had hardly tumbled to the turf before Winston locked onto Cameron Brate. Unfortunately for Buc fans, so did Atlanta’s stud middle linebacker, Deion Jones.
“Kind of reading the route,” Jones said after the Falcons jumped the Bucs to finish second in the NFC South. Feeling the route and also reading the quarterback’s eyes … and his demeanor.”
Bruce Arians wasn’t in a happy place after a 2-5 finish at Raymond James Stadium. He offered up his harshest assessment to date of Winston’s penchant for giveaways. He didn’t talk about the wind or poorly run routes. He talked about a deep offseason dive into No. 3 and a decision whether to bring him back in 2020.
Demar Dotson, who may have played his final game in pewter, told me he still believes that Winston will lead this franchise to greatness.
At the moment, respectability appears to be a far more reasonable goal.
Here’s how the Bucs ended their season on a 2-game losing streak, despite some outstanding individual performances:
* Ask Matt Ryan if the Bucs have a pass rush. Five weeks after chasing Ryan all over Atlanta, Tampa Bay sacked him six times and hit him on 14 other occasions. Leading the charge were the usual suspects, Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul. Barrett ended his historic year by dropping Ryan three times, adding three tackles for loss and five hits. I saw Barrett’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, before the game and when I mentioned No. 58 and potential free agency, Rosenhaus couldn’t hold back a huge grin. JPP was right behind with a pair of sacks and a forced fumble. Both of these guys need to be locked up before testing the market.
* Few players in the league improved as markedly as Breshad Perriman down the stretch. In posting his third consecutive 100-yard game, Perriman continued to display exceptional hands and body control. He’s more than a burner — he’s a keeper.
* Matt Gay didn’t have a bad rookie season, but he shouldn’t be handed the kicker job next fall … because he hasn’t earned it. When you miss five extra points and eight FG attempts, you need to come to training camp looking over your shoulder. His missed FG try against the Giants was brutal and his three errant FG attempts Sunday were instrumental in the setback. Arians says Gay has a tendency to struggle at RayJay. In the spirit of John McKay, somebody needs to tell Gay that’s too bad because the Bucs intend to play their home games there.
* The Bucs averaged 6.5 yards per carry, and it certainly wasn’t because Peyton Barber ran to daylight. It was Ronald Jones, knifing through the Falcons for the first 100-yard game of his career, needing only 11 carries. Jones didn’t allow an early fumble to ruin his day and he made a strong final impression on this coaching staff.
* You could make a credible argument that the Bucs had no right to win the game, anyway. Atlanta’s 28 first downs doubled the home team and the Falcons registered 87 snaps, compared to only 46 for Tampa Bay. Atlanta couldn’t pull away despite a 10-0 advantage because the Falcons were awful in the red zone and Matt Ryan can’t move.
* While Lavonte David was relatively quiet, Devin White made some big noise with a 91-yard fumble return for a score. Don’t be shocked if White joins David, Luke Kuechly and Deion Jones as impact inside linebackers in the division next fall.
* Jamel Dean wasn’t credited with a single pass breakup Sunday. Here’s why: Ryan threw very few of his 51 passes in Dean’s direction. That’s a sign of respect for a rookie corner making quite a name for himself.
* Another aspect of Bucs beating Bucs: Tampa Bay led the league with 133 penalties.
* Speaking of flags, give Arians his props for challenging a non-call midway through the third quarter when Perriman was mugged by CB Isaiah Oliver on a long incompletion. Upon review, Oliver was flagged 33 yards for pass interference. Non-calls for pass interference are seldom reversed in the NFL, but Arians would not allow himself to be intimidated by the long odds.
* Arians and Jason Licht have very difficult decisions to make, but don’t forget that the Glazers own the franchise and they own the final call. Tony Dungy says the Bucs need to retain Winston, but NBC colleague Rodney Harrison suggests it’s time to move on.
“I completely disagree,” Harrison says. “You have five years to watch him play. As a quarterback, your most important responsibility is taking care of the football. He does not do that. 30 interceptions — you can’t win football games like that.”

