When You Don’t Have A Running Game

This dance that Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians likes to trot out that his running game is no less effective than having Le’Veon Bell in his prime or Barry Sanders in the backfield has passed the point of comedy and is now just downright sad.
And today was proof positive of what happens when you can’t run the ball.
(Please spare Joe the chest-pounding of the Ronald Jones’ 49-yard run. Yes, it was cool. But if Jones was so capable, why did he wait until the 15th freaking game of the season to break one? One run in 15 games does not a good running back make.)
Twice today, if the Bucs had a halfway capable running back, they could have kept drives alive, or at least not settled for a field goal.
It began in the third quarter when the Bucs had the ball in Houston territory on third-and-one. A Peyton Barber run up the middle didn’t get squat. So the Bucs had to settle for a field goal.
Later, the Bucs had a third-and-one at midfield late in the game. The Bucs tried to run Jones off left tackle and he was dropped for a two-yard loss.
By none other than Vernon Hargreaves.
Then later in his postgame remarks, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians talked about how windy it was for throwing the ball and that quite a few near-catches would have gone for touchdowns had the Bucs been playing in a dome and not have to fight the wind.
Well, maybe if you had decent running backs the Bucs would not have had to throw so much (and theoretically, there would have been fewer picks). But instead the running game stinks out loud; and has all year long.
But the coaching (from orders above?) conned themselves into believing they had a top-shelf running attack back in July.
The only time Joe saw Arians get p!ssed at a reporter was in training camp when he was asked about the “subpar” running backs.
There is not one scintilla of evidence the Bucs have good running backs. If the Bucs have evidence to the contrary, Joe is welcome to sit in on a film session — fully off the record — to be educated and enlightened.

BS – Bucs have not invested enough premium picks in OLine- that is fact, ignore it all you want-
All the best running teams have at least 1 and in many cases 2- 1st round picks on OLine! Facts Joe likes to ignore because he never met a free agent RB he didn’t want to waste $ on.

I think it is fair criticism of the runningbacks, they are not game breakers and we need one that is. However Ronald Jones has shown improvement and if he is a part of the backfield next year I wouldn’t have a problem with that. But Dare and Peyton need to move on. We need a draft another running back to keep that position cheap so we can spend money on the defensive side of the football

Have to trade HOWARD and EVANS in order to get several more draft picks which can be used as leverage
get enough for QB PROSPECT and select RB speed guy who can hit a HR. Must choose ELITE OL and pick up a EDGE RUSHER.

The running backs are nothing special but the TEs are the REAL weakness in this running game. We all like Brate and OJ but the fact is, neither of them are complete TEs. You want to run the ball consistently in the NFL you need blocking from more than just the five linemen. Chris Godwin is a better run blocker than all of our TEs. I agree that we need more juice from the backfield but the TE issue often gets swept under the rug and we have a high dollar guy and a first rounder.

Is this like 5 or 6 weeks in a row where no one is giving any credit to the turnaround to the coaching staff. These guys are playing better. The play calling on offense and defense has been solid.

Time to draft an elite, top-tiered back. Jones was an overdraft/reach two years ago. Very few free agent/traded running backs work out. Even less make it to a second contract with a team.

The problem is Dotson can’t run block, Bucs never run off Dotson, other teams know it, so they load up the other side to stop run .

Ho hum…… another season in the books. Best we can wish for is a breakeven campaign. For those who feel we improved welcome to the world of delusion. Last time we actually showed improvement was 2016, before that 2010. Oh well stats are for losers and like a-holes everybodys got an opinion. I will be sad for a few weeks and turn my focus toward Ohio State, My Alumni. Hopefully they will win the College playoffs.
Over the last few years as I progress through retirement I have found my sorrow directed more toward the fans of Tampa. Myself included I have found fans becoming satisfied with less than mediocrity and extremely critical not of the Buc’s but one another. It hurts to hear analyst laugh at the antics of Winston and set new bars like 30-30 for a player that we may pay a kings ransom for next year. I know the guy is from Florida State but the measurement for a good QB is W/L’s not whether he can match his TD’s with his INT’s.
Finally I really feel sorry for the Lavonte Davids, Mike Evans, Ali Marpet’s and many others who play their asses off each week only to be let down by the Clown Show.
Yeah another year down the toillet, but at least the haters will have a plenty to post through the offseason.

I was thinking the same thing about the running game. Bucs go 100+ yds rushing vs Texans (est) <50yds. Bucs also had more passing yards.
A back , should be an off season priority. One that is better suited for the scheme. Add an additional back with pass catching skills and the ability to make the first defender miss and take it home for 6 from anywhere on the field.
That said, I don't expect any Arain's coached team to feed the run game. Rushing attempts, even if there's an upgrade, will not be as valuable as a pass attempt. I don't think that next year we add a complimentary rushing attack. Fans want it, but I don't see BA acquiescing to the fan base anytime in the near future.

