“No One Has Stopped Us This Year When I Protect The Football”
December 21st, 2019As he should have, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, took credit for today’s loss to the Texans on national television.
Jameis was brutal, throwing his 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th turnovers of the season. And Joe’s not sure any could be blamed on anyone but No. 3.
An edgy and disgusted version of Jameis appeared at his postgame news conference. He blamed himself over and over again,
“No one has stopped us this year when I protect the football. No one,” Jameis said.
Among various other takes on his sloppiness, Jameis said he’ll be a good quarterback when he protects the football, and then he quickly corrected “good” and changed that to great.
Joe rarely posts a full news conference, but this one is the time investment just for the tension-value alone.

Well the team chemistry was off with so many Wrs out as expected but I’m still proud of my Bucs for battling the way they did. Plenty to be excited about and if you can’t see that I question your fanhood. Sometimes days like today just happen.

The ATM looked like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Not a franchise quarterback look to him. Mumbled, stumbled, and spoke in circles. That showed me he is not cool under pressure. Great that he took the blame, but scary that he continues to do THE EXACT SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER AND OVER. This is Jameis. Lots of yards, some nice touchdowns, and a stupid and I mean STUPID amount of careless interceptions. I do not want that guy as my playoff quarterback when you know a defensive game plan to rattle him will always work, especially by a good playoff team. See you later and thanks for 5 frustrating years of sucking and losing. Go Bucs!
December 21st, 2019 at 11:18 pm
There’s a lot of QB’s that would be “great” if they protected the ball. Year 5 these things just can’t happen and we shouldn’t be hearing him say it. With a whole new group of receivers this week some of this can be just not being on the same page as his main core receivers. He’s had a few weeks here that were really good, still had turnovers, but really good! Saying that, you still can’t do those things especially when your D was doing so good.
Like I said in another post…. I would want to be the person deciding if he should come back and if he does at what price. If you want a D that can handle turnovers you really need that Winston money for good D players.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:19 pm
buc15 you are right. We definitely prooved we got enough tools needed to compete in this league. But we make mistakes and beat ourselfs too much to get over that hump…….And the biggest culprit in the mistake catergory is the QB………And when you got a problem at the QB position you got a big problem on your hands.
As good as we are in many areas it just sucks man. Seem to be so close yet still so far away without a good answer at QB. All’s we can do is hope the Front Office has the right answer. As fans all we can do is hold our breath. Just sucks man.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:25 pm
The only question that should be going on now is…… Win despite Jameis? Because today is just what you will get . So how much to invest where? It is not throwing 100 million + at him.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:29 pm
Jameis Winston is the reason the Bucs don’t make the playoffs. His 31 TD’s don’t make up for the bad that has cost his team field posistion and having to come from behind weeks after week becusewe he/we shot our selves in the foot.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:30 pm
This is a competitive football team without a certain player always f’n up. Dude needs a blanket party or a code red. lol
December 21st, 2019 at 11:31 pm
I just scrolled through the last Ten Headlines and I get the feeling that it’s a Bucs Life.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:34 pm
Dang Joe. Handcuffs”
December 21st, 2019 at 11:34 pm
Today’s result was the best possible outcome for Buc fans.
The past 4 wins masked the truth and gave false hope. The team around Jameis has improved. Jameis has not. He is the exact same QB he was in Sept 2015. I truly believe today cost Jameis millions. He is not getting a top tier contract he deserves a franchise tag or 1-2 year deal equal to what he is getting paid per year today.
Tampa’s path to success is to continue to improve the team all around.
Pick up a veteran QB or draft a QB and put Winston on the exact same Leash as Mariota was this year. I would not call him a bust but I would call him not capable of playing a clean enough game to win games like today.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:36 pm
I was totally Pulling for JW today!
The one Bright spot was our D! No matter how many presents Jameis gave our D still got me 12 points in my final. Imagine That!!!! I started the Bucs D in my SB!!!!
December 21st, 2019 at 11:38 pm
The defense is playing playoff caliber football and I believe will be a top 10 unit next year (we’re actually 15 at game time). A freaking game manager could have won this game with a better than average running attack. JW was the reason this game was even close.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:41 pm
The problem is that days like this happen to often.
You just can’t continually do it and expect wins.
