Bruce Arians calls out a looming “problem”
Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian looks at the Houston Texans defense (the Bucs’ opponent Saturday) and sees a unit you want to diffuse by playing up tempo offense.
A true Bucs insider says Tampa Bay probably won’t be able to do that.
Who is that insider? It’s Bucco Bruce Arians himself.
Polian asked Arians last night on SiriusXM NFL Radio if he thinks America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is up for playing hurry-up to limit the disguises in the Texans defense and to force them to show their hand quickly.
Arians replied that Jameis is tremendously improved and comfortable at fast play, as evidenced by his great success at the ends of halves this season. But Arians said his reserve/young receivers probably won’t be able to handle much hurry-up offense, and he said some of that was realized last Sunday even though the Bucs scored big.
“A little bit of a problem,” Arians called it, adding getting receivers fluent and mistake-free with “code words and routes” is the key issue.
Yes, the Bucs will be limited Sunday in what they can do. But they also will have the chance to get the tight ends more involved, as well as the running backs in the passing game.

they can still run it….. the tight ends can be the 1st read and the experienced running backs

2min drill could be a problem….
defense will need to step up and carry us to the W…..

Everyone keeps asking why we even bother trying to run the ball when our passing game has been explosive. Look no further then the playoff teams that are trying to get to the Big Dance. Virtually every one of them has a strong running game. That’s why we have to keep trying to pound the rock. I’d love to see ROJO have his true coming out party and the Texans are ripe for the festival.

We need a huge game from our Defense Saturday…….we need to run and utilize the screen effectively……we have to hold down penalties, turnovers & we can win.

TBBF … I agree that we need a ‘huge game from our Defense’ but what I’m mostly interested in from them is can they keep from giving up the big plays. That’s killed us all year long, and there’s no way we can be a TOP-10 defense if that continues. Teams have trouble ‘grinding it out’ against us IMO, but it’s those big plays that’ve killed us all season long. These guys have only 2 games left to show that they can shut that down.

This exactly why having TEs to split duty on the outside will help. Perriman and Watson should know the offense by heart. Schnell and Hyman MIGHT know it a little but I doubt it. That being said, Brate, Howard, and even Tanner Hudson should know all cide words and hot reads even from the WR position. Our 3 RBs may be able to do it as well. The thing is about hurry up, an offense doesn’t change personnel. What’s to stop the Bucs from lining up in a typical 2TE 2WR, 12 set and then without huddling up go straight into 4 wide using the same personnel?

Target VH3 all game and we can win. Their secondary is nothing to write home about either which is why he stepped in and started so quickly. He’s going to want to prove that we made a mistake letting him go and will definitely be susceptible to double moves if he decides to actually play close up on receivers

It’s weird to actually feel excited to watch our defense / the development of the secondary.
Saw a PFF video recently talking about Jameis, and the guy was saying how Dean/Davis/SMB are grading out really well the last month or so vs our secondary basically being the worst in the NFL the majority of Winston’s career.

texans secondary will be going up against 3rd and 4th string WRs….
they have the advantage in that department….
but we’ll see….

Texans have the 28th ranked secondary, should be a good game if we can reduce the penalties and turn overs.

yep, it was just a couple months ago that the bucs elite starters were helping create INTs by not being in sync with their QB and the various route options. It will be alot harder to trust Saturday’s WR group to make the right read or to get open on scrambles as effortlessly as godwin and evans often did. i still think the offense will put up points but the probability of an INT is as high as it’s been at any point this year. i see another LB picking off another pass, let’s just hope the team overcomes it like they often have of late

also: target vernon. i’d love to see one of his classic bucs stat lines….8 tackles (because of all the balls caught on him), zero passes defensed, and celebrating like a mad man on 2 winston overthrows where his man had 2 or 3 steps on him

If Evans and Godwin were still healthy, Jameis would have his 3rd straight 450+ yard game and the Bucs would likely win … with those guys and Scotty Miller replaced by dudes off the street, I’m expecting a 1 TD, 4 INT game from Jameis and a Texans blowout win. I’d expect the same if the QB was Stafford, Ryan, etc.
The Texans will win their division if they win this game and the Bucs have nothing to actually play for … I hope the Bucs win but I’ll say 38-16 Texans

I think you guys are over analyzing the back up receivers.
Perriman went off on Slay last week and Watson already runs solid routes.
Brady makes “Bad” receivers look good all the time.
Winston found OJs glove and he likes it.

Brandon- it is time to get creative- I agree 100%- have Hudson or Howard land Jameis and either block or slip out for a dump off, while Brate, Perriman and Watson run their route trees. You could even have Dare start as a side car to JW, then motion to flanker and have OJ motion to the sidecar. We still have crazy weapons- it is up to them to figure out how to use them.

*We have nothing to lose at this point- we are out of the playoffs and have been decimated in the last 2-3 weeks. Have fun with it and don’t be so predictable.

Man if Jameis has a good game against this team given his limited weapons I will start to have faith in him again. Quarterbacks worth keeping and paying bagillions of dollars to do more with less.