You can’t convince me that handing the rock to Vea on some of these one yd runs wouldn’t make a difference. Hargreaves would have never taken him down! Big man who get a big push from a dead stop. Give him a head of steam and he will make his own hole for that elusive yard or two. Running back was his position in high school so he knows how to carry a ball. Think outside the box!

See what pisses me off is people act like today’s performance is the same as other high TO games. It simply isn’t true, today he played Horrible football, but as example the Carolina game was no where near as bad as today. That game he was under constant pressure, his Ears gave crap effort, we had no running game and the defense was crap. Today everything was working around him and he played poorly. Why can people just be honest about what happens?

I have long wondered why the Bucs refuse to use Peyton Barber as a fullback. He is a bull of a man and would help open holes for ROJO.
The Bucs will not sacrifice any receivers in the line-up to do that, or a two back set. That seems to me to be biased towards watching Jameis screw it up.
There are ways to make the running game work better, but we a QB who is more dimensional than the one we have.

Let’s see, the defense played very well today, so can’t use that as an excuse for the loss. And the pass blocking was quite good, so that one’s out too. We had SIX turnovers, including a Pick-6 & a blocked FG that represented 10 points all by themselves. Wait, the running game only got 106 yards in 21 carries; barely 5 YPC.
Yup, it’s the crappy running game alright. As the bottom line in my favorite cartoon says … ‘Sometimes we tend to overlook the obvious.’

Jameis played two games with a broken freaking thumb. The two best WRs in the league didn’t play. Our emerging #4 and arguably fastest WR didn’t play. Jameis threw a tennis ball all week and wasn’t able to establish any timing with his off the street replacement WRs. But he made plays with his arm, feet, heart and toughness that few other QBs can make. He has no running game.
We allowed a blocked kick. We have no return game.
But, we were in it until the end. Brate’s drop killed our comeback.
We have a D, finally. We will win next week, and are one missed FG away from 9-7. An 8-8 season after going 10-22 the previous two years, with a legitimate HC, OC, DC, and support staff gives me hope we are a playoff team next year. If we draft a real game changing RB in the first round then Jameis can throw 30-35 times rather than 50, and we could make a real run.
Now, if Arians doesn’t believe he can coach half of Jameis’s picks out of him then we probably will move on. I’m betting he and Leftwich think a 5000 yard – 30 TD QB is rare and they can improve his interception ratio significantly in year two, especially with a real RB. Go Bucs.
And Joe, maybe you should add a dedicated repository for the naysayers to post their negative drivel so we don’t have to suffer through their low IQ repetitive garbage everyday. Just a thought.

If we did have a really good back would they change how they call plays and be a run first team? Coming into the season the tight end position was supposed to be set up to have a big year, did they set up the play calling for that? The offense that the Bucs have is throwing routes that need time to develop. I just don’t see them pounding the rock if they had one.
I still think both backs need to slow down and wait for these holes to open. You watch these guys go full bore to the lane without even letting it open or wait for another to open.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the Bucs running backs, this is and has been poor offensive line play. Walter Payton is not going to do much better with out holes to run through. The offensive line is the weakest group on this roster.

OR they can let me be the guy doing their drafts. If that were the case, either Dalvin Cook or Nick Chubb would be playing in Tampa instead of the likes of Vita Vea or Ronald Jones. I puked almost as hard when they drafted Jones as I did when they drafted Aguayo.
In any case, the lack of running game (as others have said) starts with the OL, it’s not all about the mediocre backs we have. It is also partially on the play-caller. We saw very little creativity in play designs or more importantly, in the mixture of run-pass to keep the defense off-balance.
Still, there is no question this loss is squarely on the shoulders of (in order):
1. Jameis Winston
2. Byron Leftwich
3. Running backs (a distant third)
Kudos to the defense for making the final score respectable.

Dare and Barber shouldn’t even be on the team. Ronald isn’t a bust, but he isn’t very good either. Our line is above average at pass blocking and below average at run blocking. I’ve said my peace on Jameis enough times to be bored of it myself. We can beat up on cupcakes and even some average teams, but the bottom line is that we are not ready to beat playoff teams.
The season is almost over and there are a lot of positives to take into next year. We have got to find some better offensive lineman in the offseason and at least ONE running back that scares defenses. Arians has done enough here at the end to make me feel somewhat confident for next year. Gosh damn depressing. 😉

Yeah our RBs are pitiful and short yardage is a glaring weakness. Unfortunately running the football is a non factor when you possession the ball in a two minute offense needing a TD.
Winston really kicked all us fans square in the teeth today with garbage football. Downright embarrassing. He makes it harder then it should be to be a Bucs fan.