Here I was coming to grips with the fact that Hell or high water Jason Licht is gonna resign Jameis (I still do). But It didn’t matter how much I disagreed it wasn’t gonna change a thing unless Jason got fired. So I was softening my stance on Jameis during his mini win streak knowing full well his stats were being inflated because of the lousy defenses we were playing. I just got sort of adjusted to the fact he’s gonna soak us for 30+ mil a year. End of story.
I’m still not confident in his abilities to play smart football.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:42 pm
A franchise QB has 4-6 plays per game that he would like to take back.
Jameis has 6-8 games per season he would like to take back.
That is not something that anyone should call a franchise QB, much less pat 100 million dollars for.
They make trash cans for a reason.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:43 pm
Lamar with Tampa’s Weapons???
December 21st, 2019 at 11:48 pm
Wha wha wha interception
December 21st, 2019 at 11:52 pm
Ok, room. What do you do, then? That’s the fly in the ointment. Not getting Tua or Burrow, they will be long gone by our pick. You want Dalton or Mariota as a free agent? That’s the type of “veteran” QB that will be available. Love how people operate in a vacuum around here. Too bad Light doesn’t get that opportunity. This isn’t to say Jameis isn’t maddening, he is. BUCS LIFE
December 21st, 2019 at 11:54 pm
Let me say this cause I’ve gotta get it off my chest.
STOP STARING DOWN YOUR RECEIVER JAMEIS!
I’m watching you on TV and even I can tell who you’re staring at.
December 21st, 2019 at 11:58 pm
Sign Dalton and draft a q.b..
December 21st, 2019 at 11:59 pm
Mayhem41
Go with a cheaper gap veteran (pick one)
draft a young QB prospect
…and lose or
Pay Jameis millions
salary cap redlined
…and still lose
December 22nd, 2019 at 12:08 am
Mayhem my top 2 choices would be to swing a trade for Carr or Stafford. Think both could be had for a price. If neither could be obtained I would try to lure Phillip Rivers to come to Tampa. Eli Manning is another option, I personally think it’s a bad idea but could see the logic. Andrew Luck could become a wild card too.
But I will still take Winston over all them choices. I’ll remain one of the few fans wanting to see him back but after today do think there’s a real chance the team decides differently which I can understand.
December 22nd, 2019 at 12:16 am
I like the ideal of Carr JJ
December 22nd, 2019 at 12:18 am
The Bucs are just a QB away from being perennial playoff contenders.
The thought of paying Winston all of those Millions is just absolutely ludicrous insane. Re-signing him in any way, shape or form is just delaying the inevitable. Franchise him and next year will only be a rerun of this year.
Winston, by himself, costs the Bucs 4-6 games a year, today being one of those. The defense played too good to lose today but they were dragged down into the grave by Winston.
December 22nd, 2019 at 12:31 am
Kinda funny… I didn’t hear him blame the o line, defense, drops, coaching or running backs.. he also didn’t brag about how many passing yards he has. Interesting because some of you can’t see the obvious problem. TURNOVERS
December 22nd, 2019 at 12:32 am
Jimmyjack, 100% agree with Phillip Rivers
December 22nd, 2019 at 12:40 am
This season has had so many ups and downs. I only predicted for us to win 4 games this year and we are already 2 games better than last year with one to go. The defense doesn’t look putrid anymore and there is true hope now on that side of the ball. We have serious weapons at wide out and with a little tweaking of the offensive line and a threat at running back, we should be more balanced next year.
The big decision during the offseason is going to be what kind if deal to give Winston and what if any competition the front office brings in at quarterback. Winston should be on the team next year, but we can’t afford to break the bank on such an inconsistent quarterback. Hopefully sane heads prevail and we bring in a vet and draft a rookie at quarterback. Frustrating season but not as bad as last year. There is at least some hope again and some players to look forward to watching.
Dear Santa, please make sure that Licht signs Shaq AND JPP.
December 22nd, 2019 at 1:03 am
Phillip Rivers is the greatest choke artist going into Canton when he retires. He’s only slightly better than Winston always good for throwing a pick at the worst possible times even when he had LT. I’d rather trade for Carr or try sign Dalton. Dalton could’ve won this game with all the open receivers. This was Winstons prove or move game and it is time for him to move on let him pile on the turnovers for another team.
December 22nd, 2019 at 1:08 am
Here’s hoping he asks for too much so the Glazers will say buh bye! If he’s resigned they need to charge him $$1MIL for every turnover in this year and subtract that from the contract. He will never protect the ball.