I’m glad someone gets it here that the Glazers will make the decision. Arians only has an input. It worries me Arians thinks the Buc need to study Winston more. The fans have been held hostage two years longer than need be. Hmmm, what as the attendance yesterday and what did fans say leaving the game. THOSE are who the Glazers need to listen to.

See this is typical of how the national media is celebrating Winston’s record setting year. Local media needs to get on board and stop being so down, records are made to be broken-eventually. Then the local’s can be sad.
But today is a day to celebrate real accomplishments, never before seen type of stuff.

Finally… Harrison said it…as did Arians in the after game press conference. The Bucs will NEVER…. or if you didn’t hear it the first time so it can sink in…NEVER win a championship or a playoff game with those kind of errors. Is that fine with you? It is the reality…and I’ve been saying it for months. Now maybe the purpose of some of you is to find some Sunday afternoon activity. If that is the case, enjoy the Jameis clown show, or if you prefer the frosty in the Florida sun meltdown. Mr. Entertainment. But if you want to cheer for a team with a chance of winning…something to be proud of…something more than cheap entertainment at your and the communities expense, it is time to allow Jameis to hit the road, assuming a decent Vet that can take care of the ball and a good young draft potential future QB can be drafted and developed. I know we live in the era where geek shows are the rage…. but is that what we really want for the Bucs?

Most fans blame losses on the obvious…..missed FGs, fumbles, interceptions…..but the Bucs are very, very sloppy, inconsistent & undisciplined…..we have untimely penalties, run poor pass routes, miss communications, missed blocks….
And, our punt & kickoff returns are horrible…..poor blocking, penalties…..
We desperately need to clean this stuff up. Good teams don’t do this.

I tend to agree with you a lot but not as much on this post. We have times with missed blocks and as we are the heaviest passing team in the league it is easy to see on pass plays then run plays. However, overall this year our O line did fine. Not great but solid as a passing team.
Again as much as we pass, I do not see a lot of poorly run routes. If you want to say Dare runs poor routes, I will agree. But our receivers – no. Our tight ends – no.
It is a hate the Bucs day so I knowmore will agree with you. But I said my thoughts.

My point was that there are many other things that happen in games that aren’t so noticeable that affect the outcome…
By missed blocks, I’m speaking mostly of run blocking and kick return blocks.
By poor route or communication issues…..like the Justin Watson route causing the first Winston interception.
Our pass blocking has been excellent…..
When we have a poor run block that keeps us converting a 3rd & 1, for example….it kills a drive and could ultimately cost us points…..many fans simply don’t account for that and it could happen 2 or 3 times in a game.
And…..yes…..our kicker cost us that game yesterday…..but I’m not ready to run him out of town but would challenge him throughout training camp with competition.

This team cannot play consistent COMPLEMENTARY football.
The defense and run-game shows up and the kicker craps himself. If the kicker isn’t crapping himself, our team is committing penalties. As if that weren’t enough, how about the signature play for “Mr. 30/30″ on a day he breaks 5,000 yards?!!!

It’s not as simple as throwing less picks and he’ll be a great qb. Jameis threw for 5000 yards for the same reason he threw 30 picks. Because he’s a gun slinger that too often throws difficult passes. If he fixes the picks, he loses yards and tds. He has two choices. He can keep doing what he’s doing and get tons of yards and picks. Or he can make smarter decisions that lessen the picks AS WELL as the yards and tds and become. If you want 5000 yards from him, you’re going to get 30 picks. If you don’t want 30 picks, you’re not going to get 5000 yards.

The defense has looked bad for so long because Jameis put them in a lot of bad situations. They always were on the field way too much. I can think of many times that got a big stop and then got to take a rest for a couple plays before going right back on the field. All the turnovers and the time that they happen puts stress on the entire team. One player shouldn’t be the cause of so much stress all the time. You really want to spend $30+ million a year for that. He has all the talent in the world but I am not sold he will ever win anything. The only way to get around him is to have a running back that can take the load off the team and at least give the defense the rest they earned for big stops. Defense is the strength right now because offense loves to give it away so much. Keep defense intact and get the pieces to keep the offense on the field.