Yes it’s true we gave no running backs who can run over defenders considering how there are no holes to run through ever. Blame rojo all you want but rarely do you see big runs after fighting defenders at the line of scrimmage. Most big runs are because of the holes that were created by the o line. This o line is a bigger joke than our backs and we are stuck with the line.

That being said it is not the lack of running game that cost us the game so why even argue about it. The Bucs should have won that game 28-14 running away. This team can’t seem to understand that some Sunday’s the best player on the field is the punter and we actually have a good one.

It’s ok. After all. We have a shot at 8-8. Even better we turn around a losing mentally. We are not complete by any means. But hopefully this offseason we can built and not lose good players.
But realistically 9-7 and 8-8 or 7-9 don’t matter. Season was lost halfway the season. We accomplished. Turnaround culture.

The offensive line had a great day. I give them props. Maybe their run blocking needs to be better but it wasn’t bad today. Their pass blocking was very good. One thing about running the ball, is the defense has a say so about it. Look at every team that’s tried to run on the Bucs this season.

Ok so I am going to try to start this talk. It’s early but not to early to bring this up. Brady has limited time in NE. He wants a team with all the receiving parts. Yeah clearly the bucs have that on offense and the D played the Texans well enough to show that next year they can be special if they can keep it together. Need the cap- but Brady- He has already shown he doesn’t have to break the bank to win a ring. He wants a coach who can do it. Arians is one of those coaches. I would do that 100x over Winston and the shoot-in-the-foot play style. Broken hand or not. Plenty of “not” multi-pick games on that resume. #Brady4Bucs2020

The problem is I don’t really see how the Bucs can keep selling Winston to the fans. We had a nice little winning streak and it certainly got a lot of attention from a lot of fans.
We put ouselfs in a position to really proove some worth against a top notch team and Winston just crapped all over himself. He didn’t look anything close to a QB ready to lead a team anywhere.
Keeping him is really going to suck all the energy from the fanbase at this point.
The worst part is the rest of the team around him is ready to take off. We need a leader on offense away from being a true contender. To make any case that Wiston is that leader is absolutely baseless. The only hope any fan can have with Winston is blind…..How in the world can they sell that?

BTW, I don’t think Tom wants anything to do with trading the Dolphins/Jets/Bills for Drew/Julio/Healthy Cam… but we can always dream of a QB who only needs a window of inches versus Mr Large Catch Radius Please. @DBS No those people have not been here. They all hide in waiting for Winston to have a bad game before they all come out with pitchforks. Winston is a lot better and far more entertaining to watch than any other QB in bucs history. Yeah he makes some head scratcher mistakes (not all his fault) and then can turn around and make some really fantastic plays that no other QB has ever been able to do. People like you want to go back to having a boring QB that never takes any risks and just throws checkdown passes to avoid interceptions.

I actually think the backs are fine – are they great no, but they would be totally productive with another team and some motivation.
Few players are performing at their peak for this team and THAT speaks to a losing culture perpetuated by owners who really don’t care about winning as much as making a buck.

TWO WORDS: Fullback!
This team is so allergic to running the ball it makes me sick. Why? Why after throwing 3 picks in 11 throws do the Bucs continue to chuck the ball?!
The run-game is nullified ineffective when we are in OBVIOUS run situations. Why? No fullback, for one, and no creativity for another. It would also help if our RBs had just a little vision.
People keep expecting Jameis to carry this team are delusional. What’d he throw? 45-50 passes?
The results will remain the same until this team figures out that throwing the ball 35+ times a game with Winston is NOT a recipe for success.

Winston needs to take most of the blame, as he is pulling the trigger. However, the first series is scripted….is the game plan that poor and predictable that the D knows what Bucs are going to run in 1st series??

Jameis played well enough to win that game. If Justin Watson hadn’t stumbled over his own feet, could be a different story today. If Cam Brate doesn’t drop that 4’th down pass, could be different story today. I’m not convinced every interception was his fault. Those receivers are backups and their routes may have been off a little. Jameis definitely needs to stop telegraphing his passes though.

JOE YOU ANGER ME SOMETIMES Rojo didn’t wait till the 15th game to break 1 long run off he’s had more than several called back because of penalties. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 that were called back cuz of a Dotson holding penalty. So he didn’t wait till the 15th game penalty’s aren’t Rojos fault unless he committed it but he hasn’t. Be a little more accurate

Joe actually strives to cite plays that actually count. Have the Bucs been flagged for holding every time he touches the ball??? Of course not.
And perhaps one or two or three of those runs may have been made as a result of a defender being held so he couldn’t make a play on Rojo? Just a thought.