December 22nd, 2019 at 1:13 am
I’m actually hoping that jaymiss throws a bunch of picks next week. People who are blind by his pros really need to see his cons and real8ze this dude IS NOT A FRANCHISE QB
December 22nd, 2019 at 1:38 am
matt moore as a bridge?
December 22nd, 2019 at 2:40 am
maybe his thumb healed for all those interceptions, if so somebody break it again please
December 22nd, 2019 at 3:32 am
Yes, when this sorry social reclamation project called Winston protects the football, it has been hard to beat the Bucs. And they have another losing record. Translation: Winston, after five years, usually does not protect the football, and it’s been five years. Dump this clown.
December 22nd, 2019 at 3:38 am
Guyz Derek Carr SUCKS AS$ plz remember he had the worst avg pass attempt at 4 yards per pass FOR THE SEASON
I would rather run and gun with WINNY and hear NDog and Pap BWUCY bcuz that CARR SHIP IS NOT GOIN TO VEGAS
CHUCKY IS OFF THAT BUS
December 22nd, 2019 at 3:50 am
“And the biggest culprit in the mistake catergory is the QB………And when you got a problem at the QB position you got a big problem on your hands.”
OMG, Duh, really? Isn’t JimmyJack the guy who has said one week Winston isn’t the answer the next week says he is the real deal? Gotta look at the whole body of work. In 5 years, still the same. This won’t win in the NFL. Next.
Some really stupid Bucs fans out there.
December 22nd, 2019 at 4:40 am
Come on Joe! Stop throwing JW under the bus. He saved the day from our terrible defense.

Joe, when Captain Winston repeatedly says during a press conference, “I just can’t turn over the football…I just can’t do it.” … why does not a single person holding press credentials have the balls to say, “Yet…YOU…do!” ???
Asking for a friend who is tired of JW’s groundhog press conferences where he parrots the same damned narrative over and over.
Is it fear that confronting honesty might jeopardize access?

Favre threw 29 INTs for the Jets the year before he had his best career season ever with the Vikings. I’m not happy but I’m also not worried. He is who he is. He’s Favre… Favre had as many 20 INT seasons as 4000 yard seasons. Favre had five seasons where threw the same number or more INTs as TDs. Five seasons below 80 rating. Not super worried. I know he’s going to work to get better. We’ll see. This is a team on the rise.
December 22nd, 2019 at 5:46 am
America’s QB Jameis Winston already has as many 4 INT and 5 INT games in his career as the Gunslinger that some love to compare him to, Brett Favre. They each have five 4 INT games and each have one 5 INT game.
Jameis needed just 71 games to tie him, Brett spread his out over 302 games (just as a fun FYI one of his 4 INT games came against TB).

Let’s not forget about the dropped passes by the defense; the four interceptions could/should have been six or seven. BTW…This occurs every game. I’m sick and tired of the excuses e.g., hand injury, lack of receiving group, no running game…it’s interesting these comments are not made when positive things happen. Give me the ROOKIE from Arizona with the emotional quotient he has and the bucs with this defense would be preparing for the Super Bowl not watching. I still think it goes back to the crab leg curse. For those who don’t recall the incident, he was caught shoplifting these from a store during his final year in college and was not arrested because of his NFL status; however, his character was questioned. Then on draft nigh he was eating crab legs. I will buy and eat some crab legs when he is gone.
December 22nd, 2019 at 6:26 am
Buc15..when you get two, three, or four times that age, you will know that good intentions or comments, without commitment and change mean nothing. We can be proud of the way the D battled throughout the game to overcome the Hyde Jameis start. We are past just saying “the team fought”…time for accountability.
December 22nd, 2019 at 6:29 am
Brandon…ROTFL…Jameis isn’t Favre…Aaron Rodgers wasn’t Favre…Jeff George wasn’t Farve. And to expect him to “bounce back”like Favre, which a completely different guy did the next year of his career, is really, pretty wacky.
December 22nd, 2019 at 6:30 am
Losing hope… if fans aren’t “smelling the coffee” by now, they are truly cult of personality followers and will always view him as some Messiah.
December 22nd, 2019 at 6:48 am
I don’t believe Jameis was able to put any zip on the ball because of the thumb.