I want JayMiss gone more than anyone.
However, the transitional tag is the smart way to go. Let some other team have him, over pay and I’ll be happy with the 2 first round picks.
If no one wants him then ok, sign him to a low ball 1 year contract and sign and or draft his replacement.
His new attitude is truly sickening. He’s put this franchise through a lot of BS and to now have his big attitude and say he’s balling makes me want to smack him in the mouth.
We have a great core of players, especially on the defense and we need a complimentary QB to be a CONSISTENT winner.
Please don’t let me hear that it will take another 5 years to find and groom a replacement for the Soiled Messiah.
That BS theory gets proven wrong every year by teams that know how to scout talent.

I have a question. I do not care about the prolific passing yards or even the touchdowns. i want WINS. Let’s say, for argument, you had a QB that threw for 3800 yards 24 td’s and 10 ints, If you keep this defense in tact, that is a 10 win team at least.

For all of you Winston haters tell what our record would be if not for the below. Didn’t the coach say before the year give the QB a good kicking game, defense and more favorable positions thus less penalities/decent running game and watch the picks go down? Well did any of those things happen? Let’s see below from the article above:

So in summary nothing that was said that could help reduce the INTs was actually done. Just more hit air and bluster from yet another coach. Again folks these are his words from before the season and from this very article. But yep it’s all the QBs fault.

5000yds is great. There have been (12) 5000yd campaigns. How many of those led to Super Bowl championships? None. Marino (1984), Brady (2011), and
Manning (2013) made it to SB but lost. I’ll take less turnovers and a strong defense every time.

thunder see I don’t think you get it, how will we score points to win 10 games? We cannot run the ball period unless something major changes there and if you take off almost 2,000 yards passing that means less first downs which means less points. I don’t understand what you guys don’t get. This team has been about 98% reliant on the passing game so you damn well better have a QB that is capable, durable and mentally strong enough to have the entire game put on him week after week after week. Those dudes aren’t walking around on the street my friend.

People we are on here lauding the defense when they finished 30th in yards given up in the air, 30th!!!! The Winston haters will say look at the TOs that’s why our defense sucks, well what does a TO have to do with yards given up in the air? That is fixed?
We finished 24th as a team in offensive rushing, that is fixed?
We had the most penalities in the league, that is fixed?
We were 26th in NFL in FG made % that is fixed?
Yet we were number 1 in the NFL in passing and that is our issue?!?!?!

I know it won’t probably happen but I would like to see the whole defense back next year. Even so signing Shaq, JPP & even Suh & Nassib should be high priority before even thinking about Winston. I also believe they put the transition tag on him. The Bucs with there defense and an average QB would go to the playoffs. I also believe if the Bucs had Fitz instead of Winston they would have been in the playoffs. DEFENSE RULES.

Ndog, only 7 were of the pick 6 variety. I’m sure someone with more time and motivation than myself could see how many yards those turnovers caused to be credited to the defense. I do know 2 in the Titans game were inside of their 10 yard line, so not much yards there. I do know the BUCS gave up somewhere around 128pts off of turnovers, which comes out to about 8pts a game gifted to the opponent. Turnovers are killer, cut those in half and the BUCS might be playing this weekend.

@colonel: 121 points gifted by NPUPPYS man crush. Many in bucs territory! Is the Bucs secondary horrendous… of course! A blind man can see that!!! But hard to defend so many turnovers. By the way, the Bucs defense lead the league in tds scored by them with 7 (I believe). They also got turnovers in all games except 1 and still had a very bad turnover margin. But 5k yards!!! 40, oops, I mean 33 tds thrown! GO BUCS AND GOD BLESS WINSTONS RIGHT ARM

Matt Gay is responsible for 2 of our losses. Jameis responsible for at least 1 if not 2 losses as well.
Some terrible ref calls on fumbles / turnovers, etc.
Man, this team was so close to a 10-6 record this year.

Even if WinSTONED becomes the best QB in the league somewhere else and wins a SB in Tampa next year (LMFAO, fat chance!), it will NEVER be here. He just doesn’t get it. He’s a borderline avg QB who can’t play consistently well in a contract year. No thanks. I will not regret seeing him be a winning QB somewhere else, if it came to that.
Sometimes a player and team need a change of scenery. The Bucs can with without hero ball.
