Shaq Barrett And History
January 13th, 2020Was it an accident or just dumb luck? Who knows, but the Bucs come out as winners (for a change).
Though this Tweet is dated, the point is still valid. Bucs outside linebacker Shaq Barrett made history this year. Yes, he became the NFL’s leading sacker with 19.5 sacks. He also set a Bucs franchise record for sacks in a season.
Big ups to Shaq! But you know what a bolt of lightning Shaq had in 2019? Anyone that claims they saw this coming is a downright liar. Why? Because what Shaq did this year has never been done before.
Check out the tweet from earlier in December from Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com.
Shaquil Barrett leads the NFL with 16.5 sacks, which is the most any undrafted player has had in a season since the sack became an official stat in 1982. Barrett is the first edge rusher to make the Pro Bowl for the Bucs since Simeon Rice in 2003.

So, accident, dumb luck, whatever. Joe’s just glad Shaq did this as a member of the Bucs.
Let’s cross our fingers the guy is wearing a Bucs practice jersey when underwear football begins this spring.

Love Shaq, but JPP and VV make the world go round. Keep the defense intact, and let’s see if our QB can limit the turnovers to say, 13-14, and we have a winner! Shame it won’t be with Fitz!

If Winston gets the kind of money is asking for, there won’t enough to pay other, better players, at their position. Winston needs to have a 1 year contract tied to production and turn overs (eliminating them). At this point, Winston if NOT worth the kind of money he is seeking. There may be other nuggets out there like (Ryan Tannehill – Jimmy Garapollo)) but when we are saddled with Winston and his 30/30 stats we won’t be able to afford to build an entire team. Winston needs to go!!!

Great Job Shaq! Agreed we need to keep this defense together as a priority.
Franchising Winston will force a legitimate backup on the roster. FA, high to mid level draft pick or both.
We can’t keep everybody without sacrifices. Cuts and restructuring are coming.
Fortunately, the personnel decisions are tied to a specific strategy laid out by BA and his Staff. .
In BA I Trust !

Joe is talking about VHGIII single-handedly losing the game for the Texans today! Usually we’re used to ex-Bucs winning superbowls but in this case it looks like Bucs were geniuses to get rid of Hargreaves.
VHG stepped up today and did all the right things to ensure the loss!

Shaq is Buc’s version of Vonn

another interesting fact about shaq:
he has like this super distinctive voice and some sort of accent that i can’t define…
so when you hear his voice you instantly know it’s him…
– distinctive voice
-distinctive accent (from where i have no idea)
so he has voice appeal of some sort…i really can’t define it, but he has that it factor or something with his sound………..sorta

Bucs have to re-sign Barrett, but not with the franchise tag … with a long-term contract. Spotrac has an elaborate formula for estimating Market Value, and they estimate Shaq’s Market Value to be 4 yrs, $63,090,716 with an Average Salary of $15,772,679.
Assuming that we keep the DLine in-tact, I would think that a 4-year contract for $64 mil ($16 mil per year with 2 years guaranteed) would be a appropriate for a 27-year-old OLB who got 19.5 sacks last year. Shaq performs well IN THIS DEFENSE, plus he seems to like being here. Pay the man … and bring back JPP, Suh & Nassib PLUS draft a DT/DE/OLB in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Round this year (BPA who fits).

Shaq seems to also be a very good person….family man…..good character….solid…..(now watch him go out and get in trouble)…..
I agree that Winston needs to accept a bit less to help us sign our other players.
Who is VH3?

“Undrafted” in 2014. Knew he was destined for glory if given the opportunity and signed with us for less money than what Denver was going to give him. Plus behind Vonn, he wouldnt get his chance to shine. Knew he could shine here and Licht knocked it out of the park with this FA signing.
Now we need to keep him long term. JPP and Suh too. David, Nassib, Gohlston, Big V, White….all of them have combined for the proper ingredients of a ferocious front seven. Keep it together Licht….even if it costs JW money.

Howard … Houston gave up 51 points yesterday. Even on his best (OK, worst) day, VHIII couldn’t have been responsible for ALL of those. That game was reminiscent of our game against the Giants. Texans got ahead 24-0 in the 2nd quarter then folded like a cheap suit. Sorta like us being ahead 28-10 at halftime in the Giants game then peeing it away?

whats impressive is his motor…….man.
Rice was greasy fast speed and $ when you needed him, this guy is all heart and motor all the time Props

It’s called space and opportunity. We provided the space and opportunity and he provided the explosiveness. He learned behind some great guys and kept himself sharp and physically ready and when he had his chance he blew up the spot. He is by far the most important signing of the off season. The last few games of the year showed we need to tweak the defense just a touch because it’s on the rise.

The other thing about Boom Shackalacka is he’s not a one trick pony. He plays the run well gets hands on passes and causes turnovers. Truly he’s there Warren Sapp of ends without the classlessness!

DEFENSE that’s a lot of money 1 great season. I’ve watch to many 1 (season) hit wonders come to the Bucs an then just make easy money an not produce. I know people are going to think I’m a Barret hater which I’m not. So happy he is here an really like the guy. But breaking the bank for just 1 great season in my opinion isn’t smart now if he goes out an gets close to 19 or beats that number next year I’m all for breaking the bank for him. Consistency I guess is what I’m getting at. It’s kinda like calling rookies a bust after just 1 season.

Do a bridge deal with Winston, like a 5 year deal but only 2 years are guaranteed money – then franchise Shaq. I like Shaq and he didn’t fluke into nearly 20 sacks, but if you pay him now, you’re paying him on production that he will almost certainly never replicate. Most likely Shaq is a 10-12 sack guy, which is really really good and something that shouldn’t be dismissed, but I can’t see him staying around 20. If he did it again next year – then sure, break open the bank since you’ll have to make him the highest paid defensive player ever. But I’m guessing he comes back down to earth and has a great season with like 11 sacks – and now you can work out a reasonable long term deal that doesn’t bankrupt the cap.

Pay the man.
He proved that he is THE MAN in our defensive system.
Jameis and his current status should not have any impact whatsoever on what the Bucs offer Shaq.
He should be our absolute number 1 priority.
19.5 sacks in his first season as a starter! IN OUR SYSTEM! ON OUR TEAM!
I hope they get a LOOOOONG term contract worked out.