But when Jameis is uncomfortable because he is facing a good defense, doesn’t have key players etc. ,he is often off during the game early.
Bucs should not commit to Jameis longterm until it is clear he can get over his nerves and
most importantly be one hell of a lot more deceptive on where he is going with the football. He is throwing pick sixes with regularity in part because he is staring down his receivers.
December 22nd, 2019 at 7:18 am
Jameis is UNEXCEPTABLE….
December 22nd, 2019 at 7:27 am
Jameis is not a $25+ million QB for this team.
Pay and resign this D. They’re clicking.
Jameis is just too inconsistent. Never going to win a SB with the penchant for turnovers. More than anyone. Too much to overcome to be a winner.
“But it’s entertaining” the apologists will cry. Shameful loosing mentality.
December 22nd, 2019 at 7:28 am
If Winston threw only an average amount of interceptions, the Bucs would be in the playoffs this year.
Are you a Bucs fan, or a Winston fan? Because it’s becoming clear you really can’t be both.
December 22nd, 2019 at 7:58 am
Bob in Valrico … You & I agree 100% on Jameis’ future (must be the water we drink here in Valrico?). We know who Jameis is. BA knows who Jameis is. Heck, Jameis knows who Jameis is. The only question is ‘What to do about it?’
For better of worse, we’re stuck with Jameis … at least for now. Since we’ll probably draft in the 15-20 range, we’re NOT getting a top pick QB this year. And no FA QBs in 2020 are even close to what Jameis can do even with his penchant for spreading Christmas cheer to the other teams all year round.
Jameis isn’t a Top-5 QB IMO, but we have no choice but to franchise-tag him (and thus pay him like a Top-5 QB). IF the Bucs offer him a long-term, low-ball contract, some other team will beat it (believe it or not, more than half of the NFL teams don’t have long-term franchise QBs and would take a chance on Jameis hoping they could ‘FIX HIM’). He’ll cost us $27 mil, but we can afford that (barely) and still re-sign our starting UFAs (JPP, Suh, Barrett, Nassib) plus several other key backup UFAs.
IF we draft well & spend our salary Cap wisely, Bucs can keep what’s working well AND fix what needs fixing (OLine, RBs, Safety) to compete for a playoff spot in 2020. Of course, THAT’s A BIG ‘IF’ based on our past track record I suppose.
December 22nd, 2019 at 8:05 am
This would’ve been the perfect game to save Jameis from himself by sitting him after the second pick using his thumb as an excuse. Arains could’ve pulled the thumb wasn’t right card, he couldn’t grip the ball right, so we had to sit him. He gave Jameis no life line, he let him throw two more picks, one ending the game. It was another S Show at home by Jameis. Memories of his first ever game at Ray Jay. Like his first game this season throwing picks for TD’s against the 49er’s. He hasn’t changed, he won’t change. I hope today BA realizes that. He could’ve pulled JW from the deep end, but yesterday BA let Jameis drown.
December 22nd, 2019 at 8:42 am
My thoughts with Jameis are Arians is gonna draft a QB in the second round and develop him to replace Jameis. I think they franchise Jameis him to buy time to develop a QB. I’ve just come to the conclusion that Jameis is not gonna change his ways of making bad decisions which seems to cost this team wins . not all Losses are because of his turnovers but many are. We all know and I am pretty sure Arians has already decided what he’s gonna do about the QB position and unless Jameis make a miracle change Jameis is not the answer Jameis is good QB but sooner or later the team is gonna go sour on him. I mean the defense played its ass off and every time they made big plays to get the ball Jameis gives it right back
December 22nd, 2019 at 8:55 am
If Jameis will not take a team friendly contract–franchise him for one year and set goals for him to meet if he wants a new contract.JAMEIS IS A BROKEN RECORD–“I JUST HAVE TO DO BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 22nd, 2019 at 8:58 am
There’s a real problem when asked are they seeing things and jumping routes ? The answer is absolutely yes , look at the picks on the first two drives and then those out routes !! Come On Man !! Who didn’t know where the ball was going on that last pick !! That pick is on Lefty and Bruce , going to the well one too many times because you have a terrible short yardage run game !! I mean awful short yardage run game !!
I will say that the pass protection was the best yesterday that I have seen in a long long time !!
