Bruce Arians shares an odd tennis take
After the Bucs’ bludgeoning of the Lions yesterday, Bucco Bruce Arians joked about how Sean Murphy-Bunting got an interception because the Lions finally threw to a defensive back who can catch.
Today he took it a step further.
Yes, Arians is a little frustrated by the many drops by his defensive backs. It’s been going on all season.
Seasoned NFL men will tell you defensive backs play the position because they couldn’t make it as receivers, with stone hands the typical issue. Arians himself has said that in recent weeks.
But it’s been especially ugly for the Bucs this season. The good thing is that while it may not be correctable, it’s certainly something that can be improved with practice.
Arians is counting the lost opportunities and he shared his math at One Buc Palace today. “We dropped seven interceptions in the last two weeks. Jamel Dean, I’m going to get him a tennis racket or something.”
Yes, Dean and Carlton Davis don’t have good hands. Put Jordan Whitehead in that club, too.
Murphy-Bunting, however, has three interceptions and only nine NFL corners have more.
The rookie’s got a lot to clean up in his game, but he’s proven he can squeeze the football. And those plays routinely win games.

the problem has been coaching and lack of development……
under the previous regime, DBs were the same throughout the season…..this staff has developed all our DBs along with cappa and rojo(to a certain extent)….

daily jugs machine: every day all year catch 200 balls, some fast, some low, high and overhead and with somebody in your face practice makes perfect, simple as that!

Fire, totally agree! The DBs typically, and I say typically, have tougher catches to make than WRs. The balls aren’t usually thrown directly to them. Some high, some low, some deflected. If dropped balls that should have been interceptions are a recurring issue, which BA seems to think it is, practice is crucial. They’ve got plenty of time to hone their ball skills before next season. Get right guys!

If Bunting keeps improving, I may have to soften up on Licht a bit. He’s been so damaging to our roster that it’s hard to forgive, but I have to be fair.

Tampabaybucfan – Yeah, in order to drop the ball, at least the DB’s are around the ball.
With that said I don’t necessarily buy Arian’s dropped INT numbers. He comes away from each game saying like we dropped 5 INTs. I like the fact he is riding the guys hard, he’s trying to coach up the kids and seeing how they respond to being challenged, but just barely tipping a ball doesn’t mean it should have been intercepted.

Buczilla – You really can never judge a rookie based off their rookie year. I mean almost never. For example Ronde Barber, a 3rd rounder, doesn’t even barely play his rookie year – and when he did play I don’t think it was until game 14 or something. If that happened today everyone would be saying he’s a bust, he’s awful, etc etc etc.
Warren Sapp had a very mediocre 3 sacks his first year- the same number as Vita Vea. Again, rookie stats rarely mean much, in particular on the defensive line.
Corner used to be a position where you groomed someone – you didn’t just throw them on the field unless they were like a top 10 pick. The reason is obvious as we’ve seen.

One thing I notice about this team is that they don’t get too high on themselves when they win and not too low when they lose. In the past, the Bucs would get on a hot streak, “buy into the hype”, and then proceed to get blown out. A couple of years ago, after a big loss, Demar Dotson said this:
“We probably didn’t see it [poor practices in training camp because] we were probably buying into the hype. All the preseason hype on how good this football team was going to be.”
The coaches deserve credit for keeping an even keel throughout the season. No losing season! Finish strong!

But we’ve been closer to the ball. BA and Bowels won’t put up with that sh!t over time. Add Grant Delpit to the picture and this young group of DBs that Licht’s dumbass drafted early could be very, very good.

A tad unfair bucboi. The only two Secondary guys starting NOW who were also starters last year (as rookies) are Whitehead & Davis. Both are doing considerably better this year in terms of PDs, but that’s largely improved in the second half of this season. Notice that VHIII is gone, MJ Stewart is sitting, Ryan Smith has been playing sparingly, and oh ya, Brent Grimes is gone also. Although rookies, SMB, Dean & Edwards have matured fast and are getting the job done. IOW, the TALENT surrounding Davis & Whitehead is much better this year than it was last year, and thus the ENTIRE Secondary is performing better now.
I personally consider Todd Bowles to be a MUCH BETTER DC than Smitty or Duffner were AND his coaching staff is MUCH BETTER also. BUT … so is the TALENT. It’s not JUST improved coaching; you also have to have the horses.

These guys will get better with this first year under its belt …Dean can handle the big wide-outs while SMB wii cover and Shute down the smaller , quicker guys !! Keep bringing in talent, because that makes everyone better!!! KEEP Grinding..Keep this streak going!!