Winston stunk it up but I have a hard time with the Bucs self evaluation ability as clearly teams are all over jumping the out routes and dropping the LB under certain route looks . Solution dump offs to the back are open all day for 6 and 7 yards and screens are there if they can execute .

———————————————————————-
1. NFL QB play as a whole has vastly improved since Favre played, especially since Favre’s early years which was almost 30 years ago.
2. Favre’s fifth year in league he threw a league high 38 touchdowns with only 13 picks and his team went 11-5 and narrowly lost the NFC Championship game. His next year he led the league in touchdowns with 39 with only 13 picks and won the Super Bowl. The year after that he led the league in touchdowns with 35 with only 16 picks and almost went back to the Super Bowl again but lost in NFC Championship game.
So yeah, Jameis is practically identical to the HOF quarterback.
December 22nd, 2019 at 9:56 am
At this point the needle is pointing towards rethinking the most important position on the team. Inconsistancy and bad turnovers vs good teams turn into points on the short fields. Jameis Winston thrown for 30 touchdowns or 180 points. Yet he has also thrown 6 INTs that have been returned for touchdowns (-36) points.
In a league where so many games come down to a field goal, that nearly a FG a game he has given up. When you add in the other 22 picks which lead to more FG’s and TD’s, thats too many points that opponents didn’t have to drive long fields for. It also changes the game of field position, instead of punting the ball and pinning opponent back, you are giving them an advantage on your defense.
I think a veteran QB that is a better decision maker doesn’t give the ball away and makes it easier to build around this improving defense.
Licht, be smart with your salary cap, you don’t need to throw $25,000,000-$30,000,000 at Winston. You can trade Brate and Howard for decent draft picks and free up money to extend Shaq and JPP. You’ve got good defensive backs now in Murphy-Bunting and Dean. Davis is OK, if he could stop getting caught holding and pass interferring, he’s better than OK.
The big question for Licht is if there is a Herschel Walker-Ricky Williams trade from a GM that wants Mike Evans so badly they will gamble on throwing high draft picks at the Bucs so we can build up the offensive line and get the running backs we need.
You don’t need (3) star receivers to win in the league. NO and Niners are doing it with one, but both teams have good running games and the top defensive lines in football. Godwin can be a Michael Thomas receiver and Periman showed he’s a future star. Evans is worth (2) #1’s and more.
He’s the best player on the Bucs team and not suggesting the Bucs put him on the block but if another team would make an offer Licht couldn’t refuse, now is the perfect time to move him. He’s great but Bucs havn’t won any meaningful games because Mike Evans has never been in a playoff game.
December 22nd, 2019 at 10:28 am
It is amusing to me how everyone overreacts week to week. Winston played poorly, yes. But by my estimation he had 5 or 6 explosive plays dropped or just missed. He had no running game to speak of, and Houston knew exactly what was coming. But he kept trying anyway. I love Winston, and yes this game was rough. But to be honest, i don’t know that more than a handful of quarterbacks would have been able to do any better, and even less than that would’ve tried as hard as he did. Our defense looked incredible; if either Godwin or Evans had been able to go this week, I don’t think the game is close. Rough game for sure, but looking at the context, I’m proud of our team for fighting as hard as they did.
December 22nd, 2019 at 10:34 am
What’s this obsession with Andy Dalton? He’s just an average to below average QB, even when the Bengals were a good team in the mid to late 2000’s Dalton did absolutely nothing to take the team to the next level. I’d rather bring back Jameis at a reasonable price and draft a QB in the mid rounds in the upcoming draft.
December 22nd, 2019 at 12:03 pm
Reporter-Jameis hows the thumb
JW- Feels good, its broke, its gonna be broke still cant turn the football over
Report- in that two min offense seemed like things started to click what changed
JW- I didnt turn the football over
Me-Jameis u think its gonna rain $$$ tomorrow
Jameis- Not if I keep turning the football over
December 22nd, 2019 at 3:21 pm
It’s hilarious to me that the defense has been trash, absolute trash basically four out Winston’s five years and now it’s we’d be in the playoffs with this defense if Winston wasn’t (fill in the blank). It’s been a couple games the defense has been really good. Winston has been playing with hot garbage of a defense for years. Everyone has some blame but now that the defense is actually competent the bucs will be fine next year.
December 23rd, 2019 at 9:32 am
Let him go if you want to lol We’ll be the Chicago bears of the south
